The Life and Times of Kurt Hummel

Season 2, Episode 21: READ ALL ABOUT IT

21/22- After Nationals, Kurt begins separating himself from Blaine to get used to life without him in case he goes to NYADA, making both of the boys upset. Meanwhile, Adam pays a final visit to Sebastian and there is a shocking turn of events.

The New Directions all stared in awe at the cabinet in front of them containing a brand new Nationals trophy. They had won their first Nationals title with an incredible performance and their excitement had yet to die out. Kurt was overjoyed to have finally won Nationals, especially as it was his last chance, but he was saddened to have performed his last in a competition with Glee. It had helped him more than he could ever express.

All he had to focus on now was graduation, NYADA and Blaine. And that was to be the toughest part. Kurt couldn't yet face the idea of being so far away from Blaine on a permanent basis, at least for the next year, and he decided the only way to prepare himself was to try and distance himself from Blaine for the next few days.

Kurt didn't realise it would break his heart.

-THE LIFE AND TIMES OF KURT HUMMEL-

The last Monday of the school year arrived, and Adam was starting to clear out his locker as Kurt approached him.

"Ah, the end of year locker cleanout." Kurt commented. Adam nodded.

"Yeah, I was going to do it after school but there's something I need to do. It's time I sort it out once and for all." Adam said.

"Sort what out?" Kurt asked.

"Sebastian finally gave me Ben Cross' address. I need to see him. He moved here years ago and it's time..." Adam said.

"Good luck." Kurt said, patting Adam on the back and rushing off when he saw Blaine approach them.

"He seemed in a rush." Adam said, looking at Kurt as he walked quickly away.

"I don't know what I've done. He cancelled on me twice over the weekend and hasn't spoken to me all day." Blaine said, obviously upset.

"Well...there must be some explanation. He's probably upset about leaving all of this behind." Adam said.

"Maybe..." Blaine said with a pain in his heart. He smiled at Adam then walked off. Adam finished taking stuff out of his locker and into his bag and took a deep breath, bracing himself for what he had to do.

As the school bell rang at the end of the day, Kurt painfully ignored an offer of a date from a text from Blaine and saw Adam. He ran up to him.

"Good luck!" Kurt said.

"Thanks." Adam replied.

"I saw a girl in the year below checking out your locker today. She said it was hers next year...you're leaving, aren't you?" Kurt asked. Adam suddenly became even more serious and slightly sad.

"...Yeah. I haven't told Blaine yet, or anyone for that matter. I've ruined people's lives wherever I've gone, and maybe getting away again will finally give me a chance to make a life for myself that I can be proud of." Adam admitted.

"Well, I'll miss you, but I won't say goodbye just yet." Kurt said and hugged Adam.

"Make sure you tell Blaine in private though; it'll be hard for him next year if we're both not here." Kurt added.

"Speaking of which, he's upset that you've been ignoring him. Talk to him, okay?" Adam said and walked off, leaving Kurt feeling sad and guilty.

Adam approached the door of an average sized house and knocked on it nervously. Eventually it was opened by a young man. He had short brown hair and clear signs of burns down one side of his neck continuing downwards.

"Hello Ben." Adam said.

"Hello Adam." Ben replied.

"Sebastian did mention that I'd come around, didn't he?" Adam asked.

"Yeah, he doesn't stop mentioning you." Ben answered and invited Adam in. He took a seat in a large armchair and Adam sat next to him, carrying his schoolbag and placing it on the floor.

"Sebastian said you were scared to come. I had no idea that you lived around here." Ben said.

"I know...look Ben, I know you can never truly forgive me, and of course you can't. I don't want you to. But I want you to know that what I did that day has changed me forever and made me the man I am today. There isn't a day that goes by when I don't think of you and your family." Adam said, already having tears roll down his cheeks.

"My sister was sixteen. Sixteen." Ben said.

"I know, and I can never apologise enough. I am sorry, and I always will be." Adam said.

"...Why did you come here? I don't understand." Ben wondered.

"I'm moving back to England to start fresh, and since you were here I knew that I had to at least see you. How are you doing?" Adam asked.

"...Good, actually. I'm studying law and I just got engaged to a girl named Jessica. She's the most beautiful woman I've ever known, inside and out." Ben said.

