Chapter 21: Germany

The room buzzed with people as Finn slowly made her way towards the stage, dipping her head as she politely excused herself. Everyone around her laughed and talked merrily in a foreign language, carefully sipping the expensive champagne that filled their crystal glasses. Finn's high heels clicked against the floor, and she shifted the tight dress that hugged her hips. Loki had changed her into an almost black, dark green dress, which hugged her body in all the right places, and then proceeded to cascade down to the floor. The dress went off the shoulders, and the back had a large cut out that plunged down Finn's back. Finn had grimaced when she had first looked at herself.
"Could you make me look even more flashier?" Finn had said sarcastically.
Loki's grin had widened, "Let us try."
The result had been diamond earrings and a stunning necklace and bracelet to match. Finn also had made the mistake of telling him her love of wearing rings on her pinky and ring finger on each hand, which also resulted in more jewelry.
Finn moved her hand to her hair, brushing her swooping bangs from her eyes. At least Loki had thought her hair looked better up, except Loki had taken her simple bun and moved it to the side, the hair weaving beautifully together. And Finn wasn't sure when, but he also used his magic to fix her hair color.
However, Finn was starting to get sick of all the green.

Finn's black pumps gingerly stepped on the stage, and she wiggled a finger at one of the guitar players closest to her. His eyes flashed up and down Finn as he smiled and shuffled over to her.
"What can I do for you miss?"
Finn flashed him a smile, and leaned into his ear, and sang a soft, quick string of notes.
I'll be the lead singer now.
The well polished musician instantly nodded, and Finn felt a shiver go down her spin. She had never done that to a person before. It also took a moment to realize the players all had mics in their ears, and they nodded in unison as well. Apparently they heard her sing too.
The song the band has been playing came to an end, and the crowd turned and clapped with vigor. She walked up to the main microphone after whispering to the guitar player again, giving him more instructions. Finn inhaled deeply and closed her eyes. Just do what he said. Just do what he said. Get it over with.
Finn gnawed on the inside of her mouth nervously. Loki had told her to make the crowd calm, ignorant, but he never had told her why.
As the piano started up, Finn flashed her charming grin, and began to sing. She had chosen a song of her own creation, a soft and emotional ballad of a lost lover. The party seemed appropriate for such a song. Classy, beautiful, and elegant.
As Finn's softened voice crooned the audience into her full attention, her eyes flickered towards a grand curving staircase. Loki walked down the stairs with a graceful ease. Finn's eyes widened in surprise; Loki was wearing a beautifully tailored black suit, his hair cleanly slicked back, and a scarf hanging neatly on his chest. A black cane was lightly held in his right hand, clicking softly against the marble stairs.

Finn felt rather surprised. Loki looked…normal. If Finn hadn't known him, she would have thought he was just a tall, handsome man. With an ego Finn thought as her eyes followed the black cane.
The crowd stood watching her with smiles as Finn suddenly realized it, she thought Loki was attractive. Finn hastily turned her eyes away from Loki, to avoid his gaze, and so that her rampant thoughts wouldn't make the whole crowd stare too.
As Finn sang, the clicking of Loki's cane finally came to a short halt, his head turning towards her. Finn threw him a quick glance, smile wide as she sang to the crowd.
Loki grinned back at her, seeming pleased. Finn expected Loki to turn and walk away, but he seemed content to just sit and watch, his hands gently resting on top of his cane.

For an instant, her pale eyes met his icy ones, and Finn casually glanced away to peer back into the crowd. What is he doing? Finn thought to herself.

Finally Loki started to walk down a few larger steps, and approached a guard. Finn immediately focused on the guard he was approaching, and commanded him to ignore Loki and move away.
Loki stopped just before the guard, who casually turned, and walked away. Finn watched as Loki turned his head to give her an amused look, and then proceeded to walk towards the crowd of high spirited guests.

Suddenly Loki's hand flung out, and grabbed a seemingly random man, and threw him down onto a nearby stone table. The man looked at Loki in bewilderment, and Loki's hand dipped into his suit, and produced a long silver device.
Finn started to find it hard to focus, and moved her eyes away from Loki.
A small whirling sound caught Finn's ears, followed by a blood curling scream.
Finn snapped her head towards the sound, and watched as the man's body convulsed, the silver device hovering over his eye. Or in his eye, Finn couldn't tell.
The scream had taken Finn off guard, and she faltered in her song, breaking her connection with the crowd. The crowd's gasps and screams soon followed.
A dazed guard suddenly charged at Loki, who easily stepped away from the now still man, and smacked the guard away with his cane. The guards' body flew helplessly through the air and collided hard with the marble floor.

Loki turned his head to look at Finn, who was starting to feel flustered. She had one job, and she was blowing it. Finn tried to get the crowd's attention back, but Finn's mixed nerves rendered her useless.

