Morgan was about to leave the airport parking lot with Savannah when his phone started ringing. He was surprised to hear from any of them during the day. So far the team had left him to his peace while he figured things out, which only made him worried about why Garcia was calling now from work now.
He glanced at Savannah, who was also wearing a worried expression, before he answered. "What's up, Mama?" He asked.
"Are you still in Chicago?" She asked.
"No, we landed about thirty minutes ago. We're about to head home." He said. "What's going on, Garcia?"
"Okay, she's fine, but we need to have a family meeting," she said. "Sophia was suspended for fighting today."
"She was what?" He asked. "Where is she?"
"She's here, we have a local case." She said. "I haven't even talked to her yet. Reid picked her up and he said she needs some time alone to think about what happened."
"Oh, she'll get some time alone." Morgan said. "About a month's worth, in her room. She knows better than to start a fight."
"Morgan, Reid doesn't think she started it." She said. "She was being picked on by a girl Liam started dating. I don't know all the details, but the girl hit Sophia with a locker door in the side of her head, Derek."
"What did Sophia do?" Morgan frowned heavily.
"She punched the girl in the face," Garcia said quietly. "Once was enough."
"That's my girl," Morgan said. Although he wasn't happy about it, he was a bit proud in that moment. "I'll be over soon, Savannah will examine her."
Garcia rushed into Morgan's office the minute she could step away from the case. Reid stopped in early to fill her in on what was going on, but he insisted that Sophia needed some alone time to think about what had happened. Garcia didn't like it, but she stayed away until she couldn't anymore.
"Are you okay?" She asked when she saw her daughter sitting with Reid on the couch. She was stretched out, with her head in his lap as he held some ice wrapped in a towel to the side of her head. "How's your head."
Sophia shrugged. "It's sore."
Reid frowned as he looked down at her, removing the ice for a minute. "What kind of sore?" He asked. "Are you dizzy, or nauseous?"
"It's just sore, Daddy," she mumbled. "The ice is helping."
"I talked to Morgan. They landed and will be here soon." Garcia said. "Savannah can take a look."
Sophia looked at her. "Was he mad?"
"He was mostly concerned, Sophia." She said. "I don't think he was angry, but he wasn't pleased."
Sophia was quiet for a moment, before she spoke again, barely above a whisper. "Daddy?"
"Yes, sweetheart?" He said.
"Will you read to me?" She asked.
"Of course," he smiled slightly as he reached for one of the books as she moved her hand to hold the ice against her head.
Garcia sat at the desk and listened to Reid read to their daughter. It was something she loved watching. The simple act that Reid started the first night they were together continued any time Sophia was upset. It was her way of feeling safe and comforted, and close to Reid for the most part, but also close to them all. Over the years, Sophia out grew certain habits and traditions, but this one stuck around and they were all glad for it.
Morgan raced over to work, parking and heading into the building quickly. Savannah was right behind him, struggling to keep up as they got on the elevator. "Derek, slow down." She said. "I'm sure she's fine."
"She better be," he shook his head. "What if this was a cry for attention, or she was acting out because of what's happening with us?"
"Give her a little more credit, Derek," she said. "She's a teenage girl with a broken heart and high school is a hard place to be."
"I don't want her to feel like I'm abandoning her and starting a new family." He said.
"Is that her fear, or is it yours?" She asked. "Sophia knows she has a place in our family. Our home is her home too."
Morgan sighed and put his arm around her. "You're right," he said. "I just don't want to lose her."
"You won't," she said. "She loves you, you're her hero."
Morgan stopped short outside of the office when he heard Reid. He was reading to Sophia and it made him smile. Garcia saw him, but he put his hand up, letting the scene continue for a few more minutes. Reid noticed them in the doorway, but Sophia didn't until they stepped into the room. She looked at Reid before sitting up slowly to face Morgan.
He kneeled in front of her, lifting her chin and moving her hair to look at the side of her face. It was red, and it was starting to bruise. It was hard for him to see and he frowned heavily. "How's my baby girl?"
