Previously:

A deathly silence filled the room as everyone stared at the spot where Emerson and Armand had suddenly disapperated.

"What the bloody hell was that all about?" Ron was the first to speak up, looking completely baffled.

"We still have time before the exams-" Hermione shot him a doubtful look. "-we'll just keep going till we figure it out."

Ron rolled his eyes as he swung an arm around Hermione's stiff shoulders and another arm around Harry's. "Yeah Hermione, we always figure it out in the end."

"Me? No, not at all. I was just quite shocked, that's all, it's not every day you see immortals you know?"

"Immortals?" Hermione frowned.

A NEW MINISTER ON THE HORIZON? A THREAT TO MINISTER FUDGE'S POSITION?

Harry's gaze wandered to the photo below the caption.

The photo below the caption showed a blonde haired man in his thirties, posture powerful as he exited on of the rooms inside the Ministry, wearing formal robes and a cloak. At his right shoulder, barely a step behind him, was a dark haired man of about the same age sporting similar robes. They moved in sync as cameras flashed all around them.

"Merlin…" Ron suddenly breathed, sounding shocked. Hermione and Harry shot Ron a questioning look. "Emrys was the druids' name for Merlin, I remember now."

"Wait- are you implying that Emerson is somehow the great wizard Merlin in disguise?" Harry could see the looks of warring amusement and sheer disbelief on Hermione's face before he looked back at Ron as the dots finally started connecting.

"Not just that but if Morgan Emrys is actually Merlin Emrys, anyone want to hazard a guess who Aaron Pendragon actually is?"

"Are you really implying that we have the King Arthur and Merlin running for Minister of Magic." Even as he said it, Harry knew it to be true.

Harry glanced between Hermione and Ron only to find his own shock mirrored on their faces in the form of shocked smiles before Ron's smile turned slightly ridiculous.

"Merlin's pants," he snorted and with that, the three of them fell into a fit of slightly hysterical laughter.

Chapter Twenty-One: Arthur

Arthur grimaced as he gaze flitted over a stack of newspapers piled on the cobblestone of Diagon Alley.

"Possible New Minister of Magic! Read all about!" The paperboy cried out as he brandished one of the newspapers above his head while looking unnecessarily enthused.

Arthur hurried his step, fearing he might be recognised for the first time in over a thousand years. Still feeling self-conscious, he tugged at the hood of his red cloak that was currently attempting to obscure his figure.

Being in the spotlight, being known, was something he would have to get used to once again.

"Tell me again why this was a good idea?" Arthur muttered as his gaze drifted over to Merlin who was staying close to his side, his features also hidden by a dark blue cloak that hung loosely around his more slight frame.

"Because, if the prophecies are to be believed, our destinies still aren't fulfilled, which means we need to step into the open at some point. There's no point in trying to change the wizarding world from the shadows. I tried in Camelot and look how well that lasted." Merlin grimaced as he gazed around at the surrounding shops and alleyways.

Arthur reached out and briefly gripped Merlin's arm, trying to pull Merlin away from the guilt that was already threatening to take over his expression.

Arthur grimaced.

"Fine, but if there's a fuss at the bank, I'm blaming you," Arthur shot back grimly in an attempt to lighten the mood.

Merlin snorted.

"You know as well as I do that the goblins don't care for wizarding politics."

Arthur opened his mouth to object, only to realise that Merlin might have a point.

Merlin smirked back at him when he noticed Arthur pause, causing Arthur to glare back at him half-heartedly.

"Oh shut up, Merlin," Arthur hissed back.

Merlin snorted a laugh, which turned into a sound of surprised when Arthur shoved at him playfully.

"Oi! Careful!" Merlin exclaimed as Arthur's shove caused the hood of Merlin's cloak to fall off.

Merlin glared at Arthur accusingly.

"Emerson?!" Merlin's hand froze where it had been poised to pull his hood back over his head, eyes widening in fear.

Arthur gaze snapped to where the surprised exclamation had come from.

Arthur blood ran cold as his eyes landed on Harry, Ron and Hermione who'd also frozen where the stood in the road, staring straight at Arthur and Merlin in both disbelief and amazement.

Harry was the first to recover, hurrying towards them with Ron and Hermione following close behind.

