We Must be the Killers – Chapter 21
Skylar stood by the bike rack outside of her school.
She'd hoped Scott would show up soon, even though she and her brother weren't on the best of terms she didn't want to walk into school alone that day.
It was her first day back since everything, and Lydia was still missing. She wasn't supposed to be around Allison and she still hadn't spoken to Isaac in over a week now.
A few upperclassman stared at her and then laughed amongst themselves as they walked past her and headed inside.
As if school wasn't bad enough already, now it seemed like all of Patrick's friends had it out for her. Rumors had spread like wildfire that she claimed he'd raped her, and not lots of students thought she was somehow involved in his murder.
Just another life ruining event all thanks to Peter Hale, even from beyond the grave he was still managing to torment her.
Checking the time on her phone she realized Scott must have been secretly meeting up with Allison before school somewhere.
Knowing she was on her own, she took a deep breath and swallowed hard, trying to hold her head high as she walked into the school.
Turning down the hallway she saw a memorial set up outside of Patrick's locker, and her nose crinkled in disgust. She was happy he was dead and she felt bad for thinking that.
A few of his male friends were adding pictures to the collage on his locker, she put her head down and hoped to be invisible to them but just a few steps past them she heard loud, fake dramatic coughing as one of them coughed out 'slut'.
She paused, and bit down on the inside of her cheek so hard she could taste blood.
Taking another deep breath she kept walking, with a plan to just get her books and run to her first period class.
But she stopped cold in her tracks when she saw someone had spray painted, 'killer' on her locker in bright red paint.
Looking over to where a few senior guys were standing and watching her she angrily yelled, "I didn't kill anyone!"
"Not what I heard." One of them said back, his voice gruff.
"Maybe you shouldn't believe everything you hear." She angrily said back, her blood was starting to boil.
Another guy crossed his arms over his chest and said, 'Well, I heard you're a crazy, pill popping whore and that seems pretty true."
A low growl escaped her lips and she threw her book bag down and charged him, knocking him down and landing on him as she raised up and punched him, feeling his nose crack under her fist.
He let out a groan of pain and one of his friends roughly grabbed her arm and pulled her up and pushed her back away from their wounded friend.
Her forehead collided with the metal front of the drinking fountain, but she hardly had time to react before one of them pulled her to her feet by her hair and yelled, "Crazy bitch!"
"Hey!" Let her go!" She heard Scott shout as he barreled down the hallway and protectively pushed everyone back away from his sister.
"What is going on out here?" Mr. Harris yelled as grabbed Scott to keep him from going after the older teenager who had –had Skylar by her hair.
"They attacked her." Scott defended as he shot the upperclassmen angry looks.
The one who Skylar had hit slowly rose to his feet holding onto his badly bleeding nose.
Looking around at the audience the scene had attacked, he yelled at everyone else to get to their classes.
"Skylar, what happened?" he asked, seeing her bruised and bleeding forehead.
Silently she pointed to her locker, facing the bright red spray-paint shine brightly from the dark blue surface.
After a pause, Mr. Harris let go of Scott and surveyed the situation and group of teens again.
"Okay." He said, as he looked at the 3rd upperclassman who hadn't actually been involved in the fight, but hadn't done anything to stop it. "You, go get the supplies from the janitor to clean this up. And I'll see you after school in detention for the rest of the week."
Nodding, he turned and left.
"Scott go to class." He ordered, it had only been moments ago he'd seen the teenager race past his classroom and as far as he could tell Scott hadn't been involved either.
"But…" Scott started to protest.
"Class, right now McCall, you're already failing as it is." He pointed out.
Skylar nodded at her brother who slowly took a few steps back, still undecided on if he was going to class or not.
Looking at the remaining three students, he focused his attention on the non-bleeding senior. "Go see the principal."
He nodded, but didn't leave yet.
"And you two are coming with me to the nurse, then the principal." He said. Mr. Harris' attention now focused solely on Skylar and the one she'd been fighting with.
