Chapter 19: First Day Battles
Lucy's P.O.V:
"For the first battle, give it up for Fairy Tail's Laxus Dreyar and Sabertooth's Rufus Lore-kabo!" Mato announced.
"Blondie vs. Blondie? Super," Jade muttered sarcastically.
"Quiet down Jade," Rina said, glancing over her shoulder to look at the dark brown-haired Mage.
She glared at Rina, but it was gone before I could even blink. Jade has a soft spot for younger people and doesn't act as harshly as she does to her elders. It's kind of funny how she changes her personality almost every minute.
By the time I turned back my attention to the arena, Laxus had stood at one corner of the landscape while Rufus stood across from him.
The air was heavy with suspense, though the crowd was yelling both the two male mages' names in excitement.
Laxus is a strong Mage, probably as strong as Gildarts and I'm pretty sure his power had increased over the past 3 years. I sensed his magical energy and I've got to admit, it's actually kind of overwhelming.
Emily seems to feel it too and we both shared a look.
If Laxus' magic power is twice as strong as it is now, Rufus is going to be dead by the end of the match.
My previously emotionless face is now wearing a frown and I felt my mood suddenly changing. I don't feel like being around the crowd anymore, just listening to their cheers makes me light-headed.
"I'm going to wander around for a while, I'll be back by the end of the day," I stated, walking over to the halls connected to the balcony.
"Don't exhaust yourself!" Emily warned and I simply nodded, even though I knew she couldn't see me.
I haven't got a clue where I was going, but I just let my feet lead me to wherever it wanted to go. My footsteps echoed throughout the place and it reminded me of the audience's cheers, so I sped up and took a sharp right turn.
"Lightning Eruption!" Someone, presumably Laxus, shouted and I could detect the heavy rumbling of the ground as I heard someone yell out. Maybe Rufus got hit by the attack.
"A hallucination?" Laxus asked.
"Memory-Make: A Night of Falling Stars!"
Alright, so maybe Rufus didn't get hit.
I finally reached another balcony where you could get a perfect view of the arena. There's no one there and I thought to myself. "This place would be quiet enough."
As I walked over, I watched as Laxus and Rufus battle each other out. Lightning bolts covered the S-class Mage's body, cackling and screeching, while Rufus smiled at his opponent. He's unusually calm and doesn't seem to care if he wins or whatnot.
"Lightning Dragon's Roar!" Laxus breathed in and a fury of thunder and lightning poured out of his mouth, heading straight for Rufus.
He dodged it and was about to attack but got hit by Laxus's Lightning Dragon's Breakdown Fist. Just a second later, he launched another attack that made Rufus fall to his knees upon contact.
"Lightning Dragon's Heavenward Halberd!"
"Winner: Laxus Dreyar!" Chapati Lola declared and once again, the air was filled with claps and whoops of the audience.
I've got to say, Rufus is strong and is included as one of the five members who made Sabertooth the strongest guild in Fiore for years on running before Fairy Tail took the title from them.
"No, come on Rufus!" A man's voice yelled and I turned around, only to be greeted by the sight of Sting Eucliffe. He's standing by the entrance of the balcony I was in and I immediately sighed.
Looks like it won't be peaceful enough around here.
"What are you doing here?" I whispered, but loud enough for Sting's dragon slayer hearing to pick it up.
"Sorry, I just saw you here and one thing led to another-"
"I get it," I interrupted him- something I do more often now that I've joined Angel's Gate. Guess it's just from hanging out with Jade too much.
"What about you? What are you doing here?" Sting asked.
"I just wanted to be alone," I mumbled.
"Well sorry for scaring you like that when I screamed," Sting apologized.
"I'm not scared," I answered in annoyance.
Don't get me wrong, Sting isn't that annoying really, it's just that he reminds me of Natsu too much. They're both hotheads, stubborn and competitive. If it's not for their different appearances and kinds of dragon slaying magic, I would have thought they were brothers.
"What's your name?"
"Do you have to ask so many questions?" I snapped. "You're getting on my nerves."
"Aw- that hurts," Sting grabbed his chest and pretended to have a sick, innocent look on his face.
"If I tell you my name, would you shut your mouth?" I sighed, not wanting to deal with him.
"Sure, sure. I'm Sting by the way."
"I know," I wanted to roll my eyes but resisted the urge to do so. "And I'm Yukihime."
"That name suits you," Sting commented. I wasn't sure if it's a compliment or not.
"Thanks."
"Second battle: Lumiere Dawns' Nicholas vs. Quatro Puppy's Warcry!"
