IMMORTAL DEATH
CHAPTER 20
- The Change -
His body ached. His mind ached. Everything ached and after a while he had thought that nothing would be comfortable ever again. The ache was something foreign to him, since it was everywhere. Everywhere he looked, everywhere he thought. No matter which way everything felt so dreading that he could just collapse on the ground without a care.
It seemed so good an option compared to the other one: continuing forward. But he couldn't do that. Because if he had done that than everything he had ever done, everything Itachi had done, would be in vain. He would have betrayed not only himself but also Itachi, Naruto and everyone else he knew. And especially Sakura. Giving up would have meant giving the power to Obito. That would have been destructive.
But the small spot of hope was always there. It was always there to nag him like no other to not to give up. There was no giving up it said many times, even though he wanted to believe otherwise. You could say it hurt even his ears. The nagging was so annoying and it made him annoyed beyond limits. So how could he give up? It would have meant that no matter where he goes the voice would be there to bag him how he had failed. Failing was something he hated. Has always hated.
The funny thing was that the voice sound a little like Sakura's. Her voice - everything he heard it - sounded like the most melodic sound in the universe. The most beautiful thing in his opinion. And if he was to cite Naruto: the grape of the eternal tree of love. That's how the blond described the sound when Hinata giggles, especially if he is the cause of the toddlers happiness.
How could he have given up if the voice was Sakura's?
There was no giving up. He didn't want to give up Sakura because letting everything go and allowing the aches to take over would have meant just that. And he had just found her. It wasn't fair for him and for her. The effort Itachi had put in taking care of her. Even though causing her back problems. But that was only a minor side effect which was easily fixed now that she was turning into one of them.
Sasuke would be lying if he said that he wasn't afraid. Of course, he was scared. He has seen people of because of the transformation too many time to even count. He has seen the pain of the loved ones when told that he or she passed away and couldn't handle the change like they had. It's a heartbreaking sight. Definitely not something one would like to see, nevertheless, experience.
Sasuke didn't want that. He didn't want to see how life left Sakura's body making her stop breathing and moving completely. Making her die. That would be final and there was no coming back.
The aches he has been feeling since the day Sakura was taken has been increasing until this day. It was like the aches changed into fear. The power of the aches and pains couldn't compete with the strength of his fear. He feared for her life. Everything could go wrong in the matter of seconds. But as the time went by and Sakura was still alive, the fear started to disappear and turn into hope.
He hadn't felt this hopeful since a long time because every passing minute only meant that Sakura was going to survive. The fact that she was going to make it made him at ease. Making him finally able to fall asleep. Next to her. It was the calmest place he could have ever imagined himself to be: laying next to Sakura. He could fee her pain, not like her, but still he could feel that she was in pain. Luckily she was unconscious. Otherwise she would be probably trashing everywhere screaming for help and the only thing he could do would be to try to calm her down and watch.
The occasional moving of her eyes under her eyelids told him that she was still there with him and not leaving him. The small movements of her finger, hands and legs and occasional movement of her body told the same story. He was hopeful.
He's body felt relaxed while laying next to her. His hand in hers, holding it carefully and feeling her heartbeat slow down. Even in sleep he could feel her body temperature drop and the pulse on her fingertips slow down. It was odd to be honest. Never has he been this close to a dying body. Well, Sakura wasn't literally dying but still the symptoms were the same.
He wasn't sure where in between sleep and consciousness he was when he heard the loud crash. His senses told him immediately that it came from inside the room and the first thing in his mind was to protect Sakura, who wasn't able to do so herself. So before he had even opened his eyes properly he was already up crouching on the bed and taking in his surroundings. He was ready to get rid of anyone that dared to come in.
Nothing was out of place in the room but when he turned around to his left to see that Sakura was okay - she wasn't there. That was when he took a notice of the broken floor length mirror that was next to a wall and a moving body underneath the remains of glass and wood.
Sakura was laying face down on the floor trying to get up. Sasuke's instincts calmed down immediately as it dawned to him that it had actually been Sakura, who had moved and caused the loud crash. Like him she wasn't used to the way her body moved. It was so different because everything was different. Her hearing and taste would be much better and her feeling of touch.
His whole body began relaxing since there was no real danger and this was a good sign; she was moving, which meant that she was alive. But all of his protective walls came right back up when he heard the loud footsteps in the corridor outside the room. His skin crawled at the thought of someone invading their private place and try to take Sakura away. His fingers flexed in anticipation of being able to rip someone's head off.
His body turned towards the door just as Naruto launched himself inside with worried look marring his normally happy face. But Sasuke didn't care about that. He had invaded his territory.
"Is everyone o-" he stopped mid-sentence as he took in Sasuke's position and aura that was clearly telling him to fuck off or I'm gonna kill ya. Naruto hadn't even taken a one step back before someone had grabbed his shirt and pulled him back in the corridor where a group of people were looking worried as he had when he had ran into the room giving Hinata to Ino.
