Hah this chapter is me prolonging the inevitable. Think of it as a filler. Thanks for the reviews! And the favs and alerts. I guess my plot hasn't completely turned everyone off this story since there is no drastic decrease in the number of favs/alerts so yay! Thank you so much for wanting to stay with this crazy story (Unless half of you aren't active on Fanfic and don't actually read this story anymore...).
FAMILY
There were a lot of things he omitted from his mother... he was aware that she and his father spent a relatively short time together before they were separated...he was also aware that his father may actually have had an Augment lover who was amongst the frozen seventy two. Whether or not his father's feelings had wavered in favor towards his human mother, he was unsure, but after he told his mother the truth, she had merely nodded and went 'oh'. Then she walked off, presumably to dwell more on his words.
It was late in the evening when he passed his parent's quarters on the way to the medbay where he would sleep for tonight; he stopped in his pace and decided to take a sneaky peek through the door's tiny window to see his mother seated on the edge of the bed whilst his father stood facing the wall where a complex, hand-drawn diagram of the Vengeance was pinned up. The diagram was incredibly detailed despite being drawn from nothing but memory.
Omega watched his mother as she played with one of the babies – it was himself - and he winced slightly at the sight. He had been feeling awkward whenever he would see something like this happen. It was even stranger witnessing himself when he was a baby and dressed in nothing but diapers and completely oblivious to the world. He watched his baby-self lying on his back on the blanket trying to eat his own toes whilst his brother was beside him, fast asleep. Meanwhile, his mother was giggling and tickling his belly affectionately although it seemed to elicit no laughter from the baby.
"You're a serious baby, aren't you," She murmured as his baby-self merely stared up at her. He was, in fact, a very serious baby, "I met your eighteen year old self today...he's so calm and cool...I'm so proud of you..."
This time Omega did not wince, although there was an uncomfortable pang settling deep in the bottom of his gut.
"You were so brave to protect me from that Anti-Augment...you just came in and began fighting them off...You've grown up so well," She added before she lifted him off the blanket and into her arms. The baby was now resting his little cheek against her shoulder and she rubbed at his back soothingly. "You're a good baby, aren't you? You're my good baby..."
His baby-self in her arms yawned in response and began to close his eyes, trying to sleep.
"Khan?" said mother.
Father turned round expectantly.
"...Sonny's upset." She said with a sigh, and he knew she was talking about eighteen year old Omega, not baby Omega who was in mother's arms and drooling over her shoulder. "I told him some things, some things that I thought he ought to know, and I don't think he's taken it very well."
"What was he expecting." muttered father, "That my pursuit of you was passionate, extensive and arduous?"
She blushed slightly, "Well...he's upset that we aren't married or engaged." Mother then let out a gasp of horror, "N-not that I'm saying that we s-should get married or anything...No, that's not what I-I'm trying to say at all..."
"It is unattractive to stutter, Jane."
"Khan, I'm serious!"
"Did you tell him?"
"Tell him about what?"
When Khan turned round, Jane stared up and their eyes met. A few seconds passed. Her eyes widened, then she quietly said, "Oh...you mean...that." She murmured, "No, I haven't."
"Why?"
"Because it happened in the past, almost a year ago, the circumstances have changed, and I also feel different towards you now."
"He has a right to know."
"He doesn't have to know. It's something better left unknown and unsaid." She said, before she murmured, "It'll hurt him. He will hate you."
As the conversation continued, Omega wondered what his parents were speaking about; was there something else about them he didn't know? Perhaps he would ask later. What else did his father do to hurt his mother in the past? Earnestly he could not comprehend how his parents even went together. They appeared to be complete polar opposites. Maybe it was true when they said opposites attract.
"Shall we get married." said father, and the subject was changed in seconds. Again, he had asked a question in such a cold tone it did not even sound like one.
"...I-I don't know. Do you? Do you want to get married, to me?" Mother squeaked out after a long silence, realizing the awkward situation she had unintentionally put herself in, "Look, I'm going to check up on Sonny." She said hastily before he could reply, determined to change the subject, "Do you want to come with me?"
He shook his head. "He is outside."