"That's incredible. Congratulations." Adam said. Ben let out a smile for the first time.

"Thank you. She sings in the local restaurant on Saturdays. I've always loved music." Ben said.

"I know, and that's why I have this with me. I wanted to sing a song for you, just so you know I will always think of you and your family, and to show that I will always regret what I did. I am so sorry." Adam said sadly with tears in his eyes as he pulled out an iPod from his bag and played some music from it. He began to sing.

"Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I'll never be alone
And you my friend will see
You've got a friend in me
(You've got a friend in me)

Ben, you're always running here and there
(Here and there)
You feel you're not wanted anywhere
(Anywhere)
If you ever look behind
And don't like what you find
There's something you should know
You've got a place to go
(You've got a place to go)

I used to say "I" and "me"
Now it's "us", now it's "we"
I used to say "I" and "me"
Now it's "us", now it's "we"

Ben, most people would turn you away
I don't listen to a word they say
They don't see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I'm sure they'd think again
If they had a friend like Ben
(A friend)
Like Ben
(Like Ben)
Like Ben."

The song ended and Ben smiled at Adam with tears in his eyes.

"That was great. Really, it was." Ben said, and Adam smiled.

"I am sorry, Ben. For everything. I wish I could fix it." Adam said.

"I know. But you were young and manipulated and it can't be fixed, though I do appreciate you coming. Will you visit my family for me when you go home?" Ben asked, wiping away tears.

"Of course I will. I'll visit them every week. For both of us." Adam said and gathered his things together.

"Thank you for letting me talk to you." Adam added.

"Good luck going back home." Ben said.

"Have a fantastic wedding." Adam replied. Ben smiled.

"Thank you for coming." Ben said. Adam picked up his bag, wiped tears away, smiled and went to leave.

"Adam...there is a way to be good again." Ben said. Adam nodded and walked out into the open world and took in a breath of fresh air, feeling like a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.

Kurt was lying on his bed staring into space when his room door suddenly flew open.

"Hey! There's a thing called knocking, it's really-"

Kurt paused at the sight of a teary Blaine standing at the door. He sat next to Kurt.

"What's going on? What have I done wrong?" Blaine asked.

"Nothing. It's me." Kurt admitted.

"You've been blanking me for three days. I don't understand." Blaine said.

"I was trying to get used to not having you in my life in case I get to go to New York. And I'm sorry that I upset you because I hate upsetting you and that's upset me and I don't want to leave you..." Kurt began but couldn't finish as tears took over. Blaine wrapped his arms around Kurt, also teary.

"Hey, you are going to New York, and of course I'll miss you. At the end of the day Kurt Hummel, I love you more than anything, and that is all that matters. Right?" Blaine questioned. Kurt nodded.

"The thought of not being around you...it breaks my heart." Kurt admitted.

"Hey, I'll come up and see you and you'll come down and see me. We'll get through this. I promise." Blaine said.

"I love you." Kurt said.

"And I love you." Blaine replied. Kurt cried into Blaine's shoulders for hours. It would be hard, but Kurt knew deep down in his heart that Blaine Anderson was worth fighting for.

The next day, the school day went by quickly and Adam walked to Dalton Academy and saw Sebastian, following him to his room and surprising him.

"Hello." Adam said.

"Hey, Ben said you sang to him yesterday. Nice touch." Sebastian said.

"I just came to thank you for everything, despite the crap we've given each other the past year." Adam said. Sebastian turned to face him, his face suddenly serious.

"Why does this sound like a goodbye?" Sebastian asked.

"Because it is. I'm going back to England. A fresh start." Adam revealed. Sebastian appeared to look slightly disappointed.

"I thought we could've been good friends." Sebastian admitted.

"Maybe." Adam said.

"Well, if we won't be flirting much anymore you better give me a hug, Crawford." Sebastian said with a smile.

"Of course, Smythe." Adam said and hugged Sebastian tight.

"So you didn't deny we flirt then?" Sebastian asked flirtatiously.

"Of course we did." Adam replied.

The boys pulled apart slightly and stared into each other's eyes with a smile, their lips close to touching.

"I should go." Adam whispered, his eyes fixated on Sebastian's lips.

