Eren hit the ground hard, but held onto Greer and Evie securely. He gently released them and Greer sat up on his chest looking at him.
"Thank you, Eren," she whispered and smoke began to rise from his neck.
Eren pulled himself out and ran over to the two.
"Is she okay?" he asked concerned.
Greer shook her head.
"I don't know."
Later That Day…
Greer was with Evie in the hospital. The young girl still hadn't woken up, but the doctors had stabilized her. Greer had managed to convince Levi to go out with the scouts on a rumor that Kenny was still alive. A few scouts had returned to retrieve his body, but it was missing.
Levi found him by a tree, dying. He sent the other scout back, saying he would deal with Kenny himself. Kenny grinned weakly as Levi stared at him.
"The rest of your comrades were crushed in the cave-in at the chapel," Levi revealed and Kenny nodded.
"Figured," he rasped.
Silence.
"I don't know how you managed to get out of that cage…or move for that matter," Levi said staring at the man who taught him almost everything he knew.
Kenny smirked.
"We Ackerman are hard to kill. We're like cockroaches," he mused.
Silence.
"We?" Levi frowned slightly and Kenny nodded.
"You and me," he revealed and Levi kept his face composed.
"Jill, your mom, was my sister," he revealed further and Levi shook his head.
"Liar," he seethed, but Kenny just laughed, blood spilling from his mouth.
"I have no reason to lie about that. What purpose would it serve now?" he mused.
"She was the last decent Ackerman, I think. Didn't deserve to die the way she did," he continued and Levi felt rage enter his veins.
"And yet, you were nowhere to be found when she died," he said as calmly as he could.
Kenny nodded.
"No, I wasn't. That's why I came back; took you in for a while. Millie wasn't pleased. She and I never saw eye to eye when it came to—"
"—don't say her name," Levi said firmly and Kenny smirked.
"The mom you never had, huh?" he teased and Levi raised his gun, aiming at Kenny's head.
"Gonna shoot the only family you have left?" he asked and Levi froze.
Kenny chuckled.
"Before you do, can I give you some advice?" he said pulling out a small black case.
Silence.
"That girl…Reaper…you love her?" he asked and Levi tensed.
Kenny chuckled again, coughing up more blood.
"If you love her…leave her. Ackerman don't get happy endings," he wheezed.
Silence.
Kenny chuckled weakly.
"You're going to get her killed. It won't be your fault, but you'll be the reason she dies. It's our curse," he mumbled.
"And I kinda like her. Be a shame if she dies," he whispered.
Silence.
"Take this…you'll know when to use it," he said tapping the small black case.
"I have questions. Kenny, Greer told me about that day. Why—?" Levi asked and forced himself to look at his uncle.
His eyes widened.
Kenny was dead.
Into the Night…
Levi walked into the medical building and into Evie's room. Greer was curled up in a chair by her bed, holding her hand. Levi walked up to her and she sat up, wiping the exhaustion from her eyes.
"She's just resting. She woke up a few hours ago. They don't know what happened to her, but her vitals are back to normal. She was in good spirits…said she was probably just exhausted," she said relieved.
Levi nodded, also relieved, but didn't say anything. He just sat in the chair next to her and rested his head on her shoulder tiredly.
Two Months Later...
Historia had been crowned Queen two month ago and things were up and running. Hange had been conducting tests on Eren, learning from him as much as she could. Erwin and Levi had been preparing for the inevitable mission to Wall Maria; to the Shiganshina District where Eren lived. They were going to go before the Queen soon. The time was approaching and they wanted to act. Greer was going through the motions as if everything was okay.
But it wasn't.
After Evie had woken up she said she could no longer change into her titan. Hange ran some tests and they all came back normal, but when Evie attempted to change, nothing happened. She decided to still stay with the Survey Corps because she had improved as a fighter even without her titan power. Greer noticed Evie seemed happy she couldn't use it. She decided she would have a talk with her sister soon. But Greer had a lot on her mind besides Evie. She wanted to find Sully. She wanted to look for her dad. She knew he was alive. She felt it in her bones.