Mother gawked wide-eyed then turned to the door and Omega stepped away immediately when she walked over and opened the door to see him standing in the corridor awkwardly.
"I-I was not eavesdropping." Omega stammered out.
"Do you want to come in?"
He shook his head furiously. "No, thank you; I shouldn't bother you. Goodnight, mother, goodnight father."
"No, don't be silly. Come in, come in, you aren't bothering us at all. Right, Khan?"
His father merely grunted in response and Omega went rigid as Jane grabbed his arm and promptly led him into their tiny room. She sat down on the bed again and propped his baby-self in her lap, making him wiggle his arms and legs whilst Omega stood in the cramped space limply. "...What are you doing?" He asked, "Where are we headed?"
"To Jupiter." His father remarked without looking at him from over his shoulder.
"Where the Vengeance's construction dock is?"
"Yes," replied Khan, "We will be leaving earth."
We? Omega hoped that 'we' encompassed him, too.
"Why don't you help your father?" asked Jane, as she continued to play around with the baby, making him stand on her knees before she began lifting him up in the air and back down, "If you excuse me, I'm going to change your diaper and powder your bottom..."
Omega's face went abnormally red as Jane sidled out of the room with his baby-self in her arms, tittering to herself with glee. With Jane gone, he turned to Khan who was staring at the diagram on the wall extensively. "...Father, do you need assistance?"
"I do not require assistance," He replied stoically, and Omega felt foolish for simply being in the same room as his father, "...However, I want you to promise me one thing."
"Yes, father?"
"Promise me that you will protect your mother." Khan said, "No matter what happens."
Omega was surprised Khan had even used the word 'mother', indicating that he may have accepted Omega as his son. He nodded thoroughly in response, "I promise."
Khan studied him for a while, then mirrored his notion and nodded in acknowledgement. "...Very good," He muttered, "You may remain here as long as you wish."
A few moments later and Jane returned, smiling widely at the duo as she held his baby-self in her arms. "What'd I miss?" She asked, noticing that Omega was sitting on the bed, holding his little brother in his arms whilst Khan was drawing on the diagram with a black pen. She couldn't help but notice that maybe they had managed to bond over the short period of time.
"I believe it is time for me to retire," Omega said, "It's getting late. Goodnight mother, goodnight father."
"G'night, son." She said, "...Do you want me to tuck you in?"
"No, that won't be necessary." Omega muttered and swiftly left the room, closed the door behind him and stood in the corridor; he could not stop himself from returning to the window of the door, peering in once more. He could see his mother and father talking before his father went to embrace his mother. He watched them for a few more moments to see his mother handing him his baby-self and father scooped his baby-self out of mother's arms and into his own, holding him gingerly, rubbing at his back much like how mother did before. He watched on for longer, then turned away when he realized it seemed to hurt him to watch them, knowing what had happened to him and his parents, when the life he could have led (if neither of the things that happened in his life had happened) was playing right in front of him.
It should be like this, but it also shouldn't be like this, he thought to himself, Father is a war criminal. Mother is a human dragged into the whole affair. They will never be allowed to go together. Mother will always be a traitor. Father will always be a fugitive.
Omega retreated miserably to the medbay where the biobed awaited him. The ship was too small and it was either he sleep in the captain's chair or the only available bed – the one in the medbay. Inevitably he picked the medbay.
He sat down on the edge of the biobed and glumly concentrated his current predicament; wondering how he would be able to save his mother and himself and his baby brother. He had no idea what would happen, when Khan would 'choose his crew over his mother and brother'. When it did happen, what would he do then? What if his father didn't do what he did in and chose his family instead of his crew as the past was always susceptible to change?
Rubbing at his tired eyes, he lay down, pulled over his makeshift blanket which consisted of his trenchcoat and stared up at the dark ceiling. Perhaps his arrival had actually made things worse...maybe they were better off not knowing him, not knowing who he was? He sighed and closed his eyes and haunting memories of his life began to appear. He spent his life running. He spent his life as a fugitive. He did not want this life, not anymore.
LATER
Jane woke up in the middle of the night because one of the twins had begun crying again. She rubbed at her eyes, allowing them to adjust to the darkness. Khan was lying beside her and she had been curled up beside him on the bed, stuck in his tight embrace.