"...Don't." Sebastian whispered back. Adam pulled Sebastian close and the two boys' lips met intensely. They kept kissing as Sebastian pulled off Adam's jacket. They pulled apart for a brief moment and smiled. Adam pushed Sebastian onto the bed. Sebastian took of his blazer and tie and started unbuttoning his shirt. Adam closed the door.

In the auditorium after school, Kurt and Blaine were stood on the stage with the band around them.

"We might as well savour chances for duets while we still got to the same school." Kurt said and Blaine smiled. The music began and Kurt started to sing.

"You've got the words to change a nation
But you're biting your tongue
You've spent a life time stuck in silence
Afraid you'll say something wrong
If no one ever hears it how we gonna learn your song?

So come on, come on
Come on, come on."

Blaine then sang a section.

"You've got a heart as loud as lions
So why let your voice be tamed?
Maybe we're a little different
There's no need to be ashamed
You've got the light to fight the shadows
So stop hiding it away
Come on, come on."

The two boys then sang together.

"I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh."

Blaine sang alone again.

"At night we're waking up the neighbours
While we sing away the blues
Making sure that we're remembered, yeah
Cause we all matter too
If the truth has been forbidden
Then we're breaking all the rules

So come on, come on
Come on, come on."

Kurt then sang.

"Let's get the TV and the radio
To play our tune again
It's 'bout time we got some airplay of our version of events
There's no need to be afraid
I will sing with you my friend
Come on, come on."

The two boys sang in sync once more.

"I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh."

Kurt sang a line.

"Yeah, we're all wonderful, wonderful people."

Blaine sang a line.

"So when did we all get so fearful?"

Kurt sang another line.

"Now we're finally finding our voices."

Blaine sang another line.

"So take a chance, come help me sing this."

Kurt sang a section, staring at Blaine lovingly.

"Yeah, we're all wonderful, wonderful people
So when did we all get so fearful?"

Staring back, Blaine sang on his own.

"And now we're finally finding our voices
Just take a chance, come help me sing this."

The boys sang together for the rest of the song.

"I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh

I wanna sing, I wanna shout
I wanna scream 'til the words dry out
So put it in all of the papers,
I'm not afraid
They can read all about it
Read all about it, oh."

The song ended and the two boys kissed passionately.

"My life is an open book, and I can't wait to share it all with you in the future. I'm not worried anymore." Kurt said.

"This is where our story really begins. And everyone can read all about it." Blaine said. Kurt hugged Blaine tight.

"We're gonna be okay."

Adam sat on Sebastian's bed in just his boxers and was stopped by Sebastian's arms wrapping around him when he tried to stand up.

"Well, I never thought I'd do that with you." Sebastian said. Adam laughed.

"Neither did I. Can I get up now?" Adam said jokingly.

"Why? You got somewhere better to be, 'cause I wouldn't mind doing that again. That was incredible." Sebastian said.

"I need to help my parents pack up our house ready for the move." Adam said.

"That's not as fun as what I suggest we do instead. I wouldn't mind if you help me put my clothes back on; I'm still naked under these sheets." Sebastian flirted.

"Unsurprisingly, I'm well aware of that." Adam said and pulled free from Sebastian's grasp. He started to gather up his clothes and put his trousers back on, followed by his socks and finally his shirt.

"We should've had sex a lot sooner." Sebastian stated.

"Maybe we should have." Adam said as he finished sorting himself out. He lied on top of Sebastian and kissed him.

"Be good, you." Adam said.

"Only if you are." Sebastian replied.

"Always." Adam smiled and walked to the door.

"I hope it goes your way." Sebastian said.

"Have a good life." Adam said.

"Thank you, and if you ever come back...well, I better see your face." Sebastian said. Adam smiled and waved goodbye. Sebastian waved back as Adam walked out with a smile on his face.

Sebastian leant back and lied on his bed; he was happy about what had just happened yet couldn't help but feel sad.

Kurt was eating dinner with Burt, Finn and Carole that night, knowing he only had three days left of school at McKinley. Then, he was free to do what he wanted with the world and the future was expecting him to do something. His NYADA letter would be arriving any time and everything he knew was going to change.

All Kurt could do was hope it would be for the better.

NEXT TIME…

"I can't believe this is goodbye."

Kurt looked into the distance, and all he could see was the future.

"You'll be with me, wherever I go..."

He was always going to look back.