"Fine," she shrugged. "Are you mad?"
"I'm angry some girl attacked you, and I'm upset that you had to resort to violence, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little proud to hear that you defended yourself." He said with a small smile before turning to Savannah. "Will you make sure she's okay?"
"Of course, Sophia can you sit on the desk here," she said as she looked around the room. "And, everyone out, for now."
Sophia tried to hide her smile as Savannah kicked them all out of the room. Her parents always like to be involved and none of them looked happy at being sent away. She hopped up to sit on the edge of Morgan's desk as Savannah closed the door and blinds.
"Thanks," she said.
"You know, there's something wrong with your story," she said as she grabbed her medical bag. "You'd think a bunch of profilers would have noticed you were lying about what happened."
"I think the injury threw them off," she said, staring at her for a moment. "How did you know?"
"I heard you talking on the phone the other night with Liam, look straight ahead for me," she said as she flashed a light in Sophia's eyes. "Follow the pen without moving your head, and I also heard you tell Liam to tell Mark to stop using Ashley to make Caitlyn jealous. Does this hurt?"
"A bit," she winced as Savannah felt around her head. "You were listening?"
"I was reading and you weren't being quiet," she said as she stopped examining her and made eye contact. "You were defending your friend, why would you take the blame?"
"Because Caitlyn has already been suspended once," Reid said from the doorway. "And the school has a zero tolerance for fighting. They wouldn't let it slide a second time, she would have been expelled."
"Were you all eavesdropping?" Savannah asked and waited for Morgan and Garcia to also appear in the doorway. "Of course you were."
"Sophia's injury may have distracted us from her tells, but I wasn't distracted when you came into the room or when you kicked us all out," Reid explained. "We knew that you knew something."
"Daddy," Sophia said. "I couldn't go to school without Caitlyn."
"Okay, but why lie to us, Sophia?" Morgan asked.
"I didn't lie," she said. "I did punch her, and she did hit me with a locker first."
"But you left out the reason why," Reid said. "I understand the reason for lying to the principle to protect your friend, but I do not understand why you felt you needed to lie to us too."
"Is it because you and Liam are back together?" Morgan asked.
"We like Liam, Sophia," Garcia said. "We wouldn't be upset if you two got back together."
"We're not back together," she said. "He called to apologize for what happened."
"You mean for pressuring you?" Morgan said. "He better have apologized, and if you two get back together, I want to talk to him first."
"I'd like to speak with him as well," Reid said.
"And this is why I didn't tell you we started talking again," Sophia said. "You get too involved in every little detail. I didn't have to tell you any of what happened, but I did, so don't throw it back in my face."
"We're not throwing it in your face, Sophia, you didn't do anything wrong." Morgan said. "Any boy that wants to date my daughter is going to have to talk to me about his intentions."
"Not to mention that we need to be involved," Reid said. "We're your parents and you're fifteen and I stand by my decision to kick a half-naked boy out of your room, especially since he wasn't supposed to be there in the first place."
"Okay, okay," Garcia interrupted, sensing her daughter's annoyance. "We're a bit off topic here. Sophia, you realize that by lying to protect Caitlyn, you now have a suspension on your record?"
"I don't care, Mama," she said. "I care about Caitlyn and if she is expelled she has to go to that rundown, public high school where they have metal detectors. She's tough, but she's not that tough."
Garcia sighed and looked at Reid and Morgan before shrugging. "I'd do the same thing."
"I probably would too," Morgan said. "And you know we want what's best for Caitlyn."
"But," Reid interrupted. "This could seriously affect your college applications."
"Daddy, I don't care about college, I care about Caitlyn." She repeated. "I'm not telling the principle the truth and if you try and make me, I'll lie. It doesn't change anything. I was still fighting."
"Sophia, I care about Caitlyn too, but you cannot let her mistakes impact your future." Morgan said firmly. "If we decide the principle needs to know the truth, you will cooperate."
Reid nodded when Morgan glanced at him. "You're grounded until you bring your grades up," he said.
