Over 250 followers. Wow guys, thank you so much! I'm glad that people are still reading this and thank you for everyone that takes the time to do so.

So I had one review of NikMik that I kinda wanted to answer but since it's a guest user I will do it here :)

NikMik
wait...so kirsten was one of the girls who interviewed with klaus for the position and now she's filing a lawsuit against him?
i hope she doesn't drag caroline into this mess...although it looks like that's going to happen...and why was she just going through caroline's stuff? didn't stefan notice anything? and how did she get caroline's number?
although what klaus did was wrong & inappropriate, i have a feeling that kirstin might be a little crazy too. i'm so glad audrey is there to be the sound reasoning!
update soon please!

Yes Kirsten was interviewed by Klaus, she was the first girl actually and she's definitely unhappy about it. She will try and drag Caroline with her but she doesn't know that much about Caroline yet, she was the only one that refused to talk to her. She was hoping to be able to talk with Klaus and just decided to snoop, to see if there was anything she could use with her case. She does seem to believe that Caroline has some ties with Klaus, which is how she supposedly got the job. Stefan noticed but she had made up an excuse and since Stefan is new as well he believed that she worked for Klaus as well.
How she got Caroline's number... yeah that's a good question since not even her family seems to own it. Well she had the numbers from all the interviewees and it's possible that someone gave her the information she needed on that part..,
What Klaus did was wrong and he will soon realize that. Kirstin isn't totally sane either no, she feels wronged which is understandibly but she takes it a bit too far. Audrey has a heavy task as a voice of reason with this bunch! Thank you for the reviews!

This is definitely a shorter chapter than what we're used to. Sorry for that but the next chapter should be longer, it will be clear at the end of this chapter.

Chapter 21

When they reached the parking lot Klaus gained some speed and walked in front of Caroline. They had been silent during the elevator ride and Caroline looked at him funnily when he stopped walking next to her but didn't say anything about it. What did she know about his weird habits and customs?

She was surprised however when they reached a silver car, the supposed Hybrid that Kol had coveted, and he opened the door for her. She raised her eyebrows at him, wondering what his motive was but stepped inside the car none the less. She didn't thank him and observed him for a moment while he walked around the car to enter as well.

He didn't seem to mean anything with his 'chivalry' it almost seemed like he was working on auto-pilot. Like he was doing something that he didn't truly want to do and she found herself to grow curious about what sort of matter he wanted to discuss. She cursed under her breath, she wasn't supposed to care. Maybe she could still leave?

She could make up some excuse; she could have forgotten something in her office? She looked outside her window and contemplated it for a moment but it wouldn't matter. He would offer to walk her back up and still offer her the ride. Besides whatever this matter on hand was, she wanted to know and she would just have to accept that maybe she was getting curious about the man.

She heard a click on her side and turned her head just as he took a seat next to her, she fidgeted in her seat while he looked at her. "So what did you needed to discuss?"

He took a deep breath, why did everyone felt the need to include her in this matter? Why had he allowed it, he was already regretting it. He hadn't even discussed the bet with her after she found out and here he was, telling her about the consequences. Would she enjoy this? The predicament he found himself in because of their foolish actions? He couldn't blame her if she did. Still he wasn't sure, she always managed to surprise him.

"There's a legal matter I need to discuss with you," he told her and he could see her roll her eyes in annoyance.

"Seriously?" she exclaimed and raised her arms in the air, "You brought me her to discuss a legal matter? Don't you have lawyers to do that for you? I can't believe I even expected something else," she reached for the door, wanting to open it but a hand around her wrist stopped her. She turned back and noticed how he was out of his seat, leaning over her and kept a gentle hold on her wrist.

Their eyes locked and she became aware of how close he was, his head was a couple of inches above her and she could feel a current pass through them. She felt tempted to reach forward, to get closer and she dug her hands in the leather of the seat in frustration. Hands, she looked back down, breaking the contact, she hadn't even noticed that he had let go of her.

While she looked down he quickly sat back in his seat, already missing the warmth of her so near. He was shocked by his own actions; that he had actually tried to stop her to leave. He just wanted the change to explain what was going on, to get her to give him a chance, but touching her, that was a line he hadn't wanted to cross. He had never grabbed anyone without their consent and he felt awful, it was just a tiny step from forcing someone to stay to hurting them and he had seen the last happen too many times in his life.

He leaned back in his seat and he was aware of her eyes searching him for a sign, a response or an explanation. He jolted back upright, she hadn't left yet. Why hadn't she left? Was she afraid of him?

He looked back at her, "You know it's impolite to stare," he said softly and he just knew she would be rolling her eyes at him.

"Don't you know it's impolite not to explain yourself?" she shot back and he had to admit that she was right. She was giving him a chance to explain himself and he couldn't understand why she would give him that chance.

