Chapter 21
Caroline had honestly thought that not having to deal with Klaus' attention would be a blessing however it was anything but that. It was total misery and torture. It had been a week since Klaus had practically kicked her out of his house sparing Damon and Stefan's life. Not having Klaus around was a total agony. She always looked towards the window, while she was doing her homework, waiting for him to make an appearance so she could roll her eyes or scowl or ignore him but he was never there anymore. Every minute stretched so far. She hadn't feel any guilt when she had said those things to Klaus but when he replied her back, his words cut deep like a slow but sharp knife shredding everything in its path.
She was so lost in her thoughts she didn't notice the older Salvatore snapping his fingers in front of her to get her attention.
"Blondie. Have you been listening to anything I said at all?" Damon asked sarcastically.
Caroline snapped out the train of her thoughts and looked towards Damon. She shook her head, "Yeah I have. Elena didn't need to feel guilty about all the originals dying. Elijah deserves to die for all he's done to Elena. Kol is an untamed maniac, Rebekah's hot but a bitch, Klaus is dangerous and wants to make Elena his blood bag donor and Finn is just boring" She answered back exactly quoting the infamous Damon Salvatore. Her breath almost hitched at the mention of Klaus. She didn't want rumors to spread about her and Klaus because there was no 'Klaus and her' so she excused herself from Damon and practically went into social isolation.
Ester had tried to kill all the originals but Damon turned Abby to sever the connection and save Elena after she had been kidnapped by the originals. No one would talk to Damon especially not Bonnie, Elena and Jeremy so Caroline spent most of her time either helping Abby or helping Damon with his feelings so he didn't go kill anyone or helping Stefan with his control issues. She also kept calling Tyler, leaving him voicemails but never got a reply. She tried keeping herself busy to avoid thoughts about a certain original but it was practically impossible. Even cheerleading couldn't divert her thoughts from Klaus. She wasn't even sure why she was suddenly missing his presence.
She even thought of calling him once or twice but she completely abandoned those thoughts after they all killed his brother Finn with one of the white oak stakes. Now Damon was on his trip to Denver to visit Jeremy with Elena to ask him to contact Rose. Stefan was on Alaric-alter-ego babysitting duty with Rebekah.
And here she was laying on the floor of the Lockwood cellar wrapped up in the arms of the boy she loved. Tyler. He just decided to pop by and Caroline couldn't have asked for a better time for him to come. She was all alone and lost. She didn't know what to do in her life anymore. She lived on trivial tasks like planning the decade dance and stuff but Rebekah had conveniently taken over the dance committee from Caroline, or at least the decade dance, so she didn't know what to do anymore. Her friends and enemies, both seemed too busy for her.
"Tyler, I have to tell you something." She said suddenly unlinking her body from Tyler's. When he nodded, she took it as cue to continue, "Matt killed an original and when he died, all the vampires from his bloodline died mysteriously. Right now Damon is gone to figure out from which bloodline we belong and if it's not from Klaus then we're… he's going to kill him" Caroline choked out.
Tyler inhaled lazily and shook his head, "But if Klaus dies, I die…" he said and mumbled on.
"I know that… they know that. Difference is Damon doesn't care" she said sadly and looked over to her boyfriend who was already worrying for his life when he hadn't even enjoyed the perks of his immortal life.
Klaus was angry was an understatement. His brother was dead. Finn was dead. Not daggered but permanently gone. Because of this Mystic Scooby gang. He was furious. How dare they even think to attack his brother? Had they forgotten who he was? He was Klaus Mikaelson and his leniency towards them had been his greatest regret. They had exploited him far too many times. And they would pay. Eventually. He was just waiting for the right moment to strike. All of them would pay. Rebekah for partying with the enemies. Stefan, his friend, for backstabbing him repeatedly. Tyler, his first hybrid, for breaking the sire bond. Of course he knew Tyler had left and when he asked one of his other hybrids to track him down, he was turning repeatedly to break the sire bond. So much for loyalty. Damon Salvatore for killing his brother and using his baby sister. That human quarterback for stabbing his big brother to his death and Caroline Forbes for being too much of a tease.
She had taunted him for way too long and now he had reached his limit. He could no longer tolerate anymore of her attitude. He thought once or twice to go over to her house, fuck her right there and then kill her to be done with it. But then he thought killing her would give her far more peace than she deserved. No he'd let her live, knowing that she'd always have to stay by his side.
He would take his doppelganger, his girl and his sister and leave town like he originally planned. His parents were finally dead and there was no other way to kill him now. He was truly immortal now.
