Chapter 21 – A Gaze in the Eyes and Into a Book

It was nearly a month after Celeste's birth that Quil's twins were born. A girl and a boy. Leah was thrilled beyond thrill. She was happy that one twin was a girl, having a bit of hope that she was a shifter like her. Maybe if both her parents are shifters.

The twins were named Ravus, for the boy, and Kiuna for the girl. Kiuna looked more like Quil, a face filled with pure innocence and rounded with kindness. Ravus took after Paul. His face was boyish, but rough and handsome with dominance. Both the twins had dark curls; Kiuna's being longer, tanned skin, and warm brown eyes. The pair was sight to behold.

Joel stepped out the house, instantly the fresh scent of pine hit his nostrils and he took a deep whiff. But then something else caught his attention. It was a smell of…

He turned to see Alec stalking up to his side, a small smile on his face. "Joel.", he spoke softly. Joel stood still, wondering why Alec was here with him. "Alec?" "I'm just here to talk. I promised you that we will sort this matter between us. I don't want my future, hopefully, brother-in-law to hate for the time we live. This is a long time."

Joel could tell that Alec was saddened. Saddened that Joel didn't like him. 'But I don't hate him…', he thought with pure guilt. Exhaling, he took a few steps closer to the older. "Alec, I don't hate you. I really don't. I just… I just afraid of you." Alec's golden eyes widened. "Afraid of me? You mean you… fear me?" Joel nodded slowly. "Yes. I fear you." "Why?"

The hybrid was beginning to feel intense remorse within his chest. It pained him a little. "I… I… it's just every time I look at you, I'm reminded of my family. My dead family. And who killed them. When I see you, I'm constantly reminded of the failure I was when I couldn't protect them. I felt weak and I still do. Alec, when you were with the Volturi and demanded for Seth, I was scared. I remembered my family being taken from me and I was frighten and furious that it was going to happen again. I don't want that. Alec, you got to promise me that… you have to promise me that you won't take Seth or any of my family away. You have to."

Tears began to flow out of sun golden eyes. Alec frowned as he watched Joel break down into a bundle of agony. He dropped to his knees and sobbed harshly. "You have to. I can't be alone again! I don't want to feel pain anymore! I can't feel like a failure, a disaster, and a disappointment! I don't want to!"

Alec began to feel shameful.

How could he have done this? He broke Joel! And did he mean to? That was a hanging question.

He watched with a keen eye as Joel shook as if he was cold or sick. His sobs didn't seem they would stop. "I just… I just want…"

It trailed off there. The ex-Volturi slowly stepped to Joel's side, taking the younger into his arms. Joel didn't protest or struggle. His wolf bore the need for the nearest comfort. And Alec was there. Joel's sobs turned into harsh whimpers as the hot tears came harder. The heartbreak became a cruel visitor, an unwelcome guest, all over again.

"Joel, listen to me. I won't take Seth away or anyone else. I regret ever hurting you and Seth as I did. I was just so in love with him that I was blind to what really mattered. His and your feelings. I wish I took take it back and start over with you. I wish I could erase this pain you endure daily. I promise that I will love Seth unconditionally and treat him the way he is to be treated. I also promise to protect you and him from any danger that follows. Even if it means I must kill my sister. She doesn't see that I hold a heart for Seth like no other. And if she refuses to, I won't acknowledge her as kin to me. Instead, I do for you. You are my vampire brother that I will stand by. Even if you don't believe me now, I'll wait an eternity for you to see. And if I so betray you or Seth, end me. I don't care either way, just do it. I rather choose death than to see you unhappy like you are now."

It was silent for a moment. Only the sounds of nearby animals and the rushing of the nearby river was heard. Joel's sobs and whimpers stopped. His eyes were red and puffy of the crying he had done. He choked up a little and whispered, "I couldn't."

Alec looked down, meeting Joel's now light hazel eyes. "I couldn't do it. I couldn't kill you if I wanted to. I do see that you make my brother happy. He loves you. And if I was to kill you, Seth will die a million deaths at once. No matter how bad it is, I couldn't. I'm not strong enough for that."

