Jari knew he had to make up a lie, and fast. His brain quickly formulated a name and backstory. He looked back at the girl, her eyes piercing through him, and in a moment his backstory was gone, and his mouth was working again, but this time forgetting to carry along his brain.
"Jari," he said, "Jari Jorgenson," he said, trying to stop himself from trembling in the cold.
Her eyes widened and she took steps back, eyes darting wildly as though she assumed that he'd come armed or prepared or whatever. Clearly, though, she was overestimating him.
"What business do you have on this island?" she hissed.
"I've come to warn you," he decided, despite it being the furthest from the actual thing he'd come to do, "I came to warn you about my father. He's amassed a giant army of nearly a hundred thousand soldiers, and he's heading for your island."
She looked at him suspiciously, "And what, may I ask, do you gain from coming here to tell us this?"
He decided throwing in a bit of truth wouldn't hurt. "I want to help you. My father was once a kind mind but has grown wicked in his quest to obtain something that was never truly his. He is in a tunnel and I am afraid his torch has burned out before he could quite reach the end, he sees nothing but darkness. I don't want people to get hurt because of this, it's ridiculous. You're a dragonrider, our fathers were once of kin, but it only ever serves to ignite my father's hate whenever he is reminded of this. He is not serving the people of Berk, my people, once even your people, to the best of his capabilities and I believe that it is time his rule came to an end. So I implore you to allow me to assist you in this time of darkness," he said.
Hayley blinked at him in bewilderment.
Maybe he shouldn't have gotten so carried away. After all, what he said about overthrowing his father was true, and he'd been thinking about it for years now. He'd never truly liked the man, always played along with whatever he said, but anyone looking close enough could see it for what it was. A lie. A ruse. A trick. Call it what you wanted, it wasn't genuine.
He'd never truly been close to his father. How could he? The man was full of hate and spite. Never treated his mother right, never spent time with their family, never cared about anyone or anything except for his unhealthy infatuation with the Hofferson girl. And Jari hated it.
So yes, he wasn't fond of the man. And yes, he did believe Berk would be a much better place once he had passed. But it had never been his intention to kill him. At least- not at this moment of time. Certainly not on this trip. He'd figured he'd have time to later, time to do a whole bunch of stuff that could potentially end with his father dead. The Archipelago's annual sword fighting competition, perhaps?
But now that he said it aloud, it just suddenly felt like the right time to do it. The right time to end it all. End the suffering, the pain, the misery. There were so many advantages to having dragons around and when he was chief, it was the first thing that was going to happen. Sure he was a little unsure about it, but there would be time for uncertainties and doubts to arise, and now was not the time.
"Sorry," he said, noticing that Haley was still staring at him, "I have a tendency of being long-winded."
"No," she said, snapping out of her shock, "Not at all… Jari," she said analyzing him. She bit her lip.
.
"So what you're saying is that you would willingly sacrifice your life and family, in order to fight a losing battle with us?" Brant asked, equally as bewildered as Hayley had been only moments previous.
Jari nodded.
Brant looked unsure of whether or not to trust the boy. After all, he was the son of one of their island's most feared enemies. But at the same time the boy seemed sincere, and the dragon's weren't picking up anything wrong with him, so he must be trustworthy, right?
He sighed. Contrary to popular belief, he was not his father. He was not wise, and he was tired of people expecting him to be. He wasn't much like his mother either, she had good instincts and was one of the best- if not the best- warrior on the island. The only thing he truly seemed to inherit, from any part however distant, of the family, was that he enjoyed tinkering. And even he had to admit that some of the things he created were amazing.
Reviewed by his father here and there, but nevertheless they were his and he couldn't be anymore proud of how some of them turned out. For example, when Snotlout's battalion set siege on Berk, there would be some unwelcoming surprises. What surprises? Well, who's to say? It's not like a thirteen year old spent 5 years coming up with the most complex booby traps lest anyone shall try to visit their island uninvited.
Right?
"I think it's best you head back now," Brant said, "Hayley will take you to the outer edges of our camp, but I'm afraid from there you'll have to walk."
Jari nodded, barely able to contain his excitement.
They had a plan, things were finally going somewhere.

haha, there's part 1 of the ones I have to do :) sadly it looks like I'll only be updating 3 stories since I only received 3 different titles. 2 of them were kind of expected seeing as out of all my stories they have the most follows. The 3rd one… I'm not sure if it qualified as a request, but I'll take it anyways. Just in case you're wondering, the 3 were:
1. What if?
2. HTTYD toothcup style
and, surprisingly 3. Babysitting adventures. So I'll post the next update's day at the end of each chapter for now to make it easier.
