A/N: There are only three more chapters after this. Well, that's including an Epilogue. Sorry it's been so long between uploads, I got behind on all of my Uni work, and had to catch up, but hopefully, i'll be able to finish off this story before my best-friend and I head to America for two weeks in July. It's exciting, as we've never been out of Australia. I know, lame right? Anyway, we're going to hop on a kangaroo and bounce all the way to the USA. Of course, I'm kidding. We don't ride kangaroos... we'll take a plane... It's just humour people! ;) Enjoy. JusticeIsn'tEasy0083. D.
Chapter Twenty: It's Gonna Be Alright
Mercedes knew that Kurt would be the hardest person to tell. They have been best-friends for so long, and he promised that he would do anything he could, to make sure that she remained happy. But she and Sam couldn't keep living the lie they were living anymore. It was becoming too difficult for them to keep up the pretence, so when she got the chance, Mercedes invited Kurt and Brittany out for lunch, to take their minds off the case, and she took the designer's hands, trying to force the tears back. She looked him in the eyes, and told him that her and Sam had split up, that they felt it was the best thing to do, and that where they are at the moment, isn't a good place. Kurt didn't say anything. Brittany immediately hugged Mercedes, telling her that everything will be okay, that she and Sam will find happiness again, and Mercedes smiled. Kurt hadn't said a word, just looking at his phone, and not listening to whatever Mercedes was talking about. Blaine and Santana had taken Holly to Westerville to see Blaine's parents, which had been at Kurt's request. He didn't want Holly to be around when all this is happening, but he wishes Blaine were here with him at the moment. How is he meant to deal with one of his favourite couples splitting up? Sam and Mercedes are perfect together, and now all of a sudden, they're not. He knows that it's selfish to feel hurt by them, but he does. He didn't say goodbye to either of them, standing and making up some excuse about a meeting, before dashing out of the cafe, and over to his car, climbing in and driving off before Mercedes or Brittany could chase after him. It was only when he was almost home that he remembered that Brittany had gone with him, and would have to get Mercedes to drop her off...
Rachel and Puck walked through the mall, hand in hand, looking at baby things. They had saved most of the stuff from when Olivia was born, but given that they don't know the sex of the baby, having everything only in girly colours might not be the best idea, so they figured buying some different colour clothing would help to ease the tension they were feeling with telling their friends of the decision they had made a couple of weeks ago. Puck had been offered a job in New York, that was better paying than the job he had now, and Rachel wanted to head back to her roots, and back to Broadway, or at least to teaching in New York. She had many options, and some of her old contacts wanted to catch up with her. But the Puckerman's hadn't decided whether they wanted to move back to New York permanently. Kurt was still angry that everyone else seemed to know about Sam and Mercedes, and he was the last. Blaine was still in Westerville, and the court case had stalled, with one of Sebastian's witnesses being stuck in Rome, unable to get to the States. Rachel had a feeling that this person was made up, that he was paid to come in and say stuff, but Kurt confirmed that they knew and Italian exchange student when they were in college, Pierre De'Lonpre. Rachel was thinking to herself, and didn't even see Tina and Quinn walking towards them, until Puck had to knock her back into reality. Quinn asked if she was okay, she had been distant and quiet lately, but Rachel just smiled and nodded, the four of them heading to the food court for lunch. Before she sat down, Rachel sent a quick text to Blaine... he would be the one to be able to talk Kurt into understanding her.
To: Blaine Anderson
Listen; there is something I have to tell Kurt, but I need you here. He's been going through alot, and I know you both agreed that going to Westerville was the best idea, but he needs you. Please Blaine, you and Santana need to come back with Holly.
From: Rachel Puckerman
She pocketed her phone, and sat down, taking the bottle of water from Tina, and listening as Puck mock complained about the food companies charging them shitloads for little things that don't even fill you up. Quinn and Rachel rolled their eyes, but laughed along with whatever Puck and Tina had begun talking about. It was unusual, you never really saw Tina and Puck talk to one another, so it's nice to see that he's become so close to all of ND. Quinn was talking to him about his job, and whether or not he wanted night-shift at MerBerry, because they could use another person, and Puck jumped at the chance to take more work, up until they tell them they're moving to New York. Rachel cringed inside, and closed her eyes, not wanting to imagine the looks on their faces when they tell them they're leaving... when she tells Kurt that she's leaving... again... She was about to start eating when she got a text back from Santana.