"But… do you at least forgive me?"

Joel sat up and climbed off Alec's lap, wiping the tear streaks on his face. "I had long ago. I just needed time to get use to you."

Alec nodded. "Alright. So are we…?" The hybrid nodded. "Yeah. We're cool now."

The two embrace into a bond of friends, not noticing that Seth was just at the window with a grin on his face.

"Who's the pretty baby? Huh? Who's the pretty baby?"

Celeste cooed at the one above her, laughing and smiling brightly as her blond aunt played with her. Rosalie tickled her stomach while making baby sounds at the hybrid baby. "You are! You're the pretty baby!"

Leah and Alice walked into the nursery at that moment, both smirking. "So cute! Rosalie, you make a great aunt!", Leah joked. Rosalie laughed as she lifted Celeste from her crib and into her arms. "I know."

"Where's Jacob and Edward?", Alice asked. "Edward went to hunt with Carlisle and Esme, Jacob went with. I volunteered to stay with Celeste since Joel or was Seth found." Alice nodded and walked over to coo lightly at the baby girl. "Hey, Celeste. You look like just like your mother. But you have just a bit of Edward in you with your fuzzy hair."

Celeste just giggled. "Aw! Adorable! Hey, want to go see the twins! We should bring Celeste along.", Leah suggested. "She should meet some of her cousins." The vampire sisters nodded and agreed. Alice dressed the hybrid baby in comfortable and stylish clothes while Rosalie prepared her baby bag. Leah wrote a note for Jacob and Edward so they wouldn't worry. By the time they were headed out the house for Alice's car, for the safety of Celeste, Seth, Joel and Alec made their appearance. "Hey, where you going, sis?", Seth asked. Leah strapped Celeste properly in her seat and stood to answer her brother. "To the Rez. We wanted to see the newborns."

"Oh yeah. Quil just recently gave birth.", Alec pondered. Joel nodded. "Yup, my soon to be brother-in-law."

Alec smiled. It warmed him to hear in Joel's tone that the hybrid was no longer on bad terms with him. "I want to see them! I got to know my niece and nephew.", Seth cheered. "Hitching a ride or…?", Alice started. "I was going to take a quick shower.", Joel answered. "We can just meet you there."

"Cool. See you in a few."

The girls drove off, leaving the two hybrids and vampire to their own devices.

"Embry? Embry?"

Jared wandered through the Call residence, searching for his mate. He haven't seen him since his early morning patrol with Sam and Brady. It kind of pained him to leave his mate.

He ran into Tiffany in the kitchen, who told him that Embry was probably in his room sleep, but he wasn't there when Jared checked. Jared went around a corner and saw the slightly younger kneeling on the floor by an opened door. In his hands he held a book and by his side was scatters of papers from an opened small chest. Jared slowly approached him and squatted by his side. "Babe?" Embry looked up at him, almost noticeable tear streaks on his cheeks. "Jared…"

The dominant instantly found discomfort and sorrow in his mate's tone. "Embry, what's wrong?" Embry didn't answer. He dropped the book and forced his weight into Jared's arms. Jared almost lost his balance, but that didn't matter. Embry mattered. "Jared, what's wrong? Tell me." He could hear soft sobs from the submissive, breaking his heart. "Where… is my mother still here?" Jared nodded as his ran fingers through the other's soft black tresses. "Yeah. She might be still in the kitchen."

Embry sniffled before looking up at the other. "I got to speak to her." Jared nodded; he stood and took hold of Embry's smaller hand as he picked up the book from earlier. The couple made their way into the kitchen to find Tiffany there sipping on a cup of tea. A newspaper lay just in front of her.

"Mom?"

