We're only young and naive still
We require certain skills
The mood it changes like the wind
Hard to control when it begins
The bittersweet between my teeth
Trying to find the in-betweens
Fall back in love eventually
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
-The Naked and Famous
Victoire shook Luke violently. "Oi, Bishop! Wake up!"
He slowly opened his eyes. "What?"
"Try outs begin in ten minutes," she reminded him.
"So? I don't even want to join the team! I'm only doing it because you're making me," he complained.
Victoire glared at him. "You have five minutes to get dressed and meet me on the field," she told him before stalking out of the room.
Groaning to himself, Luke rolled out of bed. He quickly changed, grabbed his broom, and traipsed down the stairs, checking his watch as he went. He was running down the stairs so quickly, he hardly noticed the girl at the bottom of the stairs. Before he could come to a complete halt, he slammed right into her. The two of them crashed onto the floor, Luke landing on top of her.
"Oi, watch it!" The girl snapped before noticing who it was. "Luke!" she gasped, her dark green eyes widening.
"Hey, Grace." Luke stood up, brushing himself off. "Sorry about that," he said, offering her a hand.
She took it and he pulled her up. "It's okay. I'm actually glad I ran into you. I've been meaning to talk to you…"
"Yeah, about what?" he asked, bending down to retrieve his broom.
"About Collin." She hung her head shamefully. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you about us…it just happened so fast and-"
Luke held his hand up, silencing up. "Grace, there's no need to apologize. I get it."
She looked surprised. "You do?"
"Yeah, you wanted a real relationship and I wasn't giving you that. I understand."
A slow smile spread across her face. "Yes! Exactly. I'm so glad you understand."
Luke stepped closer to her. "I can't say I don't miss our time together, though."
Grace's face turned a dark shade of red. "Well, that can't really happen anymore considering-"
"-considering you're back with Collin."
"Yes. Exactly."
"I just feel bad for you."
"Why?"
"You can't tell me Collin's really satisfying your needs. Reputation aside, Gracie, you're not as delicate as they say…"
"What happened between us…it was completely out of character for me. The only reason I continued it was because-"
"-you had fun," Luke finished for her.
"No! Well, yes! But it was stupid. And for your information, Collin is very much satisfying my needs."
"Is that so?"
"Yep."
"And you're not bored at all?" Luke asked, resting his hands around her waist.
Grace gazed at him, her mouth slightly open. "N-no," she managed to finally say, shaking her head.
Luke gently pulled her closer to him, his grip tightening slightly around her. "I think you're lying," he whispered in her ear. His lips slowly skidded from her cheek down to her neck.
Closing her eyes, Grace let out a low moan. "Luke…"
"Break up with him," he whispered quietly.
Grace's eyes snapped back open. "No," she told him firmly. "I can't. I love him."
"I don't believe that." Luke gazed at her, a cocky smile on his lips.
"Why not?" she demanded furiously.
Luke raised his eyebrows. His hands were still around her waist, their still bodies pressed together. "Because you still haven't pulled away," he told her smugly.
As if just realizing this, Grace jumped back. "Force of habit, that's all!"
"Whatever you say, Gracie."
"What are you even doing up this early, anyway?" she snapped.
"Quidditch try outs. You?"
Grace gave him a boastful smile. "I've got a study date with Collin," she told him with a slight sneer.
Luke laughed, throwing his broom over his shoulder. "No, you're right, Gracie. That's some real exciting stuff you two get up to."
He strode away, laughing to himself. Grace, seething, stomped up the stairs.
Teddy surveyed the field, his hands on his hips. Students were flooding the stands, clad in red and gold uniforms.
"Okay," he shouted, using his wand to amplify his voice. "Findley West and Lisa Fisher, please meet me by the locker rooms."
He watched as Finn stood up, racing down to the locker rooms, an excited grin on his face. The other students, who had stopped talking to listen to what Teddy had to say, returned to their conversations, some of them watching Finn and Lisa curiously.
"What's up, mate?" Finn asked as they neared each other.
"Teddy, is everything alright?" Lisa asked, her long hair bouncing around her as she jogged forward.
Teddy grimaced awkwardly. "Yeah, I just wanted to have a word with you two before tryouts started."
"Okay," Lisa said uncertainly.
