Twisted Belonging Chapter 21
As soon as they stepped through the portal, Clary was hit by the familiar scent of New York. When she looked up, she was met by the towering building of the Institute. Her home.
'No!' The demon side screamed internally. 'Your home is with Jonathan! He loves you! You belong with him!' Clary wrenched herself from Jace's muscular arms and fell to the ground. Jace stared down at her with a look of love, but also confusion. Why was she trying to get away from him?
"Clary, it's okay! You're safe, I'll protect you." Jace said comfortingly, but Clary felt anything but safe.
"No Jace, you don't understand!" Clary protested, slowly edging away from Jace. He looked more confused now.
"Clary, what's wrong? I saved you from him!" Jace questioned. Clary was shaking her head.
"Jace, I wanted to stay! Don't you understand?" Tears streamed down Clary's eyes.
"What-what do you mean, Clary?".
"Jace, he knows I'm gone. And because he knows, he won't stop until he has me back! I wanted to stay to protect you all! You know what he's capable of, I don't want him to hurt you, any of you! And there's something else..." Clary was full on sobbing now. Jace's face took on a look of sympathy as he crouched down next to Clary. He moved some of her red hair away from her face, but Clary, despite the fact that she loved Jace, flinched away from his pianist fingers.
Jace was hurt. What had Jonathan done to her? But he was determined to show Clary she was safe around him. He reached out to pull Clary into his arms, but as his arms tightened around her, Clary began to struggle, but Jace would not give up. He sat down on the ground and pulled Clary onto his lap, and then he trapped her arms with his own, securing her. Clary soon gave up her fight and fell into his chest, sobbing loudly.
"I'm so sorry, Jace. All I want his for you to hold me, but I just- I can't." Clary sniffled. Jace hugged her tighter, feeling her warmth.
"Why Clary? What did he do to you?" Jace said quietly, not wanting to ruin the peace they had.
"Because when Jonathan fed me the demon blood, he only fed me a small amount. It wasn't enough to turn me, but now, all I think about his him. Half of me wants you, but the other half wants Jonathan. I hate it so much Jace, I just want things to go back to the way they were!" A dam burst inside Clary as all the emotions from the last couple of days spilt out from her eyes, and ignoring all the urges for Jonathan, she wrapped her arms around Jace, hugging him close to her.
Jace felt so sorry for Clary. While he had been worrying about what Jonathan had been doing to her while she had been in his grasp, he had never imagined he would've done this, no matter how deranged and psychotic he was. Thinking they belonged together, while all he wanted was to bend and manipulate her into his little object of possession and desire.
"Clary, I am so sorry for everything. I should've protected you. Don't worry, we will find a way to get the demon blood out of you, and we can go back to normal." Jace said reassuringly. Clary looked up at him with wide eyes, not her bright green ones though. She was about to reply when a dark, smooth voice spoke instead.
"Hello again little sister." It was Jonathan. He was staring at Jace with a dark glare in his eyes. He looked so dangerous, but so seductive. Clary mentally scolded herself for thinking like that.
"Stay away from her. Unless you want your insides spilled on the ground." Jace growled, keeping his hold on Clary. Jonathan snickered.
"I don't think I need to come anywhere near you to get her. Clary, come here." Jonathan said darkly. Reluctantly, Clary felt her legs rise from the ground, but Jace pulled her back down. Clary didn't know what came over her, as her teeth clamped down on Jace's arm, drawing blood. Jace cried out in surprise and pain as he let go of Clary. She shot up and slowly walked over to Jonathan, who held his arms wide. But just before Clary reached him, something whizzed past Clary and buried itself in Jonathan's shoulder. A knife.
Clary turned around to see Jocelyn standing on the steps of the Institute, her hand still stretched out. Clary began to run forward, when a hand clamped around her wrist. Her head swivelled round to see Jonathan holding her, blood running down from the wound in his shoulder.
"Don't run from me, Clary. You can't get away. You are mine." Jonathan growled. She paused, looking deep into his hollow eyes. She urged to touch him, to wrap her arms around him and kiss him all over. But she was stronger than that.
"No. I. DON'T!" Clary screamed, and she raised her hand to slap Jonathan across the face. Not expecting it, Jonathan let go of her and stepped backwards. Clary took this opportunity to grab one of his swords from his belt.
"Jace! Take the sword!" She shouted, and threw it to her boyfriend. Jace grabbed the sword and advanced towards Jonathan. Clary ran to her mother, and Jocelyn welcomed her with open arms. Holding her mother tight, Clary turned around to watch the fight between Jace and Jonathan.
