A Night In Teslin - Part 3

Christine

Everyone has finished eating and we are all now just sitting around and relaxing. Rob and Nathan are watching TV. Rob was petting Dana and Cassandra while his gaze was fixed on the TV. I was laying by the pillows, I couldn't see the TV from where I was laying but I could hear the news they were watching. None of it was too important.

"Alright everyone, time for bed." Nathan said as he shut off the TV and stood up.

"Hey man, thanks for dinner. I'll see you in the morning. We'll all check out and get back on the road." Rob stood up and went to get his coat.

"See ya later Christine." Jenny said as I stood up as well.

"Hey!" Cassandra spoke up "Gimmie paw." She held out her paw. I bumped my paw against hers, like a bro fist. "Now don't let that human of yours cause any trouble." She said jokingly.

"I'll keep my eye on him."

"See ya bright and early." Heather said.

"Yah, make sure you get a good sleep." Lily finished

"So sleep, much rest, go have." Dana put the words in my head.

"Christine, stay cool." Dentyne was the last one to speak.

"Alright, good night." I was on my way out the door as I said that.

You could almost smell the exhaust fumes in the air from all the idling campers. Blah, I want to go back inside or something.

"Whoa, shit!" I looked over and saw Rob hanging on to the vans mirror "Ice is going to be the death of me one day." I walked over to where he was and he regained his balance and opened up the driver door. I jumped in to the van and then Rob followed.

All the heat from before was gone and we were once again in a cold metal box, but I don't mind at all. I could hear

Rob fumbled around with his keys, using this time I jumped up on the passenger seat and sat down. "Freakin darkness…" He whispered and then found the key he was after. There was a click and then he started the van up. After a few seconds he grabbed a handle that was sticking out from behind the steering wheel and pulled it down a bit, the van felt like it kicked backwards.

It didn't take him long to get out of the parking spot. I looked around and then I realized how empty it felt in here. Without my friends this place is just one big empty space. It made me feel sad.

I decided to stay silent as Rob drove around the building to our room. I felt the van skid to a halt in one of the parking spaces and Rob shut it off. I looked at him as he got out of his seat and went to the back "I have a medical kit in one of these boxes…" He moved some bags of food to the floor and opened the cardboard box up and started to dig through it. "It's not in here… Just some old clothes..."

"Rob, I have a question…"

"What is it Christine?" He closed the box and moved to one of the ones next to the bed.

"How much pain are you in?"

"Not much…" He moved to the next box.

"I want to know the truth…"

He stopped digging around in the box and looked at me. "My arms feel like they are on fire, I have been doing a good job at ignoring it but I may have an infection." He resumed his search. "They say that it is better to have something and not need it then to need it and not have it… Now, where the hell is it?

This side of the building was quiet and peaceful. Unlike the other side where people were always driving around and making noise, the only sound here is Rob moving stuff around. Then he pulled out a big white box. "I found it!"

"Where did you get something like that?" I was a bit stunned at the size of this box. You just don't see them sold in stores or anything.

"Funny you should ask…. This one time my friend was in the hospital, for whatever surgery. I can't remember. Like spleen or kidney, something… I was informed that I looked like one of the doctors. One day, I got cleaned up, combed my hair, shaved. Made myself look real professional like, the collared shirt and tie, the works. I went to see my friend for a bit, managed to get one of those white coats. You see where this is going? I'm a doctor now. "

"So, you robbed a hospital?"

"I slipped this bad boy out the window… Best umm…" He looked at the box "$800? I never spent"

"And you didn't get caught?"

"Ehh… I had to give a patient an impromptu prostate exam… But I don't want to talk about that…"

"I don't want to know about that." I decided that was a bit disgusting.

"Let's go." Rob held the medical kit in his left hand and opened one of the side doors with his right hand. I jumped down from the seat and went out before him.

"How's the ice?" He asked still standing in the door way.

"Not too bad."

"Ok, good." Rob took a cautious step on to the pavement before he left the van. after finding out that it was safe he got out and shut the door. I made it to the room door first.

"Let me get the key…" He dug around in his coat pocket and pulled out a card. Rob slid the card in to the door handle and there was a green light and he opened the door.

I entered the room, it was nice and warm, dark but warm. Until Rob turned on the lamp, now there is light. Rob already shut the door and placed the medical box down on the bed. He sat down next to the box and turned on the TV

That's when I realized that I needed to go out and take care of some business. "Rob."

"Yeah Christine?"

"I need to go outside."

"Alright." He got up and opened the door.

"I'll knock when I get back."

"Ok, I need to change my bandages and look at my wounds so if I don't answer the door, that's why."

"Understood." I started walking along the sidewalk back towards the main area.
