Hello Rupees! I finally finished up Chapter 21 for you! Sorry if it's a little short... oh and don't forget to check out the A/N below as well for some special information. Anyways... ONWARD with Chapter 21!
~Mitch's POV
He stood there with the rest of the group feeling just as confused as many of the other looked. It was obvious for him to tell who were confused and who were worried or scared. A few, including himself, had taken a step forward in the direction Link had bolted off to out of curiosity. Yet no one was entirely sure what they were supposed to do. He had told them to wait there for him to come back, but since he left almost twenty minutes had passed. Out of nowhere a chilling thought crossed his mind ' what if something happened.' He looked to Jordan for consultation and was met by a voiceless agreement. Without any words being passed they knew what the other was thinking and nodded in simultaneous agreement.
"Alright," He started off, grabbing one or two people's attention from the babbling group. Yet not everyone payed attention.
"HEY!" Jordan shouted above everyone, gaining full attention and startling a flock of birds somewhere in the distance.
"Thank you," Mitch nodded. "Alright. Guys, it been a while since Link left, so rather than wait out here all night I think it would be best if you guys go and ask Renando if you'll be able to stay in his house for the night. If you tell him what's happened I'm sure he'll say yes. Jordan, Jason and I are going to find where Link went. We'll send news with one of us if something happens." He looked to the faces of those around him and received many nods and words of agreements.
"Good," Mitch stated.
"Let's go." Jordan rose her hand up in the air and signaled everyone to move. Most people moved off to Renando's hut, while she, Jason and Mitch fanned out in the direction Link had run towards.
Jason went to check a few of the vacant houses on the left hand side of the narrow valley. Jordan ran towards Barnes's bomb shop turning fox mid-stride, and Mitch ran towards the Inn. About ten feet away from the Inn he noticed the door was swung slightly open. He made to enter but a better plan crossed his mind as his hand reached for the handle. Mitch paused, thought on his plan again and pulled away from the door. He ran back towards the center of the village where he had last seen everyone, at the last second before the village exit he made turned left and ran up a small hill.
'Please let this work…'
As he chugged up along the hill he noticed a single light flickering in one of the main windows where he and the rest of the team stayed. 'Great…' a small growl escaped his throat 'just what I need.' Mitch shook his head and moved off the hill onto the roof of a nearby building. On it was a sign he was unable to read. He made a mental note to ask Link or Jordan to teach him the local language. He sized up the distance between the two buildings and jumped. As he landed he pulled out one of his axes and a dagger and crawled through a crack in the wall barely big enough for him to fit. When he was through he crawled behind the partition that blocked Jordan off from the guys when they were in the room, he slowly and carefully looked through one of the openings in the weaving. The only thing he was able to see was a man-sized lump in the middle of the floor covered by a blanket. He wasn't able to recognize the shape fully for who it was. Near the lump was a bottle with green liquid that was half way full and a red bottle equally full. Mitch placed his axe back behind his shield and fully unsheathed his dagger, as he made to move closer he was stopped by a hand firmly planted on his shoulder. Without thinking he swung around and sliced his blade against the attacker's body not particularly aiming for any general spot, but he knew he made contact when he heard a sharp inhale followed by-
"Sun-of-a-poe!"
Only then did he recognize the attacker. He had attacked Link.
~Jordan's Pov~
She wasn't having much luck and it was really starting to piss her off. She should've found Link by know but wasn't able to find as much as a hint as to where he had disappeared to. Multiple times now she'd turned fox and back again trying to find something, no, anything. It'd been almost an hour since she had left the others. Then she realized why she was slacking. She hadn't eaten since dawn when they left for that mornings training, now it was almost one in the morning. The more she began to think about it the more her stomach began to hurt. Suddenly something caught her eye.
Just to her left was a bush and on that bush was a small patch of berries. Without realizing it she quickly found herself grabbing at the bush and wolfing down the fruit. When she finished her impromptu feast she stood up and went to continue her search. She barely made it five steps before her stomach retched horribly causing her to double over in excruciating pain. She let out a small cry falling to the ground. Soon she heard feet running towards her. She tried to open her eyes to make out the owner of the feet. All she could make out was a blurry outline of someone before her eyes uncontrollably snapped shut. "Hang in there J." was the last thing she heard before she lost consciousness.
~Mitch's Pov~
All he could do was stick his arms out and catch Link as he collapsed from shock and blood loss. He stood there petrified, unable to think racking his brain for something, anything that would help. Frantically he looked around the room until a mumble brought his attention back to earth. It took him a second to realize it was Link that had made the noise. He looked down at his face and saw his lips moving, but heard no more noise coming out. Mitch found himself dragging Link over to the lump on the floor. "Come on bud, stay with me!" he commanded him as he laid him down on the floor with his face up. As he made to run and find bandages Link's face flopped sideways in the least graceful way possible, his tongue almost touching the floor. It took all his self-control not to burst out laughing should he wake the unknown lump, which he had thought to kill but for an unknown reason couldn't bring himself to do it. Finally he found a draw full of bandages. He grabbed all of them and raced back to Link, tearing off his ruined shirt to clean the wound as best he could. It was worse than he'd thought. The dagger had made a surprisingly deep gash across his body from just below his right shoulder almost down to his left hip bone. Blood had dripped all over his torso, and some had gone even lower. Mitch left that for Link to clean off later.
