Chapter 21 – Secrets and lies
Zoe and Max had been slowly seeing more and more of each other again after Max's mum being admitted to hospital. He had been so worried about helping her out, that he and Zoe had been put to the back of his mind. "So, dinner tonight?" They were stood in their usual smoking spot which nobody else knew about. Max was grinning at Zoe and she couldn't help but smile back at him. "Are you sure you're free tonight? You know I can wait if you still need to be with your mum." Max moved past Zoe "Well, at least one of us can wait then" and carried on walking towards reception. "Yes, I'm sure" he said winking back at her before disappearing inside. Zoe looked at the floor as she knew she had gone red, and then slowly walked back inside herself.
The day went by in flashes: treating patients, completing paperwork, treating more patients, listening to Connie moaning and seeing Max being his subtle self around the ED. Zoe was stood with Charlie when her phone started ringing and she recognised the number straight away, she'd never forget it. "Hello…" she walked away from the others and stood near the entrance to the hospital. "Zoe, change of plan. I'm only in Holby for the night-" "Look, I can't do this. Everything has changed; it's not just me I have to think about anymore." Zoe gazed back inside towards where Max was standing joking around with Lofty and Cal. "Zoe, you said yourself you missed me. I just want to talk, nothing more. Look I'm staying at the hotel in town, please come see me." With that she hung up and stood holding the phone to her chest for a few minutes before going back inside to finish her shift.
The rest of her shift went quickly and she walked upstairs to speak to Max but when she got to his cupboard she could hear someone speaking. "No I really think she's the one. I've never seen a girl for more than a week, but she's got something that keeps me hanging on." It was Lofty in there with him as he began speaking "Well then, tell her how you feel. If she really means that much to you." Zoe turned and walked away leaving them to talk, and thinking over the words she had just heard herself. She went back into her office until she saw Max walk past and head outside. "Zoe, there was a message left for you at reception. Not sure who it was but all they said was think about it. Guessing that means something to you." Tess told Zoe of the message and realised from her expression that something was going on. "Is everything alright? Are you and Max okay?" Tess said this quietly as she knew that nobody else knew other then Charlie and Dylan. "Yeah we're good, thank you Tess. Everything's going to be fine" she said as she turned and began walking away.
Max hadn't waited for Zoe, he had walked back to his to get changed so she drove home to wait for him to get there. Dylan was out for the night with some 'old friends' but she wasn't sure that was the truth. Then again Zoe wasn't really the one to question people about telling the truth at the moment. Just as she went into the bedroom to get something she heard someone walking up to the boat. "Hey, I'm just in my room" She just assumed it was Max but when she turned around and wandered back into the living room she didn't expect to see who she did. "Hello Zoe, interesting choice of home" Nick said stood in the door way. She froze, she didn't know what to say or do for that matter. "Nice to see you too" he laughed to himself.
"Nick, I said that I couldn't do this not now, not ever. Please just go" Zoe walked over to the sink and just stood there resting on the side. "What do you want Nick?" She turned around looking at him "I still miss you Zoe, and no matter how much you ignore it, I know you miss me too." He walked closer to her before she held up her hands "Stop. Yes I miss you Nick, but I don't love you anymore. I've changed and I definitely don't want to go back to how I was before." She moved past Nick and sat on the sofa with her legs up. "Zoe. I'm being transferred back to a local hospital around here. Not Holby so don't give me that look. I want us to try again, please." He moved closer to Zoe who had stood up looking at him. He bent down and kissed Zoe, who froze not knowing what to do. "Think about it Zoe. I'm leaving back to America for 2 weeks tomorrow, but then I'll be back. And I plan on sticking around for good, so please, please think about this." Nick turned around and left, leaving Zoe standing there not knowing what the hell to think. She adored Max but could she really forget about Nick now that he would be living in the same town as her again.
