Harry's phone buzzed loudly, causing him to pull it out of his pocket and look at it.
"Um change of plan," he suddenly announced to the room as he continued to read the message that he had just received.
"What's up?" Peter asked, concerned by his friend's tone.
"Something has happened at Oscorp. A man has been found dead in dad's office, with a large gaping hole in his stomach."
"Do you think it was your dad?"
"It has to be, his condition is worsening. We need to go now; there is no time to wait."
"You think we are ready to do this?" Gwen asked.
"As ready as we could be. Every minute we dawdle here trying to make a decision, Dad grows crazier and stronger."
Harry got up from his seat and jogged over to a set of drawers, opening them one by one and pulling out various pieces of equipment and clothing. He moved back over to Peter and Gwen, throwing the pile he had gathered down onto the table top.
"Right, I think that this is everything that we will need. You need to go and put this on," he said thrusting a heap of black material into Peter's arms.
"What is it?" he asked.
"That is the thermal skin I told you about. This is goes under your suit, so go and put it on, but leave the Spidey suit off of your torso until the next bit."
Peter went off and was soon back, holding the remainder of the Spidey suit in his hand, to stop it from dragging on the ground.
"Right brilliant you're back," Harry said as he turned from the table when he heard Peter walk back in.
In his hand, Harry held a small box in one hand and a half face mask in the other.
"This needs to go over your mouth and nose and this box I need to attach to the clip on your back."
Harry helped him put the latest equipment on and then handed him his Spidey mask and the black mask for the other suit.
"So to explain again, the black suit will stop your thermal signature from being detected by any of the sensors. This mask pumps your breath through this box, ensuring as much oxygen is used up as possible, expelling all the other gases out. The sensors only look for the oxygen, so they won't set off the alarms. Just remember that certain areas of the floor are set with pressure sensors, so be careful where you step. Guards are on high alert at Oscorp and will be there in around 30 seconds. The only way to delay them would be to disable the door panel and then spray this into the mechanism."
Harry handed over a small canister, marked only with a red label on the side. Peter took it from him and slid it down into his boot. Drawing up the rest of his Spidey suit, Peter put it on and then picked up the two masks from the table.
"Am I going to be able to see clearly enough through both masks?"
"The thermal suit has been designed to be as thin as possible, but thick enough to keep the heat in. The area around the eyes can be a little thinner, so it should be no problem to see through."
Peter slid both masks on and stood there ready for anything else Harry had for him.
"One last thing is," Harry said as he moved over to the controls, flipping a switch when he got there, "is to load up a schematic of the vault onto your lenses. Have you got it?"
"Yeah, it's just appeared. Are we all ready now?"
"Yes. Just remember we need that serum intact and as fast as possible. I know you are the best person for the job and I have every faith."
"You sound like I am about to go to my death, not go and retrieve a serum. Lighten up."
"Sorry I just know how important this is, if we leave it to much longer, Dad will be impossible to help. Do you think we should call S.H.I.E.L.D?"
"No, we don't need to involve them. As you said, this should be simple, they will just get in the way."
"Ok, well good luck," Harry said, giving his friend a man hug.
"Thanks. Well I better get going."
Harry released Peter and watched as his friend moved upstairs and then out of the roof, swinging towards Oscorp.
"You're going to call S.H.I.E.L.D aren't you?" Gwen asked coming up behind her boyfriend.
"Only if he runs into difficulty. For now, I think he can handle himself."
Harry pressed a few buttons on the console, deep in thought about whether this was all going to be pulled off, or if he had just sent his best friend into the lion's den. He moved away to a bench and began to arrange equipment ready for Peter's return, so he could straight away begin on the gene cleanser. It shouldn't take long to make, as long as the Oz formula was similar enough to the plans he had come across in the Oscorp files.
Gwen stood watching her boyfriend, sensing the internal conflict he was having over all that was going on. He can do this, she thought. He is nothing like his father. Harry is brave, loving, friendly and so handsome. She was the luckiest girl in the world and she would be right behind him, supporting him through this.
Over the city Peter swung from building to building, Oscorp in his sights. Using the information Harry had loaded onto his mask lenses, he navigated his way towards a large concrete out building, adjacent to the main Oscorp development centre. He landed on the roof softly, making sure he kept any noise down to a minimum, so the guards weren't alerted to him being there.
Peter looked round and saw the air-vent that he needed to get into. Moving over, he gently bent the metal cover, bringing it away from the main pipe, allowing him access to it. Sliding himself in feet first, he began to descend into the pipe, using his spider abilities to keep him stuck to the wall of the pipe so he didn't fall.