Instantly he began wrapping the wound as best he could, which wasn't that impressive. The light from the oil-lamp in the room wasn't that bright but was just enough for him to see what he was doing. Half a minute later he had finished wrapping up the wound and grabbed at the red-liquid filled bottle he seemed to recognize as a health potion. Slowly and carefully he gently raised Link's head which he placed in his lap. He popped out the cork from the bottle and poured a small amount into Link's open mouth. Nothing happened.
"Please, please, please, please work!" he cried to himself as Link remained motionless except for the short labored breaths that were becoming even more so. Mitch stared at his friend, and started to cry. It took him a few seconds to realize the labored breathing that filled the air had stopped. The only sound that seemed to reverberate from the wall were his own sobs. He placed a shaking hand on Link's chest to check and was met with nothing. No raising or lowering, no heart beat, nothing. Mitch's breath caught in his chest as he tried to wail, scream, yell, and make some sort of noise, anything. But the noise he could make was silence. Silence and sobs.
He lowered his head, placing his forehead on Link's letting his tears spill uncontrollably where ever they chose to land. His breath caught in his chest a few more times as he tried to form words to fill the air with instead of his crying. After about the fiftieth attempt he found himself making noises other than sobs and whines.
"Come on…" he pleaded between heavy intakes of breath. "please! Don't give up yet. We still need you. Without you we're lost… all of us. Jordan… she'll be crushed. The others they'll never forgive me, and I'll never forgive myself! Just please…" he took another breath. "Don't… Don't. Be. Dead."
It seemed for ever before he stopped crying and not by choice, after about an hour or so he was all dried out, unable to produce any more tears. He raised his head from Link's and tore off a piece of his own shirt to dry off his friends face. He had cried so much that the wooden floor-boards beneath him looked like a rainstorm had recently paced over. Mitch gently removed Link's head from his lap and placed a rolled up blanket beneath it. When he had finished doing that he looked around for Link's sword. When he found it he placed it in Link's hands then placed his hands and sword on his chest. He took one last glance at his friend then turned to leave the room and tell the others what had happened. Mitch moved slowly down the stairs, hating himself more and more with every step. He was almost at the main door way when something stopped him, he wasn't a hundred percent sure what had made him from walking out the door and down the street but he moved his hand away from the handle.
Somehow he found himself at the top of the stairs again reaching for the handle on the door. He pushed it open and fell to the ground. Link's eyes were open again. He looked around the room terrified trying to reach out for something. Finally he made eye contact with Mitch who was still in a heap in the door way. He took in a deep breath and tried to talk, but only succeeded in starting a coughing fit which caused blood and fluid to come up from his lungs. Link tried to grab at the red bottle but he knocked it over and it rolled away from him.
Mitch jolted up and grabbed the bottle thrusting it into Link's hands. Link grabbed it and drink greedily from the bottle. When the bottle was empty he placed it gently on the floor. He tried to sit up but howled in pain when moved in the slightest.
"Don't!" Mitch yelled placing his hand on the left side of Link's chest where the wound wasn't as great. "Don't move. You'll stretch the bandages and reopen the cut." Already his bandages that were wrapped around him began to slowly seep up the small amount of fresh blood adding onto the already crusted layer. "Sorry about that by the way." He refused to make eye contact as he began adding on new bandages. "I don't expect you to except my apology, nor should you. I almost killed you. And that's unforgivable."
"How…" Link winced as Mitch over tightened a bandage. "how long was I…"
"You were missing for three hours." Mitch shook his head as he talked, trying to focus on his wrapping making sure he got everything. "When I.." he paused, stopping his wrapping as he took in a couple breaths. "You were… gone, for almost two." He tied off the bandage and cut the extra on the blade of his axe, not wanting to touch or even look at his dagger. He knew he would have to at some point, but that point was not now.
Mitch glanced over Link and couldn't help but crack a smirk.
"What?"
"You, look like a mummy." Mitch chuckled
"Yeah well I'm a mummy who's gunna kick your butt when I'm better!" laughed Link as he punched Mitch in the forearm. He instantly regretted both actions as he was met with yet another jolt of pain. Mitch quickly tried to comfort him as curiosity got the better of him.
"Who's the lump?"
"You're not going to believe this," Link let out a smile. "but it's Sky!"
Mitch looked Link dead in the eye trying to tell if he was lying but found clue as to if he was or not. Finally he gave up and wacked the lump over the head. The lump moved and shrank smaller as if trying to protect itself from further attacks, it reminded Mitch of a turtle.