Merlin quickly pulled his hood back over his head.
"How the hell did they figure out it's us," Arthur hissed as they ducked into a side alley.

"It probably wasn't that hard, what with the newspaper articles and everything that was going on in Dumbledore's office, they had reason to be suspicious." Merlin hissed as they picked up their pace towards the apparition point.

"Where are we going," Arthur added, feeling frustrated.

"We need to get to the apparition point," Merlin shot back, heightening Arthur's frustration.

"Don't be ridiculous, let's just go now!"

"Arthur, we can't, people might notice! We can't go stirring up trouble right after coming out of hiding," Merlin insisted, the worry clear in his voice.

"Fine, just, run," Arthur pulled Merlin into a sprint, rushing towards the apparition point.

"Hermione, hurry up," Arthur heard Ron call from to close behind them.

"Emerson, we know who you are," `Hermione cried out in between pants, causing Merlin to stumble in shock and for Arthur to go barrelling straight into him.

Arthur and Merlin collapsed into a heap, just managing to make it cross the line to the apparition point.

"Go! Now," Arthur shouted only to feel the pull at his navel at the exact time that three bodies came crashing down on them, sweeping all of them away at the same time.

There was a collective groan as they landed on the living room floor of Arthur and Merlin's apartment, followed by a wriggling of limbs as everyone tried to detangle themselves from each other.

"Me-"

A hand shot out to clamp over Arthur's mouth at the same time that Harry, Ron and Hermione suddenly froze on top of them.

Arthur blinked before craning his neck past all the frozen limbs to study them before his gaze found Merlin's burning golden eyes.

"Well aren't you quick," Arthur remarked as he tried to squirm out from under Harry.

Merlin's brows furrowed, looking troubled as he stared at the golden trio still lying on top of them.

"Merlin? A little help here?" Merlin's focus remained on the trio, not even seeming to register what Arthur was saying. "Fine, suppose I'll just have to levitate them with my own unreachable wand," Arthur finally snarked, still watching Merlin carefully for a response.

That finally got a response as Arthur suddenly felt the weight from the trio lifting off of him and he quickly moved out of the way before giving Merlin a hand up as well.

"Thanks."

Arthur quickly retrieved his wand from its holster.

"Arthur wait." Before Arthur could even raise his wand, Merlin had grabbed hold of his wrist.

Arthur studied Merlin, confused.

"What's wrong?"

"I-," Merlin wavered. "- I don't think we should Obliviate them.

"What!" Arthur stared at Merlin, shocked, but Merlin looked back steadily. "You can't be serious? They just told us they know that we're Emerson and Armand and you want to just leave them be?" Arthur gaped.

"If we avoid it now, it'll only cause more trouble in the long run," Merlin stubbornly insisted.

"Even more reason why we should Obliviate them right now," Arthur said, exasperated.

"And what if they end up figuring out that they were Obliviated, we'd just end up looking even more suspicious then if we just explain it away."

Arthur grimaced as he considered Merlin's words before looking back at the trio still lying on the ground.

Finally, he sighed. "Alright, we handle it, but if something goes wrong-"

Merlin rolled his eyes in exasperation and the next second they'd returned to their normal blue colour as Harry, Ron and Hermione unfroze.

Arthur sent Merlin a berating glare for good measure.

Ron suddenly stopped moving as he looked up at Arthur and Merlin in confused wonder.

"How did you-?"

Harry and Hermione also blinked up at them before the three quickly scrambled to their feet.

"You-you did that with Umbridge and the Slytherins last time as well…didn't you," Hermione ventured, giving Merlin an unsure look.

Merlin shifted, looking uncomfortable.

Harry's eyes had also gone to Merlin and he was studying him with critical contemplation.

"Why didn't you just Obliviate us, you had the opportunity?" Harry finally asked. Arthur gritted his teeth, feeling his dread growing.

Merlin remained silent and as Arthur watched him, he could see the regret building in Merlin's gaze.

Arthur glared at Harry.

"Harry," Hermione muttered, face turning red with embarrassment.

"I suppose that's one way of thanking us, maybe we should've just Obliviated you instead," Arthur hissed.

"No." Hermione's eyes widened with fear. "He didn't mean it like that-"

"We're just confused," Ron chipped in by way of an explanation.

