The Life and Times of Kurt Hummel

Season 3, Episode 21: THE WAY HOME

21/22- Kurt and Blaine make plans for their future after Blaine's graduation, but Blaine also has an extra favour to ask. Afterwards, Blaine visits a friend to make a promise he never had the chance to make before.

Kurt was looking through copy after copy of old Vogue magazines when Rachel walked in. Kurt looked at the clock in surprise.

"What's up? It's two in the morning." Kurt said. Rachel took a magazine and sat with him.

"Can't sleep. It happens once every few weeks; has done ever since...well, you know." Rachel said.

"Since Finn died." Kurt said and Rachel nodded. Kurt pulled Rachel into a hug.

"I love you, Rachel Berry." Kurt said.

"I love you too." Rachel replied. The broke apart.

"So you're really getting into this whole Vogue thing, huh? What about NYADA?"

"Oh, I love NYADA and my hours at Vogue are being worked around my lessons. And I'll love NYADA even more next year when Blaine's here. We're meeting up tomorrow to book his train here together and I can't wait!" Kurt said.

"Oh, you two are so sweet!" Rachel exclaimed and the two laughed. They stooped as they heard a voice coming from a nearby room.

"Hummelberry, shut the hell up or I will slap you so hard you'll be thin enough to fit in those magazines!" Santana shouted.

-THE LIFE AND TIMES OF KURT HUMMEL-

Kurt walked into The Lima Bean and was immediately filled with fond memories of things that had happened there. He smiled as he saw Blaine sat waiting for him at their regular table and approached him. His heart flew when he saw Blaine's face light up when he saw him and they leaped into each other's arms and kissed passionately.

"Hey." Kurt whispered.

"Hi." Blaine whispered back as they both sat down.

"So...coffee, then visit dad's house where we book tickets and make out?" Kurt said.

"Sounds like a plan." Blaine chuckled.

"I can't believe it; you're FINALLY gonna be in New York. We'll be living in the same place again, and...living together. As in, moving in. Together." Kurt said.

"I know. I can't wait." Blaine said, taking Kurt's hand.

"You'll finally be where you belong. In New York. With me." Kurt added.

"I am nervous though, about leaving home."

"Blaine, you're not leaving home, you're coming home. Home is where the heart is." Kurt said.

"True," Blaine replied, "And my heart is definitely, undoubtedly with you."

"And...BOOKED!" Kurt said as he and Blaine finished booking Blaine's train ticket online.

"It's nice to see young men so organised." Carole said with a smile as she watched them with a cup of tea in her hand.

"Yeah, you two certainly are planning ahead." Burt said.

"I just like knowing everything's sorted." Kurt said. He couldn't keep the smile off of his face. He looked at Blaine and could see something was bothering him.

"What's up?" Kurt asked.

"I, uh...I have a favour to ask you. Well you, Rachel and Santana, actually." Blaine said.

"Okay?"

"Well, I was hoping that, if you guys are all okay with it, that Sam could move in with us too." Blaine said.

"Sam?"

"Yeah, he's going to New York to get a modelling contract. What do you say?" Blaine asked.

"Well...I like Sam, so it's fine by me. I'll call Rachel and Santana now." Kurt said and got up and went to the kitchen to phone the girls. He was fine with Blaine's request, but there was still a hint of worry in him. Kurt wasn't sure how the others would react.

"So, how are you feeling?" Burt asked Blaine.

"I'm a lot better, thanks. It's been a tough year, for all of us." Blaine said.

"But here we are." Carole said softly with a gentle smile, clearly thinking of her beloved son. Burt took her hand.

"I'm proud of you, kiddo. I'm glad you and Kurt worked things out. I'll miss you when you go to New York too, though." Burt said.

"Well, you can both visit whenever you like." Blaine said with a smile. At that moment, Kurt walked back in.

"Rachel said she'd love to get to know Sam better, so it's a big yes from her. Santana also said yes as she can't wait to insult his trouty mouth on a daily basis. She's already started work on a list of insults. So, you can tell Sam the good news and book him a ticket." Kurt said. Blaine kissed him.

"I love you so much." He said and ran out excitedly, getting out his phone to call Sam. Kurt watched him go with a huge smile. He blushed when he saw Burt and Carole staring at him with big smiles.

"Oh, shush." Kurt said and the adults laughed.

That night, Kurt and Blaine went to Breadstix to have a goodbye meal. While they weren't big fans of the food, they were big fans of the monthly karaoke night that was taking place.

"I can't believe the next time I'll see you in person it will be your graduation ceremony." Kurt said.

"I know. It's crazy." Blaine said.

"So, how did Sam react when you called him?" Kurt asked.

"He was over the moon. He really is grateful; he's bought you all thank you gifts already. Even Santana." Blaine said and Kurt smiled.

"Bless him."

"Okay guys, next up for the karaoke is Blaine Anderson!" A waitress announced and everyone applauded. Kurt looked at Blaine in shock as Blaine kissed him on the cheek and walked up to the stage.

"Sneaky devil." Kurt whispered.

"Hey everyone, I'm Blaine and this is one of my favourite songs and it means a lot to me right now." Blaine said as the music began. Blaine started singing as the atmosphere in the restaurant grew very relaxed. Kurt watched his boyfriend sing, filled with pride.