The door was slammed closed by Neji, who sighed in relief that the younger Uchiha hadn't attacked anyone. Itachi was holding Naruto's shirt with Kakashi, whom both had relieved looks on their face. Naruto's face was one of fear. He hadn't seen his best friend look like that ever. It was like a hungry wolf guarding his meal. But soon his face muscles relaxed and a goofy smile took the place of fear. He could never be angry at Sasuke for he was only protecting Sakura, and that's exactly what he would have done in the same situation.
Ino walked closer to the four vampires and glared at Naruto, "Are you out of-"
"Let's take this downstairs." Itachi interrupted her before she could continue. He had a small hunch that the crash wasn't something life threatening and Sasuke's reaction plus the condition of them room supported the fact. But never had he thought that Naruto would just barge in to the room like that. Not even him would have just crashed in as if nothing was wrong since he was aware of his brother's abilities and nature.
And the fact that Sasuke didn't want any extra males around Sakura only made his belief stronger that his brother would be overprotective of the pink haired newborn vampire. He wasn't going to taunt him for it for he was the same with his mate. Even if Kakashi was around her he couldn't help but feel jealous and annoyed of the idea that she had to share her attention when he wanted it solely on him.
With Kakashi and Itachi moving everyone forward in the hallway Naruto crossed his arms over his chest with a pout on his face.
"I wanted to see what she looks like."
"She looks just the same." Kakshi sighed and gave a small push on Naruto's back to make him move faster.
Sasuke was already next to Sakura as he saw Neji pulling the door closed and Kakashi and Itachi pulling Naruto out of the room. She wasn't moving when he had turned his attention back to her which caused his chest to tighten. He needed to get to her. His body craved to be next to her like he had, not too long ago, before she had accidentally thrown herself out of the bed.
A wave of relief filled him when he finally reached her.
Gently he placed his hands on her back and shoulder so that he would avoid overwhelming her.
"Sakura," his voice was quiet.
She exhaled heavily and her body began trembling.
"Come on, let's get you back on the bed." With careful hands Sasuke helped Sakura up. It wasn't a hard task since she wasn't heavy and she even helped him a little by putting some weight on her legs. Still her head hung low as if ashamed or in pain.
Sasuke helped her to sat down on the edge of the bed. He crouched in front of her, holding her hands in his. Her whole body continued trembling and she continued to breathe with heavy in and exhales. Finally she was able to get some control of her body and fist her fingers in Sasuke's.
His heart hurt to see her so nervous and disorientated. He would be lying if he was to say that he didn't regret changing her. From now one her life would be full of blood lust and trying to control it. It was a paining sight. If he could he would take away her need for blood and even drink the blood himself he must but he can't do that. No one or nothing can replace the need of blood. It is what keeps their almost dead bodies alive.
"Sakura," Sasuke whispered her name so quietly and placed his hand to her neck - where there was no pulse, "look at me." With the help of his thumb he raised her face and his breath was caught in his throat.
Sakura's eyes were wide from fear and confusion. He knew the feeling so well. He had been in that exact same position. The burning feeling in his throat and every sense on high as if he had taken some drug, except the feeling would never go away. But what got his attention was the small mark on Sakura's otherwise beautiful face.
Nothing except that had changed: her heart-shaped face and big emerald eyes were there. And her rosy lips and long eyelashes. But now all of that was accompanied by the small grey-ish mark on her forehead.
He couldn't hide the look of confusion on his face and Sakura noticed that, too. A look of panic came over her.
"What-"
"Nothing." Sasuke stopped her and quickly made his stoic face return. He didn't want to scare Sakura and as if telling her that there was a small mark on her forehead wasn't going to freak her out. She already needed to get used to just being.
Sakura's eyes calmed down and her hand went for her throat.
"I know." Sasuke said while standing up to go to the bag on the table in the corner of the room. Itachi had brought a bag of donated blood earlier when Sakura and Sasuke had still been asleep. With his heightened senses it was no task at all for Sasuke to smell the define scent of blood coming from the bag unlike Sakura, who was taking everything and wasn't yet able to distinguish the scent from everything. All the smells were coming to her as a big ball of odor, but in due time she would be be able to notice everything.
As he pulled one plastic bad out of the bag, Sakura's movements became more restless. He couldn't help but smirk. Her reaction to blood was immediate which was good and expected. Everything was going good so far if you forget the mark on her head.
Sakura was already on her knees on the bed looking in his direction, especially at the red bag in his hands. She licked her lips and followed carefully every movement Sasuke made towards her. She was in a trance.
Her whole mind was filled with blood and wanting it but as the sweet metallic smell overpowered every other smell something snapped in Sakura. She flopped on the mattress and retreated to the other side of the bed. Her chest was heaving as she was taking big gulps of air. Her body was protesting against the movement and wanted to be back next to Sasuke, who was curiously looking at her.
