The sun felt warm on Wendy's face as her eyes traced up the glass of Queen Consolidated and back down. White-collared people hustled all around her; all seemingly having important places to go. The men and some women wore suits, while the rest of the women were dressed much like Felicity. A large percentage of them either held a briefcase in hand or were chattering away on a cellphone. A stark contrast in this environment was Wendy. She wore her much loved and worn grey pea coat with jeans and a plain t-shirt underneath.
The business district was not a place Wendy frequented. Actually, she'd prefer to avoid these types of areas all together. Just the thought of dressing up fancy, sitting at a desk, in front of a computer everyday made Wendy feel ill. A uniform had become her best friend at an early age; first at that fast food joint as a teenager, then the "cool" pants of the Special Forces and finally simple nurse scrubs. The simplicity of a uniform was convenient and left time for other, more important things. At least in Wendy's opinion; she was sure Felicity would disagree.
And Felicity was the reason Wendy was currently standing outside of Queen Consolidated. Wendy had called Felicity wanting to meet up. Felicity had suggested lunch, which lead Wendy to offer to bring some take-out for them to share at her work. Now here she stood, outside Queen Consolidated a bag of Greek take-out in hand, an odd feeling in her stomach. It certainly wasn't about seeing Felicity. Maybe it was from the last experience she had in this building or maybe it was the fact she might run into Oliver?
After a deep breath, Wendy pulled open one of the large glass doors and entered the lobby. Felicity had instructed her to visit the security desk, that she'd let them know Wendy was coming. After the guard eyed Wendy up and down, he issued her a visitor's badge and instructed her to take the elevator right to the top. Wendy didn't tell him she knew exactly where she was going. That she'd been there before only under very different circumstances. Stepping out of the elevator, Wendy turned to her right. Her eyes fell first on Felicity sitting at her desk, typing away on her keyboard and then they swept over the rest of the hallway and office. Most impressive was the view of Starling through the floor to ceiling windows behind Felicity.
Wendy pointed past Felicity. "I can't believe you don't sit facing that view." She then couldn't help but glance over her shoulder into Oliver's office. The doors were closed, but since they were glass, Wendy could see Oliver having what appeared to be a standoff with a brunette woman. Her stomach clenched slightly when her eyes reached the spot where she'd woken up after being drugged by Count Vertigo. "It's nice to finally see this place through normal eyes… you know, not when you've been drugged and kidnapped by a crazy man."
"Oh thank god." Felicity shot up out of her seat, heals clicking towards Wendy. "I thought you might have decided not to come and I am tired of listening to those two."
Felicity took the take-out bag from Wendy and gestured for Wendy to sit in the chair opposite to her own. Putting the bag down on her desk, one by one, Felicity started removing each container and setting each one down between them. All the while mumbling about glass not being good enough for sound proofing. Wendy divvied up the plates, utensils, and napkins, then sat down. They both took a minute to dish out food from the multiple containers; the smell of garlic and oregano filling the office space.
"That's Isabel I take it?" asked Wendy. Felicity nodded in reply. Wendy leaned into Felicity and lowered her voice. "It's hard to believe they slept together. Does she always look like she's got a stick up her ass?"
Felicity snorted. "Yes, yes she does." For a short moment, Felicity's eyes lingered on Oliver and Isabel; her body stiffened. Eyes coming back to Wendy she relaxed, but Wendy noticed a flushness on her cheeks. "How are things with Detective Lance?"
The fork stopped on the way to Wendy's mouth. She looked down as she replied. "Great. He surprised me last night with a key to his apartment."
"That is great." Felicity was smiling, but her brow was raised. "So why don't you look thrilled? Wait, it's not because of me right?"
That made Wendy smile, but the smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "No. He's not expecting me to move in right away and I know you'll be okay when I do." Wendy played with the salad on her plate. "I'm not sure I'm doing the right thing by keeping what I'm doing a secret. Why does Oliver? I assume his family doesn't know."
"He's protecting them; Moira, Thea, Laurel. Once they know, they're a part of it. There's no grey area." Felicity placed her elbows on the desk and leaned towards Wendy. "I can't tell you what to do. I'm not even sure there is a right answer, but before you get in too deep, I think you need to make a choice one way or the other."
They both cleaned off their plates. Twirling her fork in her fingers, Wendy chewed on the inside of her mouth. Felicity's points were helpful and gave Wendy more to consider; she was also right. Wendy needed to make a choice and stick with. The distraction, the worry, it could kill her while out hunting in the Glades. Lying to Quentin felt wrong; it continues to make Wendy feel sick each and every time. And she can't remember how many times she has told Felicity that lying and relationships just don't mix. On the other hand, he'd almost lost his job when his superiors found out he'd worked with the Arrow. It'd look bad enough, if she was caught, that he was dating her, but it would be so much worse if he'd known. Considering Wendy had just finishing eating, her stomach felt empty.