He appeared to be fast asleep; he was at the edge of the small bed, his arm around her with the side of her face resting comfortably over his chest. The babies were wrapped up in a blanket in a small cot near the bed. Sitting up, she avoided hitting her head against the low ceiling of the room and glanced over to see one of the twins kicking around in the blanket. She crawled over Khan and out of the bed, then waddled to the cot and lifted out the crying baby – this time it was the eldest baby, which she thought was strange since he rarely cried at night.
"What's wrong?" She asked as she hugged him, carrying him over to the window where they could see nothing but the comforting darkness of space. Outside, it was silent. She took the baby closer to the window so he could see the distant outline of earth and the stars and the other planets they had passed.
"Isn't the view breathtaking?" She murmured, and the baby ceased its crying for temporary; she hadn't mentioned this to Khan or anyone for that mattered but she thought although he was a baby, he was very smart and understood every word she was saying, "We're in space. There's so much...so, so much we still haven't discovered yet...isn't this world amazing? Life's too short. You have to make the most of it, you know."
She turned to the baby then and the baby looked at her in return.
"What's the matter, hm?" She said with a smile, "You're all quiet now. It's because I'm holding you, isn't it?"
The baby blinked at her with those blue eyes of his and opened his mouth, "...Ah...mah...ma...bah..." He cooed out incoherently, and she giggled, kissing him on the cheek. The baby began to struggle in her grip then.
"Alright, alright, you clearly don't like me smothering you. But I can't help it, you know, you are just too adorable..." She muttered, as the baby placed his chubby, squidgy palm over her nose and mouth, squashing his little hands over her face. For a baby, she noticed that he had a startling amount of strength. "Ahhh...sweetie, no, don't do that – "
The baby was beginning to gurgle with laughter now and Jane began to lift the baby up into the air and down, going 'whooo' each time. It only served to make the baby laugh even louder and finally, Khan grunted.
Jane stopped immediately and held the baby close. "Khan?" She squeaked as the man stirred in bed, "...Sorry, did I wake you?"
"Come to bed, Jane." He muttered.
"Okay." She said, and she gave the baby one big wet kiss on the forehead before placing him back into his cot along with his brother. He kicked around and threw his little fists around as she tucked him under the baby blanky. Jane smiled and grabbed the 3D baby mobile, fastening it above the cot. She switched it on and watched the little 3D, multicolored, assorted shapes consisting of flowers, cars and big smiley faces began to project in midair. The baby stared hard at them, fascinated.
Jane smiled widely and when the hand landed on her shoulder, she almost leapt out of her skin until she realized it was only Khan joining her side. He wrapped his arm around her and rubbed at her shoulder affectionately as he stood beside her, watching the infants, then he turned and kissed her on the temple and she leaned against him with a gentle sigh.
"Watching them makes me really happy." She muttered, as Khan pressed on a random button of the baby mobile and gentle music began playing, which made him raise an eyebrow. She sighed loudly next. "...It's been a crazy day. Our eighteen year old son came all the way from the future to see us...Don't get me wrong, I think it's great – I still can't really believe it, he's exactly as I had imagined; proper, brave, strong, polite...But Mudd is gone...and my crew are...I mean, there's so much chaos and conflict...things are really getting out of control."
"Jane, I am getting closer and closer to my goal. When we arrive in Jupiter, we will leave using the Vengeance. I will take you with me along with my people, and we will live a peaceful, calm life. I will seek a planet we can colonize and cultivate, to begin anew." Khan murmured as he took her face in his hands, "And I want you by my side. We may not be wed, but you are my family. You are my wife, the mother of my children."
Her eyes widened in response and her mouth suddenly went dry. In fact, her mind went completely blank for a split second, unable to comprehend the words he had just said. Whilst Khan waited for her reply, she merely let her hands rest over his and smiled, "...Let's go to bed, shall we?"
Khan nodded and led her towards the bed; she slipped in first, inching under the duvet and moving to her side nearest the wall while Khan took the edge of the bed. He pulled the duvet over them both and as he made himself comfortable, Jane rolled to her side with her back to him, Khan followed her movement and draped his arm over her securely, bringing her close to him.
