Chapter 21: Fireflies
When Benny woke it was to the sound of a door as it slowly creaked open. Through the dull pain that seemed to encompass his body, and the almost overwhelming desire to return to the blissful land of dreams he sat up and took in the sight around him. How had he ended up in bed with the covers pulled over him and a bottle of water on his nightstand? Hadn't he fallen asleep somewhere else before? What was he doing? Why was he in pain? And better yet why was he sleeping in the middle of the day?
Through the late afternoon sun he watched as Ethan peered in through the open door, and upon seeing him flashed a tired, but sad smile.
"Hey," whispered Ethan quietly as he entered the room, and took a seat at the edge of their bed. Benny returned the smile and stopped when he caught sight of his reflection in the mirror above his desk. There were dark circles under his eyes; his skin was a sickly pale color, and to top it off it looked as though he hadn't slept in days. He was jolted back into reality when he felt his boyfriend touched his arm. "How are you… uh… you know… feeling?"
"Sore," whispered Benny as he picked up the bottle and struggled with the cap. Ethan quickly reached out and uncapped it for him. With cold water rushing against his raw and dry throat he allowed himself a moment of tranquility. He reached out for his belly and stopped when he realized he was no longer pregnant. He dropped the bottle as the memories came rushing forward, and with them a fear that had plagued the darkest of his nightmares. "Where's Matthew?" Benny tossed off the covers and tried to get up. "Where's our son?"
"He… he's…" Ethan's voice cracked and he took in a deep breath. Benny watched as the younger boy bit his lip and quickly turned away with a sniffle. The few seconds his boyfriend kept his back to him felt like an eternity, and when he finally did turn to face him there were tears running down his cheeks. He quickly wiped them away and with a tired tone said: "Matthew's… at the hospital, in the NICU right now. He was having problems breathing and Doctor G said a bunch of other things, I didn't really understand it, but he needed immediate medical attention. I went to visit him while you were sleeping and it's bad…. Our…" by now he was crying. "Our son's hooked up to a bunch of machines now."
"I want to see him," said Benny as he forced himself to stand. Once he was vertical his legs gave out from underneath him. He felt Ethan place a hand on his shoulder and heard his mumble something about taking it easy, and unable to keep his emotions in check he spat out: "Get off me! I don't need your help!"
"B, you need to-"
"DON'T TOUCH ME! I WANT TO SEE MY SON!"
"The Doctor said-"
"WHAT DO YOU NOT YOU FUCKING UNDERSTAND? I NEED TO SEE MY SON!"
He felt Ethan touch him again and without thinking he swung his arm. He felt the slap before he actually heard it, and watched with horror as his boyfriend stumbled backwards with a look of shock on his face.
Benny looked down at his hand and felt his body go numb. What had he done? He had just struck Ethan, the person he loved. He opened his mouth to apologize when Evelyn, Daniel and Doctor G entered through the door. His dad scooped him up and he did his best to fight against him and explain everything that had just transpired. He hadn't meant to hit E, it was an accident; he just wanted to see Matthew. Why couldn't he see him? Why couldn't they understand that?
His Grandma placed her hand on his shoulder, and the moment it made contact he felt himself drifting off to sleep.
"Benny you need to relax," said Daniel calmly as he lay him down on his bed. Benny struggled to keep his eyes open and his mind focused. "You need to rest. The magic from your pregnancy is cycling through your body, and it'll be a couple of days before you can move about on your own."
The world blurred, and his father face vanished into the shadows beyond. Before he succumbed to the power of his Grandma's spell he felt something sliding down his cheeks. As he fell into the darkness of sleep he realized he was crying.
When Benny woke up again it was to the bright morning light of the rising sun. He looked up at the roof, felt the strange pain from the previous day, and tried his best to banish the worst of the nightmares from the previous night. The door opened, and Ethan wandered in again, this time with a neutral expression and a dark bruise on his left cheek.
"E I'm so sorry about yesterday," said Benny as he struggled to reach out for the other boy. "I didn't mean to hit you, it was an accident I swear, I would never hurt you on purpose."
"I know," said Ethan as he stayed by the door his eyes focused on the ground. "With my telepathy I could feel all the emotions coming from you and I knew you were confused after giving birth and everything."
"But I hit you, I…" He looked down at his own hands and began to cry. "I want you to know it'll never happen again, that I'll make it up to you no matter what I have to do! I just… I just don't want you to be afraid of me."
"Hey B, it's ok, I swear." Ethan was at his side in a moment and pulled him into a sideways hug. "You were worried about Matthew I understand, and I know that no matter what happens it'll never happen again. I'm not afraid of you and I never will be."
