"Well.. Lifespans.. Certain people don't have them."

L blinked widely as he processed what Beyond was trying to tell him, biting his thumb nail as he normally did when thinking. "What do you mean, Beyond..?" B sighed, licking his lips and looking down at his lap. "I mean.. There was this girl I saw at Aoyama.. Which you can see in the tape. That's why I looked so shocked.. She had a name, although I can't remember what it was.. I didn't have enough time to translate the Kanji writing.. But there was an empty space where her lifespan should've been. And she walked really quickly past me, I got lost in the crowd.."

The detective sighed with disappointment, removing his thumb from his mouth and clasping his hands together instead on his lap. "H-Hey, I tried, okay? I really did, and I was so mad at myself when I lost her-!" Beyond jumped to immediately defend himself. "Calm down, Beyond.. I'm not upset with you.. Even though I only have your word to go on, it still counts as evidence that the second Kira could be female." L cleared his throat, popping another small candy from the dish beside him into his mouth.

"The second Kira.. So you think she could've been the second Kira too?" Beyond raised an eyebrow, even though he wasn't at all surprised him and L shared the same theory. "Yes, there's an 80% chance.. Beyond, did the thought occur to you that she could be a Shinigami, and not even human?" He asked quietly. "..Yeah.. It did.." B rubbed the back of his neck, silent for a moment. "But could we really arrest a Shinigami..?" "Yes. Or at least get it to go back wherever it came from." L waved his hand dismissively, reaching for the cup of coffee Watari had brought him.

Beyond snickered and shrugged his shoulders. "This is all so confusing.." "Mm, that it is.." L agreed. "But um.." B started again, biting his bottom lip. The detective looked back up and blinked, giving him an expecting glance. "Yes?" "What if.. Yagami didn't have a lifespan?" Beyond asked slowly. "..Then the changes of Light Yagami being Kira would increase by over 90%.. What are you trying to tell me, Beyond?" "B-But even if he didn't have a lifespan, there still wouldn't be any solid evidence of him being Kira." B pointed out, unsure of why he was trying to defend the possible serial killer.

"I suppose you're right.. We could hardly go about that, no one would believe you about your eyes anyway." L shrugged. Beyond glared at him and huffed, even though they both knew it was true. "...Does he..?" L asked suddenly, looking over at the other. "Does who what?" B asked. "Does Light Yagami have a lifespan?"

Beyond opened his mouth, as if to answer, but quickly shut it once Watari stepped into the room, a phone in his right hand. "Ryuzaki, it's Roger Ruvie from Wammy's House. I believe you scheduled to talk to the Wammy's students via your laptop today." B sighed with.. Relief?.. When L was called away. The young detective stood and paused the security footage from Aoyama, shutting off the TV and leaving his sweets with coffee behind. "Yes, I believe I did.. Please set it up for me at the table." He instructed Watari before walking over to sit. "Beyond, it's getting pretty late.. If you'd like to go to sleep now, you should."

B nodded his head and stood, drinking of the last of his coffee and screwing the lid back on his strawberry jam jar before leaving. He walked past the other and ruffled his hair a bit with a smirk, unable to resist touching him when he passed. Beyond closed the door after entering their shared bedroom and flopped down on the bed, feeling too lazy to change out of his black hoodie and jeans and into some sleep pants. He pulled off his clothes instead, only leaving him in boxers and crawling under the covers. It didn't take long for him to fall asleep, which was good, he didn't want to have Light Yagami's lack of a lifespan or the mystery girl on his mind any longer tonight.

The next afternoon wasn't any better than the previous one for Beyond, having to sit by himself on the couch while L reviewed yet another tape. Even though it looked to be the last one that would come from the second Kira, B was still bored without his lover beside him. "Should've never let him leave that warehouse." He grunted to himself, earning a slight glare from L while no one else seemed to notice.

The door opened and closed behind Beyond without him paying much attention, of course L was able to notice new footsteps in the room without even having to turn around. "Hello." Light Yagami greeted, looking around and giving a nod in acknowledgment to the task force. "Oh, come in. Your timing couldn't be better, actually." L barely turned his head to greet Light, still facing the TV in front of him. Light placed his bag down on the table and turned back towards L. "Hm?" "We just recieved a new video message from the second Kira." L informed him. "Huh? Well.. That didn't take long." Light commented. "Yes.. I believe it's the last one. Well, take a look at.. This." The raven pressed the play button on the remote, glancing up at Light as they watched.

"I decided to stop searching for Kira, and I'd like to thank the police department for their advice. However, I still plan to help Kira in his mission. And I hope that, in time, he will come to see me as an ally. I will start by punishing criminals that Kira has yet to judge. Also, I will share my powers with others who I feel are worthy, and I will encourage them to do the same. Together, we'll make this world a better place."

