Hi, everyone! Sorry for the delay! A lot of work has kept me from updating any sooner. I 'll leave you with this chapter, it's tiny but I promise I'll update another one as soon as I can.
All my best,
Ana
Robin never smoked. Never. Until that night. He had been left in front of a shabby café waiting for Sollozzo and Nottingham. A car pulled over in front of him he was still in the middle of the cigarette.
He recognised the cat-like eyes of the only person he allowed himself to hate and knew it was time. He threw the cigarette on the floor and stepped on it. He entered the car.
"Good evening, Mr Locksley", Walsh Sollozzo greeted him.
"Good evening" Robin slurred looking Nottingham in the eye.
"Search him" the mobster commanded.
"Turn around and face me", the captain snarled in annoyance.
Robin did as he was told. He wouldn't compromise his goal this early in the evening. He kept in mind that he would blow those men's brains out later. He would relish in it, but first he had to wait. But he had to be patient first.
"Sorry about your face, lad. Had to be done. I'm sure you'll forgive me that one", said the captain, smiling wickedly while tapping the other man's shoulder.
Locksley paid no heed.
He remained silent during the whole trip which was a series of U-turns, manoeuvres worthy of several tickets for major traffic misconducts, but all that seemed to be covered. No one would dare to stop that car. Arriving at Tony's was a relief. Indeed it was discreet and quiet. Perfect setting for the almost perfect crime. Robin was the first to enter; then, the other two men, following right behind.
They sat at a table in the middle of the room, maybe not to draw too much attention to themselves. Nottingham grabbed the menu first, something that did not quite agree with Sollozzo, yet he let it pass.
The waiter came to their table to take their orders. Nottingham and Sollozzo would take the veal which according to the later was the best in the whole city. Locksley ordered the good ol' spaghetti. They all agreed they should have red wine.
"The best you have", Sallozzo asked the waiter.
The waiter went to the counter, took a bottle and three glasses and went back to their table; he poured three glasses. While he did it, a train passed in the neighbourhood, roaring like a thunder over their heads. An idea came to Robin's mind. It was when they found themselves alone that Sallozzo began to talk.
"Do you speak Italian?"
"Un po", Locksley answered.
Sollozzo gave out a smug smile.
"Nottingham, I'm going to speak Italian with Locksley."
"Do your thing", the cop responded.
"Me dispiace…" Sollozzo said, point at his face, looking directly to Robin's bruise.
"Non importa" Robin declared, not in the mood for pleasantries.
"Oh…"
"Perché sono qui?" Robin asked, his voice irritable and curious.
"Malva DiAvolo would never listen to me after what I did to Regina…"
"With good reason, perhaps. What made you so sure that I of all people would listen to what you have to say?"
"You're not as involved as she is. Malva and Regina go way back in History. You, however, you might have a different look on the situation. I want you to understand that, whatever happened to Regina was strictly business. I have a great respect for your boss, the problem is she's outdated. Even her old mentor understood what he had to do to keep his business going. Now, I'm a man of honour, I would fulfilled my part of the agreement had she accepted my deal. I helped the Green family, I can help yours… I want peace. Regina just complicated things a little bit. Call it a conflict of interests; I'm sure she'd put it that way." Walsh Sollozzo declared in ominous tone.
"What I want…" Robin began, coming back to his native language. "What is most important to me is that I have a guarantee no more attempts will made against her life."
"What more can I guarantee, Locksley? I'm the hunted one! I missed my chance! You think too much of me, kid. I'm not that clever. All I want is a truce." the mobster reasoned.
After a moment of silence, Robin breathed out and said:
"I need to go to the bathroom. May I?"
"You gotta go, you gotta go, Rob…" said Keith Nottingham in a mocking tone.
Robin got on his feet and was prepared to walk away when he felt a hand on his hip stopping him on his tracks. Sollozzo was searching him again.
"I searched him. He's clean" said the captain, absentmindedly.
"Don't take too long", Sollozzo said, not bothering to hide how irritated he was.
Was Robin glad he had no gun on him! He was equally glad that he was to have one soon enough. It was waiting for him.
He walked calmly towards the men's restroom, it was after the door was closed that he began his search for the planted gun. He found it behind the flush's water reservoir in the fourth stall. It was tapped to the wall and was rather easy to remove. He looked to his wrist watch. The next train would be passing by in less than two minutes. He wanted no dealings with Sollozzo, he was quite tired of hearing him talk. It was the last coup of a desperate man. His grievances would end very soon. About Nottingham, Robin couldn't help but feel exultant. It was as if God, in his merciful and ruthless way, had used Malva to give him a sign and a gun, to tell him his vengeance would come soon. The train was approaching.
He hid the gun in his pocket and went towards the table where he had been sitting with Sollozzo and Nottingham. They were eating their veal. Smelled delicious.
"Their last meal", Robin thought.
He sat on his chair and prepared to hear some more plaintive gibberish from Walsh Sollozzo'a mouth. Yet the sound never arrived to Robin's ears. His mind went blank. It was time. He heard the train approaching, more, it was now above them. He got up suddenly, reached for the gun in his pocket.
Marian.
Regina.
BANG!
It was done. Keith was laying on the floor, blood oozing out a hole in his neck, half of the contents of the table were on him and Sollozzo, was still sitting, eyes wide open in surprise, blood coming from two hole in his forehead. He did as Carola had told him. He made no eye contact with anyone present, he drop the gun and left calmly.
Upon his exit, there was a car waiting for him. Malva was driving and Roland and Henry were a sleep on the back. She drove without saying a word towards the airport. Not a word was spoken until check in was done. By then, the children were awake and watching the planes come and go from the window.
"I wish you and the boys a safe journey."
"Please, settle this mess for once and for all."
"I'll do my best, though it will be anything but easy."
"Take care of Regina for me" Robin asked, embracing the woman.
"I know. I will be with her as she had been with me all this time. You have everything?"
"When you arrive tomorrow morning, there will be a man named Enrico Molina waiting for you. Make sure that you give him this letter" Malva said putting a letter into his coat's pocket. "Most importantly, do as he says."
"Of course."
"Not get along, they'll be closing the boarding gate. I'll get in contact with you as soon as I can."
"Come along, children."
After a soft and brief goodbye hug from the children and watching them enter the plane, Malva abandoned the airport to join Regina in the hospital.
