A\N: So I just want to say that I'm glad you guys seem to be reading and enjoying this story. Also I might be updating a bit slower as the Chicago PD finale (second last scene) gave me writer's block and now I'm having trouble connecting all of my ideas and piecing them together. That is why I am so grateful to have friends like ChicagoFireLover101 who gave me an idea for this chapter. So if any of you guys have any ideas you want to see just put it in your review or send me a PM and I'll see what I can do. If I do use your idea though I'll for sure credit you. Italics are flashbacks.

Chapter 21

As Gabriela sat at Matt's bedside she thought about he life over the past two and a half years. She never would have imagined no matter how bad life seemed then that she would be so happy and then in an instinct have everything taken away from her. That argument that she and Matt had now seemed so distant and she wishes she could kiss him and hug him and tell him how much she loved him and how sorry she was. But she couldn't. He was in intensive care with severe head trauma and amnesia and she couldn't stand being in the room for more then half an hour.

It had been a little over a week and day by day the chance of Matt recovering became less and less. Not being able to take it anymore she escaped to Shay and Severide's apartment in hopes that her best friends would be able to give her comfort in this horrible situation.

"I just I know I'm being selfish Leslie but it's like I can't help it," She cried to her friend, "I want everything back the way it was before this happened. It was all my fault for pushing him away and if I hadn't he wouldn't be in that hospital room. It was all my fault and I just can't look at him knowing he may never be the same because of me."

"Oh sweetie," Leslie side hugged her, "It wasn't your fault you had an argument and something terrible happened but you didn't cause it."

"But I did Leslie and the thing is I have been so selfish in our relationship. I know that and I want Matt to yell at me and I want him to tell me how awful I've been. I need to able to tell him I'm sorry for everything that I did but I can't. I can't and it hurts me."

"Hey Gabby," Kelly walked into the living room carrying both twins each sporting complete fire fighter outfits complete with little hats.

"Oh Kelly Severide," Shay looked on, "Did you just have fun dressing up two little babies. And you think you're so manly."

"For the record Shay these are note frilly outfits they are cool outfits," He told her confidently, "And if memory serves me correctly you bought them."

"Yeah," Shay couldn't help but laugh, "They do look cute. What do you think Gabby?"

Although she was trying not to Gabby slightly smiled, "They look adorable." She got out her phone and began snapping pictures of her sons who were both still content in Severide's arms.

"So…" Leslie decided a change in subject was needed, "You mentioned Laura's pregnant?"

"Yeah eight weeks. She actually has a doctor's appointment today to see if she's having twins or not. She's already gained a lot of weight and she's been pretty sick."

"Twins?" Severide looked perplexed, "Do they run in your family or something?"

"No."

"Besides identical twins aren't hereditary only fraternal twins are." Shay added as Javier saw Gabby and began crying.

"Here Severide," Gabby stood up and walked towards him taking Javier into her arms and holding him close, "ssh baby Mommy's here," She soothed.

Javier stopped crying and wrapped his hand around Gabby's thumb while sucking on his other thumb.

"You're tired aren't you?" Gabby caressed his forehead with her free hand and sat down on the couch. Once settled she reached for the baby bag and pulled it towards her. She opened it and ruffled through it until she had found what she was looking for. A Chicago Blackhawks soother on a green string. "Here sweetie," He attached the soother to his onsie and took out her thumb and offered him the soother instead. Javier latched on to the soother and as he began sucking on it his eyes began to drop as he drifted off to sleep.

"Gabby," Severide looked down to see Rafael asleep in his arms, "Is he okay to sleep without a soother?"

"Yeah he's fine," Gabby smiled as she watched her son sleep in her friend's arms, "You can put hum in his car seat if you want. He's pretty good, doesn't usually wake up."

"Okay," Severide walked towards where she was sitting and with both hands placed Rafael in his car seat.

"Here want to attach this to him just in case he wakes up and wants it," Gabby handed him another Chicago Blackhawks soother this one on a blue string.

"Sure," Severide did as he was asked and then stepped back slowly so he wouldn't awake either sleeping infant.

The sun shinning on her dark curls Eva shaded her eyes away as she looked and then crossed at a crosswalk. Looking over her shoulder she sighed, "Diego! Lets go!"

Her eight-year-old younger brother didn't look up as he continued to drag his feet across the sidewalk.

"Uh! You know I have to walk with you," She stomped her foot impatiently as she waited for what seemed like forever for her younger brother catch up. When he finally did he did not look impressed.

"So? I don't care."

"That's because you're not the one who gets in trouble," She grabbed his arm, "Now lets go!"

"Get off of me!" Diego shook her away and glared, "I can d what I want, I'm not a baby."

"Well you're acting like one. Is all this really worth it?"

"What?" He demanded.

"You've been acting sulky and jealous ever since Mom told us she was pregnant. You're jealous of the new baby because you know you won't get everything you want anymore."

"No! You don't have any idea!" He was quick to say but in reality she was spot on. He'd been the youngest for so long he didn't know how to deal with having two new cousins let alone a new sibling.

"Oh come on Diego," Eva rolled her eyes, "You're not fooling anyone. I was just as upset when I found out about you."

"You were only five!"

"Three years younger then you!" She didn't miss a beat, "But I got over it didn't I. I like you most of the time now."

Diego wasn't' in the mood for joking and he sped off faster then her and reached their house at the end of the street. He saw both of his parents cars home and sighed. He figured they were back from his mother's doctor's appointment. He opened the door without saying anything and dropped his backpack at the door and made his way through the living room and into the kitchen. That's when he saw it. The ultrasound picture on the fridge, it showed not one baby but two. His mother was having twins.

"Diego sweetie," Laura walked into the kitchen in an attempt to talk to her son but he pushed past her and ran upstairs slamming the door to his bedroom just as Eva came in the front door.

