CHAPTER 21-
I grinned as I sat at my desk in the Auror department, waiting for the clock to hit quarter to eleven. It was mid-March, and Hermione and I had never been happier. Apart from the morning sickness that she had experienced, she had begun craving things, one of those being sex. Lots of it. And I was all too happy to oblige. She was glowing with her pregnancy, even though she wasn't yet showing, telling me that she had always wanted children. Personally, I had been skeptical about the prospect. I'd been told since a young age that I would need an heir to continue the Malfoy line, but I no longer cared. I just wanted to make Hermione happy. She was thirteen weeks pregnant, and we had an appointment booked at St. Mungo's today so we could see our child for the first time.
'What are you grinning at?'
I smirked at Harry and shook my head. 'Nothing for you to worry about. I'll be back in about an hour.'
I grinned and left the office, taking the lift to the Department of Mysteries to get Hermione. She was talking with Rebecca in the entrance. I held a finger to my lips and Rebecca noticed it, continuing to talk as if I wasn't there. I crept up behind Hermione and gathered her in my arms, reveling at her surprised squeak.
'How is my gorgeous girl on this fine day?'
'She'd prefer it if you didn't sneak up on her!' She turned in my arms and hugged me, laughing quietly.
'Ready to go?' I asked. She nodded, bidding goodbye to Rebecca, and we began walking to the Ministry atrium. Just before we got to the apparation point, Hermione tugged on my hand. I turned to her to see that she was nibbling her bottom lip. 'Are you okay?'
'I'm nervous, Draco.'
'Everything's going to be just fine, I'm sure of it.'
She gave me a timid smile, and we apparated to the foyer of St. Mungo's, asking at the desk where the maternity ward was, since neither of us had any idea. We headed over to the other side of the hospital, Hermione grabbing all of the leaflets that she could find on baby care before and after pregnancy whilst I checked us in under the name of Malfoy. I turned around from the main desk and raised my eyebrows at her frantic behaviour. I made her sit down and talked quietly to her. 'Hermione, you have my mum to talk to, okay? First-hand experience is better than a load of leaflets.' She nodded and leant her head on my shoulder as we waited for a medi-witch to come and get us. My mother feigned surprise when Hermione told her that she pregnant, but hugged my girlfriend in glee and they began planning on what furniture to buy to turn the spare room into a nursery. Mr Granger was overjoyed with the news, but Mrs Granger shouted at both of us, demanding Hermione get an abortion. When we obviously refused, we were thrown out of the house. I knew that Hermione was still upset by it, as any normal person would be with such a conversation, but she was trying to ignore what had happened.
'The Malfoy family?' We both looked up to see and middle aged blond medi-witch smiling at us from the consultant room corridor, and we followed her to the third room. From what Hermione had described, it was set up exactly the same as a muggle maternity room; a bed in one corner with a chair next to it, a screen and the ultrasound equipment situated adjacent to it, and a desk in one corner of the room with three chairs around it. 'Please, take a seat. Before we begin today, I'll just go through what these appointments will be like. I'm Madame Scott, and I'll be your medi-witch throughout the pregnancy. After I've taken a look at your baby, we'll book another appointment. If you need any help during the pregnancy, simply pop into the maternity ward, and someone will always be able to help. Now, is this your first child?' We both nodded at her cheery voice, and Hermione reached over to hold my hand which I squeezed. 'I can see that you're both very nervous. It's quite normal, even for couples who've had several children. Will you both come over to the bed?' We got up and followed the medi-witch, Hermione walking very slowly. 'Mrs Malfoy, could-'
'Oh, we're not married.' Hermione's face turned bright red and I had to try hard not to laugh.
'Sorry. Miss Granger, could you please lie down on the bed and roll up your blouse?' Hermione did as she asked and I sat in the chair beside the bed and held her hand as Madame Scott squirted some clear gel onto Hermione's tummy. She then took a small device off the machine next to the bed, and began to roll it over the gel, spreading it on the skin and bringing up a black and white picture on the screen. 'I'm just going to look for your baby's heartbeat.' She moved the device around again and a faint beating sound filled the room. My eyes filled with tears as I saw the outline of a very small baby on the screen. Hermione was crying, but she managed to speak.
