Long Time, No See
Chapter 20
The wedding was six weeks away and I was thoroughly exhausted.
We'd decided to build a house since we couldn't find one we liked. We bought 10 acres and the house would be right in the middle. There was a small creek that would run through our backyard and be a beautiful backdrop for cuddling by the fire-pit at night.
It was going to grand, that's for sure. Between Edward's taste and my requirements it would be a small mansion. It would have two master suites, one upstairs and one downstairs, five bedrooms, three and a half baths, a huge eat-in gourmet kitchen, library, office, game/playroom, formal dining room, living and family rooms and a year round pool, home gym area. Just looking at the layout was exhausting, it was modern in style and of course state of the art everything.
"Bella, I can't wait until our honeymoon." Edward wrapped his arms around me kissing my neck.
"One that you still won't tell me about." I sighed.
"You're going to be so relaxed you won't really care." He squeezed me tightly.
"I can't believe I'm stepping away for a month." I shook my head.
"You deserve it! You work yourself to death. You're so stressed, no matter how many massages I give, you're still tense. I'm surprised you don't have high blood pressure." He said seriously.
"Edward…" I warned, every time this came up we got into an argument and I'd go back to my mostly empty apartment.
"I'm sorry, I just hate the thought of you working so hard, there's no need for it. I make plenty of money…" he started again and I pushed away.
"I'm not doing this now Edward, please. I've got to get ready for work." I walked away, locking the bathroom door so he would know how pissed I was.
Work was stressful the next couple of weeks, between my cases and last minute wedding plans and fittings I was practically sleeping standing up.
"Bella, are you OK?" Aro asked.
"Yeah, just stressed. Everything is happening so fast." I put my head in my hands. I'd confided in Aro quite a lot. He'd become a father figure to me.
"Bella, I know this job is stressing you and putting strain on you and Edward, I see it when you first walk in every morning." Aro patted my head.
"Look child, how about you handle the cases from home until the wedding is over, only coming in for briefings and meetings, two times a week, maybe three. And no more of these long days, unless you decide to take on a big case." He smiled.
"Aro, that wouldn't be fair. I can't do that to the other employees, what kind of example would that set?" I asked.
"You'll be setting the example I want you to set. You'll still be putting in plenty of hours at home, I want you and Edward to have a fresh start and you'll need to be at home when you start having babies. AND, I know you said it wouldn't be soon, but you never know. Don't put your life on hold for this job, especially when you have someone who loves you as much as Edward." He squeezed my shoulder and walked out.
Two days until the wedding. The house was done and everything would be moved in and decorated while we were away.
I was staying at my mom's house for the next two days and was upset and happy about that fact.
Edward and I had gotten into a huge argument over me not telling him about Aro's proposal.
He'd found out at the rehearsal dinner, Aro and him were talking and Aro asked him what he thought about it. Edward told him he loved the idea and then rounded on me when we'd got home.
"Thanks for making me look like and ass in front of your boss tonight!" Edward snapped.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"Exactly!" he held up his hands as he shouted.
"Look, I'm not doing this tonight. After tomorrow we won't see each other for two day and I'd like to spend tonight making love to my husband to be." I stepped forward to rub his arm, he stepped back.
"Aro told me about his offer for you to work from home, were you seriously going to turn him down?" he asked.
"I don't know Edward. I was still thinking on it. It would be a good thing when we start a family, someday." I shrugged.
"Bella, we're getting married, I want to spend time with you! Anyone else is a plus, I'm not even thinking kids right now." He snapped.
"Edward, why do I have to give up MY job?" I yelled this time.
"That's the thing, you're not giving up anything accept for some commute time and long hours, AWAY from home. I thought getting married you'd want to be with me, guess I was wrong. I'll see you at the altar, if you don't have anything more pressing to do." He sighed and walked out.
I was all dressed and ready, waiting for Emmett to come in and walk me down the aisle.
"Bella, Edward is a mess right about now. Keeps mumbling about how he fucked up, how your marriage is ruined before it begins. What the fuck is he talking about?" Emmett asked angrily.
"We had an argument about an offer Aro made me and I didn't tell him, only because I wasn't ready to accept the offer yet. I'm not ready to have kids, so I was just going to work until we got pregnant." I shook my head.
"Look, do you love him?" Emmett asked seriously.
"Yes, of course I do." I said surprised.
"Well then the music is starting, let's march your ass down the aisle to your husband and you'll have a great honeymoon and come back with everything resolved." Emmett hugged me close then offered me his arm, walking me towards my future.