Was there really a village surrounded by titans or did I dream it?
But Wall Maria took central focus. It was where their heads needed to be. She stopped by Hange's lab and furrowed her eyebrows as an idea came to her. She walked in and smiled at Eren. Mikasa was currently tending to him, as he looked a little worse for wear.
"I push him too hard sometimes," Hange said apologetically.
Eren shook his head.
"I'm fine. I can take it," he said stubbornly.
"I don't know, Eren. You look a little tired," Mikasa said and he yelled at her, causing Greer to smile slightly.
"Hange, can I speak to you for a minute?" Greer asked and Hange nodded.
"Sure, what's up?" she asked walking over.
"I need you to take another sample of my blood," she got to the point and Hange nodded.
"Okay, but why?" she asked.
Hange would never say no to drawing blood.
"I want you to run more tests," she said and Hange frowned.
"Greer, we ran a bunch of blood tests when we got back here. They've all come back—"
"—then do a biopsy," she said and Hange's eyes widened.
"A bone marrow biopsy?" she asked and Greer nodded.
"If it's not in my blood then maybe it's in my bones," she said.
Silence.
Hange nodded that twinkle in her eyes again; the twinkle of a mad scientist.
"When?"
"Now."
"Let me send the kiddies on break," she mused and Greer waited.
Silence.
Hange came back and pulled on her gloves.
"Let's do this," she said and Greer nodded.
Into the Night...
Greer knocked on his door. She was upset. It had been a while and she barely saw him unless they were in meetings together. She had wanted to tell him about the biopsy. She wanted to discuss a few things with him actually. She was beginning to think he was avoiding her and that only upset her further. It was late and not a soul was outside as she made her way to his quarters. The door opened after a moment and Levi stood before her, an annoyed look on his face.
"What are you doing here?" he snapped and she glared at him.
She was about to snap back when she noticed his demeanor. Levi glared at her.
"Do you know what time it is?" he asked and she shook her head.
"I'm sorry," she said surprising him.
She backed up quickly realizing she was wrong for going there. There were probably dozens of other more important things on his mind right now. He was humanity's greatest soldier and captain of the Survey Corps first. She was being selfish. She hated that she probably woke him. The dark circles around his eyes were more prominent and she knew he didn't sleep much to begin with.
Silence.
"Are you alright?" he asked and she noticed his voice had become a little softer.
She nodded quickly.
"Yes, Erwin wanted me to deliver a message to you," she lied.
"It's 2am," he said and she only felt worse.
His voice was throaty, as if he was trying to wake up further and it bothered her even more that she woke him.
"He changed the meeting time for tomorrow. It's an hour later," she lied and Levi frowned slightly.
"When did he say that? I wasn't aware," he said and she cursed herself for her lie.
She nodded.
"I saw him a little while ago. He was having trouble sleeping and said he would push the meeting back. I told him I'd let you know," she lied further.
Levi stared at her and she could see he was trying to believe her. She knew he knew her lie didn't make sense, but he trusted her so much he was trying to find a way to make it so. She felt terrible.
"Well, at least you get an extra hour to sleep. Good night," she said turning to leave.
She wanted to fly out of there as soon as possible and let him return to his dreams. Levi reached out and grabbed her arm and she turned to him.
Silence.
"Greer—"
"—please get some sleep Levi," she said softly and left quickly.
She was halfway home when she looked up at the wall and saw someone standing on it. Her eyes widened and she ran to get her gear and flew up there. As she approached the figure cautiously she realized it was Erwin.
"Commander?" she whispered and felt a raindrop hit her shoulder.
He didn't turn to her, but continued to stare out into the distance.
Silence.
"Erwin?" she called and he turned to her as if just realizing she was there.
"Greer," he said and smiled softly.
Silence.
"What are you doing up here?" she asked as it began to rain lightly.