The message ended abruptly at that, TV screen going black and the detective's attention turned back to Light. "After watching this.. I can only think that Kira and the second Kira have managed to make contact." Light blinked, "What makes you say that?"

"Oh, c'mon.. Didn't you sense it? I was sure you'd come to the same conclusion I did after watching this once through." L shrugged, looking back down at the remote. He reached beside him and picked up a doughnut, licking his lips and taking a bite. "Mm, first, consider how determined he was to meet Kira. So why the sudden change of heart? Now he wants to punish criminals that Kira hasn't? All he wants out of it is for Kira to see him as an ally?" He swallowed. "It begs the question.. Why didn't he do this to begin with? I'm guessing it's because he never thought that far ahead. He probably met Kira and was told which criminals he'd be allowed to judge." L licked a few crumbs off his fingers and lips, eyes wandering back up to the brunette. "I suspect that the purpose of this message is to hide the fact that they met."

"I see.. What I find really strange is that it's unlike Kira to be so careless." Light commented. "That's true.." L nodded, taking another bite into his doughnut. "But are we to believe that Kira made a mistake this time? Or is this his way of letting us know that they made contact? It would be an effective means of provoking us. The idea of their union is very threatening... However this is also one less reason to suspect that Light is Kira." L sighed. "Ryuzaki, what do you mean by that?" Soichiro asked, suddenly more interested in the conversation.

"If Light is Kira, I don't think this is the message he would've had the second Kira send us, it doesn't fit. He would've made the second Kira go through with his plan to have me appear on TV. And deny that they ever made contact, by allowing the second Kira to take the blame for my death.. He'd make him say something.. Like.." L licked the chocolate frosting off his doughnut, thinking for a moment before saying what he thought Light would do. "Although I agree not to go through with this, I have come to realize that it was not Kira's true intention that I stop. I'm positive that the real Kira would want L to die, there's no way he'd make me stop." B blinked and eyed L's tongue on the doughnut, zoning out completely from the conversation and licking his lips.

"Ryuzaki.." Light started. "I think you're mistaken. I would never do that.. If I were Kira." "Why not?" L questioned. "Well if you're L and I'm Kira, then I'd already know your personality pretty well. L would never agree to appear on TV, no matter what threat he was facing. And he wouldn't allow someone else to die in his place. The L I know would find some way to escape the situation." Light shrugged. "So.. You figured it out?" A slight smirk appeared on L's lips, causing Beyond to snap out of his trance and look up.

"Look, Light, you've got to stop that. I don't like hearing you say 'If I were Kira', even hypothetically." Soichiro insisted. "Oh.. I'm sorry, Dad. I just wanted to let Ryuzaki know exactly what I thought of his plan. I posed that scenario because I want to help solve this case, it's the only chance I have to clear my name. Besides, the only reason I feel comfortable saying things like that is because I'm not really Kira." Light explained.

"That's.. A good point." L spoke up, dropping two more sugar cubes into his cup of coffee. "You're not Kira.. That is.. It would be a problem.. If you were Kira." He sighed, stirring his spoon in absentminded circles inside the cup. "Because..

I feel you're the first friend that I've ever had."

Light's eyes grew wide at this, and the sound of a strawberry jam jar clattering to the ground could be heard behind L. The detective barely turned to see what was wrong, blinking with an unamused expression back at Beyond's surprised one. The younger raven glared and stood from his spot, not bothering to pick up the mess he made with shattered glass and the sticky red substance that spilled, walking quickly into the bedroom and trying not to stomp his feet in a childish manor. He huffed and kicked the door shut behind him, a muffled 'This is ridiculous!' Could be heard in the room from B.

"..He'll get over it.." L dismissed the younger raven's behavior, although his heart dropped in his chest from Beyond's expression. Didn't he realize what L was trying to do? So foolish.. Didn't he see? L was only trying to provoke a reaction from the brunette, he never once did and never would consider Light a friend.. It was only a lie.. Beyond was his best friend, Beyond was the love of his life. How could he honestly think L was telling the truth?

Light cleared his throat and tore his gaze away from the door that had been slammed shut, looking down at the detective with a still slightly shocked expression. "Well, I.. Know what you mean.. The two of us have a lot in common.. And, I have missed having you around at school.. We should play tennis again soon." Light offered a smile, surprised to find that it was actually genuine. For some reason, L's words did have sort of an effect on him..

"Yes.. We should." L agreed with a nod, taking another sip from his cup of coffee. He glanced back over at the white door his lover was behind, rolling his eyes. 'So foolish.' He thought to himself, placing the cup back down on its plate.
