A/N: You may recognize a part of the story from Stephanie Meyer's version. I edited and condensed it a little bit but she still owns the idea, I own the rest of the scenario. Enjoy!
Chapter 21
Minor Complications
Since Jacob had 'claimed me' so they say, life wouldn't be that much different; key words: that much. I knew that I would be around the pack a lot more and hang around Emily. We were both in the kitchen a lot making food to feed the guys on Tuesday alone. They ate straight through the kitchen! I have no clue how she managed this by herself for a while. Charlie was only so thrilled that Jake and I became closer, but he came to terms that there was nothing he could do about it. Billy was ecstatic that Jake and I were together. He considered me a part of the family even more than before.
I only saw the Cullens at school when they were there still, and I didn't expect to see them much outside of school for a while, unfortunately. Luckily, Alice and Emmett were beyond understanding even if they weren't happy about it. Rosalie didn't say much but she wasn't happy, like always. It was clear that Jasper wasn't thrilled about it either but he didn't express his opinion one way or the other. I really appreciated that he still respected me and would talk to me as a friend even with our differing opinions. Edward was a different story altogether. I didn't know if they had some other super power that could tell when people lost their virginities, but he avoided me even more than before. He was in school for the first half of Lit History in the morning, then left halfway through and never came back. I asked Jasper if everything was okay on the way out of class. He just told me that Edward wasn't feeling well. Could vampires really get sick, or was he faking something just to get out school? So that left me in Bio 2 by myself on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, he was back. I saw him and his siblings getting out of their cars a row over from me in the parking lot. It was raining that morning and the roads were slick, as usual. As I was walking out from my truck and the car next to me, I didn't see it coming but Tyler's truck came sliding towards me. I couldn't even think about what I should do to get out of the way. Everything happened in slow motion from there on out. Tyler's truck kept sliding towards me and my feet seemed to be stuck where they were. Closer. I was going to die and get squished in between Tyler's truck and my own stationary vehicle. About 15 feet away. Next thing I knew I was being pushed out of the way but I had no clue how. I was now in between the middle of my truck and whoever's car was parked next to me. Tyler's truck was now right next to the back corner of my truck. I opened my eyes once I realized they were closed through the movement. Who else was sitting with his arm around me, blocking me from potential danger, was none other than Edward Cullen. How on Earth had he gotten over here so fast? It really took me a minute to think, 'Oh right, vampire.'
"Bella! Are you alright? I am so sorry!" I heard Tyler yelling from his truck. He could see us leaning against my truck but we were blocked from view from that side of the parking lot. I couldn't find it in me to answer yet. I was still a bit dazed from the whole ordeal.
"Bella, you're bleeding," Edward said calmly as he kept looking up at my head. I wish he didn't tell me that. Now I felt like I was ready to pass out. I didn't see any cuts on my body when I looked down. So if it was somewhere that I couldn't see…wait I was bleeding and he was still standing right next to me?!
"Edward go, if you can't be around blood. I'm fine," I said as I closed my eyes to try to get rid of the dizziness.
"Bella I haven't been breathing since you got the cut. I'll be okay, I just want to make sure you are too. Let's get you to the hospital, you'll need stitches," he said as he helped me up. That made the dizziness even worse. His arm was looped under mine. I heard him whisper, "Go ahead and lean on me Bella, I won't let you fall." I kept forgetting 'vampire'. Tyler was still in his truck. I didn't see any visible cuts on him but who knew what was below the window line. His door seemed a little dented in and the corner of my truck looked okay for the most part. I knew the tail light would have shattered but the frame seemed to be sturdy enough to deal with a whole other truck slamming into it. No big deal.
Edward walked me around the other side of my truck. We saw our principal and a few teachers all gathered around. They rushed over to us.
"Honey, we've already called the police and both your parents," Ms. Benson said referring to my dad and Tyler's parents. The only thing was, the police and my parent were the same thing. Hopefully that saved them a phone call.