"I haven't been able to sleep much these days," he admitted and Greer stepped beside him.
"So you come up here?" she continued and he nodded.
"And wait for the sunrise," he said and she blinked.
"All night?"
"All night."
Silence.
"Do you want some company?" she asked after a beat and he looked at her.
"I would love some," he nodded and she smiled weakly.
They stood in silence as the rain got heavier.
But neither moved.
No words needed to be spoken. They each understood why the other was there.
"Why did you join the survey corps?" Greer asked suddenly and Erwin furrowed his eyebrows.
"You know why," he said and she turned to him.
"I want to hear you say it," she said firmly and his eyes widened.
"You think I've lost my way," he said and she stared at him.
"No, but I think you're at a cross road and you're about to take the wrong road," she admitted.
Silence.
"I haven't lost my way," he said softly.
"Then tell me to my face that you're still trying to save humanity and not obsessed with what's in Eren Yeager's basement," she said bluntly.
Erwin chuckled startling her.
"You sound like Levi," he mused and her eyes widened slightly.
Erwin nodded.
"He's doubted me lately. He says losing my arm did something to my head. He says I'm obsessed with Yeager's basement too," he admitted.
Silence.
"And maybe I am. But it's only because I truly believe whatever is in that basement is the key to saving humanity," he said firmly.
Silence.
"In truth, I think Levi's the one who has changed. Did you know two months ago I saw him smile? He was talking to the squad, right after Historia was crowned Queen, and I watched her hit him in the arm and dare him to do something about it. And do you know what he did? He smiled and thanked them all," he said in awe, as if reliving the moment again.
"Up until that moment I think you were the only one to ever see him smile," he said and Greer stared at her commander wide eyed.
Erwin smiled.
"It's a good change for him. I hope to see it more," he nodded.
Silence.
By now they were soaked to the bone and the rain didn't look like it was letting up. But still they didn't move.
"Are you going to be okay?" she asked suddenly and he smiled at her hidden concern.
"Is anyone really okay anymore?" he asked sadly.
Silence.
"You died. I never got to share my condolences," he mused suddenly and she laughed.
It was a real laugh and after a beat he joined her. She had a great laugh he realized and the thought made him sad. Surely he had seen her laugh before, right? He couldn't remember.
Silence.
The rain had lightened and was on the verge of stopping as the sun slowly began to show over the horizon. Greer was surprised so many hours had passed.
"Greer?" Erwin called to her, pulling her from her thoughts.
"Hm?" she asked, suddenly feeling the effects from being up the whole night.
"Will you dance with me?" he asked and her eyes widened and met his.
"Now?" she asked and he nodded.
"While the sun rises. I want a memory to hold onto moving forward. All my good ones are getting old. I think this would be perfect," he explained and Greer stared at him.
"Okay," she whispered and walked towards him.
He gently let his arm wrap around her waist and she carefully placed her hands on his shoulders.
"There's no music—" she stopped as he started humming lightly, his eyes closed.
She stared at him before a small smile fell on her face and she swayed back and forth with him. She became more comfortable, letting her head rest against his chest tiredly after a while.
"Greer, look," he said and she turned seeing the sun rising to its fullest.
They both stared at it, not one titan in sight over the wall and Greer felt emotions well up in her stomach.
It's beautiful.
Silence.
"Don't give up yet Erwin. I haven't, not yet," she said quietly and his eyes widened.
Silence.
Erwin's watch beeped and he glanced down at it.
"I'm late for my meeting," he realized.
"I pushed it back an hour for you," she said and he raised an eyebrow.
She shrugged.
"Well, technically, you pushed it back an hour. That's what I told Levi," she admitted.
Silence.
"Let's head to the meeting together," he suggested and she nodded.
They walked in still wet from the night rain and Hange and Levi were already there.
"What the hell happened to you two?" Hange raised an eyebrow seeing them soaked.
"We decided to have a water fight on the way here," Greer said sarcastically and Erwin chuckled.
