Cat Tales

21

Kenshin thought about taking his car to follow the silver trail of magic Miss had given him to follow. Speed was needed, but as soon as he saw it went through the park near his apartment he dismissed the idea. He ran through tall bushes and fields of flowers uncaring of the mess he left behind.

The cat had spoken to him. There had been no doubt whatsoever to him about how special the cat was. He always knew there was something different. However, that she could talk was something that far surpassed his expectations. If she hadn't been suffering as she was he would have questioned her further but his mind didn't even conjure the idea back at his house. His first instinct was to find this person the cat wanted him to protect and to do so.

As if driven in auto-pilot his body moved this way and that. His mind was so firmly set that following the trail was like breathing. It was so easy when he was as focused as he was now. Like this, he could conquer the world.

Thankfully this time it didn't rain. Last time proved to be uncomfortable with his clothes stuck against his skin. It also impeded his movements and right now he had a sinking feeling he needed all the things in his favor that he could get. This mad man was definitely stronger than him. He wasn't eager to meet him again. In fact, he wanted to get to this place and to find this person and take her back to the Association and then to a safe house. Let Hiko, the strong and perfect deal with this matter.

His body froze momentarily when the silver trail ended abruptly. Not knowing where to go Kenshin glanced all around him until he spotted the trail again. It had not disappeared but it traveled vertically up the side of a tall building. It could be seen from a window so the red-headed detective decided to go up and check every once in a while for the silver filigree of magic. It was really hard to see the end to the apartment it led to.

He walked to the building as casually as possible. His hair was an instant give away so he knew he couldn't try the 'I forgot my key' excuse for the security guard would know he was lying. He had to try the 'I am someone's friend' excuse to see if it worked. It was his best option.

A tad bit nervous he went to go in and to his surprise when he pushed the entrance door it opened without a problem. There was no security in this building and he blessed his luck. At the end of the corridor waited an elevator and he quickly took it. He pressed the button for floor number five. After he waited the full minute for the elevator to reach it he went to the window and watched the silver trail go up further. He went back to the elevator and seeing there were only ten floors he pressed for floor number eight. When he walked out he noticed the window in this corridor was opened and he moved to it hastily. Carefully he stuck out his head and looked up to see if he managed to find where silver track ended. As soon as he did battle cries reached his ears.

Magic exploded in a billion of colors and one spell collided against another and he immediately realized the mad-man had found his victim first. Clumsily he held on to the window and was about to jump to the roof for dear life when a raggedy scream made him freeze. His golden eyes stared up and to his horror a body began to fall. He made himself smaller and pushed himself against the window frame in order to save himself but he didn't need to. The force with which the body was thrown made it fall down in an arch maybe two feet away from him. Dismayed Kenshin watched as the body fell and flinched when it hit the ground below. It pained him because he knew it was not the mad-man's body. It was the person he had been asked to protect.

"Yo," the mad man's voice boomed from the roof as he looked down at the detective, "How are you doing red mage?" the man asked with a grin.

Kenshin looked up and glared at the maniac perching over the edge of the roof uncaring about the life he just took, "What did you do?"

The man made a surprised face and once again grinned, "I killed her. Don't worry…she was an old hag…wouldn't survive another five years, I assure you. This is the most merciful death I have given someone in decades."

"Decades?" asked Kenshin at a total loss. The man looked to be in his mid-twenties.

The man merely nodded, "I'm Enishi…and I have an appointment elsewhere, sorry." The white haired mage finally said and a second later vanished into thin air.

Kenshin cursed and went back to the eight floor corridor. He dialed Hiko's cellphone and told him about the murdered woman. After that, the redhead too vanished. He needed to go back to Miss…if only to comfort her in her last minutes.

To be continued…

AN: This is the fifth victim. So…Kaoru only has four lives left.