"I've made a lot of hard decisions in the past, but none like this." Wendy laughed and shook her head. "I never thought I'd even be in this position."
Felicity leaned back in her chair and crossed her legs. "In the end it will all work out."
Sure it would all work out. Wendy agreed, but work out for the good or work out for the bad, that was the bigger question. Wendy truly wanted to believe it would all work out for the better, but the heaviness surrounding her made it hard to stay positive. Wendy decided that she needed to start making a list of the pros and cons maybe that would help ease her mind.
Sitting up straighter, Wendy glanced over at Oliver then back at Felicity. "Can I inquire about you know who's meeting with Laurel?"
"Detective Lance's worried isn't he?" Felicity met Wendy's eyes. "Stupid question. Laurel, she really thinks somethings up with Blood. Asked, you know who, to look into a case number. She also mentioned that Blood and Cyrus Gold, they were friends."
A gasp escaped Wendy. "Blood was friends with that maniac."
"Apparently he was a preacher at the orphanage Blood grew up in."
Wendy sighed. "It's doesn't necessarily mean Blood is involved in anything hinky, but it's something."
Starting to clean up their lunch, Felicity looked over at Oliver, who was still in his office with Isabel. "The case number should clear it up either way. Only problem, there's no digital copy. There's just a hard copy and it's located in the city archives."
"I'm sure that won't be a problem for you know who," said Wendy with a wink.
Felicity paused, her eyes meeting Wendy's briefly. "Yeah… it shouldn't be a problem."
Wendy got up from her seat and walked to the window. She narrowed her eyes, studying Felicity as she walked by. Wendy knew Felicity was holding back. "What are you leaving out?"
Felicity's shoulders dropped and she played with a piece of her ponytail. "You need a key card to get into the city archives."
"A key card that an assistant district attorney would have." Wendy watched Felicity nod and then looked over to Oliver. "He'll keep her safe."
A deep breath was released from Felicity and her whole body returned to a more relaxed appearance. There really was no point in fighting it, Laurel would get the information she wanted one way or another; Wendy had already stated that to Quentin. Oliver would at least keep her safe. Of course there was no way in hell Wendy was telling Quentin his daughter would be doing some break and entering with the Arrow. If all went well, which is would, no one would ever have to know. It'd be over tonight. And they might find the answers Quentin's been looking for since his partner's cold blooded death.
Speaking of Oliver, he and Isabel appeared to be finished up their meeting, if that's what you could call it. Isabel stepped into the meeting room that was off of Oliver's office and Oliver was headed their way. That was Wendy's queue to head out. Wendy pulled herself from the amazing view of Starling and embraced Felicity, thanking her for lunch and whispering in her ear to keep her informed of their progress on Blood. They said their good-byes and Wendy moved towards the elevators. Half way there, Wendy's stomach dropped; she forgotten to ask Felicity something, something Wendy felt would be good for Felicity.
Turning on her heals, Wendy yelled out to Felicity. "How'd you feel about me setting you up with someone?"
All kinds of things happened at once, all making Wendy feel more gratified than they probably should have. Wendy hadn't noticed that Oliver had already made it out of his office. Damn he moved fast. Now, she noticed. Felicity's face was all kinds of pink; her eyes darting from Wendy to Oliver. Oliver lips were pressed flat and he was trying to not make eye contact with either Wendy or Felicity.
Wendy held back a grin at Oliver's discomfort as she didn't like that she'd put Felicity on the spot in front of Oliver. "You can let me know later."
Taking a deep breath, Felicity glanced at Oliver. Turning back to Wendy, Felicity held herself taller. "No, no need. That sounds good."
As Wendy replied with an "okay", she watched Oliver clench and unclench his fist. It was written all over him – his feelings for Felicity, but she couldn't, shouldn't wait forever for him. At the very least, Wendy felt Felicity should see who else was out there. What could it hurt? Felicity was still young. On the elevator ride down, Wendy realized she'd now have to speak with Cole. Wendy knew he was also single, now she just had to hope he'd also be interested.
From Queen Consolidated Wendy headed to work, then per usual, was off to the diner. On the way, Wendy received a text message from Felicity. Got it done. File was empty. Empty? Wendy blinked at her phone. Great. More questions than answers. Felicity's reply came almost instantly. Just another day. At least now, when Wendy arrived at the diner, she was able to tell Quentin that Laurel was okay, and that she wouldn't have to elaborate. But, she did tell Quentin that he better keep an eye on Laurel as she'd hit another brick wall. The news went over as well as expected, but Wendy was there for Quentin.