MUCH, MUCH LATER
The heat forced him awake and he opened his eyes, turned his head slightly to see Jane with her cheek smushing against his arm and her arm draped over his chest. Her forehead was pressed against his arm too, and it was abnormally warm.
Immediately, Khan sat up and Jane flopped over his discarded bedspace, her eyes still closed. "Jane?" He switched on the light of the room and pressed his cool palm over her forehead and she moaned and tried to swat his hand away. She was burning up. A fever. He had no idea why she was burning up or what may have brought it but he leapt into action and wrapped their blanket around her tightly, rolled her to lie on her back where he could see her hair plastered over the sides of her face. She was sweating profusely, moaning piteously.
"Jane." He called, but to no avail; Jane's eyebrows merely furrowed uncomfortably in response. "Jane!"
Khan left her side and departed from the room, heading towards the medbay. He stormed through the doorway as it whooshed open and the lights flickered on, alerting the snoozing Omega who immediately whipped up with his visor at the ready. Although when he saw Khan marching to the supplies cupboard, he lowered his arm which had been raised to strike. "Father?"
Khan ignored him, rummaging through the contents of the cupboard, pulling out bandages and first aid sprays. To his dismay, there were no more hyposprays for his taking and the rest of his supplies were primitive; the only items he had left was a bottle of old, gungy cough syrup and some indigestion tablets in capsule form. Useless. Growling, Khan left the medbay with Omega at his heels.
"Father, what's wrong?"
"Your mother is unwell."
"Unwell?!" Omega leapt off the biobed and dashed into the room where Jane was only to come to a stop when he saw her lying on the bed. "Mom?" There was no response from her as expected; Khan brushed past Omega and into the room, seating himself beside Jane on the bed. He tucked the blanket up to her chin but she merely groaned and moaned again. "What do we do? We have no supplies."
"She needs rest." Khan replied.
A few minutes later and one of the twins could be heard rasping and gurgling, stirring awake before one ultimately began bawling. Khan turned to the cot but Omega was quicker; he went to the crib and scooped himself and his brother out. Glancing at Khan, he said, "You need to look after her. She needs you."
Khan silently watched Omega stalk towards the doorway.
"I'll watch over my brother." He added, "For now, mom needs you." He decided not to wait for his father's consent and hurriedly left the room with the babies, switching the light off for them and closing the door behind him. Hopefully, he'd given his parents some much needed time together. Ever since they'd been born, Omega knew all too well his parents had their hands full with himself and his brother. Apparently he'd been told they were high maintenance at a certain point in his young life.
Khan was left alone with Jane. He felt a little tug on his sleeve and glanced down; she had opened her eyes, blinking at him sluggishly. "...Is everything okay...?" She croaked out, "How's Sonny doing...?"
"You should be more concerned with yourself." He muttered, scooping her little clammy hand in his, stroking the back of her palm with his thumb.
She appeared delirious as he held her hand. "Uhhh...I don't feel so good..."
"Yes, you are ill." He murmured, slipping into the bed beside her before he lifted her by under the arms and into his embrace. She was like a ragdoll in his arms, allowing him to practically drag her out of her spot on the mattress so she could sit in his lap, although her body felt weak all over and she slumped against him. Khan proceeded to bundle her up with the blanket, making sure every inch of her body was covered by the blanket and when she resembled a cocoon, he finished his task by pulling the remaining length of the blanket over her head.
"...Ill? I can't be ill..." She moaned out as he put a hand to her face and felt her forehead again; she was still burning up, "...I've never been ill since I joined Starfleet...my perfect attendance record...ohh..."
"You're not at Starfleet anymore, Jane." He reminded her as he removed his hand from her forehead to rub at the length of her arm; to his surprise, she grabbed his hand and planted it against her forehead, apparently enjoying how cool it was against her skin.
"Ahhh...your hand...it is so nice and cold..." She let out a relieved sigh; Jane had completely sprawled over him, eyes closed. He glimpsed around their room, at the empty cot, at the darkness outside the window. "The babies..."
"Hm?"
"The babies...Sonny..."