Surprisingly, Finn didn't see any frustration on Loki's face. His hand beckoned her with a small movement as his other hand smacked another guard to the floor.
Flustered, Finn gathered her dress at the thighs and quickly ran towards Loki, jostling against the fleeing crowd. Now I'm glad for those ridiculous heel races with Serena, Finn thought with slight amusement as her heels hit the smooth floor with hard, loud clicks.
Finn found a quick pace and was at Loki's side in a few strides once she was free from the crowds. Even with six inch heels, Loki still seemed to tower her.
"I'm sorry, I did what I could." Finn immediately apologized, "Then again, you didn't bother telling me you were—" Finn's sentence trailed away as her eyes drifted to the man's still body laying on the stone.
Mouth open and contorted, blood dripped down from one of his eye sockets, the flesh torn around where his eye should have been.
A cold hand took hold of Finn's chin, driving it away from the gruesome scene.
Finn started at Loki with wide, horrified eyes.

"You weren't supposed to see that." Loki said coolly.
Finn swallowed, "Well, I did."
Loki sighed, and dropped his hand away to bring it around to Finn's back. His hand felt starkly cold against her hot skin as his hand shifted to steer Finn away from the stone table, and towards the gold glass doors to the building's entrance.
"It won't happen again." Loki said in a soft voice to Finn's ear, his eyes bouncing down for a moment, "Have I mentioned how divine you look?"
Flattening her mouth, Finn gave Loki an irritated look, "Gee, ya' didn't."

Loki looked hurt, "I do mean that."
His serious tone made Finn uncomfortable, "Yeah well, thanks. You look ok yourself."
Finn didn't dare look at Loki, but she felt him grin.

"It is a shame we must change." Loki's normal, confident voice spoke up, and he strode in front of Finn.
A golden glow surrounded Loki as he strode forward, his clothes melting away to reveal him in full amour, including a golden helmet with two curving horns protruding from the front. As Finn walked quickly behind him, she slowed down only to realize she was glowing gold herself. The dress and heels seemed to disappear as fine armor replaced it. The armor looked similar to what Loki had given her before, but more elaborate and refined, with a black flowing cape that cascaded down her shoulder with a powerful elegance.

Finn held her hands out and twisted her arms in awe, then quickly gathered herself and approached Loki.
It took a moment for Finn to register the scene before her. Multiple armor clad clones of Loki surrounded a terrified crowd, with Loki at its head. Finn's boots came to a halt, leaving room between her and Loki, deciding to hang back.
Crowd screaming, Loki's voice boomed out with a commanding air, "Kneel before me!"
The crowd didn't seem to mind him, and Loki turned his head back to Finn, calling her with a movement of his eyes.
Finn hesitantly came forward towards Loki, who extended his hand, which was received with reluctance.
Loki shouted this time, "I said kneel!"

The crowd responded as his golden scepter slammed into the ground, and everyone flinched, unsure if they should obey or not.
Loki's face had a smirk across it as he spoke, "Finn, why don't you persuade them?"
Every eye fell onto Finn, and she stared back in horror. Loki's hand tightened around Finn's.
You're just making them kneel. That's it. Kneeling. Finn took her hand away from Loki, and slipped her hand to her right thigh, drawing out her golden flute.
There was no way Finn could bring herself to sing. The tension in the air almost felt crippling as Finn turned to the petrified crowd, and brought the flute to her lips.

Finn flew her fingers over the cool metal, producing a quick succession of notes, Kneel.
The crowd knelt in unison immediately.
Feeling as if Finn was about to pass out, she brought the flute down, suddenly wishing she had commanded the crowd not to be afraid.
Loki extended his hands out to the crowd as he spoke, their terrified eyes watching his every move.

"Is not this simpler? Is this not your natural state?" he paused, sweeping his arms out, "It's the unspoken truth of humanity, that you crave subjugation. The bright lure of freedom diminishes your life's joy in a mad scramble for power, for identity." his sneer grew wider," You were made to be ruled. In the end, you will always kneel."

Eerie chills shot up Finn's arms as she watched Loki in horror. Was this it? He really wanted to rule over everyone here on Earth? It felt preposterous to think about, yet his words felt powerful and real.
Blood frozen, Finn stood in utter stillness as a lone, old man stood up in the middle of the crowd.
"No, not to men like you." his German accent was strong.
Loki turned his head in amusement, "There are none like me."
Finn's eyes watched Loki carefully as the old man spoke again, "There will always be men like you."

Something dark flashed across Loki's face, his eyes vivid in the dim night lighting.
"Then let this man be an example." Loki said with a mocking amusement as he stepped forward, his scepter aimed at the man.
Finn finally let herself move, her arm stretched out, "Loki, don't!"
As soon as the sentence left her mouth, Loki fired his scepter at the man, and in a flash, the bolt bounced back to knock Loki to the ground.
Finn's eyes went wild as she watched Captain America stand up, clad in red, white, and blue, walk forward towards Loki.
"You know, last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing above everybody else, we ended up disagreeing." Captain America spoke with a clear voice.
So that's where we are…Finn thought.