"No we're not." Harry insisted stubbornly and Arthur felt slightly amused at the look of frustration that overtook both Hermione and Ron's faces at Harry admission. "Why are you doing this? Why come to Hogwarts disguised as students in the first place. Why not just become Minister of Magic and take Voldemort down that way?" Harry ploughed on without hesitation.

Merlin paused. Arthur sighed.

"Simple, if we were out in the open, we would've become a known threat. But doing things the way we did, he didn't even know to look out for us until it was already too late," Arthur declared, not seeing a reason to beat around the bush. If Merlin didn't want to Obliviate them, then Arthur would at least help Merlin explain away the situation to the best of his abilities.

Harry, Ron and Hermione's expressions remained intense even once Arthur had finished his short explanation and Arthur frowned at the calculating look that was entering Harry's eyes.

Suddenly, Hermione gasped.

"So that's why you've been hiding who you are as well, because it's easier to move through the world if people don't know your real identities," Hermione exclaimed as if everything was suddenly making sense to her.

Arthur frowned, giving Merlin a confused look. Hadn't that been what they'd just said?

Ron snorted shaking his head in denial.

"No way, why wouldn't they want people to know they're the legendary Merlin and Arthur?"

Arthur felt his heart stop and his skin prickling in fear.

"Wha-what did you just say," Merlin managed to stutter, voice sounding suddenly hoarse.

The trio's eyes widened in shock as they studied Merlin and Arthur's horrified expressions.

"No way," Ron breathed, sounding both amazed and baffled at the same time.

"H-how did you kn—" Merlin started to ask before Arthur managed to clamp one hand over his husband's mouth, while the other hand came up to point his wand at the trio.

"Mind tell me what the hell you're doing," Arthur hissed, feeling his stress spike even further.

Arthur blinked as Merlin reached up and gently grasped Arthur's wrist, the hand covering Merlin's mouth falling away automatically as he regarded Merlin.

And Arthur saw it, the longing Merlin felt to have someone know them, know their secret. It was the first time in over a thousand years that someone or indeed several people, had gotten this close to the truth. It was clear that the opportunity for someone to know them, and for them to step outside the safety bubble that they had crafted for themselves, was too much for Merlin to pass up.

Merlin seemed to take a deep breath before a small smile spread across his lips.

"It's okay, I trust them," Merlin murmured, gaze boring into Arthur's own.

Arthur couldn't help frowning as he dragged his gaze away from Merlin to carefully observe the trio who seemed to be waiting with baited breath.

"S-so it's true, you really are them?" Hermione finally ventured, sounding slightly breathless.

Looking closely, Arthur could see a slight tremor in Merlin's hand before said hand clenched into a tight grip on his cloak.

Finally Merlin nodded.

"Woah," Ron breathed, looking awestruck. "I mean, we kind off guessed it, obviously, but still, to think we actually went to school with thee Merlin and Arthur," Ron chattered, letting out a disbelieving laugh at the end.

"But how's that even possible? How could you possible still be alive?" Harry spoke up for the first time since the revelation.

Arthur glanced over at Merlin who, despite looking determined, also looked extremely unsure.

"It's simple really, Merlin over here is what one would describe as the embodiment of the old religion which means that as long as magic exists, he'll continue to exist," Arthur stated plainly, the words feeling almost alien on his tongue.

The entire situation felt like a dream that he could wake up from at any moment and he couldn't help feeling overly aware of the fact that he'd just said Merlin's real name in front of people… people who knew their secret.

Arthur grimaced, this was going to take some getting used to.

Interest sparked in Hermione's eyes as she looked at Merlin.

"That doesn't explain how you're still alive," Ron interrupted Hermione who had looked ready to start firing off questions. He gave Arthur a pointed look. "Ow!"

"Don't be rude, Ronald," Hermione chastised as she jabbed at his side with an elbow.

"It's a fair question, Hermione," Harry pointed out, still looking unconvinced as he regarded Arthur and Merlin.

Arthur glared back. "We weren't lying back in Dumbledore's office, Merlin and I share a life force so as long as Merlin remains immortal, I'll share his immortality."

The trio paused, seeming to take in the weight of those words for the first time; Arthur could see the magnitude of the situation settling in their minds.

Ron looked unsure.

"So… there's no reincarnation?" Ron ventured to which both Arthur and Merlin simply shook their heads.