To: Rachel Puckerman
You've freaked Blaine out so much that he's running around like a headless chook, packing the car. We'll be home in a few hours... seeing as Blaine is probably going to speed home now. I hope whatever you're doing; you fully understand the consequences...
From: Santana Lopez-Pierce
Kurt had taken a couple of weeks off work, and left Finn in charge of MerBerry. He has been helping people out, but things have gotten... a little weird. Even Quinn seems to agree that her husband has been... well doing things in a different way than either she or Kurt would. He's brought laughter back into the offices, which isn't good. Well it is, but not when they're meant to be preparing for a show, and for store expansions. Quinn is watching Finn, as he's talking with designers, and suggesting outrageously ugly combinations, as a joke, but she seems to be taking it seriously. Of course, he sees Quinn and immediately moves out of the way so she can begin damage control. He's just trying to put himself in his brother's shoes, but it doesn't seem to be working, because Kurt is unique, and no matter how hard he tries, no one will ever be able to do what his brother does so well. That's why he just watches as his wife cleans up the messes he's made, whilst he's been having fun, and takes the lead in one of the meetings, spending the whole hour talking about how much he respects and loves his brother, and all the work that he's done to make this company what it is. Quinn is laughing along at the end, as they spend most of the time telling jokes, not realising that Kurt had dropped by to pick up some folders he left behind. When he sees the office, he almost looks as though he's about to have a coronary, Quinn can tell from the look on his face that he's not happy. Finn stops laughing, and cringes when he hears Kurt's melodic voice asking what the hell is going on... he turns around slowly... doing that 'I'm-innocent' smile that he uses when he knows he's done something wrong, but won't admit it.
After an explanation from Finn, and a promise that he would clean it up, and that nothing was ruined, Kurt smiled, hugging them both, before leaving with the file he'd come to get. Finn looks at his wife, asking silently what is going on with his brother, but Quinn doesn't say anything, just handing him the lunch she'd made for them that morning, and following him into the tea room, where they sit down, opposite one another, and talk about everything. They've had this line of communication open forever, and it's working well, helping them to sort our problems, and plan for the future. Right now, they're talking about having more children, and if they can handle that. Finn knows that he wants another baby, and after the whole "Mercedes/Sam" thing, he wants to have something to talk about, that isn't depressing and sad. It's disappointing, because he thought if it would have been anyone that would have split up out of their group, it would have been Rachel and Puckerman... only because they've had problems, and especially two years ago when Puck was injured and Rachel was wrapped up in her fame that she made some bad choices... but they managed to get through it stronger than ever. But he never thought it would be Mercedes and Sam. Besides Kurt and Blaine, and him and Quinn, he's never know another couple strong enough to withstand everything thrown their way. Obviously, he was wrong.
'I know it's selfish to say, but I'm angry and Sam and Mercedes. I think Kurt looked up to both of them and their relationship,' Finn said,
'He's angry that he was the last to know. He's angry that Sebastian is still fucking with us, and he's angry that everything is changing. I can only imagine how he's going to feel when Rachel and Puck tell him they're moving back to New York permanently,' Quinn said, quickly covering her mouth when she remembered that Finn didn't know
'Of course they are. Puck got offered some big job. If we have another baby, and even if we don't have another baby, we're staying here in Philly. I want to be close to Kurt and Holly... and Blaine's not that bad,' Finn said, kissing his wife's forehead, before leaving the room to go back to work
'This isn't going to end well for any of us,' Quinn said out loud to the empty room
Santana had never seen Blaine's childhood house, and was amazed by the sheer size of it. Holly ran to hug Blaine's aunt, telling her all about her new dress, and Santana just watched, amazed that her little niece was so comfortable around people she barely knew. Blaine had been talking to her about something, and they had agreed that they would only be here for a week; he wanted to get back to Kurt as soon as possible. To be honest, Santana doesn't know why he left in the first place, Kurt had been fine with it of course, but Blaine figured that taking Holly away, would allow them to be able to get some things done, and he could spend some time with his daughter, and Kurt's best-friend. Elisha and James hugged Santana and Blaine watched as the two women walked off together, talking about anything and everything. James was talking to Holly, and he looked amused and bewildered all at the same time. It had been a while since Blaine was really able to just sit and relax; not having to think about Sebastian breaking into their lives would do him some good. Holly was telling his uncle about her new dolls that Blaine had brought with them, so she would be occupied, and wouldn't be constantly asking for him to buy her things. Kurt does that, he's the nice parent. Blaine has to play bad cop sometimes, especially when Santana is around and buying things for her niece. She's got too much stuff... they need to put the kibosh on it. It's almost six, when Santana finds him, sitting on the back porch, watching the sun set, and the steaks of light reflecting off of the pool. She sits down beside him, and smiles, taking the drink from his hand, and thanking him for bringing her here.