Loki slowly pulled himself up from the ground, his face masked with anger. "If it isn't the soldier." Loki laughed as he brought himself up, and Finn finally jumped forward, steadying his arm. He gave Finn a short smirk, tuning his head back to the Captain," A man out of his own time."
Captain America's face stayed serious, "I don't think I'm the one out of time."
Behind Captain America appeared to be some kind of black plane or helicopter, with a red headed pilot. Finn felt a weight drop in her stomach. Is that the woman I had stabbed? It felt as though it was ages ago, but somehow Finn figured the woman wouldn't be forgiving.
A massive intimidating gun flipped out from the bottom of the black ship and aimed at the two of them, a woman's voice overhead, "Drop your weapons and stand down."
Loki immediately pulled his arm back and fired his scepter at the ship, which nimbly dodged. "On your guard now, Finn." Loki said quickly, as Captain America's shield flew into Loki's chest.
The crowd screamed ad dispersed as Finn dove away from the Captain and Loki. The two become a flurry of hard swings and parries, each knocking the other back skillfully.
Loki's scepter finally brought the Captain down, its end brought hard to the Captain's skull. "Kneel." Loki hissed through his teeth, but Captain America broke from Loki, "Not today," and kicked him back. Loki followed by knocking the Captain back onto the ground.

Music seemed to blare out from nowhere, and if Finn was correct, it was ACDC. Finn turned her head to the sky to see Iron Man dipping down, and firing at Loki, knocking him clean to the ground.
Iron Man landed and held his arms out, the metal clicking and opening to reveal more weapons and missiles at the ready. Captain America approached behind him as Iron Man spoke, "Make a move, reindeer games."

Iron man turned his head towards Finn, and flicked his head up, "You ok kid?"
Finn looked down, suddenly realizing her daggers were in her hands, knuckles white from squeezing the pommels so hard. When the hell did I do that?
Wordlessly, Finn looked to Tony, and then quickly sheathed her knives, hands shaking.
Finn's eyes moved to Loki, who held his hands up, and glowed golden as his armor disappeared. Loki did the same to Finn, her glorious armor dissipating into her previous leather and green clad outfit.
Tony's Iron mask flicked upwards as he walked up to Finn, Captain America standing with his arms crossed in front of Loki.

"What are the odds meeting you here?" Tony's comment sounded like a pickup line as he stopped in front of Finn. His sarcasm hid his concern, and surprise.
"Probably not good." Finn relied with a dry, cracked voice.
Tony took a step closer, "Are you sure you're ok?"
Finn stared at Tony, aware of Loki's watchful eye on her, shook her head ever so slightly, and then looked down.
Before Finn said anything else, the red haired woman had landed the black ship in the concrete courtyard, and was striding towards them.
Tony turned his head to see the woman, and spoke out her name, "Romanoff."
Know knowing her name, Finn shrunk back from the woman's view, stepping closer to Tony.

Tony turned back to Finn, "You afraid?"
Finn kept her voice quiet, "Well, uhm. I did kind of stab her."
Tony's eyes widened, "That was you?" He looked back at Romanoff, who was busy picking Loki up with Captain America, a gun glued to his head.
Loki's eyes stayed on Finn as he was lead away to the ship's open deck.
"Not a very good enemy to make there kid." Tony said.
"Yeah well, I seem to be good at that lately." Finn muttered, mostly to herself.

"Come on; let's get you out of here." Tony's metal hand lightly gripped Finn, but she didn't move.
"No, no. Just, just let me go." Finn suddenly said, feeling fear in her voice.
"Hey, we caught him, you'll be fine now." Tony said, turning his body and resting his other hand on the opposite shoulder.
"No, S.H.E.I.L.D wants me. They think I did something." Finn felt guilt pang at her. That wasn't the whole truth now. Tony's face looked troubled for a moment.
"Hey, kid, we'll figure it out. Don't worry, ok?" Tony squeezed Finn's shoulders reassuringly, flashing Finn a crooked smile.
Finn stared up at Tony, her eyes felt prickly, "You promise? I mean, I own up to what I did but—" Tony's finger stopped Finn's rambling, "I promise."
Finn let herself exhale shakily; at least one person was on her side.

Tony's hand fell to Finn's shoulder blade as he maneuvered her forward. Finn felt her stomach spinning as they walked towards the ship, Romanoff standing at the open deck, arms crossed and foot tapping.
"Just don't look her in the eye." Tony mocked in Finn's ear.
Finn gave a short chuckle, her flat expression returning as they approached the opening.

"Hey, Tony?" Finn said quickly, almost in earshot of Romanoff.
"Yeah kid?"
"Don't call me kid."
Tony grinned, slapping Finn on the back, "Ok, honey bunches."