Benny nodded and wiped his eyes. "Did you seem him? Were you at the hospital this morning?"
"It was a bad day for him today," whispered Ethan as he moved to the other side of the bed. Benny shivered, the look in the other boy's eyes, combined with his monotone voice was beginning to unnerve him. He absently picked up the small bunny and turned it over in his hands trying to imagine where everything had gone wrong. "I was just visiting him… and then there was a problem with the machines…. And all of a sudden… these alarms went off and-and… He… he wasn't breathing…. He wasn't breathing Benny! Our son wasn't breathing!"
Ethan began to sob, and Benny quickly scooted forward and took him in arms. He felt his boyfriend shake as he cried, and gently rubbed his back. Yesterday Ethan had been strong for both of them, and today Benny realized, it was his turn.
"Matthew's gonna be ok," said Benny as he rocked him back and forth in his arms. "We both know our son is a fighter, he hasn't given up yet, and he won't."
"He wasn't breathing," gasped Ethan as he continued to cry. "It was only a few seconds but he wasn't breathing and I couldn't… I couldn't watch."
Benny let go of him and placed a kiss on his forehead. "We're his parents, which means he's as tough as we are. You have to have faith in him."
"Why is this happening? Why is he being punished? Did we do something wrong?"
"I don't know E," whispered Benny as he once again pulled him close and kissed his cheek. "I just don't know."
"When Yaga was impersonating mom," began Benny as he looked down at the small stuffed rabbit in his hands and then finally up at his father's eyes. "I said a lot of personal things to her because I thought she was real…. I… I need to know something dad."
"What is it?" asked Daniel as he placed a hand on his shoulder. "Benjamin I want you to know that you can tell me anything."
"Are you disappointed in everything I've done? With getting pregnant, having the baby and dating Ethan?"
There was a moment awkward silence before Daniel let out a soft laugh. "I'm proud of everything you've done. You fought for your family, you've done more to get where you are than of the Weirs before you. Yes I wish you had waited a little longer before dabbing into magic you didn't understand but you've risen to the occasion. You're a good kid, you always have been, and I know with Ethan at your side you'll be happy."
"Then why are these things happening to Matthew?" asked Benny as his voice cracked. He squeezed the bunny tight. "Why is it always like this for the Weirs? Why can't we ever just get the ending we deserve?"
"Times change Benny, I think it's time you took your own advice. Have to faith in your son, have faith in Matthew."
"But-"
"And most importantly know this- you didn't do anything wrong. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and I know you've heard that but it helps to have someone else say it for you."
"Thanks dad," said Benny and he hugged him. His father nodded, noticed Ethan standing in the hallway and motioned for him to come in.
"H-hi Mr. Weir," said Ethan as he kept his eyes focused on the ground and shuffled his feet uncertainly. "H-how are you?"
"First of all you can either call me Daniel or dad, and second you don't have to be afraid of me, you weren't when we first met."
"S-sorry, it's just starting to sink in that you're my boyfriend's dad and I guess I'm just a little nervous now that I actually have a chance to meet you."
"Come here," mumbled Benny and held out his arms. Ethan settled into his body. He smiled and then placed his lips against the younger boy's neck and took in his mango scented shampoo. His grin widened, no urge to run off and throw up, and with the slightest hint of mischief in his voice whispered: "I love you, but your acting like a big goof right now. My dad doesn't bite, I promise."
"Unless you threaten my family," said Daniel with a sly grin that matched his son's all too well. "In which case I'm as lethal as a shark that's adapted to the land."
"I brought you something," said Ethan as he clicked his phone and then held it up. "It's not the best, but it's a picture of Matthew, I took it today when I was at the hospital."
Benny examined the picture and felt his heart break. The quality wasn't that best, but he could make out a small infant with a tuft of brown hair, and attached to the small body was wires, tubes, and various other machines. He let out a weary sigh and felt Ethan flinched in his arms.
"He'll be ok," mumbled Benny as he placed a kiss on his boyfriend's neck and held him tight. "He has to be."
By the third day Benny, with permission from Doctor G, was not only allowed out of bed and more importantly allowed to visit the hospital. By eleven in the morning he found himself in the NICU with a single hand resting on the cold surface of the incubator. With a heavy heart he watched as Matthew's chest rose and fell, and after a few moments felt Ethan take his free hand. It was hard to see their son laying their, his skin ashen, and for the most part his body unmoving.