Hermione seemed cautious as she studied Arthur and Merlin once more. "What do you actually look like?" she finally questioned, cheeks colouring red.

Arthur and Merlin frowned at each other in momentary confusion before snorting in amusement and bursting out laughing.

Hermione, Ron and Harry exchanged confused looks while Arthur and Merlin struggled to recover from their outburst.

Finally Merlin recovered enough to focus back on the trio, a huge grin now stretched across his face. Arthur's own grin broadened slightly, it was good to see Merlin so carefree once more. "These are our actual bodies. It's a long story but I'm not as old as the legend made me out to be."

The trio still looked unsure but Harry was the first to speak again, gaze once again dark.

"If you're them, and you've been immortal this entire time, why not intervene, why not stop the wars, why not make a difference?"

Arthur's fingers clenched as he felt anger starting to simmer within him, the momentary jubilation quickly leaving both his and Merlin's continence. He was once again reminded of one of the reason why they'd decided to keep their identities secret in the first place.

Merlin however, didn't waver.

"We're not gods Harry, just because you don't know of our involvement in the events of history, does not mean we didn't try and it is unfair of you to expect everything from us. Just because we don't bare the physical scars, doesn't mean we haven't sacrificed things for the sake of the wizarding and mortal world alike."

Harry flinched as if slapped and Arthur could see his emotions waging a war inside him.

"We understand that you were hurt, that the war took your parents from you and we're sorry for that," Arthur finally told Harry, feeling sorry for the boy who had experienced so much pain at such a young age. "-but this is something you need to accept, "pondering on the "what ifs" will only destroy you in the long run," Arthur added serious, finally making eye contact with Harry.

As they regarded each other Arthur could see the sorrow mixing with acceptance before Harry finally lowered his gaze in reluctant acknowledgement.

Hermione, though also looking quite displeased, seemed to be considering all Arthur and Merlin had said.

"But that doesn't make any sense," Hermione shook her head, still looking to be deep in thought. "If what you're saying is true then why now? Why get so publicly involved with the Ministry of Magic?"

Arthur frowned, glancing at Merlin for confirmation.

Merlin nodded before speaking up.

"When Arthur and I were still young, a dragon told me of a destiny that he and I shared, a destiny that he and I never fulfilled while we were still at Camelot. While we were at the Department of Mysteries, we saw a prophecy with our names on it, we're assuming it has something to do with our original destinies." Merlin explained and as Arthur watched his husband, he felt a surge of pride.

He could see the determination radiating from Merlin as he stood there, it was the same determination Arthur had seen in him on the day of the battle of Camlann, when Merlin had taken the plunge and told Arthur about his magic.

The light of disbelieving wonder had returned to the trio's collective gaze, as if they still couldn't quite believe what they were hearing.

"What destiny?" Ron asked, his voice trembling slightly as he glanced at Harry.

Arthur could understand his reluctance, after all the trio had been through, a destiny or prophecy couldn't bode well.

"Our destiny to reunite the muggle and wizarding world," Arthur started, a slight smile playing across his lips as the Gryffindors' looks of disbelief increased.

Arthur and Merlin's gazes met. "We're going to reunite Albion," Merlin declared, firm, unwavering.

"But that's impossible, that would take years! Centuries even!" Hermione was the first to recover.

Merlin grinned, the light of mischief returning to his gaze, reminding Arthur of the boy he'd first met in the castle courtyard all those centuries ago.

"We have time." Merlin's grin widened even further.

The trio looked momentarily embarrassed before recovering themselves.

Hermione and Ron offered slightly strained smiles while Harry still looked uncomfortable.

"We need to go, Neville's probably already waiting for us," he stated.

"Bloody hell, completely forgot!" Ron exclaimed and Arthur couldn't help snorting, which earned an eye roll from Merlin.

"Where are you meeting, we might be able to take you straight there." Merlin offered.

"Saint Mungo's."

Merlin's eyes widened with concern.

"Is Neville, okay?"

"Oh yeah, it's his parents, they're stuck in the Long-Term ward," Ron waved off the concern.

"Ron!" Hermione looked scandalized.

"What? It's true, besides, it's not like they're going to tell anyone or judge Neville for it. "

Hermione rolled her eyes, still looking aggravated.