They sit in silence. Not awkward silence, but silence nonetheless. He's thinking about Kurt and Holly and their lives together, and Santana is thinking about everything. Brittany had text her, and told her that Mercedes had finally told Kurt about her and Sam, and that he was pissed... she sighed to herself, not wanting Blaine to feel obligated to rush back right now. He deserves to have some time with just him and Holly, and away from Sebastian. Hell, she deserves that too. Don't get her wrong, she loves Kurt, they all do, but there is only so much one person can take of Sebastian Smythe, before things begin driving you insane. Santana had learned from Elisha about why Blaine had lived here for his teenage years. He had boarded at Dalton, but when he came home, it was here, and he always referred to them as his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson weren't very nice to their youngest son, after he came out to them when he was fifteen. The only thing they did was pay for his entire education, but when he graduated and moved to Philadelphia, they had cut him off, which was fine, because James was a lawyer and managed to get them to sign over the rights to his trust fund, which he got when he was twenty-five. Blaine just listened to the woman tell him his history, kind of annoyed that his aunt had taken it upon herself to tell Santana everything.
'When I was fifteen, I was messed up. Wes and David had been distant, no one was treating me the same after I came out. When I moved to Dalton, everything changed. I told my parents I wanted to live here and I went to school where I was safe. I don't have anything to do with them, and they don't have anything to do with me. I like it that way,' Blaine said, standing, only to be stopped by Santana grabbing his arm
'Blaine, no one had an easy childhood. Kurt didn't, I didn't... people that have easy childhoods, they don't know what the real world is like... they don't know what different is, because they've never had to experience that. We are living examples, of how, even though we had shit lives, we have better lives now, than most of those other people,' Santana said
'Your logic on some things flaws me Santana. Now I know why you and Kurt are best-friends,' he replied, smiling
'I have room in my heart for two best-friends... but if you break him... I'll break you. Like I said, we've all had hard lives,' Santana replied, hugging him, before heading inside.
Left, right and center, everything he knows is changing. Mercedes and Sam are separated, Blaine, Santana and Holly took off to Westerville, Rachel and Puck are moving to New York after their second baby is born, and Quinn and Finn are making plans for the future, that involves staying here in Philly and having a bigger family. Sebastian wants to sue him for all he's worth, and the thing that pisses him off the most, is that he doesn't seem to care about anything anymore. He just wants this all to be over, Blaine to be here, and everything to just stop. He wants to go back to when they were all together, no one was making plans for the future, and they can just freeze themselves in a puddle of denial, and pretend, just for a moment, that they're back on the stage at nationals, finally proving to Mr. Schue that they are the team he's worked so hard to get to where they are. If he could make time stop, he would appreciate that trick. Brittany is talking with the lawyers about the case tomorrow, but he's not paying attention. He's thinking about Mercedes and Sam, and Blaine and Holly, and Santana... and Rachel and Puck. Something in the back of his mind tells him that he should be listening to what Paul is saying, that it could be important, but he doesn't, because he knows that Sebastian isn't going to win, he doesn't have a case, he's stalling to get his sentence reduced, and he knows that Kurt will play into his game. He'll do it, because he wants to see the look on that barstards face, when they, yet again, walk away with the win. But when he's alone in the house, with no one else to talk to, he sits in the study, reading, or drawing. He doesn't sleep... that's for people who actually care what happens tomorrow...