"How long?" asked Benny unable to take his eyes off their baby. "Did Doctor G tell you how long he'd be in there for?"
"He said it's different for every baby," whispered Ethan and he leaned against him. "It could be up to a month maybe two or even longer."
"He's right," said Doctor G as he stepped into the room with a clipboard in hand. "There were some magical complications as well. I'm going to be honest with both of you right now, going off the records I'd say he's going to be in here for the long haul. Right now I'd say two months, his body is still developing, and even with the powers of modern magic it's gonna be difficult to help speed the process along."
"But he's out the danger zone?" asked Benny. He felt tears burn at the corners of his eyes. "He's not just gonna die right? Or stop breathing right? Right? Please just… just tell he's going to be ok."
"I have faith your son will be leaving here with both you and your boyfriend, of that I don't have a single doubt. Now if you'll excuse me I have an appointment with someone with a rather similar problem to yours."
He stopped at the door and suddenly said: "Ethan, Benjamin."
"Yeah?"
"I didn't have a chance to say this earlier, but congratulations on the birth of your son. I know it may seem like a hollow compliment with the recent turn of events but I wanted to be the first to compliment you on a life where the fear of having a child won't but there. You have a whole new life to live, and right to see, but it's life to love. Both the Morgans and Weirs have always been fighters, I can see it in this little guy too."
"Thank you."
Benny waved and watched as the doctor left them alone with their son. He placed a hand on the machine, and sighed. It felt cold to his touch, and the thought of a plastic divider between him and Matthew sent a wave of unease through him.
"One day we'll be able to hold him," said Benny as he turned to face his boyfriend. He realized Ethan was also crying and gave him a hug. "One day he'd be able to sleep in our house together, and no matter how far away that day may seem, it's going to happen."
Benny was jarred awake by the sound of the house phone going off. Ever since giving birth almost a week ago he had spent the better part of his days either fast asleep or at the hospital. He groggily reached for the handset and answered:
"Weir residence."
"Benny its Doctor G."
All at once the exhaustion was gone from his body. "Is everything ok? Did something happen?"
"I'm afraid we're going to need you and Ethan at the hospital immediately." His voice remained neutral. "Something's happened, and we need you here."
"Is Matthew ok?" He felt his hand begin to shake. "Is he all right?"
"Just come as soon as you can. There are some things that one should never say over the phone."
Benny hung up and darted off the sofa, he called out to Ethan, and by the time he had slipped on his shoes both his boyfriend and father were standing at the door waiting for him.
"I'll drive," said Daniel as he motioned for the keys. Benny shook his head and before he could protest was stopped. "I think it would be better if I did, you and Ethan are clearly worried. It wouldn't do us any good if you got into an accident on the way there."
"Fine, whatever. Let's just go."
Twenty minutes later Benny, Ethan and Daniel found themselves being led through the hospital by a nurse. Like the doctor neither her voice nor face gave any hint as to what may or may not have happened. She led them past the NICU and Benny felt his heart sink. Why weren't they going in there? Had Matthew…. He stifled a cry and stopped when she motioned to a room.
"Doctor G is waiting for you inside."
Benny practically pushed her aside as he darted in. He saw the Doctor sitting at the far end of the room. He gave them a half hearted way, and then stood.
"I don't know how it happened but an hour ago the machines began to alert us that something was wrong. We checked in on your son and I couldn't believe it…."
"If he ok?" asked Benny as his voice cracked. "Is our son ok?"
"Take a look for yourself."
The nurse pushed in the small cart, and resting in the cradle on top was Matthew. Benny felt his knees go weak as he watched the small boy give a yawn, open his eyes and then close them again.
"He's, oh my god," gasped Benny as he looked at the Doctor and then to Ethan. He grabbed onto the other boy for support. "He's healthy, he's… he's… how?"
"My educated guess," said Doctor G with a grin. "He got tired of being sick, and somehow managed to use the his magic to cure himself. Children are powerful, especially those born with two equally powerful parents. I'd like to keep him overnight, for observational reason. But I can say as of now, in his current state that Matthew Weir-Morgan is one hundred percent ready to go home."
Benny felt Ethan's hand go weak in his, and quickly pulled him close. He held him tight and mumbled the single word again:
"Home."
Benny spent the better part of the night in the room with both his infant son and Ethan. He felt the small baby move in his arms and gently rocked him back and forth. He watched as Matthew's chest fell and rose with each breath and smiled. For the last few months he had felt the small guy move around inside him, and for even longer he had felt the infant growing, but here seeing him in person was something else. He heard Ethan snore and grinned. His poor boyfriend was out cold in one of the chairs on the other side of the room, his exhaustion and emotions finally having caught up with him.
