….
Tadashi had to give Mr. Peabody credit; the guy got down to business.
No sooner had he met with the man, the court date was already set within the next week. Tadashi hated that he hadn't been able to see Hiro at all and hoped he was alright. When he wasn't helping with the case, he was pacing his home anxiously.
Mr. Peabody came almost every day, sometimes twice in one day to keep him informed, something Tadashi really appreciated. He even updated Tadashi on Hiro's appearance at one point, letting him know that his boy was safe but obviously shaken and upset, looking for his father.
Tadashi found as the court date was approaching he grew more and more sick to his stomach. He couldn't bear the thought of them taking Hiro away for good. A part of him, however, kept telling him to trust Mr. Peabody and think positively. He was trying, he was not giving up on Hiro and they had to recognize that.
The day before the trial, Mr. Peabody came one last time, smiling as usual and carrying a bottle of wine.
"What's that for?" Tadashi asked curiously.
Mr. Peabody chuckled, "Tomorrow." He did not go on, but put the bottle on the counter, "I want you to stay positive, Mr. Hamada, by this time tomorrow I will make certain that I give you and that boy a real fighting chance."
Tadashi sat down, biting his nails, something he never did until recently.
"Nervous?" Mr. Peabody asked, sitting down.
"Why shouldn't I be?" Tadashi almost laughed.
To his surprise, Mr. Peabody said nothing and looked away sadly, "I was too."
Tadashi didn't need to ask what he was talking about, he knew this case certainly brought up painful memories of his own trial and nearly losing his adopted son. Tadashi hoped his outcome was the same as Mr. Peabody's.
"Can I ask about…about Hiro's parent's killers? The man who…who shot Hiro…" Tadashi swallowed, bile rising in his throat just thinking about it.
"They will be facing justice once this case is over, I am certain that all of them will be in jail in no time."
"Good." Tadashi nodded.
"Hiro did identify them, through pictures." Mr. Peabody confirmed, "Poor boy was…very scared, but he did it. They have been filming his testimony so he will not need to go to court for that. Once we win your case, you and your boy are free to live your lives happily." He smiled.
"I hope so…" Tadashi nearly whimpered, he sounded so weak and terrified and it bothered him. He needed to be brave, for Hiro.
"Who were they?" He asked aloud, not meaning to.
"Obviously you know about Hans, the man who watched Hiro and in the end betrayed his parents. The other two, Dagur Berserker and Drago Bloodfist have also been identified, both are wanted criminals for various crimes; assault, burglary, animal cruelty, you name it, they've done it. Bloodfist was the one who came in and shot Hiro."
"Why did they do it? Hiro was just a baby and his parents trusted this Hans guy." Tadashi nearly cried, "It's so unfair."
Mr. Peabody nodded, "He won't say for sure but my guess is that the young man hooked up with the wrong crowd. Either way, all of them are going to face justice for their crimes."
"Good riddance." Tadashi snorted, "It's their fault Hiro's so afraid, if it were up to me, they'd be dead by now."
Mr. Peabody smiled sadly, "I can understand why you feel that way."
Tadashi looked away, "I just want my boy back…what if-"
"Tadashi," Mr. Peabody said firmly, "I expect that tomorrow you will hold your head high and show them that you deserve that boy, understood? I didn't take your case just to lose it, now did I?"
Tadashi found himself smiling, realizing that he was being negative and that he had to be strong, "I will." He nodded.
"Good, now, get some rest, we have a case to win." Mr. Peabody said triumphantly as he got up.
Tadashi closed his eyes and imagined how happy he would be to see Hiro and to bring him home; home forever, just like he promised. He was going to keep that promise.
….
"Hiro, try to eat something." Mr. Jack said softly.
Hiro looked away and out the window, his tummy rumbled; he had hardly eaten in days and all he wanted to do was sleep or hide. Currently he was sitting with Jack in a small room with couches and chairs and old-looking toys. He hardly looked at the toys or Jack and merely sat on the couch, looking sullen and weak.
Jack put the sandwich back in the lunchbox Hiro's temporary respite parents had made for him. Jack sighed and looked out the same window. Hiro hated the view; just another brick building next door.
"Will I see my daddy?" Hiro mumbled sadly, knowing already the answer was no. It had been 'no' a lot recently. He didn't understand why no one would let him see his daddy. A part of him wondered if his daddy had given him up but Hiro kept dreaming constantly of his daddy sitting above him in the ambulance, the last time he'd seen him, smiling at him, calling him his son. Hiro knew then that either something was wrong with his daddy or everyone was keeping him from his daddy. Either way, Hiro didn't like it one bit.
"Maybe." Jack said, sounding somewhat hopeful.
That gave Hiro pause, "I will?"
Jack gave him a quick look and smiled, "I'm really not supposed to tell you this but…your daddy is…well, he's fighting real hard right now to keep you. He's actually talking to a judge as we speak. I…we are hoping he wins."
"If he wins does he get to keep me?" Hiro asked.
Jack nodded.
Hiro smiled for the first time in days, his eyes lighting up. His daddy wanted him, his daddy was fighting for him. He knew it, he knew Dashi loved him. He reached into the lunchbox and pulled out the carrots and began munching on them, obviously more hopeful and ready to eat. Besides, his daddy would want him to eat all his vegetables and be happy.