"Whatever," Sophia mumbled, crossing her arms.
"Fix that attitude, Sophia." Morgan warned.
"Dad," she whined. "I just want to go home. I'm tired."
Savannah frowned, intervening before Morgan or Reid could continue their lecture. "Are you feeling more tired than you would usually be?" She asked.
"Yeah, kind of," she said. "Why, is that bad?"
"I think we should go to the hospital, get a MRI scan, just to be safe." She said slowly.
"Savannah," Morgan said. "What's going on?"
"I just want to be sure she's okay," she explained with a smile and nodded at Sophia, trying to keep her calm. "I'll take her. I'll call when we're done."
"Dad?" Sophia turned to him, the worry painted on her face.
"Yeah, baby, I'm coming with you." He said as he turned to Reid and Garcia. "What about you guys?"
Garcia exchanged a glance with Reid. "We have to stay, the case," she said. "But, please call us after everything and we'll stop by on our way home?"
"Daddy?" Sophia turned to him and he could see the fear in her eyes.
Reid nodded and leaned down to kiss Sophia's head, hugging her tightly. "You'll be fine," he said.
OOOOO
Sophia sat on the hospital bed with Morgan, leaning into his chest with his arm around her as they waited for Savannah and the test results. She was worried, and the MRI made her nervous and claustrophobic, so she was a bit worked up. Morgan was good at calming her down and making her feel safe, but he was worried too and Savannah wasn't saying much.
"Sophia, I'll be right back," he said when he noticed Savannah in the hallway and approached her just outside the door. He could still see Sophia through the blinds, but she couldn't hear him. "What's going on?"
"I don't know," she said. "From the marks on the side of her face it's likely the locker hit her in the temple and I just want to be sure it's nothing more than some bruising and a slight concussion."
"Nothing more like what?" He asked. "What are you checking for?"
Savannah sighed after hesitating. "A brain bleed," she said. "She doesn't feel well, she has a headache and she's tired, which could be normal, but I'll feel better if we check."
Morgan nodded, careful to control his reaction because he knew Sophia was watching. "Fine, just keep me in the loop."
"Savannah," a doctor approached them, interrupting the couple's conversation.
"Derek, this is Dr. Cooper, he's the neurologist that I asked to consult," she said. "This is Sophia's father."
"Nice to meet you," he nodded as he handed Savannah the scans. "Scans are clear, but I'd like to do an exam before I clear her."
Morgan nodded and he headed into the room to meet Sophia. Savannah and Morgan followed him, lingering by the doorway as he checked her out. It only took a few minutes and it was a longer version of what Savannah did when she saw Sophia.
"Everything seems fine, she has a mild concussion, but unless she starts throwing up or the pain becomes severe, there's not much to worry about." He concluded. "Rest up for a few days, try not to read or watch TV for twenty-four hours, come back if anything changes."
Morgan nodded. "Thank you," he said. "Alright, let's go home."
The drive back to the house was pretty quiet. Morgan was caught between being worried about her injuries and less than pleased with her way of dealing with the situation. Savannah was tired from the flight and all the running around, and Sophia was just not feeling well.
Sophia headed upstairs to her room to change before she came back down to the living room a few minutes later. She felt a sudden rush of emotions, a need to be around Morgan that was getting stronger, particular when he was gone for periods of time.
Savannah was on the phone ordering take-out in the kitchen and Morgan was just finishing up talking to Garcia. He was on his cell phone in the living room when Sophia suddenly hugged him, wrapping her arms around his middle and burying her head in his chest. Morgan frowned slightly as he put his free arm around her, rubbing her back.
"Yeah, we just ordered, should be here when you get here. See you soon," Morgan said as he hung up. "What's wrong, baby girl?"
"Nothing," she mumbled. "I just wanted a hug. I missed you."
Morgan smiled and tightened his grip on her, dropping a kiss to her head. "I missed you too, Sophia," he said. "Considering you're suspended for the next few days, we'll be spending lots of time together."
She smiled as she looked up at him. "Good."