Soon he reached the bottom of the pipe, where the main ventilation pipes connected to the one he was in. He then realized that it would have been easier if he had come down head first, but with a little body contortion, he manoeuvred into the correct position and began to crawl along until he came to the next vent cover.
Carefully he put some pressure onto it, the metal beginning to creak and buckle. However, he placed a little too much pressure onto it and the cover flew off, falling down into the room below. Thinking quickly, Peter shot a web and just managed to catch it before it clattered down onto the floor. Pulling it up, he webbed it to the outside of the pipe, so it wouldn't fall again.
He lowered himself out of the pipe and crawled along the outside, looking down into the room below. It was unlike any room he had ever seen. The floor was dark grey marble, with streaks of dark green running through it. The walls were lined with various cabinets and worktops, full of a variety of interesting looking objects. Right at the end of the room there was a raised platform, upon which stood a plinth holding a rack of vials full of green liquid. Peter noticed that the plate on which the rack was standing had a small LED next to it, also coloured green. A pressure plate he deduced.
Glancing over his shoulder, he spotted the reinforced steel door that sealed the vault off to the outside world. Webbing over to it, he landed on the smooth surface making sure he didn't slide down and hit the floor. Leaning over to the door panel, he pulled off the front and looked at the wires inside. Carefully and quickly, he assessed the connections and using the plan's on his mask lens, deduced the wires to pull and then disabled the panel on the other side. Reaching into his boot, and pulled out the red labelled canister. Aiming it in at the edges of the door, he sprayed and watched at the solution inside bonded to the metal and 'welded' the doors shut.
Once he was satisfied the doors were sealed, he began to climb around the wall towards the Oz formula. Once he reached the plinth, Peter shot a web up to the ceiling and moved off the wall onto it. Changing his orientation so he was upside down, he leaned in to get a good look at the pressure plate. Making sure he didn't touch it, he moved around looking for a way of getting the necessary formula, but without setting the alarms off.
He was about to reach forward, when he heard banging on the vault door. Somebody was trying to get in. There were muffled shouts from the other side as they tried to get the doors open. Suddenly the vault was bathed in red lighting as alarms began to blare all around. Considering the alarms were going off, Spider-Man decided that he couldn't make things worse, so grabbed two vials and began to work his way back to the air vent.
As he did so, the pounding on the vault door began to increase, so much so that the metal was beginning to buckle under the pressure. Whatever was doing that had immense power... 'Norman' Peter thought. A hole suddenly appeared in the metal, a large green deformed hand following through it. Peter sat there on the wall transfixed by what was happening.
The hole increased in size and soon, the large deformed figure of Norman Osborn threw himself through the remains of the buckled door. Peter stared at him, watching his every move. Norman stalked around the room sniffing the air, as if he could detect Peter's scent. When he reached the dais where the Oz formula sat, he roared out in anger at the missing vials. Peter began to edge along the pipe back to the hole. In doing so however, he managed to knock off the cover he had webbed to the side, causing it to tumble back down to the ground.
The cover clattered down on to the floor, making an almighty sound. Norman whipped his head round at the sound and glanced upwards, spotting Spider-Man clambering through the vent. He let out another roar and grabbed the remaining vials of Oz. Uncapping them, he rammed them into his arm and pushed the liquid into his bloodstream.
Peter was glad he had decided to leave when he did. The sounds that were now echoing up the air vent was making his blood curdle. He had reached the top of the building and was running across the roof, ready to swing his way back to where Harry was waiting. As he jumped and shot a web, he heard an almighty crash behind him. Glancing back he saw a large green beast had smashed his way through the side of the building. When it saw him it let out a deep roar.
"I'll get you Spider-Man!" Osborn screamed.
Peter continued to swing away, getting back to the house as fast as he could. He tumbled in to the attic and then ran down the stairs. Harry had completely transformed the room into a lab while he had been gone.
"Excellent, did you have any trouble?" Harry asked.
"What, you mean you weren't watching?" Peter asked panting.
"No sorry, I was a little busy."
Peter recounted what had happened at Oscorp.
"I'm going to need to get this done super-fast then. This is when I need superpowers."
Harry took the vials from Peter and sat down at his bench, readying all the equipment. He began to draw off samples and run them through various machines and combined them with other chemicals he had to hand.
Peter was watching his friend in fascination, when suddenly the room was bathed in red flashing lights and an alert came on screen.
"It's your dad," Gwen said, checking the console. "He is attacking the Bugle."
"Let him, that Jameson is a mean guy," Harry said.
"Harry Osborne!" Gwen scolded.
"Sorry," he said sheepishly. "It was only a joke."
"Looks like I am up again," Peter said.
"Be careful Peter," Gwen said as she watched him disappear again off to save the people of New York.
