I"M BACKKKK! Disclaimer: I only own Jay!
The cold didn't bother me at all. I rather liked the cold anyways. It felt good on my skin and refreshed me somewhat. It made me believe that I was still somewhat human from HYDRA's experiments.
Steve had become my rock. I let him in and it was maybe the best decision that I had ever made. I told him everything and he didn't mind at all. I thought that he even welcomed it. It was a new thing for me to be open to anyone in general, other than Nat. But I didn't even tell her personal details and I told Steve.
I still hadn't read the file and I was kind of afraid to. If I thought that what I would find was in there, I didn't even think that I could trust myself around them for a while. Maybe I would take a vacation. I hadn't use any of my days off anyways. Maybe I should fix that soon. It would be nice to get away from the team for a while and get some me time in.
I pulled the leather jacket over my shoulders and zipped it up. I was in the process of tying my mask on when the comms finally beeped at me. They were activated and I put one in my ear.
"Code Green Jay. We got a code Green."
"I'll get him out there."
I turned around in the chair and Bruce was sitting in a chair and twirling his fingers around each other. I went and sat beside him.
"They need you Bruce. It's a code Green."
"Why can't they use you?"
"They didn't ask for me. You'll be of more use than I will. I'm just an enhanced."
"Okay."
He stood up and I lowered the ramp for him to step out of. He did and then I closed it after he left. The quinjet was now far too empty for just one person. I sat in the pilot's seat again and sighed. I took off my mask and tossed it beside me.
I was being sidelined because of what HYDRA did to me. I didn't blame them but in these types of firefights I was useful. This is what I was trained for. I let myself believe that they were just concerned that I would accidentally use my power and hurt someone. I had been practicing when no one was around at the only damage that I did was I shattered a plate. Plates and bones weren't the same thing.
I missed being out in the field and being with the team. I missed being able to fight. But I knew that this was for the best. I was dangerous and needed to be in control first before I was allowed to be with other people. I didn't even know the full extent of my powers and it did fascinate me to find out what exactly I could so with this power. I could help take out bigger threats and get into the enemies mind and find out their plan and stop it before it even began.
But Tony and Bruce had been poking me with seemingly endless needles before everyone else intervened. I was a medical miracle, an enhanced, and should be studied. The rest of the team didn't think so. I wasn't fond of needles anyways but I wanted to find out what I could do. That would have to wait until later.
I listened into their conversations that were about the battle or Tony getting told by Cap for language. I thought that was amusing. I had a feeling that he wouldn't be hearing the end of that for a long time, not that I minded. But then he would be complaining to me about it. Oh well. The price of humor.
I spun around in the chair a few times then I heard JARVIS alert me to get a med kit ready. I raised the bed from the floor and hung an IV bag on the pole. I dropped the needle but concentrated on it and prevented it from shattering on the ground. It came into my open hand just as the ramp lowered and Nat was carrying an injured Clint in with Thor behind.
I helped her lay Clint down on the bed and she treated his wound on his side while I poked him with a needle in his arm and injected him with the IV. I hooked both pieces up and placed a new bandage on his wound to slow the bleeding down. It was slowing and he hadn't lost a lot of blood. He was lucky.
Nat took over and I sat in a chair by the ramp to await the others. Thor just stood near Clint like a guardian angel of sorts. Mjölnir was sitting a few chairs down from me and I was so bored just waiting for the other slowpokes to come back.
Once they did, Tony was holding Loki's scepter. My hand burned a little at the sight of that thing. He placed it in a container and I handed Bruce his headphones with opera on it. He sat in a corner and listened to his opera to calm himself. My rock came in and I closed the ramp behind him.
"Another firefight?"
"Just HYDRA. It wasn't anything that we couldn't handle."
"Yeah. I know."
I sat back in that seat and leaned back. His fingers fit around mine and I welcomed it.
"You know why we don't want you out there."
"I know but these missions are what I was trained for. I just feel like this chess piece rather than a team member."
His grip on my hand tightened a little then loosened. His fingers slipped from mine and I missed it.
"Jay, you're an enhanced. We just want you to be safe."
"Then why do I feel like you're only protecting them from me?"
I wished that I could clearly read his mind right now. Most times I just got random memories but could never find what I was searching for. I wasn't strong enough yet but I hoped that one day I could be.
"I'm not. If it were up to me, we could have used you but I'm not the only member on this team."
"Sushi tonight?"
That was the line that I used whenever I wanted him to drop it or change the subject. Right now it was both.
"Sure. I could use some sushi."
