Chapter 21:

The tan truck pulled into the short driveway and the engine cut off quickly. Toby fished his phone from his pocket and opened up his messages. Scrolling down to the last text box on the screen, he pressed his finger on the box and waited for the delete prompt to appear.

"In case she asks to see my phone." Toby muttered to himself as he watched the conversation disappear.

Slipping the phone back into his pocket, he leaned his head back against the rest. The last couple of days had been hectic for him, Eva questioning his whereabouts and his workload doubling in cases. The only peace he got was when he finally sent Spencer a text, not able to keep from talking to her another day.

'Spence, its Toby. I know you said we needed to take a break, but it is killing me not being able to talk to you these last few days. I miss you.' He typed on his phone and quickly looked around the office before sending the message.

Five minutes later, his phone buzzed beside one of his case flies.

'I miss you too. Talk to Eva yet?" She replied.

'Talk? No. Scream? Yes. It is going to take me longer than a week to get through to her Spence. Are you working tonight?'

'I might be, why you in need of a drink and a dance from a lovely lady?"

'Only if you're offering to be the lovely lady for me. ;)'

'Sorry to dissapoint, Jamie is most likely going to have me on the bar for the next couple of days, at least until the swelling goes down. I'm sure I can find some little lady in here who would love to give you a dance.'

'Unless she has brown hair, brown eyes and answers to the name of Spencer, I'll pass.'

'We'll see about that. :) I'll see you in a few hours handsome.'

Toby shifted his eyes towards the house, he was tempted to reverse out of the driveway and head straight over to her apartment. Having another fight with Eva was the last thing he wanted to do right now.

Letting out a frustrated groan, Toby pushed open his door and exited the truck. Using the slowest walk he could manage, he finally entered the house, dropping his workbag by the door. As he slipped off his jacket, he heard movement coming from the kitchen and made his way over.

"Hey." He said moving towards the refrigerator and took out a bottle of water.

"Station said you left almost two hours ago," Her voice had an eerie calmness to it. "Where were you?"

Toby choose to take a sip of the water before answering. "Had a few drinks down at Keith's place, want me to call him so you can ask for yourself?"

"Yes, actually, I would like to talk to him."

Toby narrowed his eyes at her and placed the water bottle down beside him a little hard then he should have. "What the hell is your problem Eva? I'm not allowed to go out after a long day of work and get a beer at my friend's bar?"

"Of course you can sweetie," She twisted in the chair to look at him. "As long as that friend's bar doesn't have skanks working in them that are trying to steal you away from our baby."

"No one is stealing me away from the baby, you maybe, but not the baby."

"Where is the difference in that? If she steals you away from me, then our baby will grow up fatherless because you know damn well that she will not let you have anything to do with this child while I'm around."

"Spencer would never do that. She raised her boys all on her own; she knows how difficult it is and wouldn't wish that life to anyone."

Eva raised an eyebrow and a side smirk appeared on her face. "When did she tell you all that? When you were at the strip club tonight?"

"I was not at the strip club, I already told you I was at Keith's bar." Toby lied through gritted teeth.

"That's funny," Eva started as she stood up and moved to leave the room. "If you were really at Keith's as you claim, you would have seen me sitting at the bar waiting for you."

Toby's eyes widened slightly and his fists clenched together.

"Might want to mark this down on your calendar for the end of the week, we have our first ultrasound appointment at 10am and I expect you to be on time." Eva said in a serious tone. Not waiting to a reply, she exited the room.

Toby stood in the kitchen and waited until he heard the bedroom door slam shut. Reaching back into his pocket, he pulled out his phone and opened up his message log.

Sending a quick text, he put his phone away and made his way out of the room towards the front door. Grabbing his workbag, he left the house and entered his truck slamming the door shut after he sat down.

His phone buzzed in his pocket but he refused to pull it out to check, instead he started the truck, backed out of the driveway and sped down the road towards the highway.

How am I losing control of everything? Every plan I had for my future is slipping away from me fasting then I can blink.