But just as her lust for blood wanted for her to take the blood from Sasuke's hands her fright took over and images of the day in Hawaii filled her mind. The image of the vampire attacking the woman was nauseating. Her throat tightened and uncomfortable feeling washed over her entire body.
"What's wrong?" Sasuke was taking in her conflicting state. He could feel her lust for blood as her eyes never left the blood, but the fear was so evident in her posture. Her body was rigid as a statue.
"She-.. I saw her being killed." the words left her mouth before she could even realize.
Sasuke was next to her sitting on the bed in a second.
"By who?" His mouth was in a tight line.
"I-I don't know!" Sakura said hysteric. "In Hawaii, behind the door of my hotel room. That man attacked her." It surprised her how easier the last part came. She was so sure her voice would break, however, it didn't.
Sasuke's body tensed. The thought of her seeing a sight like that wasn't making him happy. Instead it made him angry. Wasn't Itachi supposed to watch over her? Because if he had than none of this should have happened. She shouldn't have seen someone getting their blood sucked off and that was something he had thought Itachi would have taken care of. And not to forget the fact that a complete stranger - a vampire nonetheless - got so close to her. Sakura's scent as a human was pleasant for everyone. Even Naruto had admitted that at one point.
Fortunately, the other vampire didn't take notice of the pink haired beauty and focused on the girl in front of him.
No matter how terrified Sakura she still needed to drink blood. Her body might start weakening and eventually even completely die if she didn't get any nutrition her body required.
"You need to drink."
"No." she said stubbornly when Sasuke offered the bad of blood to her.
She didn't want to drink it. She didn't want to be like that man in the corridor or the monsters in tales.
"You have to drink, otherwise you'll get weaker and weaker until die." Sasuke was dead serious.
"I can't." Sakura was close to a break down. She didn't want to die like Sasuke said she would if she didn't drink the metallic liquid, but neither did she want to drink someone else's blood.
Sasuke grabbed Sakura's wrist and pulled her closer to him. She tried to struggle against him, but his hold was tight and pulled her even closer to his body.
Sakura's body trembled at the contact between her and Sasuke. It was weird, for last time she had touched him he was a lot colder whereas nowhe was the same temperature. It was calming to have him hold her hand but she was still terrified of the idea of drinking blood. Her mind was having a battle. A part of her wanted to please Sasuke and the feeling was even stronger now that he was holding her, but she was afraid.
"Sakura, you have to drink."
She shook her head her eyes closed.
"All of us has been through the same," his voice was low as he tried to get through her, "I know you're afraid, but you're not a monster." Sakura whimpered. How can he just read her mind like that?
"This is donated blood Itachi got for you." Sasuke lifted Sakura's head which was lowered as she looked at her lap. "Please." his voice was desperate. Her struggling against him was weak compared to, for example, to Tenten. She needed to drink to get in control of herself.
With hesitant hands Sakura took the bag in to her own hands. She swallowed hard and took a deep breath.
"Just rip the top off and drink." his voice was soft.
Sakura suddenly blushed and began fiddling with the plastic.
"C-can you turn around?" she asked embarrassed. The idea of him watching her drinking blood didn't appeal to her. She would much rather do it without anyone's eyes on her, even though she didn't mind too much, but still. It probably wasn't that big of a deal for Sasuke to see her do it, but for her it was.
Sasuke stood up without a word and turned his back to her. He started walking at the head of the bed avoiding looking at Sakura. He wanted to be sure she drank but also knew that he shouldn't pressure her too much. She needed to get used to things on her own pace.
The sound of the bag being ripped filled the room and a strong scent of blood filled the room. Sasuke could hear someone downstairs gasping and he doubted it was Ino. She was the youngest of all of the vampires in the house aside from Sakura. It was a common knowledge for everyone that she had the most weakest resistant towards blood. Especially of flowing blood.
All Sakura's emotions had somewhat an effect on Sasuke. He could feel her emotions and in what condition her body was in if he concentrated enough. Even if he wasn't watching her he could feel her body tremble in anticipation and fright. His mind was telling him to go and help her but somehow he knew that that would be a wrong thing to do. She had to get over this obstacle on her own.
And then he could hear her drinking. A heavy sigh of relief left his mouth and he hadn't even realized he was so nervous whether or not she would drink the blood. But she did it.
He felt so relieved. Like a burden was taken off his chest.
Sasuke would be lying if he said that the blood didn't tempt him because it did. His body craved for it but he was able to control the lust and put it somewhere dark in his mind where it couldn't affect his decision making. But what he wanted more was to turn around and look at the girl on the bed. His body tingled at the thought of seeing her drink blood and it didn't matter if it wasn't from a human which in his opinion would be even more arousing.
His perseverance crumbled after a moment and he gave himself a small sneak peak. His body trembled at the sight and all his nerve endings came alive as he gazed the girl sitting in the bed sucking the blood out of the bag. There was just something alluring in it that Sasuke's whole body turned to face the girl, who, in fact, was looking straight at him.