"Honestly!" She huffed but seemed to decide against pushing the subject any further.

Silence settled for a moment before Hermione turned her gaze towards Arthur and Merlin once more. She looked troubled.

"I-I still have so many questions," she murmured, looking truly bereft at the thought of everything that would remained unanswered.

Merlin smiled sadly back at her.

"I know, but if we tried to explain, I can promise you that it would only lead to more questions," he told her and Arthur couldn't help feeling slightly relieved, they might've just given away their biggest secret, but Arthur wasn't ready to give it all away, and it seemed like Merlin wasn't ready for that either.

"Come on, Hermione, we need to go," Harry said as he stepped forward.

"We'll take you… if you want?" Merlin offered, looking slightly unsure of himself.

The trio glanced at each other before seeming to come to a decision.

"We'd appreciate it," a smile appeared on Hermione's face for the first time since the confrontation started.

"Okay, let's go, no use making Neville wait," Arthur said, grabbing on to Harry's arm while Merlin took Ron and Hermione.

With a pop, they apparated into an alleyway right next to Saint Mungo's.

There was a moment of awkward silence before Hermione suddenly embraced Merlin, who looked slightly startled before patting Hermione awkwardly on the back.

Finally, she pulled back, looking slightly embarrassed but determined.

"I-We, just want to thank you," Hermione hesitated before ploughing on.

Ron nodded along, looking slightly uncomfortable as well. "Yeah, thanks for not, you know, Obliviating us," he added.

Harry also nodded, looking extremely stiff. "Let's go."

Hermione and Ron seemed to hesitate before hurrying out of the alleyway.

"Harry!" Merlin called out, causing Harry to pause before slowly turning around to look back at them while Hermione dragged Ron away.

"I really am sorry about your parents, if we could've prevented all the casualties of the war, we would've."

A sad smile appeared on Harry's face before he nodded.

"Thank you, and, I'm sorry, I know you must've done a lot more for the wizarding world than we could know." He said before turning back around. He paused again. "We won't tell anyone about you but…." Harry seemed to hesitate, glancing over his shoulder. Arthur grasped at his wand reflexively. "Let us know if you need any help, teenagers can be more useful than you think."

"Oh, believe me, I know," Merlin told him with a small smile and though it was slight, Harry finally smiled back.

Arthur gave a nod of gratitude as he met Harry's gaze. They might not be parting on the best of terms, but Arthur respected the trio's loyalty and dedication to doing what was right, it reminded him of his knights, and of Gwen.

The dark haired boy disappeared around the corner, leaving Arthur and Merlin on their own once more.

"Think telling them was the right choice?" Arthur couldn't help asking.

Merlin's gaze met Arthur's. "Guess we'll just have to hope for the best," was all he said instead.

Before Arthur could open his mouth to make a teasing remark on Merlin's impulsiveness, there was the sound of loud footsteps running towards the alleyway seconds before someone came barrelling around the corner into the alleyway.

"You're here!" The person gasped as they doubled over to rest their hands on their knees while panting for breath.

"Wha-"

"Malfoy?!" Arthur couldn't keep the shock out of his voice as he stared at the head of white blonde hair still bowed in exhaustion.

"Shhhh!" Merlin hissed and Arthur realized too late that he'd made a mistake.

Malfoy jerked upright. "I know, I know your Merlin, I saw it in my vision, I've known from the start," Malfoy rushed out, his words becoming almost incoherent is his haste.

The cold feeling was back and Arthur cursed their luck, how had they possibly stumbled into this situation twice in one day after having put so much effort into avoiding it for a thousand years, it really was too much.

Merlin didn't seem as surprised as Arthur, causing Arthur to feel even more frustrated.

"Draco," Merlin's gaze was steady as he stared at Malfoy, still looking cautious despite his apparent prior knowledge of Draco's revelation. "What are you doing here?"

Draco pulled himself up to his full height in what Arthur could only guess was an attempt to seem confident. Merlin and Arthur watched as Malfoy smoothed his hands over his clothes while trying to regain his composure.

"I-I needed to talk to you, I saw you'd be here," That had Merlin's eyebrow raising, though the rest of his face didn't betray his emotions.

Arthur pursed his lips. "Well, we're here."

Malfoy shot him a half-hearted glare.