When he leaves the room at six the next morning, he's surprised to see that Blaine, Santana and Holly are in the kitchen, cooking breakfast. Blaine hugs him tightly when he walks into the room, thinking that he had done something stupid, or that he'd been staying somewhere else. Kurt doesn't let go, he holds onto Blaine, and when the other man tries to pull back, he grips tighter, so tight that in the end, he loosens his grip and lets Blaine lead him into the lounge, where Kurt curls up to him, and buries his head into Blaine's shoulder, letting the tears fall. He doesn't know how long he cries for, but Blaine looks up to see the pain in Santana's eyes, and wonders if this is something they should be worried about. No one says anything, and when it sounds like Kurt has finally stopped crying, Blaine presses a soft kiss to his forehead, and whispers that they have to go get ready. Kurt hugs Santana and Holly tightly, and takes Blaine's hand, as they walk upstairs together. The court house is buzzing with people. Kurt ignores the photographers, dodges questions, never letting go of Blaine's hand, as they are led into the chambers where Sebastian and his lawyers are sitting, whispering to each other. Kurt hands a folder to Paul, and Blaine cocks an eyebrow at him, silently asking him what he has planned, but the designer just smiles and moves to the front to take his seat beside Paul, who tries, and fails, to hide his grin when he opens the file that Kurt handed him. Out of the corner of his eye, Blaine sees Santana wink at Kurt, and wonders what was in that file that has them all so happy.
Blaine was outside with Holly when he saw his mother and father get out of their car and head towards the house. Elisha had married his father's brother when Blaine was fifteen. They had the best marriage any Anderson family member has ever had, and James is so much different than Col. Richard Anderson and his wife Sandra Anderson. She married Richard for the money; Blaine knows this, because his brother overheard her talking to someone on the phone when he was little. He didn't know what that meant at the time, but Blaine always knew that his mother wasn't a particularly nice person. She did have alot of gay friends though, so when Blaine came out, she thought it would be fine, that she would love him just the same... but she was worse than his father. At least his father still spoke at him. His mother shut him out all together, pretended he didn't exist until he went off to college, and she didn't have to pretend anymore. He hears James and Elisha before he sees them, and Holly runs back to him immediately, hiding behind him. He bends to pick her up, and is about to take her inside to Santana, when his mother stops him. Reluctantly, he turns to face the woman who gave birth to him, almost falling over when his mother latched onto him, hugging both him and Holly, who was squirming, which meant that she didn't like what was happening. Blaine pulled back, placing Holly down on the ground, telling her to go inside and find Aunt Santana. She kissed her papa's cheek, and ran off inside, leaving Blaine, Elisha and James standing on the patio, watching the other two Anderson's curiously. His mother had never before shown him anything other than spite and contempt, so to hug him after all these years... he's a little curious as to what's happening.
'That was odd. You never hugged your son before now,' Elisha said, ignoring the look from James
'I've made a lot of mistakes, I'm trying to make up for it now,' Sandra said
'Was that your daughter Blaine?' his father asked, smiling
'Yes, my partner Kurt and I live together in Philadelphia and raise her. She's six,' Blaine replied, turning to walk back inside, if only to prevent Santana coming out and seeing this sight... she'd have a fit, and then he'd be forced to call Kurt.
They heard the testimony of seven different people from many different times in Sebastian's life. His mother, his friends from Dalton and his friends from college, all of whom paint Kurt in the worst light possible. Yet, his fiancée doesn't flinch, or blink an eyelid, or even make eye contact with the man. He was a wreck this morning, and now he's sitting there, letting all of these words bounce off of him, like he's immune to whatever it is they have to say. Blaine really wants to know what's in that file that Kurt gave to Paul. He wants to know why all of a sudden, they're walking around, smiling and almost laughing with satisfaction. When the defence calls Kurt to the stand, he walks over, sits down, recites the oath, and smirks a little as Sebastian's lawyer stands and walks over to him. he answers each question short and astute, with no emotion, but when they accuse Blaine of something, Kurt gets defensive, and makes remarks that he never thought he'd ever hear Kurt say... it's sexy when he defends him though. Sebastian's lawyer eventually gives up her quest to get any Goss, and relinquishes the stand for Paul to cross-examine Kurt. He starts with the easiest question... is Santana the biological mother of Holly? Kurt replies with the truth: biologically yes, the embryo was hers, legally, no. That's the truth. Kurt says it in such a way that it makes Sebastian cringe a little and Blaine understands now what the file was. it was the ammunition that Kurt had been building up on Sebastian over the last few months. Fraudulent accounts, visits to a psychiatrist for mental problems sustained due to constant bouts of paranoia. When Sebastian takes the stand, and Paul starts asking question, Blaine knows they've got him right where they want him. Kurt turns, winks at him, and smiles when he catches Santana's eye, before sitting back on the chair and watching the scene unfold.