"Well, it's just that…a lot of people showed up…and even though you're both great players and you were on the team last year…I can't guarantee you both a spot on the team. I mean, obviously, you're amazing players, but if there's someone better-"
Finn rolled his eyes. "We know, Teddy."
"You do?"
Lisa flicked him. "We've been through this process before, remember?"
"Well, I'm just making sure!"
She laughed, pulling her long hair into a tight ponytail. "Don't worry about me and West," she told him confidently. "We've got this."
"Okay, good," Teddy muttered, hoping desperately that there wasn't anybody better than Finn or Lisa. He needed them on the team again. They knew how things worked; he could rely on them.
"We should probably get started, though," Finn told him, checking his watch. "With all these people, it'll take hours."
"Good point," Teddy said as the three of them started back toward the field.
Grace marched down the hallway. She was so furious, so angry. Luke always seemed to get a reaction out of her.
She turned into the prefect's office, where Collin was waiting for her. He was sitting behind a desk, a pile of books on the table.
"Hey!" he exclaimed, upon seeing her. "What took you so long?"
"I ran into somebody," she muttered angrily, remembering the way Luke had wrapped his muscular arms around her waist and held her tightly. She hadn't even fought him off.
"This early?" Collin said in surprise as he stood up, walking around the desk.
Grace looked at him intently. "I love you, you know that?"
He gave her a small smile. "Well, I was hoping." He pulled her close, giving her a long but gentle kiss.
Grace grinned, a small laugh escaping her. She'd forgotten how sweet and tender Collin could be. She always felt safe with him. "No, I'm serious," she told him once he had pulled away. "I love you."
"I love you too," he mumbled, kissing the top of her head. "Now, let's get started," he said, letting go of her.
Grace shook her head, taking his hand.
"Where are we going?" he asked as she led him away from the pile of books and homework awaiting them.
She turned around, looking at him seriously. "Collin, I love you. You make me safe and I love that about you."
"Erm...thanks?"
"But I want more," she said more to herself than to him. "I want excitement."
"Excitement," he repeated, sounding confused.
Grace remembered the way Luke would kiss her: passionately as if they only had moments left together. With every touch, every kiss, he'd make her heart pound harder and harder. His touch was exhilarating and electrifying. He some how made every cell, every molecule in her body react.
Grace was determined to feel the same way about Collin.
"Gracie, I don't understand," Collin said, shaking his head.
Grace pushed him onto the couch roughly. Looking around to make sure the prefect's lounge was completely empty, she climbed on top of him.
"Grace-"
She leaned down, giving him a long kiss, her fingers quickly unbuttoning his shirt. Her lips moved away from his and down to his neck, then to his bare chest...
"Grace, are you sure about-" Collin stopped mid-sentence. His eyes widened as he watched Grace quickly remove her shirt and fling it across the room.
"Am I sure I want to do this? Absolutely." She smiled. "We've both done it already. It's not like it's a big deal anymore."
He frowned. "Well, yeah, but-"
"Why are you hesitating?" she demanded.
"Because I don't want you to regret it!"
Grace raised her eyebrows. "Collin, I love you and I'm ready to do this. Isn't that enough?"
Collin watched her carefully. "Okay," he said slowly, a small smile spreading across his face.
To begin tryouts, Teddy thought he would do flying tests first to weed out all the decent flyers. Much to his disappointment, Luke made the cut. He was probably the best one out there, almost as good as, if not better, than Finn himself. And that was saying something, because Finn was the best flyer on the team last year.
After he had dismissed an energetic group of second years, a giggling group of girls, and a few disappointed others, Teddy turned his attention to the few students left who had made the cut.
"Okay," he began, using his wand to amplify his voice so that everybody could hear. "Before we do anything else, I'd like to congratulate all of you who've made it this far. You've proved to be superb flyers, but now the real test begins. I'm going to be splitting you up into the positions you'll be trying out for. First up, the chasers. The rest of you can go sit in the stands to watch."
Teddy watched as the chasers stayed put, while everybody else trudged back to the stands nervously. A grinning Finn passed by, giving him an encouraging nod. Teddy gave him a curt nod back, trying to hide his nerves.
"I told you Luke was good," a soft voice whispered in his ear. Teddy glanced to his side to find a beaming Victoire.
"You were good too," he told her happily.
"Yeah, well, now we'll see if I'm good enough," she said, motioning to the other girls and boys trying out.
"You will be," he told her confidently. "I've seen you play loads of times."