I stared at Nicholas and inspected him closely. He has short, spiky chestnut hair and slanted orange eyes. In a way, he resembled Loke, except he doesn't wear any glasses and his features is less pronounced. I couldn't help but think that he's rather cute, like a mixture of Eve's innocence and Hibiki's confident looks.
Covering his body is a long-sleeve grey coat with the collar covering his neck and the front has three golden buttons. Along the bottom of it were two leather straps with white outlines and Nicholas also wear a pair of Italian polished shoes.
Why does every boy in this competition have to be dressed in some kind of unique outfit that matches their appearance?
"You like him don't you?" Sting said. So much for a little peace.
"No. And why do you care?" My face was emotionless as I stared him down. He visibly shrunk back and I swear I saw him shiver, and it's not because it's cold.
"N-Nevermind. Man, you're even scarier than Minerva, and you're not even glaring at me!"
"Do you want me to?" I growled, trying not to think of the ex-Sabertooth member that had beat me up at the GMG's Naval Battle.
"No!" Sting squeaked like a little scared mouse and became silent after that.
"You may begin-kabo!" Mato added.
Warcry started crying, waterfalls of tears welled up in his eyes and streamed down his cheeks. Of course he's just trying to use his tear magic, but it looks more like he's breaking down than getting ready to attack his opponent.
"Conceal," Nicholas muttered and disappeared.
"Wha?! Did that guy became invincible or something?" Sting babbled on as I gazed upon the battle in sudden interest.
"He uses Concealment Magic," I said to no one in particular. "You couldn't sense him nor could you smell him."
"Where are you?!" Warcry shouted and a sudden magical blast attacked him from behind.
Nicholas stood a few feet away, a spear twice his size in his hands. Two horn-like protrusions protruded from the sides of it, just below the spearhead that were separated into two metal edges that were curving inward. In the middle of the two is a small red lacrima shaped like a diamond.
"Wah!" Warcry cried out and fell to the ground, his hands and legs went limp right away and I sweat dropped.
"That was a fast battle-kabo. The winner is Nicholas Wendell from Lumiere Dawns!" Mato said.
3rd Battle: Mermaid Heel's Risley Law vs. Blue Pegasus' Eve Tearm
My eyes focused on Fairy Tail's balcony, for once not paying attention to the match and I continued to stare at the members.
Erza was talking to Juvia, who had a blank look on her face, Laxus leaned over the side of the balcony with Gray next to him. Gajeel'a back was facing me as he chattered with Laxus, probably asking to fight him. Natsu was nowhere in sight.
Where could he be? Maybe he left or went to vomit in the bathroom, but I knew that there's nothing to be sick about.
I gazed at the guilds, meeting Emily's eyes for a minute before we broke away.
I stopped what I was doing as I felt someone watching me. My sapphire-lavender eyes glance sideways and I was surprised to find Sting staring at me like I'm some kind of strange new species that he had discovered.
"What?" I nudged him in the shoulder and he immediately froze.
"Nothing- It's just that- Do you know you're kind of- You know what? Don't mind me, this is stupid."
"I want to know," I urged curiously.
"Fine," he sighed with a small smile forming on his face. "Do you know you're sort of beautiful?"
The old me would probably blush but I just blinked at him. Did he really just said that? How could he be so straightforward? Millions of unanswered questions entered my mind and I absentmindedly shook them off.
"Is that how you get girls to go out with you?" I asked, resting my arms on the concrete railing. It's clear I'm not taking him seriously and I probably never will.
How in the world am I suppose to imagine me being called beautiful by a guy I barely knew? At least he didn't call me an angel, that would probably make me embarrassed and we'll just have to suffer in silence until the end of the day. (Even though I'm hoping that we would)
"No- Well maybe, but this is different. I'm serious," Sting stated. His cheeks flushed a pale pink color and he looked embarrassed. I won't be surprised if he felt proud of himself for giving me a compliment that I don't even need.
I put a hand on my cheek, leaning in so I could lay my elbow on the railing.
"I don't know about that, there are many girls who are ten times more beautiful."
"You're very modest you know that?"
"We just met less than 15 minutes ago and you're judging my personality already?"
"It's the truth," Sting replied, scooting closer. I wanted to move away but I was already on the edge of the balcony.
I was about to open my mouth to reply but Mato beat me to it.
"Now everyone please welcome Lamia Scale's Chelia Blendy vs. Angel's Gate's Rina Farris!"
My head snapped back at the direction of the arena and I tentatively payed attention.
"Good luck Rin-chan!" Chisaki cheered and I mentally hoped that Rina would win the battle.
Normal P.O.V:
The two girls entered the arena, each of them taking slow but steady steps.
Both of them stopped at the same time, each of them staring each other down like old rivals.
