Chapter 20: Confessions
November 13, 2007
That night I had done a lot of thinking.
My birthday was in the next couple of months which meant Dean only had a few more months to live which also meant the anniversary of my death. My hand went to my scar reflexively as I got dressed for school. I contemplated not going, after Sam's phone call yesterday I'm sure everyone wanted to know about my brothers and would offer that fake sympathy crap that would no doubt drive me insane. There was also the fact that this was nearly a whole month and I was still no closer to finding the vampires nest. I frowned, maybe a day off wouldn't be so bad….
I thought about the case, maybe it was time for me to just confront Edward and deal with the consequences. I was getting nowhere with trying to sneak around and hope that I come across one. Since he was staying away from his family, maybe there was a chance that it wasn't him doing the killings and that he had left them because one of them was doing it. Or I could be wrong. My digging into their past hadn't mentioned much about them other than the fact that they didn't technically exist past last year.
Then I thought back to what Charlie had said about he and Billy having a falling out over something just after the Cullen's arrived. When I asked about it he had said that Billy thought the Cullen's were dangerous and weren't allowed to come onto the reservation. I thought back to when Mike was planning his beach trip to LaPush, that was the name of the reservation. I had thought Edwards reaction was to Mike wanting me to come but maybe it was because he knew even if Mike were to invite him, he wouldn't be permitted to cross its boarders.
I also examined the Port Angeles incident. It seemed like he knew more about me just based on our short interactions than I did about him. Especially after Meg showed up and opened her big mouth. I figured that her sole purpose in being in Port Angeles was to draw me out into the open and to torture me. But he still had no right to press me for information if he was going to clam up every time I asked him. Even though I was coming around to the fact that Edward wasn't the bad guy here, I had to know if what I thought was true. Too many people were dying in this town and I needed to know.
I would get my answer today, the easy way, or the hard way. I just had no idea how in the hell I would do it.
I paced out by Edward's car after school, waiting for him to show up. My teeth trying to rip a hole in my lip as my hands were shoved in my pocket. To anyone else it would look like I had them in there just because it was cold. I had my hand wrapped tightly around my knife.
"Bella? Is something wrong?" He came up behind me.
I jumped a little, not expecting him to be so close. "Nothing."
"You're jumpy today." He smirked a little as he put his belongings in the back seat of the Volvo.
I decided to get straight to the point. "What do you know about the reservation down by the beach?"
He leaned against the hood of his car and his eyes tightened a little. He fixed me with a confused stare. "Not much."
"You sure about that?" I crossed my arms, I had been watching him for over two months now, studying my target, I knew he was bluffing.
He could sense it to because his smile became wider and his chuckle that followed was a little forced. "What's wrong Bella?"
"I need to talk to you. Now."
"Alright…." His expression, still confused, had now turned more guarded.
"Get in the car."
He opened the door for me. I got in the car, watching him cross the front of the car and settle into the driver's side. He pulled out of the parking lot slowly.
The car was quiet, soft music was playing in the background.
"What do you want to talk about?" He asked when I didn't speak.
"Not now, when we get to my house." I stared straight ahead, avoiding his eyes that were like truth serum to me.
"That bad huh?" He asked quietly.
"Yeah…."
The rest of the drive was quiet. We had pulled into the driveway and I still made no move to get out or look at him.
He put his hand on my shoulder and turned me to face him. "Are you in some kind of trouble Bella?"
"No," I pulled out my blade. "but you are." I grabbed his arm and held my blade against his throat.
"Bella?!" It looked like he was genuinely surprised that I was capable of something like this. He squirmed, trying to weasel his way out of my hold.
"I know what you are. You killed those people… why?!" I growled at him.
"I haven't killed anyone." He stated, his eyes going cold.
"Liar! Their bodies were drained! I saw them with my own eyes!" I winced as the images passed through my head again. My words came out in a snarl.
His eyed widened in realization. "Bella, it's not what you think! Please let me explain!"
"Sure, it isn't what I think…. You're a monster, and it's my job to send you back to wherever you came from!" Good or no good, he had to die. I did what had to be done for the good of humanity. He hadn't denied being a monster, so I guess I had my answer. There was only one way to deal with a vampire.