Tiffany looked up to see a saddened Embry leaning onto his beau. Immediately, she felt her mother instincts come into play. "Embry? What's wrong?", she asked as she stood from her seat. Embry held back a sniffle and revealed the book he had in his hands. Tiffany eyed it as he slowly set on the table, as if he would break it if it was glass. "What's that?" "I found it in our hall closet. I thought I should straighten it out because it looked a little pack, but… I stopped when I saw a crack in our floorboard. I became curious about it and move one board over and saw a box. I lifted it and went through it. That book was a journal… from Sam's father." Tiffany's eyes widened just as Jared's did. "Sam's father? Joshua Uley?"

Embry nodded. "Yeah. I was wondering why his things where here and I began to read through it. Mom… what really happened between you and him?"

Tiffany had to admit that the question was unexpected. She didn't think that Joshua Uley, Sam's untrustworthy father would be brought up. Especially from her own son. "Well… it was years ago. To be honest, he and I weren't close at all. But I was friends with his wife. She was my best friend. I could never break her heart because I wasn't in good terms with Joshua. It was during a bonfire. After we told stories of our legends of our ancestry and whatnot, he pulled me to the side. 'Look.', he started. 'I truly don't hate you. In fact, it's the complete opposite.' I was confused when he told this to me. He didn't hate me? 'Then what is it?', I had asked him. He took a deep breath and said, 'I imprinted on you. I love you, Tiffany.' To say I was shocked is a damn understatement. I was pissed beyond belief. Many years before he married Allison he told her that he loved her and imprinted on her. He had lied. He lied to my best friend. And they had a child on the way. I didn't speak to him after that. I couldn't even face him. I moved out of La Push a month later. And soon I found out he did to. I didn't care nor did I think I would meet him again. I was wrong. It was a late night when he showed up to my door, wanting to speak to me. I regret I ever let him. I don't know what happened after. I just remember him speaking and some blow to my head. I didn't see him when I came to. Just a letter saying, 'I will always love you.' I tore it, still feeling anger from him."

Tiffany wiped the tear that escaped from her eye as she told her story. She looked up and saw that Embry was looking at her in disbelief. Jared was rubbing his back to soothe him. He looked he wanted to speak, but he couldn't form the words. The Makah woman felt instant pain in her chest. "Embry… please… I didn't-"

"It's not you, Mom. I believe you. I do. It's just… in that book, his journal… he spilled everything. His love for you. Divorcing Allison. Not being a father to Sam. He said he did the unforgivable to you. But he doesn't regret it. Mom… he's my father."

Embry broke down. Luckily, a chair was just at his distance for him to collapse into it and cry. Jared wrapped his arms around the smaller, kissing his hair tenderly. "Embry, don't."

"How could he?! How could he do that to Allison? To Sam? To my own mother?! He left us, Jared! He left my mom to defend for herself and me! And what really adds salt to injury is that we don't know if he imprinted on my mom or not! Damn him!"

Tiffany walked around the table and took Embry's face into her hands. "Embry… Embry… Embry… listen to me. Yes, Joshua was a total prick for doing what he did, but he did leave one thing to hold onto, to treasure." Embry ceased his crying and wiped his tears. "What's that?"

"You. I don't regret having you at all. Your my son. I pushed you out, fed you, clothed you, and taught you how to speak and everything. If I didn't want to do those things I would have gave you up a long time ago. But I didn't. You're my son. You're not Embry Uley. You're Embry Call. My Embry Call and I'm lucky to have a son like you. Hell, Jared's lucky to have imprinted on you."

Jared smiled at Tiffany. "I am. I love Embry before I had imprinted him and will always."

Embry felt better hearing truth from his mate and his mother.

"Leah!"

Leah opened her arms as Quil rushed up to her to give her a hug. "Hey, Quil. Just brought the girls with me to visit the twins and whatnot. How are you?"

"Fine. So are they. Paul was just finishing dressing them when I saw you girls pull up."

"Quil, you're still glowing!", Alice squealed, giving Quil a kiss on each of his cheeks. Quil blushed heavily. "Thank you. It happens to us submissive wolves. Where are Eddie and Jake?"