"I've already talked to my siblings, Alice has already called our dad and he is expecting us at the hospital. I'll take her," Edward told the group of adults. How on Earth would he get away with this? All of the adults seemed distracted by something, but Edward just started directing me towards his siblings. I will admit, he was closer to dragging me since I was still pretty dizzy.
"Okay Bella, Edward and Emmett are going to take you to the hospital, Carlisle is already expecting you," Alice told me quietly as she helped strap me in the backseat where Edward sat next to me. I tried to mumble, 'thank you' but I didn't know if anything came out.
Emmett was driving as quickly and safely as he could. As he took the curves of the road faster than I ever had, I felt it in my stomach. I must have moaned and fallen over a bit because I felt my head leaning against something hard and cold even though I still felt like I was spinning.
"Hang in there Bella, we're almost there," Emmett said. He sounded concerned. Was I that bad? I knew I was dizzy but nothing else was wrong, was it?
"Relax Bella. Don't fall asleep, stay with me," Edward pleaded. I wanted to, I really did, but I just wanted to take a nap. Then I would feel much better.
"Okay we're here," Emmett announced. I had no clue how much time had passed but Edward was at my door unstrapping my seatbelt in a flash. He tried to get me to stand up but I started falling towards the ground so he must have picked me up. Last time I was carried like this, it was warm and comforting. This time it was cold. That actually felt good on my head, but it wasn't nearly as comforting as what I was used to leaning against; my wolf. Jacob! Oh my goodness he would be furious that the Cullens helped me to the hospital and Carlisle would be helping me. Edward had to have noticed my heart rate because he tried calming me down. I had heard him and Emmett calling for nurses to get a bed and to find their dad. Edward set me down on the bed. I didn't mind the bed, but I didn't want to lose the comfort of familiarity. The bed began moving and I got dizzy all over again. Carlisle was next to me and asking questions.
"Hello Bella, Do you remember me?" he asked.
"Of course, Carlisle," I answered, to give him his answer. I must have been starting to fall asleep again since he started saying medical things to nurses nearby and I didn't remember hearing all of it. Carlisle was telling me what they were doing to me as they put an IV in my arm, cleaned off my cut, and checked other vitals.
"Bella can you tell me what happened?" Carlisle asked calmly.
"I got to school, and Tyler's truck skid into mine, but Edward moved me out of the way. He was super fast," I told him. I realized I probably shouldn't have said that last part out loud, but at least people could blame it on me being half conscious.
"He was in the right place and the right time, thankfully," Carlisle corrected my error flawlessly. I'm sure they are used to this, covering for themselves if they use any vampire abilities.
"Is Tyler okay?" I asked. I was curious, I just didn't remember seeing much of him once Edward ushered me into the car.
"You arrived before him so I haven't heard anything yet, but I'll check for you later. We need to stitch up this cut on your forehead," he said calmly. I heard the word 'stitch' and must have started going crazy. Next thing I knew, I heard Carlisle telling me, "Calm down Bella, it will all be okay," and I was out.
Later when I woke up, I couldn't open my eyes yet but I heard voices talking around me. Jake and Charlie were sitting nearby and I heard beeping and other voices from around the hospital. Once I opened my eyes, Charlie and Jake noticed after a few seconds. They both leapt up and each ended up on one side of me, holding the hand they were closest to.
"Hey Bells, how are you feeling?" Charlie asked.
"You had me so scared," Jake whispered as he rested his head on the hand he was holding.
"I'm okay, just really thirsty," I said as I realized how parched I felt. Jake grabbed the cup of ice chips and the spoon next to it and started feeding them to me. After a few slurps I felt good enough to talk to them. Carlisle walked back in with Edward at that moment. Wait, Edward and Jake in the same room. This could not end well.
"Bella, how are you feeling?" Carlisle asked.
"Better. I have a headache but I can see straight and the world isn't spinning anymore," I answered. It was quite a relief, to be honest.
"Good. I'm just going to check a few more things and then you should be able to go home," Carlisle said as he walked out my room. The only problem I saw was that Edward didn't follow him.
"Bella, glad to see you're feeling better," Edward said looking at me and completely ignoring my wolf.