"What's wrong?" Merlin enquired, causing Malfoy to turn his attention back to Merlin.

Malfoy shifted around uncomfortable before speaking up.

"I-I want you to take me on as a student."

Arthur saw his own shock mirrored on Merlin's expression.

"I-Draco, I don't know if that's such a good idea. I haven't had an apprentice in a very long time, I-"

"Please!"

"I know I'm not the most noble of people-" Draco's gaze strayed to the floor, his hands forming fists at his sides, seeming to grappling with himself. "-and that I don't deserve to be an apprentice but I need to find a way to make up for my parents' mistakes, had you not been there their mistakes would've become my own."

Merlin regarded Malfoy carefully.

"Why me," Merlin finally questioned.

"I want to become a healer, I want to help make progress in the medicinal field, and if there's anyone who can help me become the best healer I can be, it's you." Malfoy paused, his face colouring red. "I know it's a selfish request but…"

Merlin considered Draco carefully. "You would need to study it first, my guidance is no substitute for a healer qualification."

Malfoy's head snapped up, surprise flashing on his face.

Merlin smiled.

"I believe in you Draco, I want to help you, but I will only do so when you yourself are ready-" Malfoy opened his mouth but Merlin swiftly cut him off. "- and, if I am to teach you, then I will also be teaching you about your visions." Malfoy looked suddenly uncertain. "That's unnegotiable."

Malfoy paused, taking in all Merlin had said.

"I will. I'll do whatever it takes," Malfoy finally declared.

Merlin's eyes softened all the more, along with his smile but the sadness was there, prominent.

"Owl me if you need anything," Merlin said before suddenly reaching out and grabbing Arthur's arm.

Arthur felt the pull at his navel once more before they were pulled away from the alleyway and spinning to land back in their apartment.

Merlin let go of him and turned away as soon as they landed but Arthur didn't hesitate to grab his hand back.

"That was a bit dramatic," Arthur said.

Merlin remained facing away from him.

Arthur intertwined their fingers as he pulled Merlin around to face him.

Merlin's eyes were closed, face pained as silent tears rolled down his face.

Arthur felt a pained smile pull at his own lips as he took him into an embrace.

A choked sob made its way out of Merlin's chest as Arthur continued to hold him.

Arthur felt him shake slightly.

"Quite overwhelming, isn't it," Arthur remarked, his own voice thick. Merlin let out a watery chuckle.

"Just a bit," Merlin finally managed.

Arthur hummed in agreement.

A few moments of silence passed before Arthur spoke again.

"You know…he's not Morgana," he felt Merlin tensing slightly at his words.

"I know, I'm going to make sure of it," Merlin eventually replied.

Arthur sighed.

Merlin pulled away from Arthur, meeting his gaze determinedly.

"Please Arthur, I need to do thing, I need to help him," Arthur grimaced, "and it'll help me as well."

Arthur blinked in confusion at the last bit.

"What do you mean?"

"Neville's parents, Ron said they were in the long-term ward."

Arthur nodded slowly before his eyes widened in realization.

"You-"

"I have to try and find a way to heal them. Whatever's wrong with them, I could probably help!" Merlin interjected.

"Merlin, I know what Harry said hurt you, but you can't fix everything, you can't let this become your guilt."

"I-I won't," Merlin looked away, the guilt clear in his expression. "I just… need to do this."

Arthur considered this, carefully studying Merlin as he weighed his options.

"Alright, we do this, but if I see you going over the edge, you stop, I'm pulling you back. I can't have you go back to that spiral."

Merlin's guilt seemed to intensify. Arthur sighed.

"Promise me, Merlin," Arthur slightly tightened his hold on Merlin's hand.

Their eyes met and Arthur knew that Merlin understood, understood the fear that Arthur was trying so desperately to hide.

"I promise," Merlin's voice was slightly husky as he replied.

Arthur felt a knot in his stomach loosen, felt his muscles unclench.

It would be okay, the would make it work, like they always had.

Arthur smiled.

"So, you have a new healing project, a potential student and advisory duties and I have a minister to dethrone. You ready for this, Merlin?"

Merlin smiled back.

"Ready when you are, Sire."

And that's the end!

Would love to hear your thoughts on the end, I was stressing about it so much but I'm so happy right now!

Thanks again for all the love.