He'd never had a chance in hell of getting his sentence reduced; even Sebastian's smart arse lawyer knew that. she was just appeasing him, helping him to get his sentence reduced, even though this would probably a lot him more time, for wasting resources and time. also, laying allegations that are completely false against someone can be grounds for legal action, not that Kurt is going to do anything, because after this, he plans to take Blaine and Holly, and go on a nice long holiday, maybe a trip around America, or even to stay with his parents in Lima for a while. They decided to go to Maine's for dinner that night. Mercedes, Sam, Rachel, Puckerman, Finn, Quinn, Santana, Brittany, Holly, Tina, Mike, Artie and Lauren... Wes, David, Nick and Jeff... everyone sat around the large table that had been set up for them, and talked and laughed and drank. Holly was telling Wes and David stories about her grandpa, and their adventures in Lima. Kurt and Nick were planning some kind of party to celebrate ten years of something or other... Blaine couldn't really hear over the noise, but he could see the smile on Kurt's face. He knew that Finn could see it too, because he was smiling as well, and he usually only does that when he knows that Kurt, or Quinn, are happy. He likes to see his brother happy, and that radiates through the group. There's a moment of silence, and then Mercedes stands and raises her glass. Everyone stops to look at her.
'I just want to say, that even though Sam and I have mutually decided to split, does not mean that we're not still going to be friends, and hang out. We will be able to. Kurt, congratulations, we're finally rid of Sebastian for good, and I know that there have been alot of changes, but I guarantee you, they're for the best. Cheers,' Mercedes said, and Kurt smiled, standing himself
'Thank you Cedes and I do hope that you and Samuel will remain friends. Now, I have something to tell all of you. Blaine and I have been talking, and we've decided that we want to take some time off from work, and travel the world with Holly. We don't know where we're going yet, but that's half the fun. I just wanted you all to know, because we want to get married before we go... so we've set the date... Blaine and I want to get married on June twelfth, our seven month anniversary,' he said, and Rachel's eyes went wide
'Kurt, that's in two weeks. How are Quinn, Mercedes and I meant to plan your wedding in two weeks?' Rachel asked, looking at the designer and the teacher who just shrugged
'You're Rachel Puckerman, you can do anything you set your mind to...' Kurt replied, winking at her, before turning to tell Nick about their idea for an around the world trip
That night, as they lay in bed, talking about where they wanted to travel to, Blaine kissed Kurt mid sentence. It had been a long few months. They wanted to get married on June twelfth because it was, to them, a special day. It was the day they would have met, had Kurt gone to Dalton in highschool, and it would've been the first time they ever held hands on the long winding staircase, and it's the day they got together in November last year. It's their seven month anniversary... Kurt's favourite number is seven. He's full of it, but Kurt would never tell him that, he just chuckles and agrees. Blaine knows that he's only appeasing him, but plays along anyway; he likes to think he has a wonderful imagination. He should have one, he's a teacher. The designer smiled, and asked what he had done that for. Blaine just kissed him in response, not letting Kurt say another word, which was fine with him, because he had nothing else to say... really he didn't. He just wanted Blaine... and Holly. That's all he needs. But right now... he just needs Blaine... When you have unconditional happiness in your life, you don't need anything else... except maybe oxygen and food... and sleep. They really should be sleeping... but they have plenty of time for that.
A/N: Next Chapter: Kurt and Blaine finally get married. Rachel, Quinn and Mercedes must come together with Santana, to help plan the most perfect wedding in the history of weddings. Brittany gets a call from a company that wants to make her their head dance teacher, and have her own studio that she runs. Santana and Brittany discuss the possibility of having a baby, and Mercedes and Sam spend time together, as friends. Holly is excited to be traveling the world with her father's, and Rachel promises Kurt that when they get back, they'll be here. All of them. Stay tuned. JusticeIsn'tEasy0083. D.