After a lot of thinking and careful planning Klaus found himself dressed in a white suit at the dreadful high school 20s decade dance. He entered the room to find students packed in one hall, dancing to the music of the 20s. Oh it was a sweet road down memory lane. He had some of the best times in the 20s when his friend was carefree and embraced his true nature. He wondered if Stefan could go back to the ripper state and be his friend again. He shook away his thoughts and looked around for his first targets for the night. Tyler and Caroline. He couldn't find them. Obviously they couldn't be far because he had at least a dozen hybrids roaming around the school perimeters, to block any possible escape before his plans were finished.
He spotted Elena and Stefan dancing happily in the corner with the Bennett witch and some other petty human boy. Much to his surprise, he also found Rebekah on the other side of the hall, dancing with none other than Damon Salvatore. Oh his baby sister could get desperate. Something he'd rectify tonight. Very clearly.
Just when he was about to give up and have his hybrids search for the young couple, he spotted them together in the middle of the room grabbing the attention of every teenager present. He smirked and made his way to them but his smirk vanished when he saw how close they were. Caroline was dancing with him, kissing him occasionally. That mutt's hands were all over her. He could only imagine the fun in ripping his arms off.
He walked closer to them and clearly felt them stiffen when they recognized his presence. He could now clearly see his beauty. She was wearing a red, thigh length dress, pearls hanging in her neck. Much like a classic flapper of the 20s. The dress exposed much of her creamy, porcelain skin and he liked it.
As if she could sense his thoughts, Caroline felt a shiver travel down her spine the way he was gazing at her. She could swear she was not getting a positive vibe about how this evening was going to proceed. But she decided to ignore that little detail and squeezed Tyler's shoulder reassuringly.
"Where have you been mate?" Klaus asked directing his eyes towards his hybrid. Tyler was Klaus' first successful hybrid. Shame to kill him. Alas he had no other option.
Tyler gulped slighted and Klaus could practically smell the fear off of him. "I just got back in town" he replied in a low tone. So he was going to play as if he was still sired. 'Okay two can play this game' Klaus thought to himself.
"That's funny I don't recall giving you permission to leave in the first place" Klaus teased in a playful manner. He took a few steps forwards and pointed towards Caroline. "You don't mind if I cut in. Do you?" he asked and smiled moving towards Caroline.
"Yes" she spoke too quickly not making one move towards him. "Actually we do" she stated and passed him a fake smile. Klaus smirked. She was always so fearless and bold. He would never get bored in her company. Ever.
Klaus directed his glare towards Tyler, testing if he'd still lie about the sire bond. He did. "No. It's fine" Tyler said looking towards Caroline apologetically and moving behind. Caroline nodded slightly and pressed her lips together, taking a few steps towards Klaus angrily. "Why do you always have to prove you're the alpha male?" She questioned angrily.
Klaus fake frowned in return, "I don't have to prove anything love." He declared. "I am the alpha male" he continued glancing towards Tyler to deliver his message.
Caroline scoffed in return and shook her head. Klaus just smiled and held his hand out. "Come on. One dance" he said raising his eyebrows. "I won't bite" he promised.
Caroline knew there was no use in fighting and creating a scene so she, scornfully, placed her hand into his, as he lead the way right into the middle of the dance floor. She placed one of her hands on his shoulder and the other in his hand while his other hand was tightly wrapped around her waist. His grip was almost bruising. It was like he was claiming her or something.
"You would've loved the 1920s Caroline. Girls were reckless, sexy, fun." He said and twirled her forcefully. "They literally used to dance until they'd drop." He added chirpily.
Caroline rolled her eyes, "I don't suppose that ever happen to their dance partners" she commented sarcastically trying to move away from him but with the grip he had on her he was grinding his body against hers.
His expression turned serious. Dead serious. "You should be nicer to me. After all I am the only one who truly cares for you." he said with a playful smile and looked towards Tyler who was listening in on each and every word.
Her eyes narrowed and she stopped moving with the beat of the music but he didn't stop so she had no choice but to dance along him, "There are a lot of people who care for me and you are not one of them" she hissed. Her voice venomous and bitter.
"Ah! Yes Elena and Stefan who didn't do anything to protect you from Damon. The Bennett witch who could've killed Damon with a flick of her wrist. Or perhaps Tyler who left you." he played along with fake concern and looked straight into her eyes. "Admit it Caroline. I am the only one who truly cares for you and your needs" He said glancing to his hybrid and who was fuming in rage and had clenched his fists tightly.