"I have often dreamed
Of a far off place
Where a great warm welcome
Will be waiting for me
Where the crowds will cheer
When they see my face
And a voice keeps saying
This is where I'm meant to be

I will find my way
I can go the distance
I'll be there someday
If I can be strong
I know every mile
Will be worth my while
I would go almost anywhere
To feel like I belong

I am on my way
I can go the distance
I don't care how far
Somehow I'll be strong
I know every mile
Will be worth my while
I would go most everywhere to find where I belong

Down an unknown road
To embrace my fate
Though that road may wander
It will lead me to you
And a thousand years
Would be worth the wait
It might take a lifetime
But somehow I'll see it through

And I won't look back
I can go the distance
And I'll stay on track
No I won't accept defeat
It's an uphill slope
But I won't lose hope
Till I go the distance
And my journey is complete
But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part
For a hero's strength is measured by his heart

Like a shooting star
I will go the distance
I will search the world
I will face its harms
I don't care how far
I can go the distance
Till I find my hero's welcome
Waiting in your arms...

I will search the world
I will face its harms
Till I find my hero's welcome
Waiting in your arms."

The song ended and everyone applauded. Blaine smiled in embarrassment.

"Thank you, and for the next song I'd like to invite the love of my life onto the stage to sing with me. So everyone welcome Kurt Hummel to the stage!" Blaine said and everyone cheered again as Kurt sheepishly took to the stage and whispered in Blaine's ear.

"I hate you."

"No you don't." Blaine replied with a smile and looked at the waitress, who started the music and handed Kurt his own microphone. Blaine started to sing and Kurt smiled as he recognised the song.

"Another summer day
Has come and gone away
In Paris and Rome
But I wanna go home
Mmmmmmmm."

Kurt then sang, taking Blaine's hand.

"May be surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel all alone
I just wanna go home
Oh, I miss you, you know."

Blaine sang again.

"And I've been keeping all the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
'I'm fine baby, how are you?'
Well I would send them but I know that it's just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that."

Kurt sang.

"Another aeroplane
Another sunny place
I'm lucky, I know
But I wanna go home
Mmmm, I've got to go home."

The two sang together.

"Let me go home
I'm just too far from where you are
I wanna come home."

Kurt sang again.

"And I feel just like I'm living someone else's life
It's like I just stepped outside
When everything was going right
And I know just why you could not
Come along with me
This was not your dream
But you always believed in me."

Blaine sang.

"Another winter day has come
And gone away
In either Paris or Rome
And I wanna go home
Let me go home."

The two boys sang together again.

"And I'm surrounded by
A million people I
Still feel alone
And let me go home
Oh, I miss you, you know

Let me go home
I've had my run
Baby, I'm done
I gotta go home
Let me go home."

Kurt sang, looking deep into Blaine's eyes.

"It'll all be all right."

Blaine smiled as he sang back.

"I'll be home tonight."

The two boys sang together again.

"I'm coming back home ."

The song ended and everyone applauded loudly as Kurt pulled Blaine in for a kiss. They didn't care if anyone saw them anymore. They were in love, and no one could do anything about it.

Kurt kissed Blaine again as they stood next to Kurt's train back to New York.

"I'll see you soon." Kurt said.

"Text me when you're back." Blaine said and kissed Kurt's hand. Kurt smiled and walked on the train, taking a seat by the window. He blew Blaine a kiss as the train started moving. Blaine walked off, thinking about how great of a night he'd had. Kurt opened the window next to him and leant out.

"BLAINE DEVON ANDERSON, I LOVE YOU!" He shouted at the top of his voice and waved again as the train disappeared from view. Blaine saw everyone staring at him as he waved back and laughed.

Blaine walked swiftly through the cold morning air to his destination. He stopped as his phone buzzed.

'Can I walk with you to school today? –Sam'

Blaine quickly texted back.

'Sure. Wait for me outside my house, I'll be there soon. Just need to see an old friend. –B'

Blaine stopped at the sight he was looking for and sighed as he looked down at the stone in front of him.

"I miss you, you know." Blaine said. He leant down and looked at the lettering lovingly sculpted onto the tablet.

'FINN CHRISTOPHER HUDSON

1994-2013'

Blaine looked at all the fresh flowers around the grave, admiring the work gone into them by Carole, who changed them at least once a week.

"I've wanted to promise you something for a while now, but now my future in New York is secure I finally have the guts to make it. I know you always looked out for Kurt, and that's amazing, and I promise you I'll look after him just as well as you did. I will, Finn, I promise from the bottom of my heart. Hope you're having fun up there. I bet the angels are getting pretty good at playing the drums." Blaine said and smiled at the framed photo of Finn in the middle of the flowers.

"Love ya, buddy."

Blaine looked up to the sky and smiled.

In New York, Kurt was doing the same, thinking about how the future he'd dreamt of for the past year was nearly a reality.

What could possibly go wrong?

NEXT TIME...

"Goodbye, Kurt Hummel."

Kurt hugged Will tight with a proud smile on his face.

"Slow down, lie down..."

Kurt's vision of the future quickly started to fade away.