"You scared us," whispered Benny as he continued to stare at his sleeping boy. "You have no idea how worried your Papa and I were about you. But your ok now and that's all that matters."
Matthew yawned, and Benny felt his heart swell as he watched the little baby move. Every movement was worth it; every single moment with his son had been worth it. In the light glow of the evening light he whispered: "And tomorrow you'll be home with your daddies where you belong."
"Ok," said Benny as he secured the beanie on his son's head. He let out a laugh, Matthew was still a tiny kid, and the hat seemed almost comically large on him. The baby shifted for a moment and was sound asleep within moments; he carefully lay him in his car seat and buckled him in.
"You're driving," said Ethan as he pushed the keys into Benny's hands.
"Wait why do I have to drive? You should drive."
"Because you got to spend all night with our son," said Ethan as he bent over the car seat and kissed Matthew. "I have a right to at least spend the drive home with him. Besides you've been dying to get back on the road plus you got to feel him move around in your belly so I deserve this."
"Fine then you've got the first set of late night feedings and changes."
Matthew stirred, let out a little cry, and was once again asleep.
"Fine," mumbled Ethan as he took the car seat from Benny. "If that means I get to spend some extra time with my son I'll do it."
"You're a good boyfriend E," said Benny as he gave him a loving kiss and a pat on the butt. "What do you say? Ready to go home?"
"Ready to go home."
"Welcome home," called everyone in hushed tones as Ethan and Benny stepped through the door with their son in tow. The duo looked at the gathering of their friends and family, smiled and then gently closed the door behind them.
"Since you didn't have a baby shower," said Erica with a grin as she motioned to the parents, and small gathering of friends. "We decided to have a welcome home party for you guys instead." She bent down to look at the tiny infant. "He's so cute! Oh my gosh let me hold him!"
"It was my idea," said Rory as he pushed past her to see the baby. "No I want to hold him first."
They two glared at each other and began to walk away while bickering, at least until Rory rushed off with a hand over his mouth and Erica in hot pursuit. Ethan and Benny placed the car seat in front of the sofa and Ethan eagerly picked up their son.
"Oh look at him," said Samantha as she leaned in for a better view. "He's so handsome, and beautiful, and he's got your nose honey."
"And would you look at that hair," whispered Ross. "He's definitely got the Morgan hair."
"I dunno," said Daniel as he examined his grandson. "That's a Weir's head of hair if I've ever seen one."
"Look at the coloring and tell me doesn't have the Morgan shine."
"He doesn't. That is clearly the Weir volume he's got in there."
"Look at you boys," said Evelyn as she shook her head and gave them both a sharp tap. "Honestly arguing over the hair on your grandson's head. You ought to be glad here's here happy and healthy."
"He doesn't look like an alien," said Jane as she peered at the sleeping infant. "Most babies look kinda like gross aliens but he doesn't. He's just tiny."
When the crowd parted Sarah and Jesse joined the boys. She handed them a small bag, and took a seat with the other vampire. Benny reached in and gave her a confused look when he pulled out a matching pair of necklaces.
"For you and Ethan," said Sarah with a smile. "When they're together they'll form a heart, and when they're apart they'll say the name of the person you love."
"Thanks," said the Jesse as he rolled his eyes. "For stopping Yaga and helping me get my soul back."
"We should be thanking you," said Ethan suddenly as he handed Matthew to Benny and extended his hand. "I know you gave Rory the Rose Blood to put in his box. Without it we wouldn't have been able to stop her."
"Thank you," said Benny, as he looked Jesse in the eyes. "Honestly, thank you for all the help you've given us. If you need anything, we've got your back."
"Yeah well I don't go around asking for help normally," whispered Jesse as he crossed his arms and looked away. A small smile crept across his face. "But I'm glad to hear that."
"I'm happy everything worked out for you," said Sarah as she looked down at her hands. "And I wish I could stay longer but my flight leaves soon, and I can't miss it."
"Promise you'll visit us when you have a chance?" asked Ethan as he stood up and gave her a hug.
"Every chance I get," she gave Benny a quick kiss on the cheek and then took Jesse's hand in hers. "Take care you two, and promise to send me a bunch of photos."
Benny watched as the duo left and then turned to his boyfriend. "I told you they'd end up together again."
"Yeah," whispered Ethan as he looked at their son. "But we got the real prize."
