Part Two

Remus's Wish
1972

"If you could have anything in the world,
what would it be?"

"A friend," I twirl the wildflowers between my fingers.
"They're hard to make. Harder to hold onto.
Especially when things get rough,
you realize who's just on tap for the good times.
I've lost a lot of friends.
Some to death. Some to circumstance.
Though I suppose death is a circumstance.
So I'd say more than anything, I want a friend.
But not just any friend, a friend who realizes I have as many
fears, shortcomings, and insecurities as they do, and who loves me
just the same. A friend I can watch falling stars with and they'll
know what I wish for without asking. A friend who realizes I'll
make mistakes, and who gives me the chance to correct them.
A friend who listens without judgement, and a friend who has
something to say. We have so many ways to communicate now,
but no one ever has anything real. It's all surface stuff.
A friend I can speak my heart to, so all these damn feelings
have a place to go they'll be heard. But most of all?"

"Yes?" His eyes search mine.

"A friend that stays."