She looked at him leaning back in his seat, his eyes were closed and for a moment he seemed haunted, she wasn't sure by what exactly but she knew there was more to him than he liked to show. She was catching up on the flaws in his stories, the moments he showed her his vulnerability and she knew she should have been shocked by his nerve to grab her but she couldn't get herself to actually leave. What was so important?

She could hear him sigh, "You can still leave you know," he told her and it sounded like he wanted her to. She contemplated it for a moment before she made her final decision, she was staying. Caroline Forbes wasn't that easy to get rid of.

"I can, but I won't," she told him before she turned towards him, "Besides I still have a question for you," she still wasn't sure how she felt about it but she needed to know his answer. "Why did you tell Stefan to hire me?"

Klaus started the car when he heard that Caroline was staying, he hadn't expected her question but he knew it couldn't stay a secret for long, not after Kol had led her into the right direction. He glanced at her and she didn't looked annoyed or mad, she just wanted to know the answer that he held and he wanted to give it to her, he did, he just wasn't sure what it was.

"Why do you think I did it?" he asked trying to get a feel of her reaction.

She looked up at that in surprise, she hadn't really thought much about it, sure she had some theories and they all led back to one thing, "Well you can't blame me for thinking it was to get me into your bed…"

He chuckled darkly, "No, I haven't really given you a reason to think anything else, now have I?"

She looked at him and seemed to weigh her options, he truly seemed to believe that that was all she thought of him and she needed to set him straight, "You really haven't…at first."

He glanced at her while he stopped letting someone cross the streets, "You think that has changed?" he asked, what was she trying to tell him.

She sighed, "I think you treat me different at times, you did help me out without wanting anything in return the first time we met," she pointed out, referring to that time in Trevor's, "Sometimes I think I get you, that all you want is a quick lay, but then you do something that makes me think something else. So I need to know, why did you do it?"

She was right, he was constantly changing his approach to her, first he had only wanted to bed her, then he wanted to get to know her and know? He knew exactly what he wanted, he just didn't want to admit it. He sighed, she deserved the truth though, even if it painted him in an even worse light, "You refused my job offer multiple times and I thought I understood you, that you were just trying to make it harder on me but then I realized you were serious. I had never encountered someone like you; most women just want to get close because they want something. You were different and it intrigued me. I wanted to pursue you, liking the idea of a challenge," he admitted and ignored her accusing stare, "But it wasn't just about wanting you to finish the job, I treated you different from the start and I hadn't even realized it until I was in too deep. There is something about you Caroline," he breathed out and looked at her, their eyes crossing and she seemed breathless for a moment, listening to his every word. "Something I couldn't deny, so when I met with Stefan and noticed your application I figured it would be a way to get you close, but then Kol happened and Damon… Things changed. But if you want to know if I got you hired because I wanted to sleep with you, then yes I have to admit that was a large part of my reasoning."

She didn't know what to say, sure she had expected to hear him tell her he had only wanted to sleep with her, but to actually hear him say it, and the way he had said it. Almost like he regretted it… but what was it that he had regretted? Wanting her, or having her close by? She remembered those walls they had encountered; he didn't want to lower them, neither did she.

"I don't know what to say right now," she admitted, "I want to be angry for what you did and I am but I can't be angry at you without admitting that if you hadn't helped me out, no matter how impure those motivations where, without that help I wouldn't have gotten the job and I love the work I'm doing."

"You would have gotten the job regardless love, Stefan told me how much he loved you right after your interview," he didn't want her to talk his behavior into something good, she didn't owe him anything.

"I wouldn't even have gotten an interview, my old boss ensured that," she scoffed annoyed at her position, "And I wasn't thanking you for that, I am thanking you for not going through with your intentions. You didn't bother me when I started working there and you haven't tried so hard…"

"Well," he tried to joke, "You did manage to ruin my plan when Kol got involved," they laughed and it seemed to ease the tension.

"Well you did start a bet, abusing your position of power to get laid," she countered.

"Yeah, not my best choice in all honesty."

"You finally realized that?" she asked curious, she hadn't expected him to admit his fault and she wondered what changed his mind.

"Yes I was forced to think back about it today," he told her finally getting into the topic he wanted to avoid.

"What made you think about it?" she wondered, he didn't seem like one to reminisce about the past.

"Like I told you when you wanted to make a run for it, legal matters. One of the girls wants to press charges." They stopped at a crossroad and he looked over at her, she tried not to show her reaction and it almost amused him, she was putting up a front and he wondered what was going on inside her head. "Where exactly do you live?" he asked, he knew the general area but he had no idea which street she lived in. She gave him her address and he quickly turned right.

"So you're being sued," she said, she wondered who it could be and why. You couldn't just sue someone for sleeping with you, even in a position of power. Or could you?

"Yes, it's a first," he admitted and she laughed.

"Well if you keep continuing like this I'm sure it won't be the last," she said mockingly, "But what case does she have? And why do you want to talk to me about it?" she wondered but she knew the answer, he would probably need her help.