…..
Tadashi was exhausted and it had only been three hours into the trial. He'd already spoken, Elsa, Merida, Jack, Aster and even Dr. North had all testified, whether it was through a letter or in person. All of his friends and his aunt Cass were there as well. Hiccup even showed up with Astrid, giving him a thumbs up from the back.
The only person who didn't seem to agree that he should keep Hiro was the director of children services, Ms. Grunion.
But as Mr. Peabody grilled her, Tadashi could tell that both of them seemed…frosty towards one another, as if they'd crossed paths and not in a good way.
Tadashi could barely listen as he seethed inside listening to how the women called Tadashi an ill fit parent, allowing Hiro to be injured twice and then shot. His heart soared however as Mr. Peabody counteracted all her arguments with evidence from Dr. North and Aster about each situation.
When she stepped down, Tadashi could tell he'd ruffled her feathers but she was obviously not changing her stance much.
"Next?" The judge ordered, sounding bored at this point.
"I call to the stand…Baymax." Mr. Peabody said, much to everyone's surprise.
"What?!" The defense lawyer defending the children services decision gasped.
"He was present the night of the shooting." Mr. Peabody explained, "And he recorded everything that occurred."
Tadashi stared in awe as Mr. Peabody pulled out Baymax's charging station and quickly said 'ow'. He sat bolt upright in shock as his robot walked awkwardly towards the stand. It was almost comical to see the robot struggle to get to the stand. But all Tadashi could think was that he couldn't do this. He couldn't relive that horrible night, and yet…he had to see.
"Baymax?" Mr. Peabody asked him.
"Yes Mr. Peabody." Baymax said kindly.
"Your owner is Tadashi Hamada correct?"
"Yes, that is correct."
Tadashi could barely hear as Mr. Peabody asked about details of that night. Apparently Baymax had saved all the memory from that event.
"Would you please show us the video of when the perpetrator said 'ow'?" Mr. Peabody asked.
"Certainly."
Tadashi watched as Mr. Peabody pressed a button so the video on Baymax's chest could be projected onto a big screen for everyone to watch.
It was in night vision but Baymax had recorded the man walking down the hall and stopping in front of Hiro, who looked terrified.
Tadashi nearly cried seeing the look of fear on Hiro's face. He then watched, seeing in detail for the first time the moment that he had come out, registered what had happened and then pushed Hiro out of the way, only in vain it seemed.
No one said a word as they watched Tadashi struggle to take down the man and then do everything in his power to save Hiro's life.
The video ended after the police arrived.
The room was still silent but Mr. Peabody continued, "Baymax...did Mr. Hamada successfully keep Hiro alive until paramedics came?"
"Yes, he acted immediately and protectively." Baymax said, "He kept Hiro warm, stayed the bleeding, and utilized my services as a healthcare companion. Had he not done what I had instructed, Hiro would have not survived."
"Thank you Baymax, I…I mean we are satisfied with our care." Mr. Peabody smiled.
Baymax went back to his charging station and Tadashi could hardly see through the tears in his eyes. Mr. Peabody and Baymax both confirmed to him what he should have known all along; he was more than fit to be Hiro's father.
"Your honor, I will be frank." Mr. Peabody sighed, taking off his glasses and cleaning them, "We have had several witnesses, professionals I might add, who can attest to this man's character. In my opinion, Tadashi Hamada has more than earned the right to adopt a son, but not just any son; Hiro."
The judge seemed to ponder this and looked towards the table with the children services director who was practically fuming but who was obviously not going to win her case.
"I agree." The judge finally said, "There was more than enough sufficient evidence and testimony to give this man credit of his parenting abilities. He even pushed the child out of the way when the gun went off, showing clear parenting instincts. With each situation, he had done everything correctly. Every parent makes mistakes, but this man knew how to learn from and correct his mistakes to keep his son alive. Mr. Hamada, I am giving you full and permanent custody of Hiro, starting today."
With the bang of the gavel, everyone cheered and Tadashi stared in awe at the judge, tears falling down his face, his breathing short from the sheer miracle of winning.
He could hear voices behind him congratulating him but his eyes were on the door where Jack entered, holding Hiro's hand.
Hiro smiled when he saw Tadashi and ran right to him.
Tadashi came around the table to pick him up and hold him. He never thought he'd get to experience this ever again and here he was, wondering if he was dreaming.
But Hiro's firm grip around his neck was proof that he was awake and that his boy was in his arms where he belonged.
"Daddy, I missed you." Hiro said into his neck.
"I missed you too." Tadashi managed to choke out. He kissed Hiro's forehead and smiled at him, looking into his eyes, "Hiro, I'm so sorry."
"Why?" Hiro asked.
"I let them take you from me…but…I'm never gonna let anyone ever take you from me again, I promise."
"I know." Hiro nodded, "Jack told me you fought really hard to keep me."
"I did…but…I had help." Tadashi told him and then pointed, "You see that man right there? That's Mr. Peabody, and without his help, I don't know if I would have ever seen you again." He admitted.
"He's a good man." Hiro nodded, "But you're better."
Such a high compliment in Tadashi's eyes. He smiled and savored holding Hiro again.