Benny leaned on the porch and took in a deep breath of the fresh evening air. He looked up at the twilight sky and smiled. It was almost like he was in a dream, he was happy, Ethan was happy, and more importantly they had their son. Their healthy baby boy…. He heard someone step onto the porch behind him, and grinned knowing without looking who it was.
"I knew I'd find you out here," said Ethan as he closed the porch door and leaned on the rail next to him. "Matthew's with his grandparents right now so I figured I'd come and talk to you before I dunno… everything else happened."
"For the first time since all of this started I feel like everything finally makes sense."
"I know, no more craziness, and no more of that stupid are we in love or not nonsense."
"You know things won't stay this way forever."
"I figured as much," said Ethan as he laid his head on his boyfriend's shoulder. "Matthew will grow up faster than we realize, he's already shown signs of having powers, and we still need to get jobs while balancing school, fighting monsters, and being full time parents."
"A whole life of living ahead of us now."
"Yup."
"Hey E?"
"What's up B?"
"I need to ask you something," said Benny as he pulled his boyfriend close. "We've been through so much these past few months and I can honestly say we've been 'dating' way longer than it's been official."
"You mean all the times we used to hang out as kids? Or just spend time with another?"
"Yeah... we've been an unofficial couple for almost our entire lives, and I know I said I wanted to take things slow, but let's face it- slow isn't for us." Ethan raised an eyebrow and Benny entwined his fingers in his boyfriend's and held up their hands. "And I know you feel the same way."
"Yeah…."
"For as long as we've know each other I've always done my best to protect you, to be your knight in shining armor. And when I was pregnant I realized that sometimes I need someone to help me keep myself safe, someone who not only understands me, but knows how I think and feel." A thin almost transparent ribbon of energy swirled around their wrists before blossoming into a bright red and golden light. Benny leaned forward and continued: "When a Weir finds their soul mate it creates a magic so powerful that the energy itself becomes visible. I don't need my magic to tell me that I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
He took in a deep breath. "You're my best friend, my boyfriend, and now I'm asking if you would do me the honor of becoming my husband?"
"Y-yes," cried Ethan as threw himself against Benny and in the glow of the setting summer sun and magic light shared a kiss. "Do you even have to ask?"
Benny grinned, gave his hand a light squeeze and the magic vanished leaving two golden and red bands on each of their ring fingers. Together they watched as the sun vanished past the horizon and fireflies took to the night sky around them.
"Ready to go back inside and be parents?" asked Benny as he watched the soft yellows lights swirl about creating mesmerizing golden streaks. He remembered a time long ago when he and his fiancé had chased after the light. For a moment he saw them once again, two young boys running through an open field, arms stretched out, and laughing as they struggled to keep up with the other.
"Ready," said Ethan as he watched a pair of fireflies take to the skies far above. No more running, no more chasing, they had already found what they needed, each other. As he watched the sight before him, he saw the faintest hint of a shadow as it ran across the wide field with his arms stretched out wide, and a smile that reminded him all too much of his soon to be husband. He grinned, and knew that one day it would Matt's turn to chase after his own fireflies.
Together, Benny and Ethan turned their backs on the golden lights, and placed their hands on the handle. With one last look at each other, they opened the door and reentered the house. Behind them the fireflies continued to move about in an ever changing pattern.
The End
A/N: Honestly this ending was changed so much from what was originally planned. I begged and pleaded with Takari to give it a happy ending, but he's such a sucker for sob stories that it almost ended very tragically. Luckily we came to a compromise, Benny and Ethan got their happy ending, but they had to work for it. But enough about that, it's time for my announcement.
I know this may seem harsh but I'm going to be honest: the MBSAV subsection is slowly fading away, dying almost. There's not as many updates as there used to be, stories are falling into the infinite abyss of never being finished, and authors are vanishing left and right. And with as many stories as I have to tell, I don't want to become one of them. I don't have the time to write, heck 'Feeling Something New', was supposed to have been finished way before now. And to be honest I only wrote 10% of it, the other 90% was my co-author. In fact he doesn't want me telling you this but I will- he's the one who came up with the original idea, and he helped come up with 'Parentship', he's just embarrassed to have helped writhed a Benny/Ethan fan fiction since he's an avid supported of Benny/Erica and Ethan/Sarah. If you have any questions about anything that happened send either him or me a PM and we'll happily answer.
Sorry I'm getting off track. What I'm trying to say is: this is my final chapter on fan fiction, and it's with a heavy heart that I bid you all farewell. It was an honor writing for you, but as a favorite character of mine once said: "Times change, and so must I." Take care, and no matter what happens keep on writing.
Bowing out for the first and final time,