Skylar looked at the senior who had said the mean things to her and angrily shook her head, "I don't need to see the nurse."
"You're bleeding." Harris reminded her with a slight eye roll in annoyance at her insubordinate behavior.
"Yeah because they threw me against the metal water fountain." She defended.
"Because you sucker punched me!" The senior angrily yelled back at her, with blood still pouring from his nose.
"Good, I hope your nose is broken." Skylar coldly responded.
"Stop it! Forget the nurse, you're both going to the principal." He said as he grabbed the senior by the back of his shirt collar and Skylar's arm.
Jerking her arm back she yelled, "Screw this! I'm out of here."
Scott watched helplessly as his sister left though the double doors at the end of the hallway, not looking back once.
Seeing that Scott hadn't gone to class like he'd been instructed, Mr. Harris said "Principal for you too McCall."

"I just got a call from Mr. Harrsis."Melissa said as she walked into her daughters room and sat down on the bed with her.
Skylar lay on her side facing away from her door and towards her bedroom window.
"I talked to him, and the school isn't going to take any action against you… yet." She said softly as she gently smoothed her daughter's hair down away from her face.
"I don't care if they do." She admitted.
Melissa frowned and looked down to her own lap, she didn't have a clue what to say to make her feel better.
"Honey, are you sure you don't want to talk to anyone about what happened?" She continued to question her.
"I had enough therapy in rehab, and it's not like we can even afford it." Skylar said, her voice barely over a whisper.
"If talking to someone will help you, then I'll do what it takes. Pick up more extra shifts, or look for a second job. I just, I don't know how to help you Skylar." Melissa admitted.
Raising up some and looking at her mom Skylar shook her head back and forth, immediately feeling guilty for causing her mom more stress.
"I'm sorry." She apologized.
When her mom gave her a confused look Skylar shrugged and continued, "I don't really know what I need to do to feel better either."
"Maybe we'll give it a little time, if things don't seem to feel any better we'll make an appointment for you." She offered.
"Okay, if that makes you feel better." Skylar agreed nodding, not wanting to cause her family anymore trouble and pain.
"The point is to make you feel better." Melissa reminded her with a small sigh.
"I'm sure I'll be okay, I just need a few days away from school or something." Skylar reasoned.
"I can call off for my shift tonight." She offered as she checked the time on her watch.
"No it's okay, I'll be fine." Skylar said managing a force smiled.
"You have a friend downstairs." Melissa said as she stood up and leaned down pressing a kiss to her teenage daughters forehead.
"Who is it?" Skylar asked shocked.
Everyone should have been in school, besides Lydia who was still missing.
"I'll call and check on you, on my break." She said as she turned and left her with an unanswered question.
Getting up and crossing the upstairs in her socked feet she followed her mom down the stairs to see Isaac standing in the middle of the living room.
"Isaac!" Skylar gasped, unable to hide her surprise.
"Hey, I left school as soon as I heard about… everything." He admitted, a look of concern on his face.
Melissa breathed out a small sigh of relief as she saw a genuine smile spread over Skylar's lips.
Rushing forward, Skylar wrapped her arms around him closing her eyes and appreciating the warm embrace as he hugged her back.
And just like that, it felt like the time they hadn't spoken never existed.
As she stepped back from the hug, she gave her mom a smile as she paused at the front door, letting her know that for the moment at least. She was okay.
Normally her mom would have made some comment about Isaac needing to go before it got too late, but lately very few things made Skylar happy. And if one of those things was Isaac, she wasn't going to interfere.
Once Melissa left, Skylar said, "You have no idea how happy I am to see you."
Cutting her off and feeling so guilty for cutting her out of his life, and not being there when she needed him the most Isaac said, "I'm so, so sorry for not being there for you. When you figured it out about my dad, I was just so freaked out. I didn't know how to act around you, so I just avoided you all together."
"I just wanted to help you." Skylar assured him, nodding in understanding.