"I've also beaten you loads of times," she reminded him.
"One time," he corrected.
Rolling her eyes, Victoire made her way back to the other chasers.
"You don't even like Quidditch," Collin complained.
"Shut it," Grace warned him. "Finn is trying out. I want to be here to support them."
Collin looked at her. "Wouldn't you rather go back to the prefect's office?" he wondered, a sly smile on his face.
She blushed. "That was fun," she admitted. "Look, there's Finn!" Grace exclaimed suddenly, jumping out of her seat. "GO FINN!" she cheered.
Finn, having heard his name, turned his head. When he saw Grace jumping up and down, calling his name, he grinned and waved.
"You're distracting him," Collin pointed out.
Grace ignored him and continued her cheering. She only stopped when she realized who was flying a few feet beside Finn.
Luke was hovering beside Finn, clutching his bat tightly. He had a determined look on his face as he surveyed the field, preparing himself for any rogue bludgers.
"Lucas Bishop and Findley West trying out for the same position?" Collin said in surprise. "Well, this can't end well."
Grace stared at Luke. She wasn't sure if he was purposely avoiding looking at her or if he was just concentrated on the game. Whatever the reason, an uncomfortable knot was forming in her stomach…was it guilt?
She had just slept with Collin a few minutes ago. And after she'd done it, she'd felt good. She felt like things were finally getting back to normal. But now, after seeing Luke, she felt like throwing up. Sex was something she'd only ever done with Luke before. It was something special and reserved for him only. Seeing Luke in front of her, it felt wrong to do something so intimate with somebody else. Even if that somebody else was her boyfriend.
"Grace, are you okay?"
Grace turned to find Skylar staring at her, her brows furrowed together in worry. "You look like you're going to be sick."
Collin, hearing this, turned to her in alarm. "It must be because you haven't eaten any breakfast. Hang on, I'll go get you something." He stood up and made his way through the crowded stands.
Skylar, who still looked a little concerned, took his place beside her. "Is everything okay?" she asked softly.
Grace forced a smile. "Yeah, I'm brilliant...must be hungry or something."
Skylar nodded, turning to watch the tryouts. "Victoire made the team, by the way," she commented. Her tone was a little too casual.
Grace nodded. "I figured. Vic's always been a brilliant flyer."
"You should congratulate her," Skylar suggested. "She's sitting a few rows below us watching Luke and Finn."
"Maybe."
Skylar glared at her. "It wouldn't kill you to say congratulations. It's one word."
Grace sighed. "Skylar, why must we go through this everyday?"
"Because it's been months, Grace, and you still haven't forgiven her! You need to let it go. Believe it or not, Vic still needs us."
"Does she?"
"Yes. You know Vic as well as I do. She'll pretend to be okay, but we both know that it's all just an act."
"That's not my problem anymore."
Skylar stood up and sighed. "I'll see you later, Gracie."
Grace watched as her best friend marched away with a disappointed look on her face. It was quite strange, Grace realized, that Skylar was the disappointed one for once. Usually, Grace was the one lecturing her.
"Riley Jones, congratulations. You're our new Seeker!"
A tall, skinny bloke with honey brown hair came forward with a relieved grin.
"Congratulations, mate," Teddy told him. "You were brilliant out there."
"Lisa Fisher, Mona Hill, and Victoire Weasley…you three are our new Chasers. Congratulations." Teddy watched Victoire high-five Luke. He couldn't help but smile himself at how happy she looked.
"And lastly, Lucas Bishop and Findley West are our two new beaters," he announced, grinning at a scowling Finn.
Teddy was quite pleased with his new team. Riley was an amazing Seeker. He was fast, focused, and he had great attitude. He followed directions well and seemed to be a pretty nice bloke. His Chasers were outstanding. He wasn't sure which one of the three girls was better than the other.
His Beaters, though…
Finn and Luke were definitely fantastic players. There was no doubt that they were the best of the day. However, he was slightly concerned at how well they would work together. That's why he asked the two of them to stay back after the others left.
"Listen," he told them seriously, "I picked the two of you because you were the best out of everybody else who tried out, but that doesn't mean your position is secure. You need to work together, yeah? I don't care if you hate one another. When you're on this field, you're teammates. That's how we do things here. That's how we've always done things here. If you don't like it, then there's plenty of other blokes who would kill for your spot. Got it?" Teddy surveyed them sternly.
