I'm not going to repeat the scenes in the actual episode, as it's a little pointless. Hopefully this still makes sense.
The journey to southern London was not comforting, what with Ruth, Elena and Harry in one car. The silence was so oppressive that both Harry and Ruth felt they were being weighted down by it. Elena alone seemed unaffected. When the car parked outside MI5's building, Elena was led inside by Dimitri and Erin, whom Harry had called to meet them there. Ruth got out of the car, and Harry followed, indicating to the driver to stay put.
"You are not going in there," he said, voice dangerously low.
"Yes I am," she said. "I can't sit at home and wonder and wait. And if it's my time, it's going to happen anyway. I'm not stupid, and I'm not going to walk straight into danger if I can avoid it."
"Then go home," he said.
"Why is it fair that you can risk your life to protect mine, but I can't risk my life to protect yours?" she asked, her blue eyes demanding honesty.
"You know exactly why," he murmured. She sighed, knowing there was no arguing with him. He smiled slightly, having come to the same conclusion about her. "I can't talk you out of this can I?"
"No."
"Come here." She did, for a gentle soft kiss. "Lets get this over with."
They went up to the top floor and found Elena in a small room with one way glass. Harry was struck by the frightening similarities to last time, but the room was much cleaner and brighter than before at the very least.
"Please go home," Harry said, without any conviction that she would. Ruth didn't even reply further than squeezing his hand.
"Do you want me in there to listen?" she asked quietly as Callum came into the room.
"You might as well," he said.
"Don't sulk," she said. He sighed but then nodded in agreement.
About twenty minutes later, Harry bowed his head, thinking hard. Sasha had arrived, followed by his father a few minutes later. This was going exactly as it had last time, with Elena claiming hijack and Erin and Dimitri following the leads. It would look odd if Harry had told them not to bother. And on top of that, Harry was terrified of losing Ruth. This was too similar for comfort. He couldn't bear it were things to happen the same way. Ruth was having a conversation with Callum, and for the moment she was out of the way. Out of danger.
Harry jumped slightly when he felt Ilya's hand on his shoulder. "I need to talk to you alone Harry." He hesitated, but then nodded, and they left in silence, until they came to an empty private room.
"What do you want Ilya?"
"She's traitorous," Ilya said bluntly. "And she's never going to change. Is she?"
"You knew," Harry said. "At the time? You knew she was passing information on to me."
"Of course I knew," Ilya said. "Despite what you people think, the world isn't split into Britain, the US and the middle east. I'm not stupid. Why do you think I sent her back to Moscow? For four months. That wasn't a coincidence, Harry."
"Then why did you… Well, not my business."
"I stayed with her because I thought she'd changed," Ilya said. "She never will, will she?"
"I'm not the person to ask that."
"You knew her then."
"I never knew her Ilya," Harry said honestly. "I never did."
"Have you called about the plane?"
"I think she's lying," Harry said. "I think she wants me to order the plane to be shot down. British forces, shooting down a Russian plane with no terrorist on board? Disaster."
"That would completely ruin the partnership deal we've just signed."
"Exactly," Harry said quietly.
"She's been lying to me for thirty years," Ilya said, as if to himself.
"Don't do anything stupid," Harry warned.
"Like what?"
"Like murdering your wife on British soil," Harry said delicately. Ilya smiled a rather disturbing smile that made Harry wary. "Think of what it would do to Sasha."
"Why should I care? He's not my son." Ilya walked away before Harry could contradict him.
"The plane's landed safely at Charles De Gaulle," Ruth said, as Harry returned. No Ilya in sight. "It was the nearest airport."
"Come with me." Ruth didn't argue, and she left.
"What?" she asked as soon as they were alone, in the room next door.
"You need to get out of here," he said. "I think Ilya's going to kill Elena. He's made his mind up, and I doubt he's going to wait until they get back to Russia. You need to leave."
"I'm not going without you," she said. "I can't leave you here."
"Please. Go."
"Harry, I can't," she said. "I love you, I'm not going to leave you here with two murderous Russians."
"Please, Ruth," he begged. "I need you to go."
She shook her head, and the silence grew between them. "Only if you come with me."
"Yeah, okay then," he said, seeing no real reason to stay, unprofessional though it might be. It would be safer for the pair of them. "I'll go home with you."
"Good."
"The drivers outside," Harry added. "I told him not to leave."
"Of course you did," she said, kissing him slowly and gently.
The door to the room banged open and they broke apart, staring at Sasha Gavrik, pointing his gun at the pair of them.
I meant to put this up this morning, but I've been putting it off, because of the cliffhanger. More soon, hopefully tomorrow. (I know, how could I leave it there?)
