According to Mari's watch, she and Mary had been hiding in her office for close to an hour. "Why doesn't Lucius answer back?" she whispered.
"He may not have any new information for us, Anna."
"I just hate hiding here under this desk while my people are out there in danger." Mari's blackberry vibrated in Mary's lap.
"It's Mr. Fox. It says, 'The Dark Knight on his way. Power to go out soon. Catwoman on prowl. Stay put and safe.' Huh, none of that makes sense to me. Do you understand any of it?"
"Some, the power will go out due to the SWAT team entering the floor. And it looks like Catwoman is the ring leader of this whole deal."
"Why is she here?"
"She hates me and Bruce. She wants the life I have been lucky to share with Bruce. I think this was all to come after me, I'm afraid. I hate that others are in danger here." Mari stopped as the lights went out. They heard yelling and screaming in the dark. Mary stayed next to Mari and held her hand as they could not see much. Suddenly, she heard the yells of the SWAT team coming on to the floor. They held their breath as the door to the office opened. Mari took a deep breath and motioned for Mary to stay put. She looked out and saw Batman checking that she was safe, they nodded at each other. Then he suddenly turned and ran down the hall where he came from.
Next thing they knew the lights were back on and a SWAT team officer was entering the room. He saw Mari and said, "Mrs. Wayne?"
"Yes." She answered.
He turned to his radio. "Rogers to control. Come in control."
She and Mary who had come out from under the desk heard the radio and answer back, "Control here, go ahead Rogers."
"Pass a message to the Commissioner. Mrs. Wayne has been found in her office with her assistant safe and sound. Once we clear the floor she'll be escorted down."
"Understood, Rogers. Control out."
He turned to Mari again. "Please remain here, Mrs. Wayne while we have the intruders taken to the lobby. We found them all unconscious including Catwoman once we have them out of here, we will start to move people out of here."
She stopped him, "Officer Rogers, was anyone hurt here in the building?"
"No, ma'am. There were no injuries on the floor but one Wayne Enterprises employee was murdered by this group in the parking garage but that was the only injury. Now if you will excuse me, ladies." He said as he walked away.
Bruce had returned to Applied Sciences where Lucius was waiting. He quickly changed back into his suit and they headed back to the lobby. Jim Gordon was waiting for them as they stepped off. "Bruce, we found her. Anna was in her office with her assistant Mary and they are fine. We will start moving the hostages down once we clear the intruders off the floor. It was surprising; once the team got there they were all unconscious."
"Thank you for letting me know, Jim. Was anyone hurt at all up there?'
"No, no one was hurt. They were co-operating with the intruders totally."
"I'll let you know as soon as they bring Anna down." Jim said as he walked away returning to guide the rest of the clean-up. Bruce looked over to the camera screens and breathed a sigh of relief seeing Mari up and packing her things in her office and comforting her employees as they returned to their offices.
About 30 minutes later, an officer came to Mari's office to escort her down to the lobby. She stopped and checked on people she hadn't seen as she left. Satisfied that they were ok, she got onto the elevator and breathed deeply as it took her to the lobby of Wayne Tower. The doors opened and the brightness of the lobby surprised her and caused her to cover her eyes for a moment. She looked around after her eyes adjusted and she saw him. They walked to each other and met part way in the center of the lobby.
Bruce pulled her into his arms and she finally felt safe as he held her. He looked at her to be sure she was safe. "Are you ok, Mari? They didn't find you before, did they?"
"No, Bruce. Mary and I were safe until he arrived. He left so quickly though I wondered why?"
"I think he was probably avoiding the SWAT team." He said as he held her close. Bruce saw Jim Gordon walk over. "Jim."
"Bruce, Anna, I am glad you both are safe. Anna, as Mary saw more than you did, and told you what she saw you can go. Bruce, I know you maybe anxious to get her home."
"I need to wait." Mari said.
"Mari, why?" Bruce asked her.
"I want to wait until everyone goes home. I don't want those who work with me to think I run at the first chance I get when there has been a problem. They are our employees, Bruce. Seeing us staying here, I think will make them feel supported."
"Okay, Mari. We can stay. But will you at least sit down and rest for me please?"
"I've been hiding under a desk for an hour, Bruce. I'm fine."
"Don't try to argue with a man who's trying to protect his wife and child, Anna. Haven't I told you that when you were pregnant with Ella?" Barbara Gordon said as she walked over to them laughing.
"Barbara, when did you get here?" Bruce asked.
"Once I heard that the people had been caught, I came to check on Jim. He lets himself get worn out before he'll stop to rest. Plus, it let me check on two of my friends." She said smiling at them
"We're okay, Barbara. I have just a slightly annoying overly protective husband." Mari said.
Barbara laughed but answered her, "I understand your frustrations but remember he loves you very much."
"I do. And I do feel fine. I just don't want to leave until my people do. I want them to see that I stayed until they can all go home." Mari said as Bruce walked over to Commissioner Gordon.
"Ok, that makes sense. Just give Bruce a minute to process that and I'm sure he'll understand too. He has spent the last hour worrying about you though so it's natural for him to want to immediately get you to a place that is perfectly safe." She said as she took Mari's hand and they both looked to Jim and Bruce over on the far side of the Tower's lobby.
It was almost 3 am before they could leave for Wayne Manor. Alfred was quite disturbed but was happy that everyone was safe. Mari had fallen asleep on the ride home so Bruce carried her to their room before he went down to the cave. He went on his patrol as normal and found Gordon on the roof of Police Headquarters. Batman landed on the roof and spoke first. "I heard you had some excitement this evening."
Jim turned around and looked at him, "I figured you had something to do with it. It was too unique to have the guards all taken out when my team went in."
"I was nearby and heard what was going on."
"Well, the people in the building owe you a bit of thanks."
"We've been over this before."
"I know. But I still wanted to say it." Gordon turned to see he had left.
Bruce returned to the cave and changed out of his suit. He was reviewing information he collected when he heard footsteps behind him. He turned and saw Mari walking barefoot through the water coming over to him. He gave her his hand to help her out of the water. "Mari, what are you doing up, sweetheart? You were sound asleep when I left."
"You forget. I can never sleep too long without you there. I woke up, changed and waited until I thought you would be back. I guess I just wanted to be near you tonight." She said as she shivered slightly.
"Here, I don't notice how chilly it can be down here." He said pulling her into his arms.
"Anything happen tonight?"
"Nothing major. I did see Jim Gordon at Police Headquarters though."
"Did Jim have anything interesting to say?" she said yawning as she rested her head against his chest.
"Not really, just tried to thank me for taking care of the situation at the Tower. But that is nothing new." He noticed her trying to hide another yawn. "Okay, you're tired and need to sleep. Let's go, Mari." He said picking her up and walking to the elevator. They walked together back up to their room. She curled up in their bed and he went to shower and change before coming to join her. He smiled as she turned over when he got in bed and curled next to him. They fell asleep together.
Across town, Catwoman managed to escape from her cell. She had managed to scratch into the walls of her cell the name Wayne.
