Prompt #27 – Humility

When Itachi came home from his mission, he knew that his brother would be the first to welcome him home. Like he had predicted, Sasuke quickly ran over to him and asked him all sorts of questions about his mission, whilst Itachi quickly greeted his parents and started to settle down.

"How was your day at the academy, Sasuke?" The younger boy pouted and started complaining about his day. The taller male could tell that his brother was trying really hard to impress their father and Itachi with how well he was doing.

"Naruto is an idiot. He can't do anything right and he's so loud. He should just quit being in the academy. He even challenges me, but I never give in because he's not worth it." Itachi lifted his brother and brought him outside so they could speak in a bit more privacy. He set down Sasuke and sat on the wooden boards that surrounded their house.

"Let me tell you a story, Sasuke. I used to be like you in the academy. I always thought that I was better than everyone and that no one could beat me or was worth my time."

"But you are the best, nii-san!" Sasuke exclaimed. Itachi smiled softly as he was always happy when he thought about how much his younger brother seemed to love him and looked up to him. It had always made the older boy strive to be better and work harder.

"That's not the point, Sasuke. One day, a girl came up to me and she told me that she was disgusted with the way I acted. She told me that I could be all high and mighty because of my family name, but it didn't mean that I would do any better than other people."

"I don't understand, nii-san." Sasuke pouted again and gave his older brother a look of confusion. Itachi let out a small chuckle and ruffled the younger's raven locks.

"What she was trying to say was that it doesn't matter where you come from, it matters what you make with your life. Naruto might not come from a clan like ours and he might not have a gekki-kenkai, but he has the spirit and determination. What's the point of being a shinobi if you don't have a reason?" Realisation started to show on Sasuke's face and Itachi waited for the younger boy to say something. He could see a bit of hesitation on the boy's face before a look of determination took over.

"Nii-san, what's your reason for being a shinobi?"

"To protect the people dear to me; people like you Sasuke." The older Uchiha saw Sasuke smile before he heard their mother call them back in for dinner. They started making their way back when Sasuke asked another question.

"Who was that girl in your story?"

"Her name is Hana. That day, she taught me a lesson I will never forget." The brunet had taught him one of the most important lessons of all: humility.