Toby hands gripped the steering wheel tighter.

I will not lose Spencer again because of this. I lost her once and in doing so, I missed out watching both my son's being born, I missed out watching them grow; take their first steps, their first words. I missed an entire lifetime of firsts that I will not be able to get back or even make up.

Toby leaned his head back against the headrest and took a few deep breathes to relax.

How terrible of a person am I? I should be excited about this new baby, I should be shouting for joy and calling my family to share the great news. But I can't, because I am not excited for this baby, I am afraid.

"Why? This baby won't change my feelings about Spencer and the boys."

Won't it thought, won't everything change the moment I hold that little baby in my arms for the first time. What about my feelings for Eva will those change too?

Toby shook his head. "No, I will never love Eva the way that I love Spencer. This pregnancy can never change those feelings; I need to make this work between both of them, for my children."

His mind flashed to the boys, the first time he met them was at the birthday party at her parent's house. He could not believe he did not notice it that day, it must have been because he was so blindsided by the mere idea that someone else had gotten his girl pregnant.

If he had really looked at the boys that day, he would have seen how Tristan was a perfect mix of both Spencer and him, his blue eyes, her thin nose with his full lips. Nathan on the other hand was a mini version of himself, dark hair, blue eyes and high cheekbones.

I cannot wait to get to know my boys and I hope that one day they will be able to see me as their father.

Toby pulled his truck into the empty lot and killed the engine. Drumming his fingers nervously on the wheel, his eyes shifted over to the clock on his dash and then to his review mirror.

He stopped drumming when his eyes saw headlights coming down the road and he got out of the truck when the car pulled alongside of his.

"Hey, I know it's late, but I needed to talk to you." Toby voiced out as he leaned against his passenger door and stuffed his hands deep into his pockets.

"Is everything okay?" Spencer asked as she closed her door and took the few steps to stand in front of him.

"Eva knows I was at the club tonight." He watched the smile fade away from her face and it was replaced by a look of concern.

"What did she say about it?" Her voice was low and guarded; he guessed it was because she was worried about another fight breaking out between the two of them.

"Nothing that you need to worry about, I'll handle it." He said as he removed his hands from his pockets and reached out to rub her arms to comfort her.

"I don't like the sound of that Toby. What did she say to you?" She asked, as she looked him straight in the eyes.

"Spence," He pushed off the truck and moved closer to her. "Trust me on this one okay; you don't have to worry about Eva causing any trouble for you."

"I'm not worried for me, I'm worried for you. Eva is real determined to keep you all to herself and away from me."

Toby sent her a smile and wrapped his arms around her. "I'm here right now aren't I?"

"Yes, but for how long?" She rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes as she listened to his heartbeat.

"Forever."

"I hope so."

Toby let a small laugh vibrate his chest. "C'mon, let's go for a walk." He started to walk with her towards the field.

"We should bring the twins here one day, I'm sure they would have a lot of fun." Spencer commented as they made their way to a swing-set.

"That actually brings up another question I had for you." Toby started. "When are we going to tell them that I am their father?"

"We can tell them anytime you want, whenever you feel the time is right." She smiled as she held his hand a little tighter in her own.

"Does this weekend work for you?"

"I would say yes, but the boys are moving in this weekend, it's going to be a little hectic. Maybe we can do during the week?"

Toby nodded. "Do you girls need any help moving in their things? I'm sure I can spare a few hours without Eva knowing about it."

"You don't have to do that, Caleb and Ezra will be over to help move all the heavy bedroom furniture so we should be good on the help."

"Are you sure?" He teased with a smile and before she could answer, he picked her bridal style into his arms. "I'm really strong when it comes to lifting."

Spencer laughed as she wrapped one arm around his neck for support. "Alright fine, if you think you can sneak away then you are welcome to help out for a few hours."

"Great!" He smiled brightly and leaned forward placing a quick kiss to her lips. "Do you want me to let you down or carry you the rest of the way to the swings?"