"Thanks Edward, and thank you for saving me. I really appreciate it," I told him.
"Of course, it was not a problem at all. I'm going to head home and report back to the others. They are all hoping for a quick recovery. We'll hopefully see you soon," he said as he waved and turned toward the door.
"Thanks for bringing her Edward, and for all of your help," Charlie said, standing up to shake his hand. I heard Jacob growl gently, too soft for Charlie to hear. I was accustomed enough to his body language to feel and know that's what he was doing. Edward and Charlie shook hands before he left. Edward made eye contact with me one more time, smiling, before glaring and Jake. Without a doubt, Jake glared right back, I just didn't see it.
"Jacob, get over the fact that he saved Bella and she could have been in a lot worse condition than this," Charlie told him strictly. Charlie was half chief, half dad in that moment. Jake didn't look very happy though at this admission. I knew my wolf wanted to be my main protector, 24/7, but that obviously couldn't and wouldn't happen if I had any say over it. He just had to get over the fact that I will live my own life with other people involved sometimes.
Charlie drove Jake and I home in the cruiser. Jake and I sat in the back, with his arm around me and his other hand around both of my smaller hands.
"Bells you will be staying home from school tomorrow, doctor's orders, alright?" Charlie told me, looking back at me in the rear view mirror.
"I know Dad, I wasn't planning on going," I told him. I knew he was just being protective but I had a feeling Jake would be skipping to stay with me tomorrow anyway.
"Good. I am trying to take off tomorrow but I don't think our case load will allow me to take the whole day, so I'll be home as soon as I can."
"That's fine Dad, do you what you have to do," I said as I smiled into Jake's shoulder. I knew he felt it or saw it since he rubbed his thumb on the back of my hand. Charlie pulled into the driveway quietly and turned off the cruiser. Jake got out the car and walked around to my side. He picked me up as gently as possible. This is what I had missed before. I appreciated Edward helping me more than anyone could ever imagine, but this was my home, where I belonged, in Jacob's arms.
"Bells, I love you, but you stink," Jake said seriously.
"Jerk, I've just been in the hospital for- wait how long was I out for?"
"Only a couple of hours, long enough for them to stitch you up and get the pain meds in you," Charlie replied.
"So people are still in school? Wow, it feels like it's been days," I said. I clearly had no sense of time whatsoever. As Jake carried me upstairs to my room and I knew Charlie was right behind us.
"Dad is Tyler okay?"
"Yeah, he'll be fine. His arm has a fracture, he has a couple of bruised ribs, and he had pretty bad whiplash. He'll definitely be a little more sore than you for a few days but he'll be fine," Charlie said grumpily. Dad loved Tyler since our parents had been friends for so long but of course was against anyone who did anything to me. Jake laid me down in my bed and covered me up.
"Jake can you bring me the mirror over there on my dresser?" I asked him. Of course, he obliged. "Thanks," I said as I looked into it. I saw a girl with hair all tangled and some still sticky from blood. Her face looked sunken in with dark circles under her eyes. I had even gotten enough sleep recently, so that was frustrating. There was a huge red and swollen gash on her forehead. It was only a few inches long, but the stitches made her look even more broken. On the inside I felt happy and loved. The exact opposite of broken. The only thing that was eating me inside was the feud between my friends. Well, let's be more specific, my friends and my family. I really hoped this would be sorted out. While I was staring at myself I heard the phone ring, and Charlie answered it.
"Jake I'm guessing you weren't going back to school anyway?" Charlie asked as he walked down the hallway.
"Nope, not at all," Jake responded, looking at Charlie completely seriously.
"Okay then. That was the station, I'm going to get some work done today so I can take off longer tomorrow. Call me if you need anything, alright?" We both nodded at him as he walked over to me and kissed my hair. "Love you kiddo, feel better," Charlie said as he walked out of my room and got ready to go back to work.
"Bye Dad, love you too," I said. It was going to be a long afternoon of discussing this morning with my amazing, but overprotective, boyfriend.
