Please enjoy.
Chapter 20: A Year Has Passed
The phone rang in kitchen as Mrs. Higurashi prepared the dinner she would so graciously serve to family in a few hours. She hadn't been expecting any calls that day for it was easter weekend and she told all of her friends she would be busy. But none the less she dropped the carrots she was cutting and ran to the reciever, ignoring the caller I.D.
"Hello, who is this?" She asked in an optimistic tone, hoping for one of her childrens voices to echoe through it.
"Hello Mrs. Higurashi, it's Nijo from the supermarket on the corner of Hempstead and Merrits." The man replied.
"Oh hello, I wasn't expecting any calls today, what is this about?"
"Well I was wondering if...maybe you would be..interested in going..on a date sometime with me?"
"W..what?" She asked, taken back by this request.
"I know..it sounds silly but-"
"No it doesn't!" She yelled. "I mean...it has been quite a long time..."
"And we hardly know each other..."
"But that's what dates are for.." She said.
"Y-yes...they are for that. I was...I mean I know We've only talked for a couple of minutes at a time when I make a delivery or help you in the store, but I really think you are a nice and beautiful lady."
"That's so sweet of you Nijo..I would love to, but I hardly know anything about you.."
"Ask me any question you'd like."
Mrs. Higurashi paused for a moment and smiled "How many kids do you have?"
"Four, and you?"
"Two. But four that is a lot."
"Well isn't your oldest married? I may only have four children but I bet you have some grand children Grandma."
Mrs. Higurashi chuckled at the thought. "I don't yet but I have two on the way, twins."
"That sounds exciting, when are they due?" He asked.
"Oh I have no idea. Kagome said around late may but she looks like she's ready to have them now. She's so eager to meet them."
"I was very eager to meet mine when my wi-...ex-wife was pregnant."
"Nijo?"
"I'm sorry...I shouldn't have said that."
"It's fine Nijo, I don't mind really."
"I just don't want you to think I'm still hooked on her." He mumbled.
She swallowed a bit "how long has it been..?"
"Almost 5 years. I don't love her anymore like I use to Mrs. Higur-"
"Please...call me Asako..." She whispered.
"Asako...what a beautiful name..."
"Thank you.." She said with a smile.
"Look Mrs-...Asako...I would like to take you to dinner..some place small and courteous. You don't have to come out a second time but at least give me a shot?"
She gave a small laugh and nodded "Yes I will go out with you."
"Really?" She could hear the excitement in his voice.
"Yes really, how about you come by here around 6:30 this saturday?"
"Sounds perfect to me." He said.
"Then I will see you then Nijo." She said.
"Until then Beautiful." He replied before she hung up the phone. A small smile danced on the edges of her lips as she swooned back over to the cutting board, humming to herself. Her eyes wondered over the oven clock which read 4:05 PM, only 55 minutes until everyone would arrive. She closed her eyes and hummed louder as she reminisced over the memories she had gained this year. Kagome and Inuyasha's marriage, which must have been fruitful since they were already preparing for their family almost a year later. Oh how she remembers the look on Kagome's face when she told her they were expecting! She was scared to death! HA!
And Inuyasha what a dog he was boasting about how he "got her on the first try". What a man he is!
She giggled to herself "Oh yes I am blessed". She grabbed the carrots and tossed them in a tray that housed a huge leg of lamb, with potatoes scattered around it. She opened the oven and tossed it in, wondering what else she could do until they arrived.
"I already packed everyone's easter baskets, I hope Sango and Miroku's children like their gifts. Sota's basket is all done, and I already have a basket put together for the twins. I hope Inuyasha isn't too upset that I didn't get him anything, lord knows that man is full of-"
"Mama.." Sota asked from the hallway door. "Are you talking to yourself again?"
"Your mother has a lot to do, talking to herself is perfectly normal at this point." Grandpa Higurashi chimed in from the living couch.
"Grandpa shouldn't you be checking up on the garden!" Mrs' Higurashi called.
"The garden is dead why check up on it?" He replied.
"If you had it wouldn't be dead." She yelled.
"True, when is everyone coming again?" He asked.
"5, and Mama has a date." Sota said.