Caroline narrowed her eyes at Klaus. This all felt like déjà vu. Klaus had manipulated them all once before too using these tactics. She wasn't sure she could believe him or not. She wasn't allowed to question him anymore when she saw Stefan rushing over to her.
"Caroline!" he called out from a little distance. "It's your mother. Elena found her in the classroom. You guys need to come with me" he said to both of them and practically dragged them with him.
The blonde vampire glanced just once behind and passed a questionable look to Klaus who stood there smiling at her.
Stefan, Caroline and Tyler rushed to the classroom immediately where they saw Elena sitting on the chair next to Sheriff Forbes and Damon looking out of the window.
As soon as the three of them entered, they caught everyone's attention. Caroline rushed to her mother and hugged her. But what shocked her was that her mother didn't hug her back instead she just pushed her away from.
Elena placed a hand on her friend's shoulder and squeezed it almost… sympathetically? Caroline looked at her mother and then at Elena questioningly. "What's going on?" Caroline asked.
The brunette human just looked away while her mother looked at her like she didn't recognize her own daughter. It was Rebekah who broke the silence.
"Did you call me here to witness this mother-daughter bonding Damon? Because I didn't expect this when Matt told me called me." Rebekah exhaled dramatically from the door.
"What does this have to do with my mother?" Caroline asked getting to her feet, standing straight facing Stefan.
Stefan looked to Damon and gulped. "You mother's memories are erased. She doesn't remember anyone here" he exhaled somewhat sensitively.
Caroline was not sure if she was going mad or did she just hear Stefan say that someone erased her mother's memories. Her lips parted as if to say something but she shut them again looking desperately towards Damon or Stefan to fix this. To say that this was all a lie or some sort of sick joke or anything but the truth.
Stefan ran a hand through his hair. "Rebekah, you can reverse this compulsion can't you?" Elena asked looking towards her friend who was standing in the room miserably with not one clue of what to do. Liz was all Caroline had and she still wasn't over her dad's loss. It would break Caroline completely if her mother would just forget who she was.
Rebekah pouted at the request coming from the doppelganger she despised and turned her head away. It was Elena who pleaded to her again. "Look I know you don't like me. You probably hate me but please. This isn't for me. Caroline didn't ever do anything against you. Please Rebekah" Elena beseeched a few tears escaping her eyes looking at her friend who had lost all sense.
"If you can do something do it!" Damon growled finally turning towards Rebekah with a murderous glare. He was friends with Liz and he'd be damned if he let anything happen to her or her daughter anymore. The elder Salvatore's growl even startled Rebekah, although she was an original but, she was still a little shaken up.
"I can do it but I'm not doing it for you. I'm only doing it out of the goodness of my heart." She jutted out her chin and went over to Liz who was looking at them as if they were all crazy when Caroline cut her off. "She's on vervain. She can't be compelled" she stated.
"No she's not. I'm surprised you all can't tell. I can practically smell her blood from here." Rebekah answered back. These vampires were an embarrassment to the whole vampire community. They had senses as cloudy as humans. She could forgive Caroline or Tyler but the Salvatores had no excuse for being so dull.
"I'll go get Bonnie. She may be able to help" Stefan said and walked out of the room. Damon ran a hand through his hair and shuffled it roughly.
"So someone shuffled her vervain with fake stuff only to compel her memories away?" He proposed to the group but mainly looking towards Caroline while Rebekah compelled her mother. "Any vampires you or mommy pissed off lately Barbie?" he asked sarcastically.
"No. I mean I didn't. The only vampires I know are of Mystic Falls. It's not like I'm as old as you to travel throughout the world and make vampire buddies." Caroline mumbled back. Her voice dripping with sarcasm and mockery. She couldn't help but stare at her mother who was just a shell of a person looking dull and dazed.
"This is weird. She can't be compelled back. Either it's a medical reason or she's been compelled by a vampire older than me and that's not possible because the only vampires older than me are…" Rebekah started off but stopped when she realized who was behind this or at least could be and most likely would be.
"Klaus" Damon cursed under his breath. His obsession with Blondie was going to a whole new level and why would he come after her mother now.
"We should get out of here. Somewhere we're all safe. My house" Elena suggested practically shaking with fear. Klaus could come here any moment and repeat his ball revenge fantasies. They all needed to leave and they needed to get out of there soon.
