Chapter Twenty-One
Officer Jenkins? The same officer Jenkins that was upstairs in my room at my parents' house with Mark and myself?!
Ella slowly started to fall into a state of shock and confusion. She never once assumed that one of the men at her parents' home that was supposed to be finding out who invaded it and murdered them was the very person who had committed the horrible crime. The fact that an officer had been responsible for the death of her parents made her even more fearful.
Suddenly, her ears picked up on the sound of Mark and Jenkins falling to the ground outside of the bathroom that she had agreed to stay in, and not to leave. She jerked from the sudden sounds echoing to her ears from where she was nestled on the other side of the door. Her hands clung to the dress she had chosen to wear that night to dinner with Mark out of a growing feeling to assist her fiancée. She focused her eyes in the direction of it, and tightened up all over with a need to go to him. Slowly, Ella started to take a step towards the door with one of her hands stretched out in the direction of the door knob.
Don't you even dare, Ella. Her rational side said, demanding Ella to not do what she planned on doing. You have to remain in here away from what is going on out there at the moment.
I can't stand by, and do nothing! Ella exclaimed, shouting at her conscience for suggesting her to do what she was told to do by Mark, and not to interfere. Her hand was frozen within a few inches away from the door knob, remaining stuck in no man's land. Mark is now my fiancée, and I have to do what is necessary to keep him safe and sound! I can't stay here, and not assist him like I need to!
Mark can take care of himself, Ella. He is a top detective for god's sake! You need to stay in here where it is safe and sound.
If I don't do something, I run a risk of losing the one man that I love with all of my heart, and be taken away by the very person who took the life of my mom and dad!
Ella-
Ella nothing! I know what I must do, and I have to do it whether you like it or not!
Ella was positive on what she needed to do. She had to put her own safety and life on the brink if she was to keep anything from happening to her fiancée.
Retracting her hand, she moved her shoes from her feet, and moved herself up to the door. Her body moved to be down on the balls of her kneecaps as an attempt to keep her movements quiet, and to the point where Jenkins would not be aware of what she was doing at the moment. Grasping onto the door knob, Ella twisted it over in a direction, and, silently, opened up the door enough to peer outside into his bedroom. Her eyes placed themselves in the direction of where the foot of his bed was before she focused her gaze over towards the other side of the bed that was near the threshold to his bedchamber.
On the ground near the doorway to Mark's room, Mark was struggling to get the upper hand in a hand to hand fight with Jenkins who was on top of him. He had blood trickling down from the right corner of his forehead and his bottom lip due to the fight that he was caught up in. His fists desperately punched at Jenkins's head as hard as he could manage several times before he found Jenkins hitting at him with the knuckles of his right hand, quick and hard.
Oh my…I have to do something…and fast.
The sight of her fiancée's current state made it very aware that she had to do something if she was to have a future with him past that night. Another moment of waiting to do something to assist him could result in her losing him, and having to face her potential abductor all on her own.
Moving her eyes to a spot close to her, Ella discovered Mark's silver magnum to be on the floor nearby. She managed to get a hold of the gun in her right hand despite trembling out of the fear that she was under at the moment. Her eyes looked it over for a few quick moments before they darted back in the direction of where the fight was taking place close by in time to see Jenkins straightening up with his body straddled on top of a now weakened Mark.
Reaching behind his back, Jenkins reached down inside of the back of his pants, and pulled out a pistol that he had been hiding all along, and brought it clearly into sight for both Mark and Ella to see before he started to check the ammo to make sure it was full of bullets.
Son of a bitch…He had another gun all along while Mark doesn't have his! There is no chance left for me to waste! It is now…or never.
The discovery of Jenkins pulling out a gun alerted her to the very core of her being. She had no time to waste. Mark's life now hung in the balance, and she was the only one to keep him safe.
Moving to her feet, Ella walked out of the bathroom, and towards where Mark was on the ground with Jenkins on top of his body. She was careful to take slow, silent steps across the hardwood to not make as much noise as she would if she just ran up. Her gaze narrowed in on the back of the head of the man that was trying to take the life of the only person that she would ever love and agree to marry.
"I am glad that you chose to put up a good fight, Mark," Jenkins said, bringing his gun to where he could look upon it, and realize what he planned to do next. His hand pulled back the trigger on it while he continued to speak to him in a more threatening, coy tone. "But I have to bring our playtime to an end."
The only thing that is going to end…is your torment and torture of Mark, and any chance of you murdering another family to get what you want, you son of a bitch!
The rage that burned deep inside of her body caused her to tremble all over as she approached Jenkins from behind. This man…no…This monster had stolen her life from her. He had taken the lives of her parents, and was now attempting to take the life of her fiancée with her not far away. There was no way that she was going to let him get away with this, and do something much worse to herself.
She moved the gun in her hand to where the butt of it faced his direction. Ella's eyes started to water up due to the intense emotions she was suffering from at the moment as she pulled the magnum up above the head of the man who had murdered her mom and dad, and was attempting to take the life of her fiancée. Fighting against crying out like she wanted to, her eyes burned with pure, unadulterated hatred for the person she was looking up.
Give me strength, mom and dad.
"I just have two words for you Mark-"
"Good night!" Ella screamed out in anger moments before she brought the gun down, and hit Jenkins in a corner of his forehead with the handle of the magnum as hard as she could manage. "Sweet dreams…You sick bastard…"
Her eyes watched Jenkins fall off of Mark's body, and roll to the ground before coming to a stop at the foot of his large bed. With her body trembling from the intense anger that had a grip on her for a few moments, she noticed Jenkins to be out cold with blood coming down his forehead before her eyes moved over in the direction of where Mark was.
Moving his feet, Mark held himself with one of his arms for a brief moment before he dropped it. His eyes focused on Ella standing nearby with his gun still in her hand as his mouth proceeded to form some words with a faint sign of blood still visible upon his bottom lip.
"You sure are a fiery one, Ella." Mark said, attempting to make light of the situation. "I will have to make sure I don't make you mad at me anytime soon."
The sight of him being okay and still alive caused her tears to flow from her eyes. Unable to form any words, she tossed the gun onto his bed, and wrapped her arms around him, clinging to him. She buried her face into the fabric of his purple shirt, and sobbed against it, happy that he was still alive and not dead.
"It's going to be okay, Ella. We are safe now. He won't ever hurt us again."
Ella glanced down at the unconscious form of Jenkins on the ground, confirming what she believed to be true from Mark. Jenkins would never hurt them again, and that he would soon be locked up for a very long time. Feeling Mark's strong arms moving around her body, she closed her eyes, and clung to him, tighter, while her engagement ring glistened in the lights of the room that were burning brightly.
