Really short, sorry.
Chapter 21- Sophie
Later that afternoon, the phone rang. Karlie was the first to pounce on the phone, giving Jason a good kick to the shins whilst battling for it. Jason fell to the ground mock-groaning in pain while Karlie grabbed the phone and brought it up to her ear, all the while poking her tongue out at Jason who just rolled his eyes back at her. Karlie snapped her attention back to the phone as the blur of words came out of the speaker.
"Mmhmm…yes. Monday? Okay. Thanks, bye. Yes, bye-bye." Karlie said into the speaker. I really wanted to know what was going on. "She got the job," said James's voice in my ear, causing me to jump slightly. He had been sitting on the other side of the room and I hadn't noticed him creeping up behind me. He's like a cat, I swear.
Throughout the week, we all applied for jobs at the same place, resulting in only Jason getting a job because of his 'career path.' James and I didn't get in because out 'career paths' weren't to do with animals or surgery. Bias, much.
Both Karlie and Jason started working on Monday, the start of the working week. James and I hung out around our smoke-filled motel and attempted to make strategies but only ended up watching America's Next Top Model on our crappy TV.
Just as the swimsuit section came on, I left to my shared room and, using my stir-crazy mind, drew up many detailed pictures. It was so boring without the two others here to make things interesting.
Knock, knock. I came to the front door where James had already arrived, and after checking through the crack in the door, I swung it open, revealing our two friends. Karlie was exhausted, her hair a birds nest, and Jason was looking thoroughly ruffled and was limping.
"So. How was your day?" James asked, knowing he wasn't going to get a good answer.
Karlie said 'meh,' shoved past us and collapsed on the couch, whereas Jason gave a straight answer.
"It's not nice having to clean up after mutant surgeries." Jason lifted his jacket to reveal patches of blood (clearly not his) on his scrubs, then stalked off to the shower.
I walked into the living room and plopped down next to Karlie's head, where she lay, out like a light.
A couple of weeks later, James and I got call backs for the job. It was weird though, because Karlie and Jason got them ages ago. Back to the present, though.
"Yes. I-uh, I suppose so. Thanks. Tomorrow? Sure," I said into the receiver. A minute later, James was called and we found out we didn't exactly get the jobs. We were both called back to be subjects. To become experiments again.