But what I didn't expect was to hear the screeching metallic sound of my blade passing easily across his neck but seeing no visible damage. I looked up at him in shock. What in the hell was he? In my moment of stunned silence, he took his opportunity. He twisted the hand that my knife was in behind my back and pressed me into the door with his arm, forcefully but not enough to hurt me.
"You son of a bitch!" I yelled, struggling in his iron grasp.
"I'm not going to hurt you." He sighed, leaning forward to speak calmly. "Just let me explain, please. You owe me that much."
I didn't answer, glaring at him with a guarded expression.
"If you promise not to try that again I'll let you go, alright?"
I nodded and slowly he released me, moving back to sit in the driver's seat. He watched me carefully, gauging my reaction. "Yes, I'm a vampire. But I did not kill those people. I'm different from others. I survive on animal blood."
I had heard of a few covens changing their lifestyle, but I wasn't buying it from him. I already had to lie about the van incident so what else could he be hiding? "Why should I believe you?"
"Look at my eyes." he waited for me to turn to him. "If I had killed the mill worker and the runner my eyes would be blood red not yellow. It's the effects of our lifestyle."
"Your eyes have nothing to do with it…." I tried to look away, but his hand was wrapped around my chin in a flash.
"Tell me what it'll take to convince you?" He looked into my eyes pleadingly. "I don't want to be a killer…."
I bit my lip, his eyes carried so much pain and sorrow, but was it out of years of torture and hatred, or from killing innocent souls?
"So, you're threatening me…?" I reached up and took his hand away from my face and looked away from him. I couldn't stand to look at his eyes anymore.
"No…. I don't want to hurt anyone, but these killings are being done by someone of my kind. It's my responsibility to handle the situation."
"You don't think I can take them?" I challenged him.
"No, you can't!" His voice was alarmed. "They'll kill you!"
"You're not the first vampire I've met." I glared at him.
"I know." He retorted. "You have an interesting past for a '17' year old."
"Yeah… I guess. How do you know that?" I risked a glance at him to find him smirking at me.
"You're not the only one who does research." I glared at him, but he continued. "Your father ran into a friend of mine a few years ago. John Winchester? I recognized his face from your family picture. Am I correct? You're a hunter, aren't you?"
I watched as the pieces fell into place for him, I contemplated denying it. But in the end, I figured to be honest with him since I knew what he was. It was only fair. "Yeah…. I can't believe Dad let your friend go."
"Well… he escaped is more like it." He smirked at some forgotten memory.
"Now that I can believe." I smirked back. "Dad wouldn't let anything go."
"Garrett is an obnoxious ass and needs to be taken down a few pegs occasionally." He laughed back.
"Sounds like a lot of things." I frowned as I looked out the window. I had the answer I needed, but why did I feel like I was still no closer to my end goal? Edward had admitted he was a vampire, I had confirmation from two dead people that they were killed by a vampire. So why couldn't I just kill him and get it over with? A small part of me, a part that set my heart beating against my ribcage again, thought that maybe he was telling the truth.
"He means well." I turned back to see a small smile that slowly turned into a frown when he looked up at the clouds. "We try to live inconspicuously. Most of our kind are nomadic, not staying in one place for too long. My family and one other in Alaska are one of the few that actually maintain a permanent residence."
I snorted. "Well, you're not doing a great job lately." If it was his responsibility, then why weren't they caught yet? Maybe it's like he said, if they were nomads, maybe they've moved on for now and this whole thing has been a moot point.
"I can't speak for all my kind." He replied defensively. "We have a set of rules that all vampires must abide by, one of them is to leave no evidence behind. Obviously, this nomad chose to ignore those rules. My family has chosen this place to settle down in, so it's our job to protect it. So, I will find the ones responsible for this and bring them to justice."
"Good, but not without my help." I smirked as I got out of the car and stepped out into the misty rain. Maybe I was looking at this from the wrong way, maybe if I worked with him I could take down the vampires and then meet with his family to check and make sure they were following the 'rules' as he called them.
"No." He got out and was by my side in an instant, not bothering to hide anything. "It's dangerous. I won't put your life at risk."
"Be careful fangs…" I decided to play with him a bit, smirking. "someone might think you care what happens to me." I tried not to blush, maybe I was good at flirting who knows.