She turned back to see how Harry was getting on. As she did so, she was sure she spotted him palm a small vial and put it in his pocket, but she couldn't be certain.
Peter continued to swing through the city towards the domain of J. Jonah Jameson. That man had done everything to try and discredit Spider-Man, now it was time to see if he wanted his help.
He arrived at the Bugle offices and landed on the roof. He had seen a large gaping hole in the top floor of the building as he had approached. Shouting was coming from below his feet. He quickly thought of a plan to get in without being seen. Creeping over to the roof door, he carefully pulled it open and moved inside and down the stairs.
Meanwhile inside, J. Jonah Jameson was lying sprawled against his office wall, the Goblin standing over him.
"Who takes the photos of Spider-Man Jameson, I won't ask again?" the Goblin asked him menacingly.
"Why would I tell you that? What do I have to gain from it?" Jameson replied.
"Because I am going to find Spider-Man and reveal his identity to the world and then I am going to destroy him."
"You know how much I would love to know Spider-Man's identity, but I would never let you kill a man over it."
Jameson reached his hand slowly to a hidden compartment in the side of a cabinet that he was right next to. Carefully he reached inside and pulled out a small hand gun. As quickly as he could, he brought the gun up and fired all of its rounds at the Goblin. When it was spent, he let the gun fall to the floor. To his shock and horror, the Goblin wasn't affected; the bullets had just bounced off of his body.
"Hahahahahaha!" the Goblin burst into laughter at Jameson's feeble attempt to stop him.
"Did you really think that would stop me?" he asked.
"No not really, but I hoped it would distract you for a moment."
As soon as he said that, Spider-Man came flying through one of the windows that overlooked the newsroom. He flipped round and slammed his feet into the Goblin's side, pushing him away from Jameson.
"Spider-Man, how nice to see you."
"It might be nice for you, but it isn't for me."
"Well said. Now are you going to make this easier for me or harder?"
"Oh I think I am going to make this hard for you," Spider-Man said.
"Well then, shall we?"
"Lets."
The two launched themselves at each other, Spider-Man dodging the punches thrown by the Goblin and then managing to land a few of his own. However after a few minutes of this, the Goblin caught him off guard and caught hold of him. He ripped the mask off of Spider-Man and when he saw his face, took a double take and dropped him down to the ground.
"Parker, you are Spider-Man?" Jameson breathed.
"The best friend of my own son is the one going against me, the one I have always felt was more like the son I wanted," the Goblin grimaced.
"Yes it is me, but that shouldn't make a difference, because I will still stop you," Peter said, shooting a web out and catching his mask with it. Sliding it on, he jumped up and ran to the hole in the side of the building.
"If you want me, you're going to have to follow me."
With that, he jumped out into the night sky and began to swing away from the city centre, in an attempt to lead the Goblin to somewhere innocent people wouldn't get hurt. The Goblin roared with anger and followed him. He jumped out of the building and landed on a glider that followed at top speed.
Back at the house, Harry was continuing to mix various chemicals together, with Gwen monitoring what was going on with Peter.
"Oh my goodness, your dad and Jameson just discovered Peter's identity," Gwen said looking over at Harry in shock.
Harry glanced up at her and then back down to his work.
"All the more reason to get this finished then."
"How much longer do you need?"
"Not long now."
Gwen turned back to the screen, but in the corner of her eyes, watched Harry. When he thought she wasn't watching, he pricked his finger with a needle and dropped a few beads of his blood into a flask of blue liquid. This then fizzed and tuned a deep royal purple colour. Gwen had suspicions he wasn't just working on a gene cleanser, but then she wasn't sure what made up a gene cleanser.
Harry began to finalize the mixing together of the solutions and took a syringe, filling it up with a set amount.
Back in the city, Peter was leading the Goblin away as fast of he could, but suddenly he was taken off guard as a large weight landed in his back, forcing him down to the street. He managed to twist his body free and land safely, but it wasn't as soft as we wanted.
Clambering to his feet, he saw the Goblin had been the one to force him down.
"Come on then Parker, let's do this."
"You won't win Goblin, i won't let you."
The Goblin didn't reply, but just gave a small chuckle. With that they locked horns once more, beginning to fight to stop one another.
At the house Harry and Gwen were watching as the fight began.
"We have got to do something," Gwen squealed in shock, "Have you got the cleanser ready?"
"Yes, but there is something else we can do as well."
Harry held up the syringe Gwen had seen him filling up.
"Is that what I think it is?" she asked.
"That depends on what you think it is. I think it is the last chance we have."
"Harry please don't do this, there must be another way," Gwen pleaded.
"I think we have expended those other ways, this has to be done."
