Eureka: From A to Z

Unmasked

Allison struggled to comprehend all that transpired the last four years.

It had been about two weeks and though she knew Jack and Jo were a couple, she couldn't come to terms. The initial shock had begun to wear off, but each time she saw them, it was another invisible slash across her heart.

She felt abandoned.

Thank God for her children.

It had taken Jenna all of two days to reconnect with Allison; her preliminary apprehension quickly fading. Now inseparable, it was as if no time had passed between them.

Allison guessed it was true; the bond between mother and child was unbreakable.

Kevin on the other hand was another story. He never lost faith that his mother would return. The first conversation they had upon her return was filled with laughter and tears. Of course, he insisted on heading home on the first flight out; Allison nixed his suggestion. She told him she had no intention of allowing him to miss any of his classes, she'd see him soon, and today he was coming home.

Sitting at a table near the back, she stared out the door of Café Diem, eagerly awaiting his arrival when suddenly, she regretted choosing this as a meeting spot.

Draped arm in arm, Jack and Jo strolled in. Allison's mood deflated as the harbingers of her broken heart entered. Lowering her head, she hoped to avoid any interaction with them as they sat at an adjacent table. Her eyes averted, the door opened again, and she didn't even have to look up; she knew Kevin had just entered the restaurant.

Overwhelmed, she was unprepared for the sight before her. Now a man, he was the spitting image of his father. Without words, they rushed each other; tears unabashedly flowing. The moment was perfect...

...that was until they were interrupted.

"Kev, why didn't you tell me you were coming home?"

Never taking his eyes off Allison, he answered. "I came to see my mother."

Jack attempted to hug him, only to be rebuffed. "What's wrong Buddy?"

An awkward silence filled the room as all eyes fell on the trio.

Voice tense, he asked, "Jack, do you remember what you told me all those years ago?"

Not waiting for a response, Kevin continued. "You told me you loved my mom. Now that she's returned, you're still with Jo."

"Kev..."

"And do you remember my response? I said if you ever hurt her, I'd break your legs."

"Kev, let's go home and talk."

"I am going home...with mom. Oh, and don't worry, your legs are safe."

Then, without warning, Kevin hauled back and struck him square on the jaw.

An obviously shocked Jack tumbled to the floor.

Promptly turning, Kevin offered Allison his arm. "Let's get Jenna and spend the day together...as a family."

Stunned, Allison didn't condone his actions, but was secretly filled with pride.

In time, her heart would heal.

The unconditional love of her children would see her through.