"I do. Believe it or not I consider you a friend Bella. Possibly even more than that." I looked into his eyes and saw honesty and compassion swirling in its depths. Even though I should have been scared, I couldn't make myself feel it. My heart started beating erratically at the thought. Of course, I would have to fall in love with something I was destined to kill.
"I do too…." I leaned in instinctively but snapped out of it shortly after. "So, is it just you? Are you the only… vampire in town?" I struggled to say the word out loud. As if speaking what he was wouldn't make it any less true.
"My family are all vampires."
"All of them? Are you all related or is it more like a coven?"
"A coven, I guess." He sighed uncomfortably. "Though Carlisle likes to call us his children and we call him our father."
"And he is a doctor?" I remembered him from my small stent in the hospital, I frowned. He nodded in response. "How does he do it? How do any of you do it?"
We went into the house and he gave me a rushed version of how his family came to be. Carlisle was the first, reborn in Great Brittan. Then Edward in Chicago when Carlisle became lonely. Then after that everyone else just fell into place. I sat quietly while he was speaking, trying to absorb the words and make sense of it all. Vegetarian covens were one thing, but vegetarians that can stand to be around people? Especially bleeding patients in an operating room? When he finally finished, I sat there, stunned into silence.
"Wow…." Was the only word I could force out.
"Yes." He smiled at my response. "We've been able to keep our secret for nearly a hundred years or more, always moving to a new town before people get suspicious."
"So now that your cover is blown will you leave?" I bit my lip nervously, I was beginning to warm up to him again, which I knew was dangerous territory considering who we both were. But right now, he was my only lead on the vampires who were killing these people and it was my responsibility to protect Forks from this coven and I would do anything I could to get some help since it looked like I would be stuck in this town permanently.
He didn't answer me at first, looking away and collecting his thoughts I guess. "I don't know. I'll have to talk to the others. There's still the matter of the other vampire killing people."
"I know. Are you sure it's even still here? If you said most of your kind are nomadic then what's to say that it hasn't already left yet?"
"They're still here. I can smell their scent across town, and its fresh."
"Do you have any promising leads?"
"Not yet."
Damn… I thought to myself. "We need to draw it out in the open… can you track it?"
"Yes."
I nodded, jumping up to head for the stairs. "We can go out tonight. You'll track him, and I'll be the bait."
"No." Before I could blink he was standing in front of the stairs, blocking my way.
I sighed and put my hands on my hips. "Why not?"
"I can't use you as bait."
"You don't have to, I'm volunteering."
"No." He glared at me, which I had to admit was a little more frightening than I thought it would be. But I steadied myself.
"Edward…. I'm going with you, that's final."
"Bella, I won't risk your safety." His tone matched mine.
"So, you'll let someone else get killed? No, I have to do this. I'm not that delicate you know. I've killed vampires before, what makes this one so special?" Although I didn't know if this vampire would be what I am used to, or if they would be like the one standing before me. His skin was as hard as a rock. If my knife wouldn't cut through it I was totally screwed.
He glared at me again, I expected another round of arguments, but he sighed, relenting. "Fine. If we're doing this, we need to prepare."
"Obviously." I rolled my eyes.
"Go pack what you'll need, I'll be back soon after I hunt." He stepped away from the stairs.
"Alright."
"I'll be back in an hour. Be sure to carry something to make a fire with."
"Okay." I frowned as I started walking up the stairs. What is a fire gonna do to a vamp?
I started packing my gear, an incredulous smile spreading across my face at the ridiculousness of it all. "I can't believe I'm working with a vampire… to hunt a vampire…." As I finished, I heard the door open and close downstairs, when I reached the bottom of the stairs I saw Charlie shrugging out of his jacket and boots.
"Hey Bells." He hung up his jacket and put his boots underneath it.
"Hey Charlie. Any more news about that vampire?" I asked hesitantly. I didn't need to show more interest than I already had with the case.
He turned to me and let out a big sigh. "Nothin' you?"
"I got a lead…." I treaded carefully, gauging his reaction.
"What is it?" His eyes lit up, I guess it was the first real headway he had gotten in this case. I could tell it was really starting to bother him. We walked into the kitchen together.
"I found a hunter nearby." Hunter being an understatement…. I added to myself. It even sounded ridiculous when I said the words out loud. "We're gonna go out tonight." I couldn't stop the butterflies from erupting in my stomach. I chalked it up to being nervous about working with Edward now that everyone's cards were on the table.