"We got caught in the rain," he admitted and Levi stared at them.
"Why were you both out in the rain?" Hange asked and Erwin looked at Greer.
"We were on the wall waiting for the sunrise. It was worth every raindrop," he said softly and Greer hid her blush.
He makes it sound so damn intimate!
"Well, I was here for an hour waiting for you while you were watching the damn sun come up," Hange snapped annoyed and Greer figured she was caught as Levi furrowed his eyes slightly.
"What are you talking about? Erwin, pushed the meeting back an hour," he said and Hange frowned.
"I didn't know—"
"—that was my error. I asked Greer to tell Levi and completely forgot to tell you. I got caught up in my thoughts," Erwin covered for Greer and she stared at him wide eyed.
Silence.
Hange held up a vial of pinkish fluid.
"Well, I have news. I know we were all down in the dumps because our approval for the mission to Wall Maria was denied on account of Eren not being able to harden at will. But I believe I've found another way to get our approval," she said changing the subject and all eyes widened.
"How?" Erwin asked, hope rising in his voice.
Hange grinned.
"Greer's bone marrow," she said excitedly and Greer's eyes widened.
"What are you talking about?" Levi demanded.
"You wanted to know what that guy injected you with that brought you back and healed your wounds. Well, the tests came back and we found something," Hange said and Greer's breathing stopped.
"What tests?" Levi asked.
"We did a bone marrow biopsy yesterday. Greer figured if the change wasn't in her blood then maybe it was in her bones. And she was right. It's the same substance Annie and Reiner use to harden and protect their skin. It's modified, but it's a match," Hange explained.
"That was reckless, even for you," Levi said and Greer could tell he was pissed.
"Reckless, but it just gave us our approval for the mission to Wall Maria. If we can get Eren to ingest that and turn his skin into hardened armor at will, then we can block up that hole and finally get to his basement," Erwin said wide eyed.
Silence.
"There's something else," Hange said and everyone's attention fell on her.
"I'll need more," she said.
"How much more?" Greer asked and Hange thought about it.
"Judging by Eren's height and weight, I'll need at least four more vials. And that's being optimistic," she said showing her the vial.
"That could kill her," Levi spoke up quickly.
Hange nodded.
"It's good that she knows all the risks. It would certainly put you out of commission for a while and yes, it could kill you. Getting that fluid out of you was no walk in the park. It's tricky because it's modified. It wouldn't be like a normal bone marrow biopsy," Hange said honestly.
"Then find another way," Levi said firmly.
Erwin grabbed Greer's hand tightly startling her. She could feel the desperation in his grip.
"Greer, I am asking you, not as your Commander, but as a fellow human being, to please consent to this procedure for us," he said and her eyes widened.
"I can't have her out of commission for that long. She's one of my best scouts and she's the fastest with the gear," Levi said pushing off against the wall he was leaning on.
His attention was at its peak now.
"I can get another month for her to recover in time for the mission to Wall Maria," Erwin shot back never ripping his eyes away from Greer.
"And what if the procedure kills her? She can't recover if she's dead," Levi snapped.
Silence.
Silence.
Erwin stared at Greer and she couldn't look away from him. The intensity of his stare was one she hadn't seen in a long time.
"Then I am asking you, not as your Commander, but as a fellow human being, to please die for us," he said unwavering and all eyes widened.
Levi was before them in a second and knocked Erwin's hand away from hers.
"The Commander is obviously sleep deprived. Either that or he's lost his damn mind," he growled, his anger shining through for a moment.
"If it was anyone else you'd have strapped them down already without their consent!" Erwin shouted.
"I understand she's important to you, but we're talking about the survival of the goddamn human race here! I'm running out of options Levi!" he yelled upset.
Silence.
Silence.
"I need to speak with Erwin alone. Get out," Levi said sternly and Greer took one look at Erwin, turned on her heels and left.
I hope everyone enjoyed this chapter! Please let me know by reviewing! I love reviews!