"Hunting. They're swing by later, probably. Alec, Seth and Joel are on their way to visit, too.", Rosalie answered, placing Celeste on her hip. The hybrid baby cooed a little before smiling at Quil brightly. "Qwuil! Qwuil!", she laughed, holding her hands out. Rosalie handed the baby to the sub. "Hey, Celeste. Is she supposed to be speaking right now?" "Maybe so. I'm surprised she adapts to you so quickly.", Alice wondered. "Same here!"

The others turned to see Alec, Seth, and Joel approaching from out the forest. Joel laughed as Leah eyed him. "What? I am." "I think it's because Quil's a submissive. He has a sweet scent. All submissives do.", Seth added. "I guess our scents bring comfort or something. That's why we're so intentionally targeted."

"Right. Right. Hey, come inside. Paul's probably setting the babies down in their play pens right now."

The group made their way inside Quil's home. They found that Paul and the other pack members were gathered around the twins. Sam was baby-talking to Kiuna, who was cooing softly at him. Paul was lightly bouncing Ravus on his knee. He was nibbling on his father's finger, a bit of baby drool dripping down.

"You better have clean hands, Paul.", Quil warned, setting Celeste down on her feet. She crawled quickly to Collin and held out her hands. Collin lifted her in his arms. "Hey, little cousin." Celeste gave a big smile, a twinkle in her eyes before she wrapped her arms around Collin's neck to hug him. The submissive chuckled as he felt her warmth and her affection. Brady scooted closer to his imprint and looked at the hybrid baby. She glanced his way, big caramel orbs trained on him. Brady swore he knew that Celeste knew what he was thinking. He was jealous. Jealous of how Collin, his clueless imprint and beloved, was cuddling her. He thought it was really childish of him to envy that baby, but he couldn't help it. "Aren't you just the sweetest thing?" Brady looked up to see that Joel was looking at Ravus as he gnawed on his father's finger. Paul smiled when Ravus reached for the male hybrid, giving a soft whimper. "He likes you."

Joel nodded before touching Ravus' tiny hand and kissing it lightly. "I like him, too. You're just so adorable!"

Then something pulled him in. Ravus' chocolate eyes seem to... stab right through Joel's heart. Looking into them he saw flashes of random figures and imagery. Gravity didn't seem to exist anymore. Nothing seem to. In an instant, Joel was drawn back to reality. He slowly began to realize what just took place. Collin watched in curiosity as Joel stood up and backed away from Ravus and his father as if he was suddenly scared of the infant. Joel's eyes were trained on the baby, something unreadable in his gaze. Collin saw something roam around the two. Something he saw between Paul and Quil, Jared and Embry, Jacob and Edward… what he saw was…

"An imprint…"

Seth snapped his head towards the younger once the word left his lips. "An imprint?" Joel let out a soft gasp as Collin blinked and shrugged. "I don't know. I just see a new imprint." "Who?", Paul asked. Collin glanced at Joel who was frowning. His eyes told his pleading. Collin's heart was breaking.

"I… I can't tell."

Brady noticed Collin staring at Joel, who looked every bit of scared. He knew. "Joel, tell the truth. Did you imprint?"

Everyone's eyes turned to the hybrid. Under all the gazes, he felt naked and put in the spotlight.

"I… I…"

"Joel, did you?", Seth pressed. Joel felt the control he put in the question and nodded slowly. "Yes. I imprinted." Ravus let a happy coo with his hands out to the hybrid. It made the teen pleased that his infant imprintee was acknowledging him, but…

Paul and Quil watched as Ravus began to lean forward towards him. A wide smile on his face. Joel began to look hurt, as if he was debating on whether he should lift him from his father's hands. Quil noticed as Joel was stepping back slowly. It snapped. "Joel, you imprinted on Ravus, didn't you? You imprinted on my baby?"

'Shit.'

Well, Joel has imprinted and Embry discovered Sam's his brother!

How with Sam react? What will Paul think?

Give up some suggestions of what you think!

Edward: She means to review.

Yeah, that.
