Chapter 21

Edward

I dragged myself from the mini grand piano I had moved to my new home and made myself get ready for another first day of school. I was dreading this day, but was also looking forward to it. I wanted to search out those new scents I had smelled along with Carlisle's and Esme's. But maybe the other vampires were too old to be in school. I didn't know.

I ran up to my room and yanked out random items from my closet. I threw on the long sleeved blue cotton dress I had randomly picked out and slipped on some tan Uggs. I brushed my hair back into a ponytail and grabbed my bag. Soon, I was starting up my car and driving to school.

It was only three miles to Forks High and I arrived in ten minutes. 'Great, I have extra time to spare,' I thought sarcastically. 'Like I need any of that.'

I parked in an empty spot, thankful that hardly any students had arrived yet. I wanted to be undiscovered. I fiddled with my CD player and turned on some Coldplay as I waited for a few minutes. I let their strange lyrics turn in my mind, making me think. I took calming breaths, unneeded, but calming nonetheless.

I prepared myself to be stared at and plundered out of my car. I made sure I locked it and walked to the front office. I nodded, trying to be pleasant to the few students that watched me. I was thankful for the privacy of the tinted windows in the front office.

I sauntered up to the front desk and waited for someone to help me. I could already see my schedule sticking out of some papers, but didn't make a move to get them. A lady with bright red hair came out to assist me and I only assumed her name was Mrs. Cope by the nameplate she sat down in front of.

"Hi, I'm Isabella Swan," I said, smiling at the bewildered woman. "I'm new," I added just in case. But I already figured she knew I was new.

She nodded, brushing a strand of dyed hair behind her ear, and began shuffling through the stack of papers. I tapped my foot, trying to get myself to stay calm as she passed over my name. I wanted so badly to point it out to her, but she soon found the paper.

"Ah, here you go dear. Do you need me to show you around the school?" she asked politely. I shook my head and thanked her.

I walked back outside in the November weather, not fazed by it at all, and studied my schedule. I was going to be bored easily with this one.

The parking lot had filled when I was inside. I was a crowd of boys huddled near my Mustang and I rolled my eyes. That was probably the only thing that boys liked better than girls. Cars.

I went through the day mostly annoyed. I got so much attention that I was contemplating moving again, but the same scents that I smelled yesterday kept popping up. I was too intrigued to go away so soon.

All the teachers I had seemed okay, but I knew I wasn't going to get along with the math teacher. Mr. Varner was very, well, let's just say he was in love with math. I could not get along with math freaks. It wasn't their faults; it was the word math. I shuddered.

When lunchtime came, I tried unsuccessfully to sneak my way in to the cafeteria. It didn't help that I was a few minutes late because the English teacher wanted to give me a textbook. He couldn't have hurried one bit through all the clutter on his desk. All eyes turned to me, except for one table. My mind immediately registered that they were vampires and the scents I had been searching for all day had belonged to them.

My eyes scanned that table, but before I could get far, a very brave human boy walked up to me. My mind told me that he was in my math class. 'His name is Mike,' my thoughts reminded me.

"Hey, uh, Isabella," Mike stuttered. "Want to join my table?"

I followed his finger as he pointed to a group of three guys and two girls. They all looked like the popular ones at this school, or at least wanna be popular.

"Thanks, but—" I was interrupted by a high trilling voice.

"She can sit with us."

I spun around. A girl, vampire, with spiky black hair smiled up at me. She was short, to say the least, but she was bouncing. I looked between Mike and the black haired vampire. He huffed and stalked off. The pixie girl grabbed my hand and towed me over to the table of what I assumed was her coven.

"I'm Alice," she said, looking up at me with light topaz eyes. It was startling to notice the same color eyes as mine, and I was soon glad that there were more vampires like Carlisle, Esme, and I. My heart clenched at their names.

"Bella," I said, noting that her smile widened considerably when she learned this fact. I was confused by her actions and wanted to ask her why.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed an auburn head snap up.

I could feel the piercing eyes of the student body on my back as Alice tugged me to her table. They all seemed surprised at her actions and I wondered if this coven kept to themselves as much as I did.

"This is my family," she gestured to the four vampires in front of me.

"Emmett," a burly, brown-haired man offered. A huge grin was plastered onto his face.

"Rosalie," a blond, beautiful woman who I figured was Emmett's mate. She was clinging to him, glaring at me with hateful eyes. I was startled at her protectiveness and stepped back. Alice firmly scooted me forward.

"Don't mind Rosalie," she comforted. I tried to force myself from my vampiric actions, wanting to lock myself in a crouch. I shook those thoughts away and stood straighter.

"Jasper. Nice to meet you Bella," the honey blond-haired man smiled. I felt wave of calm surround me and I smiled back at him. It was nice to know that at least one blond was nice.

There was one more person that I had to meet before I could settle back down.

"Bella," a voice murmured. I started at the hint of a voice I knew. One I knew so well that I immediately recognized it. My head snapped to the direction of the voice and my eyes widened.

That strange bronze colored hair I had wanted to touch so much was right in front of me. I trailed my eyes down the sculpted face I remembered in my mind and stared into topaz eyes. I was disappointed when I didn't see the green emeralds I loved so much, but I didn't linger on that too much. 'It's him! He's here!' I rejoiced.

I opened and closed my mouth a few times before I could speak.

"Edward."