"You need help? I'm supposed to go fishing with Waylon, but I can cancel." I saw his tacklebox sitting by the back door.
Waylon was one of Charlie's oldest friends in this town. He didn't know everything about Charlie, but he knew better than most. Charlie frequented the diner a lot after Renee left, and I left. It became his home away from home and Waylon became the brother that he never knew he needed.
I could see how much he was really looking forward to this trip, he would go if I asked him, but I couldn't risk putting him in danger. Edward brought out another complication, Charlie would want to know why he was there. It would just open unnecessary questions. "No, you should go have fun. I'll see you tomorrow."
"You're going out all night?" He turned back to me, eyes wide. Clearly, Charlie was out of practice with hunting vampires.
"I'm not sure how long I'll be." It would probably be late when I got back anyway, he didn't need to know how late.
"Alright, do you have your gear?" It was a nice change to have him trusting me with hunting, especially since it has been a sore subject lately. I smiled, glad to see he was treating me like an equal instead of a child.
"Yeah." I held up my bag. "He'll be here in an hour."
I helped him load up his fishing gear into the cruiser and watched as he pulled out the driveway waving goodbye. Once I got back inside I did one final check on my gear making sure I had packed the essentials. I held the lighter in my hand, testing the weight. This was another gift from Dean, well, it was more like I had swiped it from him on more than one occasion, so he just gave it to me. I traced the cross symbol on it lightly, smiling at the memories the lighter brought to me. I looked up when I heard a soft knock on the door. I opened it to find Edward standing behind it. I tried to hide my surprised look behind the door as I moved to let him in. Gone was the average boy-next-door look that I had always seen him in and replaced by a pair of disheveled hiking boots, a beat-up pair of jeans, and a thick wool sweater underneath a sturdy leather jacket. The view from behind wasn't that bad either. I tried to hold back a sigh, it wasn't fair that he had to look like a supermodel all the time.
"Are you ready to go?" He asked as he turned to face me.
I cleared my throat, throwing my duffle bag over my shoulder to hide my blush. "Yeah." I practically ran to the car.
It was nearly impossible to see where we were going at night, but tonight was worse because of the fog rolling in from a short rainstorm we had earlier in the day. We finally stopped at the end of a mile marker where the road disappeared and gave way to the forest beyond. We got out and surveyed the trees, I pulled out my flashlight and shined it into the darkness. "So how do you track them?" I turned back to look at him, his eyes scanning the forest. I didn't know much about vampires, certainly not any like him. But I was sure that his senses were heightened more than the average humans.
"Scent." He came to stand beside me. I watched as he inhaled deeply and let it out slowly.
I snorted and pressed my lips together to keep from laughing. "Like a blood hound?"
He didn't bother to hide his laughter, the rouge hunter replaced with his boyish charm for an instant. "Yes"
"Alrighty then, go sick 'em boy." I patted him on the back and he snorted out a short laugh in response. "Maybe I should call you Sparky?" I grinned.
"Don't push it." He grinned back playfully.
"Fine, fine." I smirked. As soon as we entered the trees everything became quiet, there were no sounds to indicate any wildlife. It was a stark contrast between the woods behind Charlie's which evidently their sole purpose in life is to keep me away at night. It was a little unsettling to not hear anything if I had to admit it only to myself.
I looked to the strange vampire beside me, he was totally different from the vampires I had encountered before. Some of them were civilized, like Lenore's coven, others only interacted with humans so they could get a new food supply, like the coven Alex was working with. I thought back to this afternoon when I tried to behead him. I know I had a knife and not a machete like Dean, but it still should have done damage. "So why did my knife have no effect on you?" I asked after a few minutes of silent contemplation.
"Our skin is like granite." He replied without looking at me. "Very few things can penetrate it, another vampire being one of the only methods that I am familiar with."
I frowned. His answer only brought on another round of questions in my mind. "You're not like any other vampire I've met…."
"You're not like any other human I've met." He countered easily with a small smile in my direction.
"What are we going to do if we find this thing? Offer it a side of deer meat?" I smiled wryly. "How do we kill it?"
"I'll kill it." He corrected me matter-of-factly.
I rolled my eyes. "How Neanderthal of you."