"I don't mind being carried." She smiled back at him and laid her head on his shoulder.

Toby shifted her body a bit to get a better hold of her as he continued to walk to the swings. This is perfect, I got my girl in my arms and soon I will have my boys at my side and we will finally be the family we were meant to be.

When he got to the swings, he carefully placed her back on the ground before walking over to a swing. "We should make this park our spot." He said as he kicked off the ground with his feet.

"I thought we already had a spot, the overlook in Rosewood." She said sitting down next to him and started to swing as well.

"We can have two spots, this one in Philly and the overlook in Rosewood. Give us two places to go when times get hard."

Spencer nodded as she swung her legs faster to swing higher. "You're not excited about the baby are you?"

Toby's feet caught on the ground as he stopped himself mid swing. "What?" Okay, either she can read me like a book or she gained the ability to read minds.

She kept swinging, not repeating herself.

Toby watched her, her eyes were forward, her body relaxed as she shifted back and forth, swinging her legs in and out to keep her speed. "I'm uh- I haven't really processed it yet."

"Have you been to any of her appointments?"

He starred at her again. "She has one at the end of the week, I'm not even sure I want to go."

"You should go; it's one of those experiences that you are going to regret missing. You are going to be in such awe once you hear the heartbeat for the first time."

How is she so calm about this? I know if our roles were reversed, I would be freaking out about my man having a baby with another woman.

"Was Wren with you for your appointments?"

Spencer turned her head to look at him, her hair blocking the hurt look in her eyes for a moment as the swing moved forward but just as quick as she looked, it was gone; her eyes focused ahead of her again.

"He was and it made a huge difference not having to go at it alone. That is why I think you need to go with her and support her, even if you are not excited about the pregnancy at all."

Toby nodded slowly as he stood up from his swing, one hand remaining on the metal chain. "I'm afraid to get excited about everything because I don't want our relationship to change."

Spencer started to slow down but did not reply.

"I haven't a clue what is going to happen as the months go on. I know what I want to happen but nothing is a set in stone."

"What do you want to happen?" She had stopped the swing now.

"I want to wake up from this dream." He moved to stand in front of her and rested each of his hands on the chains. "I want us together, married, living in Rosewood with our boys. I want to wake up every morning and know that my day is going to be great because I have you to come home too when it's all over. Am I crazy for wanting all that, for wanting our past to be our future?"

Spencer smiled as she shook her head slowly. "No, you are not crazy. You are a romantic." She placed one of her hands over his. "We will get there one day when the time is right."

"How are you so calm about all of this?"

"Trust me I'm not." She laughed. "I'm just really good at hiding my feelings and putting on my mask."

"How are you feeling about sneaking around with me?"

"Honestly?" She asked and he nodded. "I hate it Tobes. I don't want us to have a hidden relationship because we are both afraid to tell everyone about us again."

"You are talking about your father aren't you?"

Spencer nodded. "He doesn't want history to be repeating itself."

"Let me guess," Toby started as he crossed his arms in front of her chest. "He blames me for what happened to you?"

"Yes, even though I told him that he is crazy for thinking that way because it was my fault but he still refuses to believe that."

"Your father was always a jackass when it came to us being together." Toby said while kicking at the ground.

"Some things will never change, one of those being my father."

"I take it he was less than thrilled when he found out that I was the one who got you pregnant too?"

Spencer smiled up at him. "All I can say is it was a good thing you left town because I'm sure he would have killed you the first chance he had. Now he just gets red in the face and mumbles a few curses words under his breath when we bring up the topic."

"I guess it's a good thing I'm on the police force." Toby smiled while giving her a quick wink.

A low rumble of thunder sounded overhead causing the pair to look up and watch the moon disappear behind dark clouds.

"Let's head back to the truck before the sky opens on us." Toby said holding out a hand for her to take.

"It's just rain Toby," she smiled and started to swing again. "I've always wanted to swing in the rain."