"Apparently she has made contact with the other interviewees and deducted that I slept with all of them while none of them got the job. Because Audrey did without an interview Kirstin believed that the interviews where a scam."

"Kirstin," she said in realization, "Blonde, tall and an utter bitch?" she asked remembering the blonde from earlier that day.

"I wouldn't know, I can't say I remember her, but the utter bitch part is probably right," he said and looked over in realization, "You know her."

"I was confronted this morning by some blonde named Kirstin, found her snooping in my office and she told me that she worked for you. And how do you mean you don't remember how she looks like? You slept with her!"

"I had sex with multiple women that day and I only remember one," he held her gaze, "And that's the one I didn't sleep with," he told her and heard the sound of her sharp inhale. Still he focused on the rest of her words, "Kirstin looked you up, what did she want?" He hadn't expected that, even if he wanted to keep Caroline out of it, it seemed like Kirstin had different plans.

Caroline tried to ignore what he had told her, she had to focus on the business at hand. "She told me that they were investigating your behavior during the interviews or something. I told her I had told her everything I wanted her to know and it wasn't her business. When she left she basically told me that I got the job with the Salvatores because I was screwing you."

"That must be how she got the information, she pretended to work for me…"

"Annoying as that is, it's not a crime," she told Klaus, "What are you planning on doing?"

"I'm still waiting to hear her demands; I can't make a decision before that."

"So you're just going to give in?" she asked, "Take it lying down?"

"Would you prefer it if this was made public? You'll be dragged down as well you know, she has already approached you."

"No," she sighed, "I just, I don't know, just a messed up situation I guess," she wondered why he wasn't asking for her help, she didn't know how she could though, maybe he had realized that as well.

He parked in front of her apartment, "That it is." He was waiting for her to get out now that she was home but she didn't seem to move away. She was fidgeting with buttons at the side of the car and reached for his glove compartment, stalling herself. She didn't want to leave yet and she didn't know why, she opened the compartment and he tried to stop her but it was already too late. She opened it and revealed a pair of sunglasses.

She reached for them and noticed how they were clearly woman sunglasses, what was Klaus doing with those in the car? She didn't think much of it at first until she noticed his clenched jaw when she grabbed them. There was more to them than a simple item. "What's this?" she asked trying to hear the story to the accessory.

"Just some sunglasses sweetheart, I'm sure you've seen them before," he avoided her prying eyes and focused on his steering wheel, if she just got out of the car he could leave and ignore that she had found them. Caroline was good, she should never have to face the darkness that came with Tatia's story.

"They're not yours," she stated when he avoided her question.

"Nope, they're not."

"Who's are they?"

"That's not important," he told and grabbed the sunglasses, putting them back in the compartment. "You should probably go."

"We weren't done yet, Kirstin-"

"Can wait," Klaus told her, "Caroline just go, please," he pleaded and she could hear exhaustion in his voice. Whoever owned these sunglasses, she seemed to be the reason for Klaus' walls. They were doing fine until she found them.

She exited the car but before she closed the door she turned around, leaning into the car and facing Klaus, "If it isn't important," she told him, "You wouldn't have kept them."

She closed the door and walked towards her apartment, she had expected to see him leave, to drive away the second she had closed the door but was surprised when instead she heard the engine turn stop and not long after, Klaus walked out of the car with the sunglasses in hand.

He cursed the blonde in front of him, how did she have this kind of power over him? He didn't need to tell her, but somehow he felt himself wanting too. Maybe it was because he didn't want to watch her leave, or maybe he genuinely cared…

"Okay fine, they might have been important to me, but that has changed, things change and now, now they're just sunglasses."

"Sunglasses that can change your mood in a second," she told him.

"They're just glasses," he insisted.

"Maybe it's not the object, but the person behind it," she offered and Klaus winced, she was spot on as usual.

"Maybe," he agreed and wanted to turn around, to leave, but he decided to took a plunge for once, "Can we continue this story inside?"

"What story?"

He held up the glasses, "This story."

Klaus and Caroline talked about the bet and the lawsuit and it's not all over yet but at least they can discuss matters without fighting. That's progress right?

Now I don't know if anyone remembered the sunglasses? I mentioned them in chapter 2 but I realized that I've never wrote Klaus in a car after so I needed to bring them back. His back story is coming up next! Which is why this chapter is a bit shorter, I don't want to rush his background story it probably needs his own chapter. So Klaus will go up in Caroline's house :)

Okay so please let me now what you think and have you guys watched TVD? I'm trying something new right now and I started a new story called Fatal Bite which continues after the last episode with one drastic change, Tyler did bite her. Either way I'm shamelessly self promoting right now but I wanted to let you guys now because that one will be a multi chapter fic as well so my attention will be divided by two. I've never done that before so for now I will focus on that one to build it up but I will definitely continue this story. It was here first and too much is going on right now.

I will update in a week again, Friday or Saturday on it's latest. Let me now what you thought of this chapter, even if it's criticism, make it constructive ones.