"We can't get out. My brother's pet hybrids are surrounding the whole school" Rebekah commented sardonically and walked towards the door. "Too bad you're not an original who cannot be killed by a werewolf bite" Rebekah commented and smirked while opening the door. Her face went from smirk to frown in a moment when she saw Stefan. His clothes were blooded and his neck had a terrible bite on it. Hybrid bite. She was sure of it.
"Look at me Care." Tyler said cupping Caroline's face in his hands. He had been observing everything silently the whole moment but now he had enough and wasn't about to let Klaus do anything to Caroline. At least he'd get her a chance to run. "Promise me if you get a chance to leave, you'll run and you won't look back." He stated and when she was about to protest he kissed her quickly on her lips and then on her forehead.
"I need to know you'll be safe Caroline. If you get even the slightest chance. I want you to run. I'll take care of the rest. Okay?" he asked worriedly. When she nodded, he embraced her again thinking of millions of things Klaus would do to them.
Elena rushed to Stefan who closed the door behind him and staggered inside to find Caroline and Tyler embracing each other and Rebekah standing next to him with a frown on her face. He ignored both of the girls and went to Damon.
"We need to get the girls out of here. Klaus is coming." Stefan choked out worriedly. While looking for Bonnie, he had overheard Klaus' hybrids talking about Klaus taking 'his girls' back from the Salvatores. He could only imagine Elena and Caroline being his girls. They needed to act fast or else everything would be ruined. While he was thinking of Klaus, one of his hybrids spotted him and bit him right before Stefan fought him off and tore his heart out.
"He bit you?" Damon hissed. As if they didn't have enough trouble, now they needed Klaus' blood to save Stefan. He wondered how they were gonna get the cure for the bite now when they'd be taking the people, Klaus wanted, away.
"I'm taking Caroline out of here. I can get through the hybrids." Tyler spoke up grabbing Caroline's hand into his own. "I'm one of them." To them at least he thought to himself. Klaus still didn't know he was un-sired so he could get Caroline out of this mess and run away with her until Klaus' obsession went away.
"We can't just leave. What about my mom, Elena and Stefan?" Caroline argued. "He's been bitten Tyler!" she focused to get her point across.
"Klaus won't let him die. He considers Stefan a friend. He'll heal him and I'll get your mom and Elena after I take you. You're my main concern right now Caroline" Tyler said and before she could argue anymore he flashed them both out of the room into a dark hallway to sneak them out easily.
"The hybrids won't be guarding this exit. No one knows this way" He whispered to Caroline and she nodded back following him.
"I wouldn't be so quick in making such claims mate" came a reply from the other end towards where they were heading. That voice was all too familiar. It belonged to the man responsible for all this chaos and mess.
Caroline froze, not sure what to do. She couldn't run. It would be useless but she was in no position to face him either. As if Tyler read her thoughts, he stood in front of her protectively faced Klaus himself.
"I'm not letting you hurt Caroline" Tyler declared and Caroline was so sure Klaus would come and snap his neck or something. She grasped his arm so tightly if he hadn't been a hybrid, his bone would've broken into two pieces.
To everyone's surprise, Klaus laughed. "Please tell me what your plan was? Whoosh her out of here when all the hybrids know you're a traitor and clearly unsired?" He questioned knowingly. Caroline and Tyler were both caught like deers in front of headlights. How did Klaus find out Tyler was not sired anymore?
"Did you honestly think I wouldn't find out that you broke the sire bond? I think you've forgotten who I am" He hissed spitefully.
"Why did you compel my mother? She had no part in anything!" Caroline asked suddenly coming to stand beside a stunned Tyler holding his hand.
Klaus squared his jaw at the sight of Caroline holding Tyler's hand and tried to calm himself and failed miserably. When he couldn't control himself, he flashed in front of Tyler and stuck his hand into his chest clenching his heart in his fist.
Tyler screamed in pain but stood still fearing any movement would lead to his heart being ripped out. Caroline gasped shocked of Klaus' actions. She had approximately ten seconds before Klaus would kill Tyler.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Caroline yelled leaving Tyler's hand and bringing her hands up to rip her own hair out. "STOP IT! You're going to kill him" She protested again.
Klaus smirked, "That is the intention love." He said. "Although I will allow Tyler to live if you come with me and do as I say." He offered and squeezed the mutt's heart tighter earning a gut wrenching scream from him. "I need an answer Caroline" Klaus commented bored.
"Okay. I will go with you" she said and when he removed his hand from Tyler's chest, Tyler fell to the floor. As soon as Caroline was about to rush to Tyler, Klaus stepped into her way and shook his head 'no'.