"Hey Ding-Dong!" he shouted at the Sky-Lump which rolled over and removed its blanket from its body.
"Can't a former hostage get any rest around here?" he complained as he was tackled to the floor by Mitch in an attack hug.
"Everyone thought you were dead dude!"
"By the sound of it, so was Link." Sky let out a macabre laugh as he looked over at Link who was still lying beside him. He was met by a small grunt of laughter.
"Midna!" Link called out to nowhere in particular. A few seconds later the impish form of the Twilight Princess was hovering above him, she let out a small shriek when she saw him. He tried to calm her down by telling him what had happened. It didn't help.
~ Midna's Pov ~
Midna let out a grunt as she whipped her hair at Mitch's head and pulled him off the ground holding him out over the stair well landing leading up to the room. Mitch was now floating almost twenty feet above the main floor. She yanked her hair away from his face slapping him in the process, yet he remained levitating. His head snapped back and his face was frozen in an inaudible scream. Midna thought on letting him hang there forever but a small voice fluttered through her thoughts.
"You know…" a tiny ball of green landed on her shoulder. "He did actually save Link's life."
Midna let him hang there for a few more seconds as she thought on the new, unexpected words. After some time she let him crash to the floor below she heard a painful snap followed by a cry of pain. She glanced over the railing to see Mitch clutching at his ankle bent well past its normal amount. She cringed a little feeling slightly guilty.
The imp floated back into the room containing Link and Sky. Link glared at her with disgust, she tried to speak to him but was cut off before she could even make noise.
"Don't." he commanded utterly offended by her actions. "Don't speak. Just get us, all of us down to where the others are at."
"Link I'm s-"
"Now Midna." Link snapped. Midna hung her head for a second, ashamed at her actions as she located the others. In less than a minute Sky, Link and Mitch were in particle form floating about trying to find the others.
~ Deadlox's Pov~
"Everyone, shut up!" Ty shouted above the others as they were deciding whether they should send out a second search group to find the others and Link or wait till morning hoping for the best. "Look," He waved his hands "we're staying where we are till they get back. They've only been gone for an hour, maybe two at most. Yes it's tedious sitting and waiting but we'll have to remain doing so until either they come back or don't."
Just as he finished his little speech a knock was heard at the door. Everyone stood there wide-eyed for a moment until a voice was heard from outside.
"Open the door!" Jason anxiously yelled out.
Instantly a herd of people were at the door rushing to hear news of any kind. All of them were shocked when Jason shoved past them carrying Jordan in his arms, every one of them expecting the worst. A chorus of questions rang out about the room as he rushed her to a nearby table.
"Let me see the girl." Renando calmly spoke out amidst the chaos. The team made a path for him to come through and analyze the situation. He looked her over muttering to himself as he worked. Finally he seemed to have figured out what happened.
"It could be much worse." He shook his head in relief. A few people started to bombard him with questions but he silenced them with one hand. "No, your friend is not dead her entire body is in a state of temporary paralysis."
"What do you mean?" Jason turned to face him at the new news.
"I mean your friend is extremely lucky to be alive." Renando sighed. "She happened to eat the very berries that if left untreated can be lethal. Thankfully it is not time for them to be fully ripe yet."
"What do you mean 'If left untreated'?" Jason moved his hands from his face to below his chin.
"The berries are the ones we use to make health potions and medicine."
"So then why is our friend paralyzed?" Seto glared at the village leader.
"The berries have to be treated in a certain way before they can be turned into potions or medicine. Seeing as she ate the berries untreated she's lucky to be alive. Your friend got the better of two options."
"Yeah we got that!" Jason snapped as he stood up make his way closer to Jordan. "Can you do anything to help her?"
"I'm afraid," Renando sighed as he looked up from Jordan to the rest of the group. "The only thing we can do is wait. I have no way of telling exactly how many berries she ate. Without that knowledge there is a possibility I would kill her rather than revive her."
"Great." Jason flopped back to the ground in defeat. The team sat and waited once again in Renando's hut now waiting for multiple miracles.
Four hours and an eternity later a soft thump was heard just beyond the door. Jason and Ty shared a hesitant glance before moving to open the door. Once the door was open the sight was almost impossible to believe.
Midna floated above Link, Mitch, and Sky still hanging her head from embarrassment. The two in the door way looked at her questionably before allowing her float through the door way. She watched on from the shadows as the rest of the men planned how to best bring in the injured three without further injuring them.
Stories were exchanged of the many excitements of the night, though everyone was beyond happy to see Sky back among them everyone was concerned for Link.
"I'm fine," Link answered for about the hundredth time in an hour, the sun now fully risen over the nearby Death Mountain. "really I'm fine."
Many people started to ask Mitch what had happened as Renando began to wrap his foot in a stint. Mitch glanced at Link hesitant to tell the others the truth, and Link nodded as if to say "go ahead and tell them, I'm sure they'll understand." He took in a deep breath and began to tell his tale.