With which I got a lopsided grin in response. We continued talking, me mostly about his life and why he had stayed with his coven for so long without venturing away from them. After a few minutes he stopped dead in his tracks and his head whipped towards South.
"It's a fresh scent…." I could hear a low growl begin to build in his throat. "Maybe twenty minutes old. Let's go." He darted off at a nonhuman pace and I tried my best to keep up with him. He seemed to remember that I was only human and would allow me to catch up every once and a while. After about ten minutes of running he stopped and I jogged up to his side, bracing myself with my hands against my knees to catch my breath.
I looked up to see his horrified expression. "What? What is it?"
"It's made another kill…" He growled. "Let's hope were not too late."
"Damn it…." I started running full out then, I had to save one of them, at least one. The universe owed me at least one win.
Our steps eventually lead us down to a small marina, the boats were tied off and knocking against the docks quietly, the scene was peaceful. Under normal circumstances this would be a great place to just relax and unwind. But I gasped when I saw a trail of blood splattered on the ground. I followed it, maybe the human was still alive, if I could only get to them in time. The trail veered off to the right to one of the boats. I looked at the end of the boat, towards the name. It wouldn't have caught my attention if I hadn't recognized the name. It was Waylon's.
"It's the Salty Charlotte… Charlie?! No!" A wave of panic rushed through me as I remembered where he was going tonight. I threw caution to the wind as I rushed to the gangplank and onto the ship.
"Bella!" I heard Edward's voice on the edge of my consciousness. I had to find Charlie, he couldn't be… I had to know he was okay…. "They could still be here!"
"I don't care! Please answer me Charlie!" I searched the boat, following the blood trail across the boat until I came across a boot, I tried to breathe normally as I inspected the shoe, Charlie wore a size 11, these were size 12. I found his body about two feet from the boot, the clothes were hanging from it as if they were torn away from the body. The bare skin showing had several deep gashes in them, but no blood was leaking out of it. The worst of it all was his face, barely recognizable underneath the scratch marks lining his face but I still managed to figure it out. I picked up a white name tag and wiped the blood spattered over it, it read 'Waylon'. "Oh God…." I covered my mouth in horror.
"He's the only body on boat." I heard Edward's strained voice from behind me, I turned to see his face screwed up into a grimace at the smell. I nodded numbly, realizing later that he did it to confirm Charlie wasn't on the boat. But that did little to calm my fears, they could still have taken him hostage.
"Is he dead…?" Even though I knew the answer, I still had to check. I nodded grimly at his statement and looked to him. Hoping against hope that I was wrong. "And you're sure Charlie isn't here?"
"He isn't."
My relief was instantly replaced by a boiling anger. "So we missed it… again… for the third damn time…." I kicked an upturned bucket in frustration. I sighed, looking down at it and noticing a crumbled piece of white paper standing out against the darkness and gore surrounding it. Picking it up carefully I unraveled it. In a hastily written scrawl I read the words aloud as best I could. "'Even though I am enjoying this little cat and mouse game, all good things must come to an end. See you soon.'" I thought it was written in pen but when I shined the flashlight on it, the ink was still wet, my stomach turned at the realization of what it was. "Is that what I think it is?" I handed the note to Edward.
He nodded grimly, "It's his blood." He pulled out a lighter and set the note on fire, setting it in the bucket I had kicked over to let it continue to burn.
I hesitated before asking him my next question, fearing his answer. "This isn't some rouge vamp, is it?" That note was left for someone, maybe it was for me. But by his expression, maybe it wasn't. His shoulders slumped, weighed down by guilt maybe? I saw his head bob down. I glared at him, it was all a lie, he lured me out here so that his buddy could finish me off. "So, you do know who's doing this…?" My mind ran to try and find a way out of this. I knew my knife wouldn't work on him, but would it work on this other vampire? I didn't know for sure. "Is it your friend Garrett? Or is it one of your coven buddies?"
"I don't know." His voice sounded hollow as if he really hadn't been paying attention to what I had said.
I balled up my fist in anger. "You do know, you just won't tell me. I thought you trusted me now." I spat at him and got out of the boat to call 911.
"I'm telling the truth."
I ignored him as the dispatcher answered the phone. "911 What's your emergency?
"I have to report a dead body…." I told him everything that we had found all the while glaring at the vampire who had looked like he'd seen a ghost. I hung up soon after and walked back to where he was. "Can you track the scent from here?" He nodded mutely. "Then let's go."
