Chapter 21: Chasing Cars
"Dad,"
"Hey dad,"
"I'm watching the game," he grumbled.
"I decided what I want for my birthday," I said, flipping through a magazine.
He grunted, "The answer is no. You are not getting a puppy."
I pouted, "I wasn't going to say that."
"Or a pony,"
"Dad, I wasn't going to-"
"Or a gun," he frowned.
"Dad!" I shouted. He turned away from the game and looked at me.
"What do you want for your Birthday, Mara?"
"I want the new Disney Princess CD," I said, flipping to the horoscope page. June, June, June.
"Wait, what? Mara-"
A car pulled into the driveway. Dad shot up, almost knocking over his beer, Bella must be back. A few weeks after the whole fiasco with Jacob, Bella decided to take Edward to Jacksonville to see Mom. What a bitch.
I hadn't seen Jacob or any of the Pack since that day. If Bella wasn't allowed to see them, then I wasn't either. Alice could see everything with her weird-ass fortune telling powers so even contemplating the idea of contact would get me into trouble.
I was a bit hurt that no one had the decency to call. Lisa and Ems were both offered summer jobs in California so they were busy with preparations; I was pretty much on my own. Stupid Bella
"Welcome home, Kid!" Dad shouted. "How was Jacksonville?"
"Moist. And buggy" she moaned, I rolled my eyes.
"How's mom?" I asked as they walked into the Living room.
"She's good, she was asking about you." That's surprising. "She asked me to give you this." Bella threw a bag at me.
I opened the bag to find my photo album I had left a few summers ago. I smiled at the photos of my mom and I dancing together when I was a toddler and my old friends from Phoenix smiling at me from the photographs.
"Jacob wants to talk to me?" Bella asked, I rolled my eyes and slammed the book shut. I went to the kitchen to get some water.
The phone rang.
I stupidly answered it.
"Hello," I said sweetly.
"Bella?" Jacob said in his husky voice.
Ew, no. "It's Mara." I said coldly. Bella flew into the kitchen.
"Hey," He said slightly nervous. "Sorry we haven't been in contact, you know how it is."
"Actually, Jacob, I don't know how it is. Care to enlighten me to how you or Quil or even Embry can't visit, call or text me? I'm all ears." I growled.
"It's complicated. Why can't you come down here?"
"Why do you THINK I can't?" I hissed down the phone, glaring at Bella.
Jacob cursed, "They don't control you Mara. You shouldn't even have to be around them."
"Believe me, I don't want to." I said quietly. Bella went to grab the phone but I shuffled back.
"Is your sister back?" I sighed.
"Yeah, I guess that's why you called." I said dully. He said nothing so I handed the phone over.
"It's your chew toy," I said venomously, making sure Jacob heard me on the other end. I stalked out of the kitchen and ran upstairs to my room to watch Peter pan with my endless supply of Red Vines.
[Page Break]
"If I asked you to do something, would you trust me?" Edward asked my sister as we drove to school.
You're a goddamn Vampire, who would trust you?
Edward shot me a glare.
"That depends."
We pulled into the lot.
"What do you want me to do?" Bella asked with her doe eyes.
"I want both of you to stay in the car." He pulled into his usual spot and turned off the engine. I snorted and opened the door, getting out the car.
Then I saw him.
Edward was there is an instant, dragging me back to the car.
"Get OFF!" I pulled, his grip loosened and he backed off.
"I'll go and see what he wants; if it's just to talk then I will tell you." I turned on my heel and made my way over to him. Jacob stood out, a lot. I could see girls giving him a very appreciative once over before giving me a glare as I approached him. No one lingered on his face and people left him a bubble of space. He looked almost dangerous.
"Hey," I said as I stopped in front of him.
"Does he think I would hurt you?" Jacob growled, glaring at the car.
"I think it's his way of disciplining Bella. It involves me following his rules too."
His hands clenched, "You don't have to follow his rules. Neither does Bella."
"Why are you here?" I asked shortly, standing up a bit taller. I still looked ridiculous next to his huge frame.
"Just to talk," He said.
"Fine," I said. "He's just here to talk," I said under my breath.
Edward got out the car, grabbed Bella's hand and walked over to us. Jacobs face hardened as Edward stopped and pulled Bella slightly behind him.
"You could have called us," Edward said.
"Sorry, I don't have leeches on my speed dial." Jacob sneered, I bit back a laugh.
"You could have reached me at Bella's house, of course." Ugh don't remind me.
Edward glared at me. "You know I can hear everything you say, your thoughts are very loud." He hissed, becoming a bit scary.
I took a step back and bumped into Jacob; he looked down at me before glaring at Edward.
"This is hardly the place, Jacob. Could we discuss this later?"
"Sure, sure. I'll stop by your crypt after school." Jacob snorted. The Cullen house was actually really nice.
"I already know what you came to say," Edward reminded Jacob.
"You didn't tell her?" Jacob's eyes widened. "What are you afraid she'd take our side?"
I looked at Bella and we shared a confused look.
"Please drop it, Jacob." Edward warned.
"Why?" he challenged.
"Jacob, what's going on? I asked.
He looked down at me but ignored me. How nice.
"Edward?" Bella asked, he ignored her and glared at Jacob
"Jake?" She tried.
"Hey, Mar!" a voice shouted, we all turned. My face instantly lit up.
"Hugo, what are you doing here?" I asked as he approached.
"I've got a Job to do in one of the labs. Some idiot making a mess, apparently it's really bad."
Oops, my bad.
I could feel the others waiting to get back to their conversation. I grabbed Hugo's arm and walked away from their pissing contest.
We talked for a while until I heard Mr Greene shouting at students.
"I know this may sound weird but, can I have your number?" My mouth dropped open, whaaaat?
"O-okay." I grabbed his hand and scribbled in down in red ink.
"I'll see you later," he winked. I blushed and scurried back to Bella, who looked like she was being restrained by her boyfriend.
"Okay, get to class." Mr Greene shouted.
"Get to school, Jake." Bella whispered.
"Ah, Mr Cullen. Do we have a problem here?"
I stood closer to Jacob, trying to get him to calm down before he killed a teacher.
"No, Mr Greene." Edward replied. I looked at Jacob's motorcycle, wishing I had one.
"Who is your friend, Miss Swan?" My head shot up and I inched closer to Jacob. I hated it when teachers talked to me. "Is he a student here?"
"Nope," Jacob replied. A half smirk on his lips.
"Then I suggest you remove yourself from the premises at once, young man, before I call the police." I let out a tiny giggle, imagining my Dad coming to arrest Jacob.
"Something funny, Miss Swan?" He snapped.
"No sir," I mumbled.
"Yes, sir." Jacob said snapping a military salute. He gave me a small smile and nodded to Bella; I looked at Edward and decided to chance my luck.
Toodaloo
I climbed on the bike behind Jacob, wrapping my arms around his waist.
"Mara, don't!" Edward snarled.
"Quickly, go!" I whispered.
"Miss Swan," Mr Greene shouted as Jacob kick started the engine before speeding off.
"You're going to be in so much trouble," Jacob laughed against the wind hitting us.
"When am I ever out of trouble?"
