Chapter 20:
Tris's POV
I can see the Amity farms in the distance. We're getting closer. My leg hurts like hell and I'm getting weaker by the moment. Tobias knows that something's wrong, even though I don't show it. He gives me a worried look but doesn't say anything.
The trees are becoming thicker as we walk and I take that as a good sign. I see the Amity farms and I mentally cheer.
By the time we reach the gate, I'm almost panting. Blood is beginning to drop down my leg again. The gates open and we walk through. It feels nice to be inside the walls of Chicago again. This is a change of scenery compared to The Fringe. I see the train coming and I get ready to run.
It passes with a loud roar and I grab a handle. I swing myself in and sit against the wall. My head is pounding and I'm starting to feel nauseous. Just a little bit longer, I tell myself. I can make it. One after another, they hop on the train, some having graceful landings and others not. Tobias is the last one on and he walks over to me. He sits down next to me, our bodies touching. Everytime we touch, I get this feeling, like electricity running through my veins. I turn my head and look at him. He has dark circles under his eyes, stubble on his chin and his hair has grown out a little bit. His eyes are still the same icy cold blue though. How did I let this happen to him?
He leans in and I meet his lips halfway. It feels like its been forever since I've done this, even though it's only been several days. I smile and he smiles back. He pulls back a little and rests his forehead against mine.
"I missed you so much," he whispers.
"Me too,"
He pecks me on the lips and the pulls back completely. He picks up my right leg to examine it and I wince. His face is a mask of worry. He carefully puts my leg back down and looks at me.
"It'll be fine," I say shrugging my shoulder.
"Tris," he says, raising his eyebrows. I know what he's thinking. You're not okay. let me help you.
I smile at him and slowly get up. I limp over to Christina who is staring at her feet. I put a hand on her shoulder and she turns around to face me. Her face instantly brightens up at the sight of me.
"It's over now," I say, slightly squeezing her shoulder.
She smiles slightly and pulls me into a tight hug. I missed my best friend so much. We pull apart, laughing. She smiles and by that I mean she really smiles. Not some phony smile but a real one.
"It's time," Zeke shouts over the wind.
Once the train passes the dauntless building, we all jump out. I get that flying sensation again and smile. I land on the ground but I don't stick the landing and I fall on my face. My leg hurts worse than it did before. I let out a small grunt as I get up and begin walking through the front door of the Dauntless building. Everytime I take a step, pain shoots through my right leg.
We all go our separate ways as we reach our apartments. We agreed to meet up tomorrow. I reach our apartment door and let out a sigh of relief. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep walking on this leg.
I walk inside and plop on the couch, happy to be able to sit down again. I look down at my leg and I groan. Blood is running down my bare skin. Tobias walks over, medical supplies in his hands. He kneels down in front of me and slowly pulls up my pant leg. He unties the knot and peels the cloth off of my skin. I wince. Blood rushes down my leg at an alarming rate. I'm becoming light headed.
"Tobias," I whisper weakly.
He keeps tending to my wound, obviously not hearing my plea.
"Tobias," I say a little bit louder.
He looks up and when he sees the look on my face, he swears under his breath.
"We need to get you to the infirmary," he says getting up.
I can't say anything. The pain in my head and leg is unbearable. Realizing that I can't walk, he picks me up bridal style and practically runs to the infirmary. the last thing I remember before I'm met with darkness, is shouting and Tobias whispering to me, "I love you."
Tobias's POV:
I hear Tris whisper my name and I look up. Her face is covered in pain and I know something's wrong. I look back down to her leg, which is gushing out blood. She needs medical attention and fast.
"Shit," I say under my breath. "We need to get you to the infirmary."
She doesn't say a word. I get up and pick her up bridal style. I know for a fact that she wouldn't be able to walk. I practically run to the infirmary. The doctors see Tris and her condition and start running around getting supplies. Everything is in chaos. Everyone is shouting and running around, it's crazy.