Rina got ready, her arms looking frail and fragile against her sides. She was going to do her best and not let her guild down. She was determined to win.
"Ready... Set... Begin-kabo!" Mato exclaimed.
"By the time nature foretold, a blizzard of wind, a crystal rain and a water flood would engulf the darkness that lay upon it. For light couldn't be seen without the dark, and the dark couldn't be seen without the absolute light. Hailing the ultimate gates, open the magic of the moon- Dragon of Nature!" Rina chanted.
A familiar flurry of petals and green mist welled up around the 16 year old girl and the dragon, Lily appeared. Her wings were outstretched and the scales glittered like a thousand diamonds in the sunlight.
"A dragon?!" Most of the audience cried out, but the cries of the first and third generation dragon slayers were most prominent.
You could just hear them from a mile away while walking in a noisy, crowded and busy street.
"H-How is that possible?" Sting uttered in disbelief.
Lucy/Yukihime cross her arms with a significant smile on her face. Sting looked at her, his mouth threatening to open and just gap at the girl's radiant beauty. Her white hair streamed behind her as the breeze picked up.
"Rina's specialty is her dragon arts magic, she could summon any dragon at will and that's what makes her magic rare and extremely powerful. Not only that, the love she has for her dragons strengthen the bonds of all of them and that is the main reason why she's strong."
"Wah, a real dragon?!" Chelia commented, looking up at the magnificent creature, her eyes gleaming with surprise and excitement. She's very happy that she got to see a believed-to-be extinct creature standing before her, the thought made her jump and skip like a little kid in a candy store.
Lily, the dragon, sweat dropped at Chelia. "Rina, why did you summon me to fight a child?"
That made the Sky God Slayer froze, she slowly backed away, glaring at the dragon intensely. "I'm not a child! Sky God's Bellow!"
A spiraling whirlwind consisting of mostly black cloud-like materials swirled around and attempted to clash with Lily.
"Nature Dragon's Roar!" A stream of green and silver mist shot out of the dragon's mouth, colliding with Chelia's Bellow.
"Thank god I didn't wore a skirt," Lucy/Yukihime muttered as another breeze, but five times as strong, blew past the crowd and Sting blushed again at the thought. (What a pervert, no offense to Sting fans)
"I wouldn't mind that actually..."
Lucy didn't look at him as she punched him straight at the side of his head.
A vein popped out of her forehead while her eyebrows twitched in irritation. "Say that again and this will be the last battle you ever see."
"H-H-Hai!" Sting stuttered, collapsing on the floor. He was the current guild master of Sabertooth for god's sakes! How could he get beaten up by a girl?! (Again no offense to Sting fans)
Secretly he thought,"I shouldn't have said anything."
~29 minutes later~
Rina and Chelia panted. They were both moderately injured, though Chelia got more cuts than Rina. They've been battling for a while now and it turns out that both of them are equally strong. Chelia always healed the wounds she got when one of the dragon. Rina summoned attacked her but she doesn't have anymore energy to use her magic.
"1 more minute remaining-kabo," Mato warned.
Chelia run towards her opponent, attempting to knee her in the gut, but Rina dodged and punched Chelia's shoulder.
They continuously hurled at each other, sometimes rolling to the floor and at the end, both of them kicked each other and they collapsed.
Rina inhaled and exhaled and Chelia could only gasped for air. This fight had drained their magical energy and they were exhausted. Rina stood up soon after, having trained with her guild members almost every day and besides, she fought with Emily most of the time and everyone knows that she's a good teacher... In a way.
"10 seconds left-kabo!"
She got ready in an attack position as Chelia got up from the ground.
"5... 4... 3... 2... 1! Time's up-kabo!"
"Sorry about that," Chelia smiled, all suspense and fierceness gone in a flash.
"No problem," Rina replied, sticking her hand out for Chelia to take.
The two held hands and grinned at each other, not having a care in the world. In a way, they look like long lost best friends.
"A draw! Team Angel's Gate and Lamia Scale will receive 5 points respectively," Chapati Lola announced. "And that's the end of the first day, we hope we'll see you tomorrow!"
Lucy's P.O.V:
"That was faster than I thought. Time flies by when you have something to be interested in," I commented, helping Sting up.
He got up lazily, accidentally pulling me closer to him. We were chest to chest now and I swear my face is full of shock and surprise at the sudden movement. Sting's cheeks are officially red and I can't help but mentally giggle.
"Um, we should go back to our guilds," I said, pushing away and heading towards the halls.
"W-Wait for me!" Sting called out and ran to catch up to me. Here I say I've got no time for boys and I ended up getting stuck with the most cocky playboy in the whole of a Fiore... (Excluding Loke)
