Chapter 21 – Fireworks
Several days passed since the first kick of the baby. Now it was New Years Eve, and for once they were spending it with each other instead of with a corpse. It was a cold evening, and the moon shined bright.
Around 8:30 they started to hear the fireworks blasting, so they decided to watch. Grissom pulled the couch from inside the cabin out to the back porch and faced it toward the now frozen pond. He then went inside and grabbed some pillows to lean against the armrests.
He and Sara then donned their sweats, toboggans and some socks, and as soon as they were feeling comfy, they set out with a big blanket. Grissom laid down first and Sara laid down on him, resting her head on his chest. He rubbed her back as they watched the sprays of light, mostly in silence; then Grissom spoke. "Remember the first time we kissed?" She smiled, "How could I forget? I saw fireworks." He laughed at that remark.
They generated enough warmth between them to keep them comfortable enough to fall asleep there. About an hour and a half later, Grissom's watch began beeping. He stretched out, and then looked at the time. "Baby," he said, as he rubbed Sara's arm. "It's nearly midnight. A new year is coming." She stirred and opened her eyes. "What time is it?" "Its 11:55. Is there anything you'd like to do before the year is over?" She sunk back into him and snuggled against him. "No. It's been perfect already." "That's exactly how I feel," he said, and watched the time. 11:59.
He showed his watch to Sara, and she sat up on the couch, and he soon followed. He looked toward her, and wrapped his arm around her. Then, he lowered his mouth to her ear. "Ten.. nine.. eight.. seven.. six.. five.. four..three.. two..mmm." She knew what he was going to do, and she beat him to it. She shut him up with her lips, and gently pulled away. "Happy New Year," she whispered. The baby kicked, and she jumped slightly. "Hey," she paused, "You're missing someone." He stood her up, and knelt down to her belly, took it in his hands and kissed it. "Happy New Year Baby."
