"We were going to do a big announcement for everyone but then I decided that I really wanted my brother to be the first one to know." Bella explained
Embry stared at her as tears gathered in his eyes and after a few minutes he grabbed her and pulled her into a hug.
The next morning Embry woke up feeling nervous about the day that lay ahead of him. Confronting Billy had been a hurricane of its own, but he knew that telling Jacob would unleash a storm of epic proportions.
Embry wasn't worried that his friendship with Jacob would change, if anything he knew it would get stronger but he knew the same could not be said for things between Jacob and Billy.
They had been at odds with each other for so long now that a slight gust of wind could demolish their bond, but this information was no slight gust; no, this was more like a tornado coming to destroy everything in its path. So with dread in every fiber of his being, he forced himself out of bed and made his way downstairs to tell Sam and Bella he was headed out.
Bella and Sam were curled up on the couch when he came downstairs and their heads immediately turned in his direction.
"Hey, how you feeling?" Bella asked
"Nervous." He sighed as he sat in the chair across from them
"You know he's not going to be upset with you right?" Bella asked him
"Yea, I just feel bad about what could happen." Embry explained
"I don't have to know who you're talking about to know that nothing that happens is on you." Sam told him
"Sam is right. And no matter what happens you know we're here for you and the rest of the pack will be too." Bella told him
Embry nodded and with a deep sigh he stood up, "I'm going to go get this over with."
"Do you want me to go with you?" Sam asked
"No, it's better if it's just the two of us." Embry told him
"Alright, good luck man and call me if you need me." Sam told him
With a final nod and a hug from Bella, Embry left their house and set out towards the house he shared with Jacob and Quil.
Once he got about halfway there he realized he should probably check to make sure Jake was home and not busy with anything.
"Hello?"
"Hey Jake, its Embry."
"Dude I know that; what's up?"
"Are you home?"
"Yea, I don't have to patrol today so I was just going to hang out around here. You coming home anytime soon?"
"Actually I'm already on my way."
"Cool. I was about to eat, you hungry?"
"I'm good, thanks though. Listen there's something I need to talk to you about when I get there."
"Is everything ok? Is this about your Mom or something?"
"I'll explain when I get there."
"Dude you got me kind of nervous now but alright, see you."
Once they hung up, Embry stashed his phone back in his pocket and picked up his pace. He wasn't sure how he was going to start this conversation but he was ready to get it over with; strangely enough he felt more nervous now than when he'd gone to talk to Billy.
Jacob was already outside waiting on him when he got there and he tried to keep his eyes diverted from the scrutinizing stare he was getting.
"Why do I get the feeling I'm not going to like whatever this is?" Jake asked him once he stepped onto the porch
"Uh, you probably won't; but do you think we could go out back where there's more room?" Embry asked
"Ok, now I'm really worried. Just spit it out already." Jake told him
"Let's just go around back first ok." Embry insisted
Jake just stared at him for a few minutes before he nodded his head and led the way through the house and out the back door.
"Alright, we're back here now what's going on?" Jacob asked as he turned to once again stare at Embry
"Ok, so you remember how you guys came up with that whole DNA test thing?" Embry asked, rubbing the back of his neck nervously
"Yea, do you need to get a sample or something? You do know we could've done that inside right? " Jacob asked
"No. I um… my mom finally gave up a name." Embry told him
"Really? What made her change her mind?" Jacob asked surprised
"Less of a what, more of a who; Bella went over to talk to her and got her to give up the name." Embry said
"Ok, well don't keep me in suspense man, who is it?" Jacob asked
"There's no easy way to say this, but Billy is my father." Embry told him and then stepped back to wait for the reaction
"Billy? As in Billy, my dad?" Jacob asked
Embry just nodded.
Jacob opened and closed his mouth several times before going completely silent.
"Uh, Jake?" Embry asked as he looked for any sign of anger from his best friend
"You're not playing some sick joke are you?" Jake asked him
"What? No man I wouldn't do that." Embry responded, shocked that Jacob was asking such a thing
"I mean we knew it was a possibility right?" Jake said
"Yea we did. But I don't think either one of us ever seriously thought it would be him."
"Have you told him?" Jake asked
"I confronted him yea." Embry nodded
Jacob titled his head at that, "Confronted him? You say that like he already knew or something."
"That's because he did. He's always known Jake." Embry sighed
"What? What do you mean he's always known?" Jake asked
"Him and my mom had a thing for a while. It wasn't just some one time fling and then poof here comes baby Embry." He explained
Jacob began to pace and his hands kept alternating between his pulling on his hair and just kind of flopping down to his sides.
"So not only did he cheat on my mom but he was doing it for a while? Start at the beginning, I need to know everything." Jake told him
"Are you sure?" Embry asked
"I need to make sure I have the whole story before I make any decisions."
Embry was a bit surprised at the level headed thinking Jacob was showing, but then again this wasn't a newly phased Jake.
"The short version is that Billy and my Mom met on one of his trips up to the Makah Rez; he never told her that he was married or that he already had two kids. Their relationship went on for a while and then he found out that Sarah was pregnant with you and he decided to break things off with my mom."
"Oh how nice of him." Jacob scoffed
"Obviously he didn't really do what he was supposed to and my Mom ended up pregnant with me. And it wasn't until after she'd gotten pregnant and come here looking to start a life with him that Billy informed her he was married and already had two kids with another on the way." Embry continued
"How has he managed to keep your mom silent all these years?" Jacob asked him
"Basically he threatened her and then once you and I became friends my Mom decided that our relationship was more important than breaking her silence about Billy." Embry explained
"I just don't get it. How could he welcome you into our home all these years; look you in the face and never say 'hey I'm your dad'?" Jake asked
"I asked the same question, and he didn't really have an answer for me." Embry said
Jacob went silent again and continued to pace while Embry watched on wondering what his best friend, now brother, was thinking.
It was at least another 10 minutes before Jake stopped pacing and turned to look at Embry. And as he stood there staring at Embry, something occurred to him.
"You know this changes nothing between us right? You've always been my brother and I don't need blood to tell me that."
Embry tried to hide the tears that flooded his eyes at that statement but then Jacob pulled him into a hug and the next thing he knew he was holding on to him for dear life and sobbing.
"I know this has turned your whole world upside down but I'm still here ok."
A/N: Don't let this chapter fool you, the showdown between Billy and Jacob is coming but Embry needed to have this moment first.