I followed him, keeping my distance as best I could. What was he hiding? I knew he couldn't have killed Waylon because he had been with me the whole time. But if he wasn't the one killing these people, then who? And how did they know him? It really didn't matter in the end. Regardless if he had saved my life or not, although he claimed to only hunt animals, he was a vampire and I was a hunter. I knew I had to kill him, so why was I hesitating?
"I really think this is a bad idea." He called back to me.
"I don't really care what you think at this point." I scowled at his back.
He turned back to me and sighed. "You shouldn't be here."
"I said shut up." I pushed past him and broke into a sprint. I had no idea what in the hell I was doing but I needed to get away from him, away from this small damn town. My mind conjured up images from my nightmares in the white forest, was I running away from him or towards my brothers? I needed to be with them, I was in way over my head and it was all because I was trying to prove that I could handle hunts by myself. What was I thinking? I was being so stupid… tears began to run down my face pushing myself to go faster.
"Bella wait!" A pair of strong hands reached around me and pulled me back. I gasped in surprise as he cradled me against his chest. I looked down just long enough to see my flashlight disappear into the blackness of a ravine, the other side of it at least a yard away from where we were standing. "They jumped…." He stated quietly.
"T-thanks…." My heart was pounding from the adrenaline rush and being much closer to him than I would have liked. He released me and backed a few paces away from me.
"I know you're mad, but you have to trust me." He looked at me with such determination it nearly took my breath away.
I nodded numbly, the shock of everything that happened settling in. "Okay." Even though I wasn't 100% sure about his intentions, the list of how many times he had saved me was growing. Surely if he had evil intentions then he would have just let me fall right?
"Let's get you home okay?" He extended his hand with what I assumed was to be a comforting smile. "There's no easy path for a human to navigate over there."
"Alright." I took his hand, the coldness not bothering me as much as it used to.
"We should also check on your father. You can use my phone."
We made it back to his car about a half an hour later, avoiding the marina as much as we could, I could hardly make out the flashing lights in the distance. He gave me his cell phone when we got into the car. I mumbled out a thank you and dialed Charlie's number.
"Who is this?" I heard his gruff reply on the other end.
"It's me Charlie." I tried to keep my voice even and calm, I knew he was safe. "I'm on my way back."
My voice must have betrayed me. "Are you okay kid? How did the hunt go?"
"Charlie… something happened." I closed my eyes, grateful that I could break the news over the phone instead of in person.
"Are you okay?" His voice held a note of urgency and panic.
"I'm fine… Charlie. It's Waylon…." I bit my lip. "He's dead…."
"What?" His voice was hollow. "How did you find out?"
"We found him…. The vamp got him…. I'm so sorry Charlie. I'm just glad you weren't there."
"Thanks Bells."
"I'll be home in a little while okay?" I wrapped up the phone call shortly after and gave it back to Edward.
"Are you alright?" He asked tentatively after a few quiet moments.
"One of my dad's best friends is gone… how do you think I feel?" I tried not to let the anger and sadness leak into my words. I sighed as I turned to look out the window, watching the scenery flash by. I heard him mutter a quiet apology, but I ignored it. The ride back was quiet. I thanked him quietly and watched him speed off down the road. I hadn't even reached for the door before it swung open and Charlie pulled me into a tight hug.
"I was so worried about you." He released a long breath I'm sure he had been holding since I called him. "Was that Cullen?" He tried to confirm the vehicle, but it had already faded out of sight.
"I'm okay and no… it was someone else."
"Okay…." He sighed, whether in relief or shock I couldn't tell.
"I'm sorry Charlie…."
He nodded and pulled me inside. "Waylon was a good man."
"I was so worried when I saw his boat. I thought you were on it…." I winced at the thought.
"No…" He walked down to the kitchen and sat down, rubbing his face as he sighed. "He called me just before I left saying that there was something wrong with the engine. I can't believe he's gone."
I couldn't think of anything else to say, we both sat in shocked silence. I didn't feel like cooking, much less eating, anything so I just retreated up to my room.
Of three things I was absolutely sure of. One, Edward was a vampire. Two, he knows who this vampire is that is killing people but won't tell me anything about it. And three: I was falling for him whether I'd like to admit it or not.