"What's his problem now?" She asked.

"I'm having twins." Laura told her flat out.

"Twins?" Eva made it sound more like a question, "But I thought you said it was unlikely.

"No, I said it was a possibility because I 'm growing so much I didn't say I wasn't having twins."

"Whatever," Eva tried to find something positive to say but after not being able to think of anything she grabbed her backpack and stormed up the stairs copying her brother's actions.

Laura ran a hand over her face as tears fell down her face, "Antonio," She felt her husband's hand on her back, "Maybe this was a bad idea."

"No, no Laur," He soothed, "They'll come around; I was furious with my mother when I found out she was pregnant with Gabby. Its an adjustment they're going to have to get used to."

"I just… I mean I expected Diego to be upset but I thought Eva would be happy. She seemed so positive before."

"I don't know babe. Want me to talk to them?"

"No, you take Diego and I'll talk to Eva."

"Okay," Antonio gave her a kiss on the cheek as he made his way past her and up the stairs and into his son's room. Once in front of the door he knocked once before opening the door, "Hey Diego. Mind if we have a talk?"

"Do I have a choice?"

"No you don't and drop the attitude."

"Fine," Diego moved from his desk chair to his bed and wasn't surprised when his father grabbed the chair and rolled it over to the bed before taking a seat.

"Now I know you don't want a lecture but you need to understand that change is a part of life and some things happen we don't like. "

"You're right I don't like this."

"I know you don't bud and that's okay. I was the same way when I found out Abuela was pregnant with your Aunt Gabby."

This got Diego's attention, "But you and Aunt Gabby are best friends."

"We are now but it took me awhile to realize how lucky I was to have her in my life."

"When did you realize it?"

"When I was twelve and she was two. All the girls thought she was adorable and loved seeing me play with her. It wasn't the right way for me to spend time with her but it made me realized how special she was."

"Did it work?" He wondered, "Did it get all the girls to go out with you?"

"Diego," Antonio realized he had used a bad example, "That's not the point alright? The point is that I wasn't to thrilled of the idea at first.

Ten-year-old Antonio Dawson whipped the snow and dirt off of his boots before running into the house, "Mom! He called, "I'm going to play street hockey with Adam and Henry!"

"Antonio," Esmeralda stopped him as she came out from the kitchen, "Your father and I have something to tell you first. Come and sit down."

"But Mom-"

"Don't speak like that to your mother. This is important. Now sit down," His father, Liam ordered.

Antonio walked towards the kitchen table and sat down in his usual chair and waited until his parents began to talk.

"Antonio," Esmerelda began, "I had a doctor's appointment today and I found out I'm pregnant. You're going to be a big brother."

Antonio's eyes shot up and he just stared at both of his parents in a state of disbelief, "But you're old."

"Antonio!" Esmerelda scolded.

"No I mean why now? Why not when I was younger. I don't want a baby sibling now. I won't have anything in common with them. And babies cry all night long!"

"Antonio how and why this happened now is none of your business. Now you don't have to like your younger sibling but I expect you to be civil and mature and help out."

"Do I have to?"

"Yes. A baby is a big responsibility and when he or she comes you're going to need to pick up a few extra chores."

"Fine but I'm not even looking at it," Antonio stood from his chair and walked out of the room and right back out the front door that he came in.

"So you hated Aunt Gabby at first?" Diego asked after his father had finished telling the story.

"Yes Diego I did. I was jealous and angry and it took me awhile to realize, like I said before how special she was."

"But what about using her to meet girls?"

"When my parents found out about that I wad grounded and not allowed to babysit Gabby anymore. At first I was relieved I didn't think it was a punishment but after awhile I realized how much I missed her smile and how excited she got when she saw me. So after I was done being grounded I helped out as much as I could and over time Gabby and I developed a relationship that goes beyond being siblings. I don't know what I would do without her; I love her so much she's my best friend and other then your mother the only person who knows everything about me."

"That's not going to happen with me," Diego assured him, "No way I'm I going to like one of the babies that much."

"We'll see bud," Antonio patted his knee, "Now cool off and do some homework and I'll call you when Aunt Gabby gets here."

"Okay," Diego stood off his bed and took the chair from his father and started to se up his desk with his homework assignments.

Making sure his son pulled out his homework and started it Antonio saw Laura walk out of Eva's room and made eye contact silently asking her to wait. Once he saw Diego starting his homework Antonio walked across the hall and towards his wife.

'So? How did it go with Eva?"

"Alright she was worried she have to do more to help out because its twins. She was worried she'd never get out of the house. I just told her that we wouldn't keep her against her will and accept for a few extra chores she wouldn't have to help out with the twins if she didn't want to. How'd it go with Diego?

"I told him how I wasn't thrilled with my parents having Gabby either but once she got a little older we became really close. I told him he had to respect them and us but also that it was okay to be upset about it as it is a big change."

"Sounds good," She said and as they got to the bottom of the stairs, "I'll go start dinner."

"Need any help?"

"Sure," She shrugged her shoulders as she turned to face him and then saw Gabby walk up the front steps, "Antonio, Gabby," She said and her husband turned around and opened the door for his sister and taking the car seats.

"Gabby," He finally saw her red and puffy face, "Gabby," He didn't hesitate to place both car seats on the floor and hug her allowing her to sob into his t-shirt.

After running out of tears Gabby lifted her head and opened her mouth, "He slipped into a coma. They said he has less then a fifty percent chance of recovering. And that's if he can't do half of the things he used to. I don't know what to do." She turned and looked at her brother and her sister in-law, "I don't know if things will ever be the same again."

"It'll be okay," Antonio pulled her into another hug as he shared a worrying glance with Laura and they both silently agreed to keep their news for another time.