Finn scowled. "Fine."
Luke glanced at Finn uneasily. "Fine," he agreed.
Teddy nodded curtly. "Good."
"OI, BISHOP!" Victoire was standing at the end of the field, waiting for Luke impatiently. "Let's go!"
Luke glanced back at Teddy and Finn. "See you at practice," he muttered awkwardly before rushing over to Victoire.
Once they were gone, Finn turned around and punched Teddy's arm.
"Oi!" Teddy rubbed his sore arm.
"I can't believe you let the Enemy Number One on the team!" Finn looked beside himself with rage. The two of them began making their way back up to the castle. Teddy was in high spirits, but Finn was still fuming.
"You can't deny he wasn't good." Teddy reasoned.
Finn scoffed. "I've seen better."
Teddy rolled his eyes. "You don't have to be friends with him. You just have to find a way to work together on the field."
"And what if I don't?"
"Then some other bloke will impress those scouts that Ginny is sending over. And then he will get an opportunity to play pro and you won't."
Finn groaned. "This is so unfair! Why is my life so horrible?"
Teddy raised his eyebrows. "Somewhere starving and underprivileged children are coming to kick your dramatic arse."
Finn ignored him. "It's my last year here, my last year on the team, my last year to impress those bloody scouts, and what does my best friend do? He lets the Enemy Number One on the freaking team!"
"It could be worse!" Teddy said brightly.
"How?"
"You could actually be a starving and underprivileged child."
"Sod off."
Teddy laughed, bumping his shoulder. "I know what will make you feel better." He nodded toward Sienna.
She was sitting at the footsteps of the grand staircase. She was twirling her long hair anxiously as her eyes narrowed at the thick book in front of her.
"Sienna?" Teddy said, trying to hide his shock in seeing her with a book.
She glanced up, surprised to see them. "I thought you two would be at some party by now celebrating the end of try outs."
"That's tonight." Finn winked. "Care to be my date?"
She smiled. "Maybe...if I could manage to understand what in the ruddy hell this book is talking about."
The two boys sat on either side of her. "What subject?" Teddy wondered.
She held up her book, sighing. "Transfiguration. It's so frustrating! I've been studying so hard, but I just can't seem to understand anything. And it's only the first week. How am I supposed to get through the entire year?"
Teddy took the thick textbook out of her hand. "You can start by relaxing. It's Saturday."
"Easy for you to say. School comes easy to you. It's not that easy for the rest of us. I work my arse off to barely pass."
Finn looked at her. "What does it matter if you suck at Transfiguration? You're hotter than half the girls in this school."
Sienna glared at him. "What does that have to do with anything?" she asked slowly, keeping her voice level. "My looks won't help me pass Transfiguration, will it." She paused, frowning. "Do you really think that little of me? Do you think I'm some dumb twit who only cares about her looks? Is that really all I'm good for in your eyes?" she asked angrily.
"Sienna, you know Finn didn't mean it like that," Teddy told her soothingly.
Finn rolled his eyes. "Yeah. Merlin, don't be so dramatic."
"Finn," Teddy growled, giving him a shut up now look.
Sienna stood up abruptly. "You can find another date for your party tonight," she told Finn furiously before chucking her thick book at him.
He dived out of the way just in time. "What was that all about?" Finn asked, outraged. "OI! Sienna, come back!" he shouted after her, but she just stomped away.
"You're an idiot." Teddy shook his head, making a note to talk to Sienna later.
"I was just trying to give her a ruddy compliment!" Finn defended himself.
Teddy rolled his eyes. "You know how insecure she is about school."
"She's overreacting!"
Teddy sighed. "Finn, you can't keep this up. One day, you're going to lose her. She's not going to wait for you forever, you know."
"I know."
"You can't act like you care about her and then be a complete arse the next minute."
"I wasn't being an arse! I was just trying to make her feel better." Finn turned his body so that he was staring after Sienna's retreating figure.
Teddy shook his head. "You were the one who told me not to hurt Vic and Skylar. Maybe you should try taking your own advice. Don't hurt Sienna."
"That's different," Finn said, sighing. "You always do the right thing, Teddy. I don't."
"Well, now's a good time to start."
"I don't want to...I like how things are with me and Sienna...we wouldn't work as a couple. She'd grow bored within weeks, and so would I." He sat back, resting his head against the wall. "Bugger," he muttered miserably.
