It was a chilly day when Rebecca finally awoke, she had slept for over fifteen hours, she needed it. She let out a yawn while her left arm searched for any signs of life sleeping next to her, she groaned when she felt just the mattress, Ace was nowhere in sight and he hadn't returned home last night.
Probably sleeping off the alcohol in Irby's store room on the small mattress for occasions like this, she thought to herself, she made a soft grunt when she got up off of her stomach, she had slept in an awkward position.
Her bare feet touched the floor and she made her way to the bathroom and brushed her teeth, looking herself up and down in the small mirror, her make up was smudged, but at least the bags under her eyes had disappeared. She fixed her face and made her way downstairs to get a cigarette, the stench of old smoke took over the house making her queasy so she decided to have her puff outside.
She took a long drag and exhaled the smoke into the cold air, the smoke forming an 'O' as she practised the trick she had learnt when she had started smoking, her eyes widened when she saw Junior Merrill's pick up truck pull into the drive way, "Great." She muttered while she watched two feet emerge from the driver's side, those weren't Junior's old feet though.
"You know smoking's bad for you." Andrew Merrill walked over to her, after slamming the truck door shut.
"So is prying into other people's buisness." She retorted looking him up and down, he was in his police uniform a confident smirk on his face. "And you got no buisness being here."
"I think I do." He reached out and grabbed the cigarette she had been smoking and placed it on his lips, as soon as his hand went up to her face she had flinched. "Ah, poor baby. I've seen enough domestic violence cases in my job, to know what that flinch means."
She glared at him. "You don't know shit."
He chuckled, she shivered it was just like Ace's. "So where's my little brother? Or should I call him Ace?"
"He's not here so just leave." She spat at him, the queasiness in the pit of her stomach returning.
"Okay, little darling." He stubbed the cigarette out with his police boots, you could cut the tension with a knife. "Give him a message from me, tell him I'm looking forward to wiping the grin right off his face when we race tonight, my Cadillac is going to wipe his to the floor."
"I think it will be you that's being wiped off the ground." She smirked.
"If I was my brother, I'd kick your nice ass for that, but I'm not." He smiled and she let out a scoff. "I'll be seeing you." And she watched him walk back to Junior Merrill's pick up truck and then drive off. So many questions ran through her mind that she wanted answered.
A cold chill went down her back and she threw up all over the front porch, something didn't feel right.
It wasn't until Rebecca had reached Durham with Cassie and Tess, till she had seen Ace, he was standing with his buddies in conversation, she stormed up to him.
"Where you been all day?" She asked, her eyebrows raised and her arms crossed.
"Aren't you going to say Hello?" He grinned as he pulled her into him and gave her a kiss, the group of guys he was with whistled, she pushed him back and they all 'meowed', he chuckled as he watched her face go red with rage.
"I been worried sick." She told him, putting a curl from her hair behind her ears.
"I'm pretty sure I'm a grown man who can look after himself, darling." He smirked as he watched his buddies leave them to it.
"Urgh you sound just like him." She shuddered.
"Who?"
"If you had returned home last night, you would have come face to face with Mr. Policeman this morning." She told him and the smirk dissolved from his face, he grabbed her arm.
"Did he touch you?" She was taken aback by the sensitivity in his voice, she hadn't heard that voice in a long time, she shook her head in response. "Good, 'cause I'd kill him."
"Sure you would." She muttered more to herself then to him. "So is the race off?"
"What do you mean?" He looked at her, while he puffed a cigarette. "Course not, I'm looking forward to it." He grinned.
"I don't think you should race, Ace!"
"Well I'm doing it if you like it or not." His voice was back to being cold and demanding. "So sit down and watch." He pushed her onto the bench that was next to them.
"No." She got up and shoved him out of the way, he rolled his eyes as he watched her storm off.
"I'll show him." She spat to herself as she stormed up to Vince Desjardins.
Jack Mudgett walked over to Ace and quietly and quickly placed Ace's switch-blade back into it's owners hands, making sure no one was around to see it.
"Is it done?" Ace questioned as he wiped the blade with the cloth he had been shining his car with.
"Done and dusted, man." Jack smirked proudly. "C'mon let's get a beer." He suggested, pulling Ace away from his car and going over to everyone else.
"What are you doin' Rebecca?" Vince asked as he watched her sneak over to the car.
"Shh c'mon, crouch down before anyone sees ya." She whispered as she pulled him down and her head poked out from underneath a Buick and she watched Ace and The Cobras stand around drinking beer. "Teaching Ace a lesson."
"If Ace find's out, I helped ya, I'm a goner." Vince panicked.
"Shut it," Rebecca threatened while she hopped into the driver's seat. "Now show me how to hot wire this hunk of junk."
"That's not a hunk of junk." Vince retorted and she gave him a look. "Alright, alright, but you didn't hear this from me, you dig?"
"I dig so much that I'm ten feet under ground." She smirked and he shook his head at her attempt of a joke and he started the engine for her.
The radio turned on and the fitting song Wild One by Jerry Lee Lewis played and Vince watched her speed off. He made his way back over to his friends.
"Where's Rebecca?" Cassie asked as she looked around, everyone shrugged.
"Dunno." Vince lied, shrugging his shoulders.
"Probably recovering from her conniption fit." Ace smirked, he was interrupted by Jack who had hit him on the right shoulder getting his attention immediately.
"The car! Rebecca's in the car." Jack was able to mutter out.
"What?" Ace asked and Jack pointed him in the direction of Rebecca, everyone turned round and watched.
"Holy shit! Rebecca's boosted your brother's car!" Fuzzy excitedly exclaimed as they all watched as she sped down the road in Ace's brothers blue Cadillac, all their eyes widened in response.
"Shit man, what are we gonna do?" Jack turned to Ace, Jack's face was as white as a ghost.
Ace gulped a reply. "Nothing." The day had just turned from bad to worse, as Jack paced up and down and Ace stared into the distance.
"What's the matter with you?" Billy whispered into Jack's ear.
"The breaks." He muttered and Billy looked at him not understanding. "The breaks! I cut the breaks of the car."