"I think that's what freaked me out." He admitted after a pause.
Looking down to the floor, and then back to him she asked, "What do you mean?"
Tucking his hands in his jacket pocket he nervously shrugged as he said, "I don't know."
"Isaac?" Skylar asked, knowing he wasn't telling her something.
"No one has ever really cared enough to try or even want to help me. It's been a really long time since I've had a real friend." He finally admitted, hoping it didn't sound as lame as it did in his head.
"Isaac, you were there for me when on one else was. Not even my own family, you're so important to me and I would do anything to try and help you." She explained, noticing the smile on his face when she told him he was important to her.
It had been so long since he'd felt like he mattered to anyone. And he couldn't believe how close they had gotten.
Leaning back in she hugged him again, not wanting to let go.
When she was around her other friends and her family, even if someone was physically there with her, she still felt alone. But when Isaac was with her, she truly knew she wasn't alone anymore.
As she breathed in his familiar scent, her entire body tensed and her eyes opened.
"Are you okay?" Isaac asked her feeling the change in her.
Stepping back she immediately pulled his shirt up, revealing a bite mark on his side.
She gasped and let go, letting the fabric fall back as they both stared at each other wide eyed.
"Did… did Derek do this?" She finally was able to squeak out.
Before Isaac could answer she rolled her eyes and said, "Of course he did, because he's the alpha now."
"Skylar…"
"How could he do this? That bite could have killed you!" She shouted, angrily.
"I know, he told me." Isaac said loudly, just trying to get her to listen to him.
"He told you? Well, did he tell you how dangerous it is to be a werewolf right now with all the hunters in town?" She pushed.
"He told me everything, I knew the risks." Isaac explained to her, hoping she'd calm down.
"Then… why did you let him bite you?" she asked, trying to wrap her head around it.
If she could go back and keep Scott from getting bitten so she wouldn't have been turned also, she'd do it.
He was silent.
"Your dad?" she breathed out, pinning her eye shut.
"He makes me feel so weak, and helpless. Derek told me that I didn't have to feel like that anymore." He reasoned out loud.
Skylar silently turned and walked over to the couch and sat down.
Sitting down next to her Isaac said, "I would have given anything to not feel like that again. You don't know what he's like."
Skylar looked at him and she wanted to yell at him for taking the chance of dying from the bite. But she was also happy he was finally opening up to her.
And selfishly the thought of him being a werewolf put her at ease. She wouldn't have to be so worried about him defending himself now.
"I would have helped you." She argued, but he could tell by the look on her face she wasn't mad at him anymore.
"I know." He said softly.
After a pause Isaac said, "Derek told me that… you're in his pack…"
Skylar looked over at him, "Is that why you joined him?"
"No." He answered a little too quickly and then shyly admitted, "Not the whole reason…"
She felt her cheeks darken a little and she quickly looked back down to the coffee table.
Quickly regaining her composure she said "Yeah, I agreed to join him. But you can't tell anyone, Scott doesn't know yet."
When she didn't explain any further he asked, "Did Derek bite you too?"
"No, no one bit me. Peter said that it's a result of Scott and I being twins. His getting bit somehow altered my DNA and now I'm just a freak." She said shaking her head back and forth.
"I kind of knew. Once we were sure about your brother, I think I just knew…" He started to explain but she cut him off.
"That I was a some kind of freak?" she cut in.
"No!" He answered quickly before laughing and saying "I thought maybe you were a werewolf too."
"I didn't, well… not until Peter forced me to shift." Skylar said.
"Wait, what?" Isaac asked.
She closed her eyes and sighed, she'd forgotten it had been so long since they'd talked.
She quickly filled him in on how Peter had stabbed her and told her if she didn't shift, she'd die.
Anger coursed through his veins at the thought of someone hurting her.
Before he knew it, he was growling and his hands were balled up into tight fists.
"Isaac." Skylar said, trying to get through to him, but his breathing was growing increasingly ragged.