Someone brings up a bed on wheels and I carefully lay Tris on it. Her frail body looks so small compared to the big bed. She grips my hand, not letting me go. We're almost at the door and I know that they won't let me go past them. I grip her hand tighter, not wanting to lose her. The nurses are yelling at me to let go, that I'm not allowed back there.
Before I let go of her hand I whisper, putting as much love as I possibly can into my words, "I love you."
I let go of her hand and then she disappears behind the doors. My heart is shattering into pieces knowing that she might not be okay. I slowly walk out of the infirmary. I have to tell our friends. They deserve to know.
I'm in front of Christina's door and I slowly knock. She's Tris's best friend, she deserves to know first. The door swings open and Christina stands in the doorway. As soon as she sees my face she asks, "What's wrong?"
I walk in and sit down on her couch. I'm fighting back the tears that threaten to spill over. I tell her everything that happened and by the end, I don't stop the tears that run down my face. She gets up and sits down next to me, pulling me into a hug.
"Everything's going to be okay. Tris is a fighter. She'll do whatever it takes to get back to us. I know it," Christina says, pulling back.
I nod my head and wipe the tears off of my face. I stand up and say, "Thanks Christina. I should probably go and tell the others."
"Okay, I'll meet you at the infirmary," She says, getting up too.
Time Lapse
I've gotten all of our friends and I'm on my way back to the infirmary. Hopefully Tris is out of surgery now. I smile at the thought of seeing her. This girl is going to be the death of me.
I'm about to walk in but I stop. My smile quickly turns into frown. Christina is leaning against the wall crying. I walk over to her and she looks up at the sound of my footsteps. "What's wrong?' I ask.
"I just didn't want anyone to see me cry," She says wiping her cheeks. She sees my worried face and says, "There's no news yet."
"Oh," is all I say.
"Come on, lets go back inside," she says, beginning to walk towards the doors of the infirmary.
I hesitate but then walk in. Zeke, Shauna, Cara, Christina, Caleb and Matthew are talking in the corner of the waiting area. I walk over to them and lean against the wall. It's been over an hour since I rushed her here and she's still not out of surgery. That's not a good sign.
I see a doctor slowly walking over to us, his face grim. My heart beats faster the closer he gets.
"Tobias Eaton," He says, scanning our faces. Everyone has stopped talking.
"That's me," I say, stepping away from the wall.
"Beatrice-"
"It's Tris," I correct.
"Tris, made it out of surgery but there was some complications," he pauses for a moment but then continues. "She's in a coma and there's a 45 percent chance that she may never wake up."
She may never wake up. I can't believe this.
"The bullet hit a blood vessel and she lost a lot of blood. Luckily we got to her in time and she didn't lose her leg, or worse. She is very lucky. I'm so sorry Mr. Eaton. We had to transfer her to the Erudite, considering that they have more advanced equipment," The doctor says.
I just nod my head, not knowing what to say.
"If you go to see her, tell them that Dr. Richard sent you. Again Mr. Eaton, I'm so sorry," he says before turning around.
My body feels numb. I feel like I'm drowning while everyone else around me is breathing. I slowly turn around and see that Christina is crying into Cara's shoulder. Caleb is sitting on the ground his back to the wall, his head in his hands. Zeke and Shauna's faces are both grim.
"I'm going to the training room. I'll meet you guys at the Erudite," I say, gritting teeth.
I swiftly walk out of the room and head for the training rooms. I need to punch something. I walk in and instantly find the punching bags. I take out all of my anger and grief on the punching bag. My knuckles are becoming sore and bloody with every punch. My mother Evelyn is probably dead. Punch. Tris might never wake up. Kick. I was tortured. Double punch. For over a year, I thought Tris was dead. Another punch.
I keep punching and kicking until I have no fight left in me to keep going. I wipe the sweat off my face and walk over to a drinking fountain. I gulp down some water and make my way over to the Erudite building.
So I have several ideas for this story, but I feel like if I use them in this story that it will become very long, so after a few more chapters I think I'm going to make a sequel carrying on where this one leaves off. Please review telling me your ideas about this. Whether you think that this would be a good idea or if I should just keep adding to this story and a title for the sequel. It would be appreciated. :)