"That's old news." Grandpa Higurashi said.
"Okay you too, out. I can't get what needs to be done with you guys in here." Mrs. Higurashi said as she pushed Sota out of the room.
"Oh but Mama I wan't to see what you got me for Easter." He whined.
"I didn't get you anything the easter bunny did." She said.
"But you're the easter bunny!" He said with a laugh.
"Shh! And don't say that to any of Aunt Sango's children." She said.
"Mama Kamo is only a year old and Nina is barely 4 weeks old, I don't think they'd understand what I'm talking about if I did." He sighed.
"Children hold onto everything you say dear, you'll learn that when you have kids one day."
"Yeah Yeah I know. I'm going to go make sure Grandpa isn't dead."
"Isn't he in the livingroom?"
"Yeah but his eyes are closed, I'm going to go poke him a bit."
"Don't irritate him too much. It's easter after all."
But before she could finish Sota was already out of the room, Mrs. Higurashi rolled her eyes and turned back to the oven. She lit up two of the two tops and place pots of water over the heating flame. Only a few minutes of peace passed before-
"Oof! Get off of me boy!"
"Grandpa you're a live!"
"Of course I'm alive! What the hell did you think I was?!"
Mrs. Higurashi laughed as she heard their bickering continue all the way out the doors of the house, giving her the peace and freedom she needed to finish cooking.
Sometime later...
"Mama! Where here!" Kagome's voice rang out through the house.
"I'm in the kitchen!" Mrs. Higurashi responded, putting the finishing touches on the lamb.
"It smells great in here!" Kagome called as she came into the kitchen.
"And it tastes just as good." Mrs. Higurashi said turning around to face her daugther. She gasped and reached out to touch Kagome. "Oh you look beautiful." She said with a soft a hug.
"Thank you Mama but I feel like a whale! God this next month better finish like that" she said with a snap of her fingers.
"Oh hunny it will be the longest month of your life but you will love it, trust me." Mrs. Higurashi smiled.
"How can I love it? It's a month that keeps me from meeting from my children!" She cried.
"Speaking of children where is Inuyasha?" Mrs. Higurashi asked.
"Oh he's outside trying to get Sota off of his back. Of course he had to yank one of Inuyasha's ears as soon as we arrived." She said.
"Well I must say it was news to me when he pulled off his hat and showed them to us. But deep down I always knew." Mrs. Higurashi said.
"Oh Mama how could you possibly have known?" Kagome asked.
"Because Kagome, you never went for the human type. You chased after every band that had some other wordly man in it, and you always dreamed about having powers that you never could possess. Naturally the crazy girl would find someone who is just as crazy to be." Mrs. Higurashi giggled.
"Well I had to get it from somewhere. Speaking of finding someone, Sota said you have a date."
"I do."
"With who?"
"Nijo, the man from the supermarket."
"Oh really now? Isn't he two years younger than you?"
"He is."
"Oh mother now look whose the dog." Kagome said with a wink.
"Yes well I certainly will be a grandma soon, so I guess that does make me oh what do you kids call it these days, a couger?" Mrs. Higurashi asked.
"Oh god mother!" Kagome cried. "Please refrain from ever referring to yourself as that!"
"Well you started it when you teased me about my age." She replied.
"Well I appoligize!" Kagome said trying to wipe the image of her mother as a couger out of her mind.
"Well hello everybody!" A man called from the front door.
"Miroku is that you? Where is Inuyasha?" Mrs. Higurashi yelled.
"Oh he is still trying to get rid of Sota, probably trying to drown him in the family well." Miroku said as he walked into the kitchen.
"Well where is Sango?" Kagome asked.
"She's getting the children."
"All by herself?" Mrs. Higurashi asked.
"Hey I drove here, that's exhausting."
"Ugh, you and Inuyasha are too alike." Kagome groaned.
"I don't know how you could say that I am nothing like him." Miroku denounced.
"Kagome! Kagome get Sota off of me! I'm too exhausted from driving to do it myself." Inuyasha yelled as he barged into the kitchen.
Kagome rolled her eyes and looked at Miroku, who shrugged. "I still say we are nothing alike." He said.