"Isaac!" she yelled louder as she placed her hand on his.
Slowly, his breathing returned to normal.
And he looked at her wide eyed, afraid he'd scared her.
"I'm sorry." He apologized as he stood up and started to walk away.
But Skylar quickly grabbed his arm and stopped him.
"It's okay, it's just going to take some getting used to. With your werewolf side… it heightens rage and aggression, but you have to control it." She warned, as she walked around and faced him.
He slowly nodded, forcing himself to look her in the eyes. He'd been afraid of the look she might be giving him, but he was relieved when the only look on her face was concern.
Shrugging she said, "I don't know a lot about this yet. My wolf side is different than yours, I'm not controlled by the moon. But I'm going to help you as much as I can, okay?"
He nodded, but still didn't say anything.
"Derek was born this way, he knows a lot more than we do. He said he can help me, and he turned you so he has to help you." Skylar continued to try and comfort him.
"Do you trust him?" Isaac asked her, his blue eyes locking with hers.
Skylar didn't even have to pause as she said, "No, I don't trust him. But right now, I have to believe in him."
Isaac nodded, he wasn't sure he trusted Derek either. But he did trust her.
Reaching down she grabbed his hand and said, "It doesn't matter if we trust him or not, at least we've got each other, right?"
"Yeah… we do." Isaac said softly.
It drove him crazy before when they're skin would touch, but now with everything heightened, it was an entirely different feeling and he wanted more.
Both of them were silent as they stood in the living room staring at each other in silence.
Skylar held her breath as she saw his gaze slowly fall to her lips, before he quickly looked down to the floor.
When they'd first started talking, she was just thankful to have someone in her corner that didn't think she was using again, or was crazy. But she hadn't really noticed him then as anything other than a friend.
But it was different now they were closer than ever before and he was the only person she really felt okay around.
She glanced down to the floor also, trying to gather her thoughts and figure out how she felt, but when she looked back up and their eyes locked she felt like her legs were made of Jell-O.
Leaning in she hesitated, not sure if she should kiss him or not.
Nervously she slowly parted her lips and was going to try and say something to break the silence, but he took her by surprise as he pressed his lips to hers.
Immediately she melted into the kiss and pulled his face closer to hers.
Only seconds later, he stepped closer pulling her against him, never breaking their kiss.
The perfect moment was broken as the door to the house opened.
Skylar spun around and stared at the entry way to the house
"Uh…" Scott breathed out, staring at them wide eyed as he could hear both of their hearts racing.
Biting down on her bottom lip and feeling her cheeks darken she said, "Uh… Isaac just came over to… check on me."
Scott couldn't find anything to say to her.
He'd expected to come home and find her locked in her room like she'd been doing lately, not kissing someone in their living room.
It made things even worse that he could hear their racing hearts.
"I would have knocked, but uh, I live here, so…" Scott said, back just as caught off guard as they were.
"I should probably go before my dad finds out I skipped the last half of the day." Isaac said, nervously as he looked at Skylar.
Nodding she said, "Be careful."
"I will." He assured her.
"Hi, Scott." He greeted as he started to walked past him towards the door.
"Isaac." Scott greeted back, still not sure what to say to them.
"I'll uh, I'll text you later." Isaac said looking back to Skylar.
"Or call me… you could always call me." She pointed out.
His eyes widened as he lingered in the doorway of the house.
"Okay, I'll call you then." He said.
"Okay." She agreed smiling.
Once Isaac was gone Scott said, "I rushed home after school to make sure you were okay after today, but… you seem better."
"Any news about Lydia?" she asked, changing the subject.
Scott frowned, he wanted to ask what had happened between her and Stiles. And why days after attending the dance with his best friend, she was now kissing someone else in their living room.
"No, still missing. But we'll find her, I promise." Scott said, deciding to let everything slide for the moment.
Nodding she brushed past him and headed up the stairs to her room while trying to slow her accelerated heartbeat.