"He is looking after them for temporary. You are too ill to care for them."
"Ohh...noo..." She let out a rather high-pitched whine before she rubbed her face against his chest, trying to get comfortable. "...Khan...?"
"Yes, Jane?"
Her eyebrows were knitting tightly together once more as she muttered, "Don't leave...Don't leave me behind..."
That took him by surprise and he wrapped his arms around her a little tighter than before. "Did you forget my words?" He murmured, "Jane, you are the mother of my children. It is you who have always been by my side. I treasure you and I cherish you."
But she didn't appear to have heard. "Khan, don't leave me...or the babies...you're all I have..." She continued to mutter. And she kept murmuring those words all night.
When Jane awoke, several hours had passed and Khan was missing from the bed. She shot upwards, glancing around the empty room. Her head was still throbbing but at least she still had some much-needed sleep so she felt slightly better than usual. "Khan?" She slid out of the bed and grabbed her shoes, sliding her feet into them before standing up. To her relief, her legs had healed and she was no longer limping. She hurried over to the cot to see that the babies were there and fast asleep beside each other.
Jane scooped both of the babies from the cot and into her arms; they remained asleep, which she was thankful for, and she strode to the door as quickly as possible and entered the corridor. Seeing no-one, she marched into the cockpit and saw no-one there too. She strolled to the main lounge next where she could see Khan and Omega apparently engaged in a wrestling match; the sofa was pushed against the far wall to create an ample amount of space, and Khan had Omega in a headlock with his arm pressed tightly against Omega's throat, his arm pulled behind him.
"Ah, stop!" She cried, but Khan did not let go of Omega despite her intervention.
"Mom!" Omega croaked out as Khan applied more pressure to the headlock, "It's okay, father is teaching me a new technique."
"Huh?" She squeaked, "Oh."
"Kata ha jime." Khan muttered, "A chokehold that exerts pressure on the carotid arteries with minimal pressure applied to the windpipe. The opponent's left arm is controlled via this technique as demonstrated as thus-" He proceeded to pull Omega's helpless arm behind him which caused him to cry out.
As Jane watched, she stifled a giggle at the sight as Khan released Omega, who rubbed at his neck slightly. "Thank you, father. This will be most useful when disabling opponents."
Khan gave him a nod and moved to Jane, inspecting her and the babies. "You should not be here. You need rest." He murmured in her ear.
"I'm fine now." She said, and he placed his palm over her forehead. She'd cooled down but it didn't mean she was getting any better. "I didn't mean to interrupt your lesson."
He shook his head and took her hand, squeezing it tightly with his own. "Come Jane, I will escort you back to the room."
"No, no need. I want to stay here and watch you guys." She replied, and Khan frowned as Omega merely stared blankly at her. "Let's see your moves, kid." To Khan's accumulating dismay, Jane strolled to a safe corner and gestured for them to continue.
Khan turned to Omega, who was nodding rather enthusiastically now. He moved to the middle of the room and barked out, "Get into position. The way I taught you." And Omega nodded again and moved opposite Khan. "You are standing with your legs too far apart. Closer. Not too close. Do not move your right. Move your left leg a fraction. Stop. There."
"...Am I doing this right?"
"It will take practice. I will now teach you a technique from the martial art known as musti-yuddha. This form of martial art utilizes punches, kicks, knees and elbow strikes..."
As Khan demonstrated and Omega stared at the display keenly, Jane watched with a growing smile on her face.
Meanwhile, Jupiter loomed closer and closer into view.
I've always wanted to write a scene where either Khan or Jane becomes ill (although I don't think Khan would be ill) so we have this. It's probably OOC but I really wanted to write it hehe. I also didn't know if its was right for Jane to have become dependent on Khan, but I think deep inside she has a fear of being left behind/forgotten despite some of the circumstances.
Anyway, I was thinking of finishing this story real soon but since this chapter actually has prolonged the end because I can't decide if I want to write a good or bad ending. Good endings feel like, you know, 'yay all stories should have a good end' and you'll finish this story with a smile on your face and feeling happy but I feel a bad ending might fit better. You're welcome to drop a comment to let me know what you think.
