Chapter 21

Dr. John Dee had returned to his downtown London office after the confrontation between Slytherin and Riddle had been properly orchestrated. He had worked outside the first day back, like he had before, but the unnatural fog was overwhelming. Even the dog seemed depressed. Most of his clients felt like they'd never be happy again. Dee found the whole thing very strange and had a gut feeling that it involved this new magic he had discovered.

Today though, he found himself huddled inside his office, with his desk boy sent home waiting for a call from his masters. He took a sip of coffee and turned the page in the book he was reading. The new heading read "Dementor." Then the phone rang.

Dee picked it up. It was an American named Al who was calling to discuss Dee's recent article about the possibility of linking computers together over great distances. Al wanted to call it "Interconnect." Dee thought that was a bad name, but he refrained from telling him what he thought. Al needed to get off the line so his masters could call. Dee hung up the phone.

The phone rang again. Dee picked it up again and heard the familiar voice (or voices) of his masters.

"You have done well," they said. "Salazar is pleased with you." Dee waited. They wouldn't have called to tell him that.

"Thank you," Dee said finally to break the silence.

"Riddle is very angry with you," they said. "He has vowed revenge."

"He will not find me," Dee said. "I have centuries of experience over him."

"He will find you," his masters said. "Because you will let him find you."

'What do you mean?" Dee asked.

"You will let Riddle find you," they reiterated. "And when he finds you, you will kill him once and for all."

"Understood masters," Dee got in before he heard them hang up. Dee placed the phone down and reclined. A grin began to appear on his lips. For the first time in two hundred years he was headed for a fight. This should be fun.

Lord Voldemort had dispatched his servants, or Death Eaters, to find Dr. John Dee. He would be dealing with him soon. But there was another problem to be dealt with first. He had assigned Regulus Black to follow Dee and determine if he could be trusted. And Black had vouched for him. Black would be punished.

Voldemort appeared on an unimportant side street called Grimmauld Place and faced the line of houses. He approached the one labeled Number 12 and pulled his wand. The door was magically locked but it didn't provide an obstacle to him. He walked inside.

The house was familiar to him, he had used it as a headquarters before. But that was when Black was trusted, perhaps his most trusted. Now, he had come to kill.

Movement surprised him from the end of the hallway but it proved to just be the house elf. Voldemort still sent a stunning spell at him and flung him crashing into the kitchen. A curtain pulled back next to him revealing a picture of an older lady.

"What racket is...oh," she said. "My Lord, what a pleasant surprise."

A surprised sound came from upstairs and soon footsteps were heard responding to the crash. The same woman from the picture soon appeared at the base of the stairs.

"My Lord," she said, wrapping a robe over herself. "What a pleasant surprise." Voldemort pointed his wand at her chest, which ended the pleasantries.

"Your son," he said.

"I do not know where he is," she said, her voice trembling. "He disappeared a couple weeks ago."

"Crucio!" Voldemort said. She writhed and shrieked in pain, but he released her after only a couple seconds. "Let's try this again. Where is your son?"

"I said I don't know!" she said, her voice breaking in and out as she tried to resettle after the attack. "You are the best Legimens, you know I'm not lying. Please."

Voldemort watched her cower in fear and could feel the truth in her words. "Look at me!" he screamed, and as soon as her eyes met his, he could see everything. He was standing in a bedroom with walls that looked very similar to these. He assumed it was in this house. The woman he had just cursed walked up to a desk and saw writing materials out and used. She reached into the trash and pulled out a piece of parchment. The heading was all she read, and thus all he knew, but it began "To the Dark Lord." She began to cry when a noise was heard down stairs. She burnt the page and began to head down.

"I believe you," Voldemort said, lowering his wand from her chest. Her shaking lessened. "But don't be too attached to your son. He has betrayed me and I intend to kill him and anyone who stands in my way. That includes you."

"If he has betrayed you, he is no son of mine," she said.

"I hope so," Voldemort said. He turned and swept out of the house before apparating away. He had a feeling that he'd figure out what happened with Black when he found Dee.

A/N:

I have used Voldemort's point of view before, and when I did, I referred to him as "Riddle." However, I have begun to refer to the character by whatever name the character I am would use. Thus when Dee is the point of view, he is called Riddle. When it is Snape or Lucius, he is called The Dark Lord. Regulus Black called him The Dark Lord until he decided to rebel, at which time he began to call him Voldemort. The second half of this chapter is from Voldemort's own point of view. I decided in writing this that he would not refer to himself as Tom Riddle because he despised the muggle name. He would refer to himself as Voldemort and thus that is the name used.

Also, note should be made of Regulus' story line. All sources I can find suggest that Regulus died in 1979, but I cannot find where Rowling would say that. They seem to be using the family tree in the movie (which Rowling had considerable power over). This story presents the death in fall, 1980. By the books, the death would only need to predate Voldemort's demise because Regulus clearly believes that Voldemort is still around when he writes the note Harry finds in the fake Horcrux. Much of what was presented fits the books description of what Regulus' last days were like, but the books are not very descriptive. We do know that Kreacher was used by Voldemort to test the Horcrux's defenses (I have him setting them up) and this presumably drove Kreacher mad. We do know that what Voldemort did to Kreacher was what pushed Regulus over the edge.

His mother never finds out what happened to him, but presumes him dead at Voldemort's hand. This fact inspired this chapter where Voldemort pledges to kill him. Had this happened, Black's mother would have given up hope. I wonder why she didn't disown him and burn him from the family tree when she assumed him dead at Voldy's hand, but she didn't.