"Hello!" Sango called as she walked into the slightly crowded kitchen, Nina sleeping quietly in her arms. "My god why is everyone in the smallest room of the house?"
"Oh Sango!" Mrs. Higurashi squeeled "She's precious!"
"She is, and not as loud as Kami was when she was young." Miroku said as he reached down to grab the little one tugging at his legs. "Nina is like a rock, doesn't make a sound but is quite heavy."
"Oh Miroku stop comparing out daughter to non-living objects!" Sango said as she took a seat at the small table.
"Now don't get comfy dinner is almost ready!" Mrs. Higurashi said as she ran over to the oven.
"Kagome god your feet are so swollen!" Sango said.
"Oh god I know.."
"Are you excited for the baby.."
"Oh as ever.."
As the two girls went on to talk about babies, housing, and their husbands the two starving men went into the living room to talk themselves.
"So you're going to be a dad soon." Miroku said.
"Oh yeah." Inuyasha sighed.
"You haven't told us the sex yet of them."
"Well Kagome wants it to be a surprise, so I don't know yet either."
"What? You mean neither of you know?"
"Yeah so? Isn't that how you and Sango did it?"
"Hell no I looked, she just didn't know it. I swear Inuyasha the next better be a boy I can't take it. And when their older I'm going to need a son to help me with them."
"I was afraid of you reproducing, but I'm terrified of you raising a son."
"Hey I am not that bad."
"You could have fooled me."
"Haha well..have you picked out names yet?"
"Nope, but Kagome sure as hell tried. She has so many baby name books we could sell them and make a fortune."
"I don't think that's how that works Inuyasha."
"I wish it was how it worked."
"You and me both, I still have my old baby books. But they work, because then you know how to handle the little ones. Sometimes they have tips for when their older too."
"Well that's good, I don't know how to parent. At all."
"You'll be fine, when you meet them it will be scary but eventually you'll get the hang of it. The first one is always the hardest."
"Yeah well, I'm having my first and second...but I'm kind of excited to meet them...I just hope I can be the father they need."
"Well you've come a long way from being a drunk at a wedding, I think they'll love you."
"They better love me! I'm their daddy! They have to-"
"Inuyasha relax." Miroku said grasping his shoulder. "It's alright, everything will be okay because they WILL love you."
"Yeah...you're right."
"Boys come and eat!" Mrs. Higurashi called from the dining room.
"Well that's our cue." Miroku said with a nod as he walked passed Inuyasha. Inuyasha stood for a moment, looking around the room at the photos on the wall of Kagome and Sota. He smiled at the backgrounds which had Mrs. Higurashi chasing after them as they would run away laughing, it was remarkable how in almost every picture she was chastising them but yet today she still loves them. And they love her. He had been watching these photos in such deep thought he hadn't even heard Kagome enter the room.
"Inuyasha." Kagome spoke with her soft optimist voice from behind him. "Are you okay?"
"Y-yes...sorry." He said as he turned to face her, a wide smile stretched across his face. He come over to her, grasping her in his arms. "I love you Kagome."
Her gaze moved up to his as her head laid in the crevice of his neck "I love you too Inuyasha."
He smiled and bent down to draw her lips to his, his hand running over her stomach with anticipation. They stood their for a few moments staring at each other, the movement surrounding them coming to almost a complete stop. They seemed to be in a trance, a moment of sweet passion. It had always been there ever since the first day they met when Kagome came into the real estate office almost two years ago.
It was there when he proposed to her about a year ago, and when they first found out they were going to be parents.
This passion, this love that has bound them together ever since they shared their first car ride together has always been a part of them that they've worked so hard to preserve. Through every fight, struggle, and mishap they have relented and come together to stay strong and in love.
It's only been two years, but for Kagome that meant a lot. For after two years her first marriage fell apart, but even before that she had lost the man she thought she loved on her 10th day as a married couple. But Inuyasha has proven faithful and has healed the parts of her she thought would always be shattered.
He has made her whole, and once a place that Inuyasha thought he could never be made whole was now proven to be for ever filled. Together they have fit themselves like puzzle pieces, and now it was time to open their lives to new pieces.
To start a new chapter, as they Whisk themselves away into a new beginning.