'Why does it have two heads?'
The medi-witch laughed. 'Nothing's wrong, Miss Granger. They're very healthy.'
'They?' I asked.
'You're having twins.' Hermione grinned, squeezing my hand. 'Is there a history of twins in either of your families?' We both shook our heads. 'Well, you will need to take extra care of yourself since you'll be carrying two babies. You'll also have more ultrasound appointments as it's twins. We'll have another sessions in three weeks, and I should be able to tell you the sex of your baby by then. How many copies of the ultrasound do you want made?'
I stayed silent, taking in the shock of being a father to two children instead of one. 'Draco?'
'Oh... ermmm… three.' She smiled, and made copies of the picture on the screen, handing me the stack of photos as Hermione scourgified the goo off her stomach, rolling her top back down.
'Make sure you book another appointment with the secretary before you leave.'
We left, hand in hand, Hermione leading the way. She booked another appointment, but not before showing the secretary the ultrasound, who cooed and awed at it. We began walking to the apparation point, but I was lagging behind, still not believing that we were going to have two children.
Hermione turned around, grinning, but it dropped a little when she saw my face. 'Say something, Draco.'
'We're going to need a bigger house.' The grin reappeared and she hugged me. 'Sorry, I was just shocked. Two babies instead of one… wow.' I squeezed her hand, and we apparated back home. Opening the back door, I put an ultrasound picture under a magnet on the fridge and put the other in the pocket of my blazer. 'I'm just going to give this to my mum.' Hermione smiled, nodding as she began preparing lunch whilst I left the house, crossing the street and knocking on my mum's front door. Fenrir answered.
'Good afternoon, Draco.' I smiled warmly at the father figure that I had acquired. We had been out a few times together. Nothing particularly special, but he had suggested it, and what we did was something I had wished Lucius had done when I was younger. We'd go out to watch a football match and have lunch in a small café, talking about our interests and time at Hogwarts. Of course, when I was younger the equivalent would have been going to see a Quidditch match, followed by my father actually letting me in his smoking room to have my first glass of fire whiskey, but it never happened, and even if it did, I was fairly certain that it wouldn't have been as enjoyable or comforting.
'Hi, Fenrir. Is my mum around?' He nodded, and brought me through to the living room where my mum was sewing a quilt together. She looked up as we entered and she smiled, dropping the quilt to the settee.
'Draco! How did the appointment go?'
'It was great. We're having twins.' I handed her an ultrasound picture, and she squealed, hugging me.
'Congratulations! I'm so happy for you. Where's Hermione?'
'Making lunch.' Mum tutted at me.
'Draco Lucius Malfoy, I brought you up to be a gentleman, did I not? Go and help her!' She swatted my head, and the two of them came across the road with me to help Hermione make lunch and eat with us.
After lunch, Hermione and I returned to the Ministry. When I got back up to my department, an owl flew through the window and landed on Harry's desk opposite mine. It was a Hogwarts owl, and Harry looked at it curiously as he took the letter from its' leg. As per usual, it flew off straight away. 'Is that from Ginny?' I asked.
'It's her hand writing.' He opened the letter, and after a minute or so, he stood up violently, knocking his chair to the floor. The letter was slightly crumpled. I stood up, and walked over to his desk.
'What's wrong, Harry?' Everyone had stopped working to watch Harry push past me, and run out into the corridor. 'Get back to work. I'll go and see what's going on.' I ran after him, managing to corner him before he got to the lifts. 'What the hell is wrong with you?'
'Ginny's pregnant, and she only thinks to tell me now, three months later, and that she's getting an abortion tonight, saying she's too young. I can't let her do that to my child. I have to get to Hogwarts to stop her.'