Jonathan had quickly recovered from his shoulder wound, and now he and Jace were locked in an epic sword fight. Their swords clashed together, not once hitting each other. Clary knew they were both excellent sword fighters, so the ending to this battle was an even chance for both of them. Jace had defeated Jonathan before, could he do it again?
After a long while of the two of them swinging their swords back and forth, Jonathan quickly pulled the knife that was lodged in his shoulder out, and threw it at Jace's wrist, who then dropped his sword. With an evil smirk on his face, Jonathan stalked towards Jace, ready to deliver the death blow. Panicking, Clary screamed out.
"JONATHAN CHRISTOPHER MORGENSTERN!" Jonathan stopped dead in his tracks, and looked over to her. He looked so deadly yet innocent, Clary felt a pang of regret at what was about to happen. Quick as a flash, Jace grabbed his sword, and before Jonathan could register what was happening, Jace had buried the sword deep inside Jonathan's chest.
"NO!" Clary screamed and wrenched herself from Jocelyn's grasp, and she ran down the steps of the Institute to her brother. Jonathan looked down at the blade with shock. His eyes grew wide as he sunk to the floor. But just before he hit the ground, Clary caught him in her arms and lowered them both to the ground, his head in her lap. Clary was crying again as she looked down at her dying brother. Blood was pooling of Jonathan's stab wound, as red as Clary's hair. He looked up at her with extreme sadness.
"Clary...why? All I wanted was you..." Jonathan groaned.
"I know, Jonathan. But I don't belong to you. I'm so sorry, brother. You deserved so much more than this. You didn't deserve what Valentine did to you, you could have had a normal life. I would've been proud to have been called your sister. All your life you've been tortured, rejected and hated. But all you really wanted was acceptance and love. Despite all the evil things you have done Jonathan... I love you. So wherever you go after this life, know that I love you, my brother. I am so sorry." Clary wept, her tears spilling onto Jonathan's pale face.
All the pain seemed to disappear from his face, and was instead replaced with relief. He slowly brought his hand up to Clary's face and stroked her cheek.
"Thank you." Jonathan whispered. He took a deep intake of breath, and Clary saw the life begin to fade from his dark eyes. His hand fell from Clary's face as he took his final breath. Clary stared in disbelief.
"Oh... Jonathan, please-please don't leave.. Come back. Come back to me, Jonathan!" Clary whimpered, hugging her brother close to her. She looked up and saw Jace staring with an empty face, but with slight sympathy showing through. Jocelyn was weeping quietly. She had lost her son all over again, only this time permanently. As Clary sobbed over her brother's body, she cried knowing that Jonathan had achieved in death the one thing he had never gained in life.
Love.
1 week later
Clary sat by her window in her room at the Institute, looking out at the sky. They had burned Jonathan's body yesterday. Clary felt numb as she saw her brother's body go up in flames. She found it ironic that her brother wanted to burn down the world, yet he was the one set on fire.
Through a miraculous session with the Silent Brothers, they had managed to extract the demon blood from Clary. But despite the fact that Jonathan was gone, she kept expecting to see him by her side when she woke up, or find herself back in the apartment.
Clary sighed and looked over to her desk. On it were pictures she had been drawing of Jonathan. She kept them hidden from everyone, not wanting them to keep reminding her that he was gone, that he wasn't coming back.
Suddenly, someone knocked on Clary's door. She shot up from her place on the window and hid the drawings in her sketchbook, and then returned to her place on the window.
"Come in!" She called, and the door slowly opened. It was smiled at her and Clary returned it. He walked over to her with his hands in his pocket.
"Can I sit down?" He asked. Clary brought her knees up to her chest to make room for Jace. He sat down next to her and put his hand on one of her knees. Clary was glad he could touch her without her getting repulsed.
"How are you feeling?" Jace asked. Clary shrugged.
"A lot better than I was." She replied, fiddling with a strand of her hair. What Jace said next surprised Clary greatly.
"I wish we could've found a way to save him, Clary. Take out the demon blood like we did with you. I mean, I know he's done a lot of despicable things, but he was your brother." Jace admitted, looking straight at Clary while he said it. Clary sighed.
"Me too, Jace. But if you hadn't killed him, he wouldn't have stopped. It had to be done. But I'm glad that before he died, someone told him they loved him. That's all he ever wanted, to be loved."
Jace wrapped his arms around Clary, who gladly returned the hug. Taking a deep breath, Clary said to Jace, "If we ever have son, I want to call him Jonathan. For all that my brother could've been, what he should've been."
"Of course Clary." Jace responded, hugging her tightly. Clary looked out of the window, at the bright blue endless sky, hoping that Jonathan was somewhere safe.
"Ave Atque Vale, Frater."
