I open the door and sneak out of the girls room. It is midnight and the halls are dark and eery. I couldn't sleep the thought of Maxon has kept me up and it ha for a week now, I finally gave up sleep and decided to go for a walk. I hear the snoring of rebels through the doors and can tel that I must be the only person up in this wing of the base. I walk through the halls silently, I think of Maxon how he was dead to me when I saw him, how his gaze had turned cold and hard.
Like his father's.
Maxon had become stone like, and I worried that I would never be able to reach him now that he was like this. I wondered through the dark blind.
Blind is how I feel right now actually. I am sliding up the rebel ranks because of my skill and position, Olivia and Tuesday have made me their equal among the other girls, but Liz is still my only friend. Liz reminds me of Marlee.
I close my eyes.
She's gone now like Maxon, but he is worst he's here, but he's also not. I turn the corner and am blinded by a flashlight.
"Who's there?"
It's Maxon.
Speak of the devil.
"Ericka, 143167," I say my assigned rebel number, I received it a few days ago during the weekly rally.
" you're not suppose to be out of bed," he said authority in his voice
"Neither are you."
"I'm on patrol,"
"Why the night shift?"
"I can't sleep at night,"
"Why?"
"Do you always ask this many questions?" He asks
"I have no idea," I detach myself from him, he doesn't like the Maxon I knew, but like the manipulated rebel guard Max.
He looks away.
"I'm sorry to ask, but why can't you sleep at night?"
"It's a long story,"
"Hey, I have all night,"
"Well, I just can't remember anything, nothing before a month or so ago, they give me a pill each day that should help but it isn't working, and no one here treats like... Normal. It's likes there's something form before that I can't remember. It drives me crazy, I haven't really remembered anything either. I-I'm just really confused..."
"Yeah me too, this place is almost a little crazy," I say he smiles and his eyes soften up.
"Maxon do you trust them?"
"Maxon? It's Max,"
"Oh, sorry, I'm bad with names, but I'm serious, do you trust them?"
"I really don't know for sure why, they've taken care of me and helped me out, what's wrong?"
"Your pills aren't working? Go a week without them, see what hapens," it's getting let I've gotta go," with that I turned and left.
I lay awake in bed staring at the bunk above me where Tina, the youngest girl in the room, is sleeping. I still can't sleep, I do sometimes, but the nightmares and out of control thoughts keep me awake. It's starting to effect my combat and weapon training. I roll out of bed.
It has been a week since I saw Maxon.
He is probably out on guard duty so I slip on my boots and jeans and sneak out into the hall.
It is dark and quiet.
I go down the hall and towards the area I last saw him, but when I arrive the hall is empty.
I keep looking.
After a few minutes I see a flashlight beam, and am about to say hello when I see it is not Maxon.
I turned and quickly, quetly ran away.
I was almost ready to give up when his familiar form turned a corner and almost ran into me.
"Oh hey," I say, he takes a step back locks his eyes with mine.
"America, I remember,"