Toby smiled while taking a step back out of her way and looked up again as another round of thunder rippled across the dark sky. "We haven't had rain in a few weeks; I hope you are ready for a downpour."

"Bring it on mother nature!" Spencer shouted with a grin.

"You are crazy Spence. One minute we are having a serious conversation and the next you want to act like a kid and get caught in a rain storm."

"You know you want to run around in the rain, admit it."

Toby laughed. "Sure, when I was five but now not so much."

Light rain drops began to fall as another wave of thunder broke behind the clouds. "Well you better hurry to your truck because it's going to start picking up any second now." Spencer grinned as she kicked her legs in and out to build more speed.

"And leave you out here all by yourself?" Toby shook his head. "I'll go when you do."

"Hope the heat works in that old truck."

Toby just grinned at her teasing and watched how her inner child came to life as the rain drops started to build. She is beautiful. He thought to himself as she closed her eyes and tilted her head back letting the fallen drops caress her face.

The heavy rain soaked both of them in a matter of seconds and as much as Toby wanted to dash to his truck, he remained at the swing-set watching Spencer enjoying herself.

A flash of lighting lit up the field and Spencer started to slow down her swinging. "Okay, maybe it's time we get out of the rain." She shouted over another roar of thunder.

Toby nodded and once she came to a complete stop, he held out his hand again which she took this time with a smile. "I have an extra towel in my workbag." He said close to her ear before the two of them started to jog back to the cars.

When they arrived at the truck, Toby opened the passenger door and motioned for her to enter first, and he followed shutting the door behind him. Reaching into his pockets, he pulled out his keys and started the truck, switching the buttons around so heat would soon fill the small space.

Spencer sat with her back pressed against the driver side door, her legs up in front of her while her arms rested on her knees. "What do you think of rain storms now?" She had a smirk on her face when he looked in her direction.

For a moment he forgot that he knew how to speak, his eyes were too busy roaming her soaked body. Her light blue jeans were now darker, hugging her legs even tighter than before, while her white t-shirt was now see-through, and the sight of her black bra was making his heart race faster. Her brown eyes were dancing with lust even when she moved some of her damp brown hair away from her face.

Subconsciously he wet his lips as he let the bag drop back to the floor. "I think I'm starting to love them." He spoke in a low deep voice as he slid his body closers to hers. "Come here." He said grabbing one of her hands and giving her a small tug.

Spencer moved so she was sitting on his lap with her legs on either side of his, she placed a hand on his chest while her other moved behind his head.

Toby grinned and moved his head so his lips were next to her ear. "Do I have to wear a blindfold if I want another dance from you?"

"How'd you figure out it was me?" Her voice was low as she closed her eyes when he started kissing her neck.

He grinned, "I have my ways, but a few things gave it away. First off," He moved his hands to each of her thighs and ran his finger up towards her hips. "I've had these beautiful legs wrapped around me a couple of times, a feeling I would never forget, blindfolded or not."

"Second," One of his hands moved off her hips and took hold of her own hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing each of her fingers. "Your touch is the only one that can turn me on by just dragging your fingertips across my skin."

"The finale thing that gave you away," He dropped her hand back to his chest as he reached up and took a small strand of her hair between his fingers and he leaned forward, taking in the smell. "When you rested your forehead against mine, I got the scent of your strawberry shampoo."

"I guess you really are a detective." Spencer smirked. "You have no idea how hard it was not to kiss you." She slowly started grinding her hips against him while leaning her head down, bringing her lips teasingly closer to his own.

Toby let a small grin slip from his lips, "Probably just as hard as it was for me not to touch you once I figured it out." He let his hands run up the side of her body. "God Spence," He moaned when she grinded harder on him. "If you keep doing that I won't be able to stop myself taking you right now in this truck."

Toby was sure it was not the look of want and need in her eyes that surprised him, but her words that stilled him and made his heart beat faster than it had ever done before, he almost wanted to ask if he heard her right.

"Take me Toby," She whispered as she ran her fingertips over his lips and before she kissed him she whispered again. "I'm yours."
